CatholicEdChat is a twitter chat. Topics focus on discussions around educational issues for Catholic Educators and topics beneficial to Catholic Schools. We look forward to continuing to connect Catholic Educators online to discuss education and teaching with faith in our schools. The chat takes place on Saturday mornings. Time 9am EST.
Look at you @debbiefuco I haven’t seen the paper version yet. I am thrilled to be a part of your PLN. Friends if you don’t follow Debbie, you should! #CatholicEdChat#MOedchat#5thChat
Good morning, #CatholicEdChat! I am a theology teacher in my twelfth year at my alma mater, Bishop McNamara High School (@BMHSMustangs), in Forestville, Maryland.
Good Morning #CatholicEdChat I’m an administrator from St. Louis and I have two questions for Ts specifically. First one... Do you have any ideas for “games” or bonding activities your principal has used at meetings throughout the year that you actually ENJOYED doing?
Good morning! After a rough February, things are looking up! It’s my first day of Spring Break and I’m taking my little red rental car to St. Louis! #CatholicEdChat
You know how much I enjoyed @breakoutEDU There are lots of options using the box or just digital to getting teachers engaged. Have you tried one with your faculty yet? #CatholicEdChat
Any bonding activity that involves food or giveaways is always a hit. Lunch and Learn where the lunch is provided. Afterschool share sessions with snacks-Challenges with small gift cards as prizes...#catholicedchat
Last year we lost our Easter Break and and moved to a Spring Break to follow many of our local Catholic HS to help our families. #CatholicEdChat Our last day is May 25th. Nebraska counts hours instead of days.
We began our year with an all staff service day (teachers, aides, staff, admin). It was nice to be out of school and putting into action what we tell our students all the time. #CatholicEdChat
I would like to hear about prayer journals? Paper?, notebook, spiral? Composition? Interactive? Wow, so many options what works best in your classroom? Do you read it? give a grade? Or just points for participation?
#CatholicEdChat
@Heart_of_Ed had a great energy building activity at our last meeting. We all broke into pairs and played rock paper scissor. Loser jumped onto the winner's team and went throughout the room playing other Ts. Eventually, we had 2 huge teams cheering for each other #catholicedchat
After attending an amazing session last year at #NCEA17 on PJs, I have designed an entire journal this year that Ss receive every Monday to complete by the end of the week. It’s got daily scripture, activities, etc. Will you be at #NCEA18? I’m presenting on it! #CatholicEdChat
I say no grade. When I was teaching I would read once every week or every other week randomly and used it as an opportunity to get to know the students and connect with them by writing some type of response. #CatholicEdChat

Everything has been designed through Google and I have set up a google classroom for students to access info to complete it. All our Ts have also been invited to participate with the Ss. #CatholicEdChat
As we’re finalizing our presentation and materials, I will totally send them to you and wouldn’t mind a call to walk you through it if you want! #CatholicEdChat
WE use ipads for our morning announcements with @TouchCastEdu app (Free and has green screen effects & more) & #padcaster equipment. We also use it in other classes to record projects student responses and even the youngest learners love using video! So much fun. #catholicedchat
Interesting, I was considering a digital option. I have been told next year I will have more access to devices. I like digital because it allow me to use all kinds of images and videos for reflection. It also gives them an option to grow with it year after year #CatholicEdChat
Our diocese is suggesting a mass for victims of gun violence in addition to the walk out which I think will be very meaningful for the kids. #catholicedchat
I’ve also been looking at how I might be able to do this, too. The one thing I’ve found is that students are less distracted and more intentional when they are coloring and writing in their notebooks vs on their devices. #CatholicEdChat
I had the same question from a 3rd grader. We had our Intruder Drill on Thursday. I got choked up going through this with my students when I told them I would do anything to protect them becasue I love them. #CatholicEdChat
It’s the same powerful conversation our high school students are asking me as well. I tell them I rather focus on us being loving and caring to one another in our community to prevent something like from happening #catholicedchat
we have so much focus on formation in an age of screens - "myth of multitasking" , "Taking back control through muting", "developing screen discipline"...even started parent training sessions for incoming families #catholicedchat
mine is called "Fake News, Faith, and Formation: Digital Citizenship in the Context of a Catholic School" -- looking forward to sharing #catholicedchat
We are doing a day of peace and will be hosting a prayer service with our Jr. High Ss to read the names of those who lost their lives and pray for the school community, families, policy makers, etc. It was our way to use our faith for positive social change! #CatholicEdChat
Heading out! Time to get ready to visit the parish youth group on their retreat this weekend! Keep them in your prayers! Have a great day! #CatholicEdChat
we have done active lockdown drills since Sandy Hook. Teachers had live fire active shooter training last year (that was disturbing). The Hide/Fight/Flee training has really taken hold with the teachers. #catholicedchat

I like paper for prayer journals but if you have access to one note notebook that could be good digital option. Or use thinglink or Google's version of thing link to get students about scripture with words and images or even video of themselves reflecting #CatholicEdChat
I haven't had time to look yet--busy week! It's actually for my sister in law. Thanks for asking. I will see what I can find this weekend. #catholicedchat
I agree our students across this nation our very self aware. We know we can do more to make an safe environment in our classroom and a gun is the last thing I need in my classroom. I want to be armed with the best resources to help our students be successful #CatholicEdChat
wish i was at our school. Our @BJPSLibrary has knocked it out of the park. The "that's what she said" quote display is particularly awesome #catholicedchat

We have such a crucial opportunity in our Catholic schools to address the broader issue of gun violence, particularly by preceding action with prayer (as Christ always did). It gets me when people say that "we need to do more than pray." Who ever said we did not? #CatholicEdChat
This sounds awesome! I love the idea of Campus Ministry for an elementary school. It provides so many opportunities for student voice and growth of leadership. I look forward to seeing this. #CatholicEdChat
I think the politicians who keep saying thoughts and prayers and refuse to take a s legislative actions. Any action that has happened so far has been from private companies. I find that appalling. #catholicedchat
It is also a life issue. As I have been discussing with my theology students, in these dark days, we need to foster a broader Culture of Life, in which all human life is respected across the entire spectrum. Then the idea of taking another's life is unimaginable. #CatholicEdChat
Our Ts take a participation grade that sees the Ss have worked in it, but don’t read word for word their personal reflection. It’s a challenge to feel balanced with this activity that is given a lot of attention to their formation. #CatholicEdChat
I think problem is perception that "thoughts & prayers" along w/ "too soon to discuss" have become debate/discussion cut-offs to reflection. We have been addressing as "Prayers, Thoughts, and Action" -- First God and comfort, then discussion, then do something #catholicedchat
Would you like to be my principal next year? Beautiful school and church, talented faculty, supportive parents, hard working curious students and Christ at the center! @SMMschoolOmahahttps://t.co/MmwKVJt7hn
We're also using statements from USCCB to support peacemaking. Also printing Catholic resistance to social Injustice as combination of contemplation and action as response to gun violence #CatholicEdChat

Excellent! Did you find any Tweet type statements we can all use on the 14th? Would love to have a TwitterStorm sharing this viewpoint. #CatholicEdChat
I agree! In our class we talk a lot about “the why.” It’s a great time to be proactive with our students. Asking the question are we as educators are we inviting to all our students? When we are in lunch and we see a student alone do we join them? #CatholicEdChat
I believe we are tying the legislative advocacy to the walkout, but I have not been involved. One of my daughter's friends is helping spearhead the initiative i believe, any details @SincerelyMC__ ? #catholicedchat
I hate to leave early on such a great discussion, but it’s time for the weekend coffee fix for the greater community! Can’t wait to connect at #NCEA18! ❤️ #CatholicEdChat
I have not perceived them to be cut-offs per se, at least from those offering them in good faith (perhaps a redundant phrase). What I have found is the unfortunate perspective when prayer is deemed anachronistic. Your prayers/thoughts/action approach is admirable! #CatholicEdChat
Best way a principal showed me appreciation was by letting me make my own curriculum choices. I used to teach pre-k. They did a letter of the week curric. I asked if I could shift to inquiry, she thought about it and said "yes, I hired you bc I trust you." 💜🙌 #catholicedchat
I hope you’ll join us, Barb! This is just the surface of creativity! Our Ss’ journals are even more! I am inspired daily with their work! #CatholicEdChat
Last week was fun (Stress Busters week) so we had tranquility tea in the faculty lounge with candles & instrumental music. We had a dress down day & received squeezy stress balls in our mailboxes. Yesterday was coloring sheets & crayons on tables in the lounge #catholicedchat
There is some pretty stark evidence on the "thought and prayers" statements by congressional officials and the lack of advocacy, policy proposals, committee hearings, etc. -- i think that is the origin of the perception. #catholicedchat
This looks so great! I did that miraculous medal activity, but of course I think my students paperwork has been recycled because we don’t have a “home” for it. I just need to decide, paper or digital….decisions, decisions. #CatholicEdChat
These are amazing. I love technology, but there is something special about things that you create with your hands. I bet students will keep these for years! #catholicedchat
Agreed. Hence, my carefully chosen words of "those offering them in good faith." I was referring to leaders beyond politicians (e.g., leaders of religious communities), since most veritable leaders do not come in the form of elected officials. #CatholicEdChat
Where are you getting the templates from for your students to work with? And do you specify a particular lay-out or do they have some freedom to create? #catholicedchat
Yes, very disturbing, We have done this same things. It is disturbing, but so were fire drills at one point in our past. Training and drills are so important to unfortunately “normalize” the task. #CatholicEdChat

Any suggestions for book for middle schooler? Family just experienced unexpected death in the family. Purpose is independent reading and writing because we're in Holocaust unit and parents and child don't feel ready to address death #CatholicEdChat
@SMIPS_CampMin: Where are you getting the templates from for your students to work with? And do you specify a particular lay-out or do they have some freedom to create? #catholicedchat
This is creative Barb! I pray you find a leader that is a perfect fit in your community! We are also looking for a new principal. Good luck! #CatholicEdChat
i figured we were pretty much on the same page. I think people of faith have to be the counter cultural example to those who use faith as an excuse to allow evil. but thats real close to a soapbox #catholicedchat
I am waiting to hear about a grant from Knights of Columbus to get items like these for our classrooms and students. This is a beautiful plaque! #CatholicEdChat
As we’re finalizing our presentation and materials, I will totally send them to you and wouldn’t mind a call to walk you through it if you want! #CatholicEdChat
Just a heads-up for you Boston peeps--I will be there in two weeks for the ASCD conference. Would love to connect if there is some time. #catholicedchat
Thank you, everyone here at #CatholicEdChat, for a wonderful chat, and to @BarbInNebraska for leading such a productive session. God bless you all, and your families and educational communities as well. Remain inspired this Lent as we strive to grow closer to the Lord!
