Good morning everyone. I'm Perry, a middle school principal in IL. It's been awhile since I've been able to #satchat. Have much to learn about today's topic.
A1: #satchat School culture is always meshed with the parent community. The PTA and board play a big role in the international school scene in being an active voice in the school's workings and vision.
A1: First is making sure that you are connected to social media-which is the easiest way for Ps to access information quickly about your school #satchat
A1: Routine outward communication – from the school and individual Ts - on a variety of platforms specific to the needs of each family, as well as a similar variety of inward platforms so parents can communicate their needs to the school/Ts. #Satchat
Thanks Renner.
But I don’t have #springboard app so that’s not causing my problem.
Unfortunately even if @Apple updated #iOS 11 Hindenburg to something functional I couldn’t b/c #iphone resets every 1:10 not giving it enough time to update.

A1: In my job as a HS AP Coordinator I struggle with the parent piece, however, they are so important to helping their Ss make important decisions! #satchat

A1: I've bragged before, but as a #boe member, I have to share our web page again (social media mashup just below the pictures) https://t.co/qXkRChETYS#satchat
A1: This year our district was lucky to find an amazing music teacher with a passion for videography. The videos he has created brings our culture alive on Twitter, B2S nights, etc. The kids love it too! #satchat
A1: A culture of community involvement needs to be established throughout the school by both Ts and Admin. Then use newsletters and tech to keep Ps in the loop and involved. #satchat
I think one way to start is to put the "home" back in "homework". Not that I actually am a fan of homework, but I think it is important that students work on the homework or assignments with the parents, where the parents also teach and help the student in learning. #satchat
A1 Our MS principal records a phone call every Sunday. Happens around dinner time and we put her on speaker while we all listen. She shares news and upcoming events, but she always makes it feel personal. She does it because she cares. Thanks @WestlandPrinc#satchat
Communication is key to connecting school culture with home. @ClassDojo and @Seesaw have been helpful in getting my parents connected to our class culture/blog #satchat
A1: Leverage the power of technology to bring a school's culture into the homes of students and parents. My children's teachers @MrsMacRitchie and @MrJones6A tweet from their classrooms. Great way to extend the dinner conversation #satchat
We have a parent visitation day, post pictures on Social Media, and have a weekly newsletter, but still would like a better relationship w/ our families. #satchat
A1 When a school can create a culture that make parents feel welcome in the building and a part of what's going on there, then we will see that school's culture make its way into the home. #satchat
A1: We have an all school Class Dojo expectation. Teachers post daily pictures with learning targets and short snips of what is happening in our school. It has been a great way to get parents involved! #satchat
A1 Invite parents to be a part of the educational process. Let them see and interact with material. Our Ts have seen a great return on Ps support when opening the class to then. #Satchat
Q1 giving me pause, #satchat. Sounds slightly more like hostile takeover or imperial push, rather than partnership. Connecting w/students & their families via open 2-way communication lines feels like key 1st step.
A1: Partnering with parents by consistently communicating with them based on what they need. E-News, School Instagram Account, Access to grade and LMS Portal. Now, we are starting a parent group @Cosgrove_LOTS#satchat
A1: First is making sure that you are connected to social media-which is the easiest way for Ps to access information quickly about your school #satchat
A1: We start with home visits/coffee house encounters. We want to make sure that the door to relationship building starts from the beginning of the year. #Satchat
We post our "Friday Folder" correspondence & our weekly announcement slides on our website, have news blasts from District Office, & parent email lists we use. Mix results at best. Some parents still want the flyers. Old school. #satchat
A1…and routinely invite parents/community members into the school to see the work your students are doing. Hint: A strong bridge is built if the PBL projects they do address the needs of the community! #satchat
A1: as an elective teacher, I started doing 10 second testimonials https://t.co/Nt7xltGwuO perfect activity before thanksgiving and winter breaks #satchat
A1: provide lenses into classrooms/school activities. Twitter, instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, whatever- make it accessible as easily as possible #satchat
A1: Share, share, share, share! Social media, newsletters, radio, television, newspapers, when you out walking your dog, and when you are buying groceries. We are always on the clock! #satchat
A1: In the district I teach in, I am working to replicate the use of social media to communicate. As a lit. coach, I get to be in so many classrooms. #satchat
We can spread school culture by meaningfully engaging families in all aspects of the schooling experience from the learning to the extracurricular activities; our families should be partners! Our schools should not be fortresses! #satchat
A simple video even just interviewing students can go a long way. Here our kids explain what they’re thankful for this holiday season: https://t.co/hHqdTvIMd8. All thanks to our Mr. Rigby! #satchat
I'd love to learn more about this. As a parent, we're struggling with a reward system that's leaves our student feeling left out. Would love to help her class find something more inclusive #satchat
A1 you have to be constantly sending out images and videos of the awesomeness of the students. Have experiences after school hours that involve parent and student learning #satchat
A1 Rather than only telling parents what’s happening at school, we can also explain how what’s happening moves students toward meaningful learning and invite parents to keep building that meaningful learning at home. #satchat
A1: Offer different parent nights where Ss can showcase learning, make them positive experiences, & also open up the library one night a week for parents and Ss to use. Tech night, training parents on what Ss are doing & how, etc. #satchat
A1) Start by making families always feel welcome in the school. Office staff glad to see them? Is there somewhere for them to hang out at any time? #satchat
A1: encourage teachers to find a platform that can be the window in for Ps. @Seesaw@Flipgrid#googleclassroom are all good options. But it has to work for the Ts. #satchat
A1: host activities to bring families in: movie nights, rev nights, reading groups. Schools (esp. urban schools) need to be community centers for Ss and their families #satchat
A1: Having an ongoing communication with parents, involving families and students in school activities can help build strong home-school partnerships. #satchat
A1. Schools and districts need to engage parents through various methods of communication:
newsletters
social media
events
PTAs/PTSA's
Clubs & Activities
There is no one perfect way. Multiple methods meet generational needs of parents #satchat
Students self report their actions including adult contact info and we verify. Points awarded based on time commitment and active or passive role in activity. #satchat
Culture is all about communication & relationships. Healthy relationships with our families are critical to the success of all students & schools! #satchat
A1 Start a community problem solvers club! We're tackling a local invasive species & tomorrow we're having a hike and panorama photo shoot at a local wildlife refuge. Can't wait! #satchat
special nights at school ... poor parent turnout on the middle school level not because of parent connection, but because the kids don't want to be there ... ask them #satchat

"You know Him who has been from the beginning...what we have heard and seen...we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ"- 1 John 1
#satchat#saturdaymorning#Christmas#atheist#lonely
This is important! Staff as a group needs to understand that showering Ss with care and showering parents with communication are closely related practices. #Satchat
A1 #satchat Many schools use social media as a way to connect. I also find @Seesaw@kidblog@Twitter and exploration of @TheGlobalGoals because it offers an opportunity to work towards solving a community need.
Sharing student work and pictures with a digital platform is nice, but it is most effective when Ss come home excited to take their families to these sites and share their work #satchat
special nights at school ... poor parent turnout on the middle school level not because of parent connection, but because the kids don't want to be there ... ask them #satchat
Connections have to be more than digital We have to be mindful that not all homes have the same resources. Do not alienate parents who do not have or choose not to use tech. #satchat
A1: Leverage the power of technology to bring a school's culture into the homes of students and parents. My children's teachers @MrsMacRitchie and @MrJones6A tweet from their classrooms. Great way to extend the dinner conversation #satchat
A1- You bring a school culture into students homes by bringing the homes into school as often as possible. Also bridge the gap with technology like @Flipgrid#Satchat
As a parent, I love seeing my daughter’s school experiences on Class Dojo. It isn’t daily at her school, but the periodic weekly posts are awesome nonetheless. #satchat
Good morning, Peggy from Illinois a1
Many times our schools go out to the homes to learn about families and to share our school culture through neighborhood walks pride patrols and welcome back events #satchat
I've tried to adopt this philosophy too. If I walk thru the lobby & am headed into the halls, I ask the parents if they want to go for a walk & check things out. I rarely get any takers but they know the doors are open. #satchat
A1. Making you classroom/school open. Posting pics of the amazing things students are doing using SM. We use Storify to create a weekly recap of all the things going on at @gmsfalcon. #satchat
Yes! We make sure ever student team has an outside mentor - local or global. Real adult conversations that build solid skills these Ss will use for a lifetime. #satchat
Sorry I can’t join you all, this morning, for #satchat ! Missing you on this first Saturday in December! Thanks for your stories as hope as you share connections with parents and families this morning! Peace!
A2: Our schools sends out newsletters every week, and posts pictures of learning daily. But I want Ps to experience what is happening...always looking for ideas. #satchat
A1: as an elective teacher, I started doing 10 second testimonials https://t.co/Nt7xltGwuO perfect activity before thanksgiving and winter breaks #satchat
we can blame the culture at home, but if the kid isn't going home and bragging about school accomplishments or heck ... expressing at school how much they love being there everything is moot #satchat
As a parent I've found weekly recaps really valuable (the one year we got them), regardless of platform. Love the idea of Storify for the visuals! #satchat
A1. Making you classroom/school open. Posting pics of the amazing things students are doing using SM. We use Storify to create a weekly recap of all the things going on at @gmsfalcon. #satchat
As a building principal I used everything from Email to a video newsletter to social media to engage our families. There were multiple entry points for engagement because each family is different. #satchat
A2: #satchat Too many ways. 😊 Via the SIS, regular emails, sms when critical and general coffee meets that happen division wide. Streamlining the communication is something we are working on
A2: We have two different platforms (Instagram and Twitter) with different sets of moderators- one that showcases academics and another that showcases activities and athletics #satchat
A1 #satchat Parent volunteers are the best. They help weekly and with projects, trips. I have 4-5 Celebrations of Learning yearly. Nice way for parents to meet and have conversations about school and learning,
A1 Invitational Education teaches us to ensure everything about the school, from the building to the people, policies, and programs are “intentionally inviting.” #satchat
A2 Quite interesting times - Govt has a #dataprotection law where we had 2 do some modifications of how we are sharing data w #parents & external partners #satchat
A2 Several technological programs help. @Seesaw@GoogleForEdu google classroom @Flipgrid All these allow parents to access and see their kids in action! #Satchat
That's where we find ourself. Ps can be very passionate about how they receive their info too. You have to give them what THEY want. It's us trying to reach them. #satchat
A2: In a recent poll we conducted on parent communication, the vast majority of parents wanted information from school via email. Instead of inventing new ways 2 communicate, why not just ask parents what they prefer? #satchat#data
A2: Our school has a website, facebook page, twitter, instagram along with class dojo. We also have a livestream YouTube channel where the student techteam run a live morning announcements daily. #satchat
A2 We have active Twitter accounts in most schools and at district level. A district Facebook page, revamped website with Twitter feed on side and we have created 2 videos for parents in the district. #satchat
A1. We use a variety of social media/text and even a weekly podcast for outgoing info. We have parent forums and did an online book study with our P’s on A Parent’s Guide to the MS Years. Kids can be great liaisons to bridging the gap too. #satchat
Kids are honest with me ...they tell me how "dumb" these events are ... we are trying to make it worth their while, but it is a slow process to win them over. #satchat
Yeah, not sure why families are segmented into those limited circumstances for involvement. Are schools truly sending the message that families are welcome every day? #satchat
Q2: trying to grow here. So many options, but staff and admin aren’t aware of all options and overwhelmed by the need to do something else. Would love to start school instagram and Snapchat but lots of hesitation on Ts end w/social media #satchat
A2: As dist comms dir, I use Facebook (mainly parents), Twitter (mainly sports followers), and Instagram (Ps & Ss) to get out ALL the info about EVERYTHING going on. My radio class also does short spots for menus, announcements, etc. for the parents on sm. #satchat
A2 #satchat at the school I am doing my field experience at, each student has an iPad. They utilize Moodle & Google classroom, applications like this. The parents also have a login to check up on their kids and how well they are doing. So in this school, everything is electronic.
A2: In a recent poll we conducted on parent communication, the vast majority of parents wanted information from school via email. Instead of inventing new ways 2 communicate, why not just ask parents what they prefer? #satchat#data
Q2: we have a school hashtag that teachers/coaches/supervisors/etc are encouraged to use (#GBSNOW). School website reposts content on front page: https://t.co/Uf8WQVA5JI#satchat
A2: Parents are enjoying the access to the @Schoology portal to see assignments and discussions that are taking place in all classes. Grades are accessed through @InfiniteCampus. Website is updated every other week with an e-news. #Satchat
A2: One of our media specialist creates a weekly newsletter that gets digitally sent to parents and guardians each week. We also have a school Facebook page that posts happenings at the school and club and event reminders. #satchat
A2 We are embracing social media as a way to communicate with each other as well as the larger community. It connects us with people we normally don't have the ability to make contact with! #satchat
A2: Like you said, the more modes of communication the better! From Connect-Ed texts, calls, and emails to Twitter, Websites, etc. our communication is everywhere. The key is to make what’s communicated valuable! #satchat
I think it has to start w/ our Ss seeing the value in having their parents there. We are shifting our school to have our 8th graders lead many events during school, but haven't pivoted to after school just yet. #satchat
A2: We use Twitter, and include our Twitter feed on our website's homepage so it is accessible to ALL families; Use tech to translate info for families who do not speak English at home!!! And ask that your school's PTA promotes events on their social media platforms #satchat
A2: blackboard connect messages, email, District website, Twitter, FB for building wide or District wide events/happenings. Then each T has their own method #satchat
Yes to a district wide hashtag! And creating a school hashtag! We have pathways at our HS so each pathway has a hashtag too which makes it feel like a much smaller school and more focused. #satchat
A2: My school has several parent nights about various topics of community interest. The school has a site, twitter page, and Instagram. Most Ps don’t care about the last two. #satchat
#satchat That approach has its cons. As a parent of kids in middle and high or across school they find it hard to figure out where to go to get latest updates. So instead of a push we are working on a pull. Like a parent portal unified with everything they need 24/7.
A2: As dist comms dir, I use Facebook (mainly parents), Twitter (mainly sports followers), and Instagram (Ps & Ss) to get out ALL the info about EVERYTHING going on. My radio class also does short spots for menus, announcements, etc. for the parents on sm. #satchat
A2) My kids' schools: Elementary, single daily tweet from principal. Weekly newsletter emailed. Middle school, monthly newsletter emailed, that's it. No school-wide social media. Boooo. #satchat
A2: We use every electronic means possible, sharing the same messages on multiple platforms to try to reach as many people as we can and encourage them to engage with us. #satchat
A2 our district has a # For Teachers To Share Great Work With Their FamiliesAny Of Our Schools Use Twitter Or Class Dojo Or Remind And Other Social Media To Interact With Their Families #satchat
A1. We try to create community-based events that are open and free to our community. Once they cross the threshold of school they seem to have positive experiences. We offer free transportation so travel cannot be an excuse for not being able to come #satchat
Video newsletter...haven't done that but it has jarred my memory that I've sent a few screencasts to Ps this year to discuss things like construction/safety issues. Thanks Tony. Not feeling so lame now. Great ideas this morning. #satchat
A2: We also make sure to tweet lots of academic celebrations! Celebrating kids on task and owning their learning fosters a strong culture for academic growth! #satchat
6th graders in Mr. Santomenna’s class @WallinatWIS draft and discuss their annotations related to issues of social justice. Love how hard these readers and writers work! #wallin#literacystrong
A1: host activities to bring families in: movie nights, rev nights, reading groups. Schools (esp. urban schools) need to be community centers for Ss and their families #satchat
Q2 Social meeting is a powerful strategy to engage families. Make newsletters, Monday Morning Announcements available on a school FB page. Use instagram to post pictures of school events. Engage parents in chats. #satchat@UD_DASL
A2 My district uses as combination. Some Ts use @RemindHQ Some use email, some post announcements and homework in our LMS. Parent perspective, I need it all in one place or something gets lost. #satchat
A1: Found one of my Ss’ parents is getting a divorce. Immediately emailed the mom and told her that I would do all I could to help the kids. She sent me an email two hours later thanking me. #satchat
A2: At the MS level Ss are developing an independence that is important to their social/emotional growth. At the same time we are trying to have Ps more involved. Difficult balance. #Satchat
Q2: trying to grow here. So many options, but staff and admin aren’t aware of all options and overwhelmed by the need to do something else. Would love to start school instagram and Snapchat but lots of hesitation on Ts end w/social media #satchat
We just tried something similar @gmsfalcon, but got similar results as far as attendance. Could you go into a little detail about format of conferences? #satchat cc: @MrMuziq23@amburkoed

A2 Concerted effort from K-12 school where I teach is a weekly digest emailed & posted on website that spotlights key school-wide & level-specific doings/events. #satchat
A2 The school where I teach – and each of my kids’ schools – has emailed newsletters, websites, FB, Twitter & Instagram. The information is nice, but it feels like PR, not an invitation to collaborate meaningfully. #satchat
A2 We use electronic Newsletters, a Twitter hashtag, Dojo, Facebook, and lately some teachers have been sending QR codes linking to student work #satchat
Q2: trying to grow here. So many options, but staff and admin aren’t aware of all options and overwhelmed by the need to do something else. Would love to start school instagram and Snapchat but lots of hesitation on Ts end w/social media #satchat
How can Trump claim that his #TaxScamBill will "cut taxes for everyone" yet at the same time say that it will "cost me money"? Dear Mr. Trump, most Americans are not as ignorant as you are. #satchat
In this digital age, many administrators realize they are also in the role of “PR.” If we don’t share the great work of our teachers and students, no one will know! If nothing is shared, one assumes nothing worth sharing is happening. #Satchat
Yes! We also have Ss present to a group of parents (not just their own) and it's been a game changer. Many alums point to this as the key to developing public speaking skills. #satchat
In reply to
@karenvaites, @JohnFritzky, @BrianHerb17, @pammoran
A3: If we want to really engage the community, we have to go to them. When local stakeholder groups meet, we have to be there, from chambers to churches. #satchat#community#engagement
Our school has a pretty good Facebook page ... I need to do better at sharing our school news to that page so more parents can see it ... I share on SM, but mainly kids and other Eds see that. #satchat
Through my parent leadership training, I've proposed to start my own platform for the schools or districts from the parents' perspective. But I would prefer the schools take their own lead, of course. I welcome advice. #satchat
A1 Info+Fun! We have the opportunity to invite our families in each month for evening events to showcase their child's progress. Adding short videos on "tips" shared during parent nights to our website. Weekly phone messages, Twitter, Website.#satchat
A3: #satchat Depends on where their voice is essential. Committees are created to represent different parts of the community for decisions impacting whole community. Else division specific groups work together. Consistent communication a given.
#satchat A2. Ask the parents/guardians/grandparents for feedback..what best suits their needs..We have electronic surveying during PT Conferences thru year..twitter, fb, instagram
Some ask “If they didn’t learn it, did I really teach it?” Maybe we should ask “If I communicated with families and they didn’t ‘get’ it, did I really communicate?” #satchat
Q2: trying to grow here. So many options, but staff and admin aren’t aware of all options and overwhelmed by the need to do something else. Would love to start school instagram and Snapchat but lots of hesitation on Ts end w/social media #satchat
A3: Simple: We ask them! We just sent out a survey via the Chamber of Commerce to ask how we were doing and then we meet with community members next week to discuss the results. (into text below) #satchat
I not-so-secretly loathe robocalls; I think they should be reserved for emergency events, like school closures. People can read a message just about anywhere; not so true about listening to one. #satchat
Q2: trying to grow here. So many options, but staff and admin aren’t aware of all options and overwhelmed by the need to do something else. Would love to start school instagram and Snapchat but lots of hesitation on Ts end w/social media #satchat
#satchat Love waking up on Saturday mornings and chatting with whats-her-name that I ended up bringing home from the bar. Take a few minutes to get to know her a little, maybe even learn her name before the uber gets here, least I can do after using her like a farm animal....
A3: I really like this Q bc so much of the comm we do is 1 directional. We recently did a community-wide survey to get a pulse on the thoughts of all stakeholders #satchat
A3: you can invite them in to schools, some will show. I've found more success going to their meetings/events and telling your school's story there. #satchat
A3 We are REALLY good at this!! Our board, PTA are always invited to committees, tasks force, trials and initiatives #inclusion happens all the way & our superintendent Mr. Jacobson is a real advocate of this #satchat#FDRrocks
A3 Principals coffee, parent involvement and volunteering for events, PTA, and partnering with parents on discipline issues to best support students growth and learning right/wrong #Satchat
Our Principal has the ability to RoboCall call parents who have enrolled, but then everything is determined by parent "Opt In" if parents want to be in then we connect if not then they are on the outside #satchat
To allow for more meaningful conversation/dialogue about what resonates in the community around key topics that we are likely to be working on: homework, grading, mental health, etc. #satchat
A3. Using GoogleForms or some other platform to do surveys from time to time when there are things happening. Modern tech allows us to get feedback from stakeholders more often and efficiently. #satchat
Our MS does parent interviews at the end of the year for 8th graders. All students meet with a parent who is not their own and share work and reflect. I volunteered to be an interviewer and met with 5-6 students. So rewarding and meaningful! #satchat
In reply to
@engineerteacher, @karenvaites, @JohnFritzky, @pammoran
A3. Invite community in - show them what you’re doing. Be deliberate in making sure they know their a vital part of the school community - highlighting them in newsletters #satchat
We actually eliminated this last year thinking our PBL exhibition nights would be sufficient, but parents, students, and alums demanded we bring it back! DM me & I'll send details. #satchat
In reply to
@JohnFritzky, @karenvaites, @BrianHerb17, @pammoran
A3: At Parent-Advisory monthly meetings, all are invited to share their thoughts. Often times, the initial stage of projects and plans are shared so stakeholders can help how they take shape. When inputs affect the implementation, there’s more buy in #Satchat
A3b we also have questionnaires to provide specific feedback by grade level/teacher as well as whole school. Working on strategic planning now and parents are involved #satchat
A3: so important to share ways parents can support their child’s learning. Post I wrote on 10 Ways Parents Can Support Reading. https://t.co/fslrDNzeuy#satchat
A3: We have discussed the use of Though Exchange, but at the moment, I listen when parents or the community provide feedback and work with fellow admin/Ts to address concerns. It is more reactive than proactive, and I would love to reverse that. #Satchat.
A3 Confession: I'm better at inviting than outreach, which means the voices I hear often tend to be same 1s -- 1s that skew towards active involvement or who may have ax to grind. #satchat
A3: Reach out to community partners to discuss ways they can contribute to your school - then get Ps to the school to see how the community supports their Ss education - IT TAKES A VILLAGE, WE ARE ALL INVESTED IN STUDENT SUCCESS #satchat
#satchat A3. I think we go to the Community and reach out..Presence and also invite community into our school. One of my favorite days is our Career Day
A3: We do a survey at the end of the first quarter and then a followup one after third quarter to see how we're doing. We are transparent as possible in between, get out info, & attend meetings in community. #satchat
A3 our annual budget survey of everyone in Community has been open a while - we push out in a variety of ways to all stakeholders including students - this webpage included https://t.co/14fdSnLAVy#satchat
A3: I advocate like crazy to get student voice on committees. And I always support them in organizing meetings with school admin. Likewise, as a sped teacher, i am he parents liaison and advocate to make sure target get heard #satchat
A3 To find out how to engage community stakeholders, let’s ask them. What can we learn from each other? How can we work together to improve student life & learning? And let’s stop calling them stakeholders. Who are you close to that you call a stakeholder? #satchat
A2. Facebook, website, Remind 101, Podcasts that my parents seem to love, Skyward messenger... but I want to know how to get folks Twitter (or other related) informed and start interacting 2-way. #satchat
A3 Hold events that are designed for bringing community stakeholders in the door. Share info with them and then give them the chance to share their voices. Help them feel welcome! #satchat
I grew up in a trilingual environment, so for me learning languages is a no brainer for being a global citizen. When I speak to community stakeholders in their mother tongue language, the connection is instant. They really appreciate it. #satchat#buildingrelationships
This is so great! I teach High School Spanish and kids and even sometimes parents don't realize the value of knowing another language. (This is not really a problem in my new District. Everyone here values and understands the importance of knowing a foreign language).
I’ve been trying to get Ts to #satchat for years - crickets... I have finally convinced one to attend @NBEdCamp and that led to one new Twitter account. Ugh baby steps I guess...
A3: old school face-to-face chats with former Ss and families who are still in the community. I find that to be more effective than almost anything else. But I’m open to suggestions #satchat
#SatChat#SaturdayMorning#SaturdayMotivation People of God! As gross darkness covers the world and wickedness increases, let us turn up our lamps and let our lights shine brighter for the One Who saved us! Spread His Love! Amen! #JESUS
A3: this question just made me realize (as a parent) I have no idea what’s going on in my sons school! Gotta get on that and not be a parent I complain about never showing up #satchat
It’s a missed opportunity for connection if you have a diverse language community & you don’t make an effort to connect with your ELL community stakeholders. #satchat
Have them post a visual of what they are doing without Ss in the pix. Or a pix of their whiteboard/presentation screen/bulletin board, etc. Any glimpse into the classroom is a powerful and meaningful one! #satchat
A3 Biggest problem that I have experienced is when you take the time to get the stakeholders' opinions and then you still proceed 100% with your own agenda. #satchat
A3: We use surveys, invitations, and open events, but there is so much transiency in our community that many don't know if they can trust us to follow through or implement suggestions or not. We keep on trying, though! #satchat
I'd be happy to share Dennis, feel free to adapt anything to your school. Each grade has modified the templates we created. https://t.co/NGOIoHGeNJ
If you want to talk more let me know I'd be happy to.
#satchat
A3: Parent University Programs, Principal Coffee Hours, HSA Board Committee meetings with Superintendent. Parents also serve on our Green Teams and other service committees. Great way to get community input! #satchat
Wise reminder. While electronic communication has efficiency in its corner, that doesn't make it the right tool for every situation. Beware when every problem starts looking like a nail to someone w/a hammer. #satchat
A4: My favorite is twitter because it is always available to me and Ps can read on their terms. I can easily attach photos/videos and give Ps a lens in to the school. #SatChat
A3. We have formed partnerships with local organizations. Our Rotary will host some of its monthly meetings at our school and our kids participate. Our VFW and Legion sponsor our jr flag corps. We partner with larger sectors or health related services. Sometimes just ask #satchat
#satchat A4: My favorite is Remind, and was Google Classroom. Ps could see all of their kids' assignments, and there were no questions about which ones were missing. :-)
A4 #satchat I love my class blog, @padlet and @Twitter . Both are updated daily and parents know they can always check. They both offer opportunities for parents to have conversations with their child about their day.
A3 We can also invite community members to share their knowledge. After our ms read the YA Omnivore’s Dilemma, we hosted an Omnivores’ Forum - 24 local food experts to give workshops to our kids. #satchat
We had an amazing discussion about learning w/over 30 parents, comm. members, teachers, admin & STUDENTS in the room- will continue series https://t.co/XyHAaqUPGw#satchat
A4: Setting up specialized groups in a digital messenger system is critical for communicating to the right people rather than flooding inboxes w/ information that people don't need #satchat@schoolmessenger
special nights at school ... poor parent turnout on the middle school level not because of parent connection, but because the kids don't want to be there ... ask them #satchat
These are literally 3 of the 429 pages that the U.S. Senators were given 2 hours prior to their vote on the Trump #TaxScamBill - illegible, and completely incoherent! SCAM is an understatement. It might as well have been written in Chinese! #satchat
A3: partner with local paper or businesses and get kids writing and sharing the school’s happenings. Great way to build those connections and writing with purpose. #satchat
Indeed! Just like I can't assume every student understands something just because "I covered it," I can't assume my communication is clear just because "I sent out that email." Find a way. #satchat
A4 Google classroom, @remind101, Twitter of course. All allow for different avenues to connect parents to school. This year we love the return on @Flipgrid and @Seesaw and how kids and families can see what we are doing in school #Satchat
Q4: Ps really seem to respond well to Instagram and apps like Remind 101. We are looking to expand our digital platforms though. So TY to everyone for sharing #satchat
#satchat. If you live in PA like I do vote Toomey out next time, along wait but remember he is no friend to education. He put in a special request in the Tax Bill for Besty Devos and friends for charter schools in higher ed.
A4 #satchat I learned a lot about SeeSaw in my "Tech in the Classroom" course, so I would love to use this webtool in my future classroom. I also have learned the importance of social media, like twitter.
I think that is the solution yet the challenge. Ps like Ts have favorite social media platforms. If u go deep w one, it might fit u as an ed system but not your community as a whole. I fear we are limiting ourselves w Twitter (hate to say) & not going w...FaceBook too? #satchat

A4: Our parents prefer Facebook and the school website. We do have some groups on Remind and Google Classroom, and many Ts use their own grade or class specific tools. #satchat
A4: At the elementary level, I think Class Dojo is the most powerful communication tool we have! All of our teachers have it set up and more than half of our parents are connected and use it daily! #satchat
Traitorous Obama and loser Hillary Clinton have been traveling through Asia shadowing POTUS and making speeches, a clear violation of the Logan Act

A3: invite them@to be a part of your Community Involvement Committee. Involve them in your functions- give them a voice. Share your projects with them on Social Media. #Satchat
What strikes me the most is how they empowered T's to share their classrooms. District leaders like @ErinKMcGurk trusted T's and it is paying off daily. #satchat
In reply to
@JeremyDBond, @cshunnarah, @ErinKMcGurk
Right! As a parent, it would be nice to give us time to incorporate into our schedules.
Just like they give us school calendars. A parent event calendar would be useful too ☺️
#satchat
Thank you for sharing, John! Wow...yet another example of how being a connected educator impacts our work and drives us towards excellence. I'll be in touch... #satchat
A4 I loved using Remind to keep parents in the loop about upcoming class events. Dojo was great for real time notifications for parents about their kiddos. #satchat
That's awesome! Sometimes I call the parents of my Heritage Learners simply to connect with them in Spanish. I think sometimes they feel overlooked because a lot of them don't even speak English at all. Occasionally they don't know what's going on with their children.
A4: I love using Twitter. Great way to get realtime info out to parents. We also use Facebook, @SmorePages , @lucidpress and @schoolmessenger. I also like to use my Principal's blog! #satchat
Teach young people that their community is important. Get them involved in volunteering, business events, etc. There is a lot more to learn than just state mandated content. #satchat
A4 #GoogleClassroom is my favorite from T and P perspective. Interface is easy, uses an account we are already familiar with, that's how Ss do most digital work. All in one place! #satchat
A4: My favorite digital tools are Twitter and adding to the principal’s weekly digital newsletter. Tried a “Curriculum Corner” of the website but realized it wasn’t getting much traffic. Now that I’m reflecting, why was I throwing curriculum to the corner? 😭😭😭😑 #Satchat
A4: class website like mine here (https://t.co/u9nHvfpcdk) with Mailchimp for facilitating a quarterly newsletter. Also, sync Instagram (https://t.co/S5dYZXfPce) with twitter and Facebook page. Reach them where they are #satchat
So Obama fired him, warned Trump not to hire him & then Obama told the guy he warned Trump not to hire to call the Russians? Oh and y'all just thought to mention that now? Yeah that story checks out. #Russia#TrumpRussia#satchathttps://t.co/lg79y9bk64
A4: Google Classroom has a great way for Ps to see when Ss are assigned something. @SmorePages is good for newsletters and Remind is always helpful. #satchat
I'd love this but struggle w P attendance. Is this for a school or district-wide? Wondering grade levels. Struggling to draw Ps in 6-8 building. #satchat
Let’s remember that just because a parent(s) doesn’t come to school 4 events, conferences, etc. it doesn’t mean they aren’t invested in their child’s education or don’t care. #satchat
A1: when Ts live the culture and speak the culture it helps teach Ss. Invite Ps to school, call home +s, treat Ss like real humans (they are). #SatChat
Best way is to include them as part of your “audience” when doing PBL. Moves the dial on both audience and authenticity. Just spoke about it at VASCD2017
A4 I'm most comfortable w/Twitter & I know I need to post more on Instagram. Our SM coordinator shared an app for doing simultaneous postings on different platforms. I need to do this! #satchat
For those trying student-led parent-teacher conferences (fave trend!)...
Great piece for parents on how to make these successful by The @WSJ. #SatChathttps://t.co/UJloZZGHHz
A1 Rather than only telling parents what’s happening at school, we can also explain how what’s happening moves students toward meaningful learning and invite parents to keep building that meaningful learning at home. #satchat
I am now reflecting on whether or not I am doing enough ... using my power or persuasion to convince them they want to come to our event at night? #satchat
A4 @Seesaw is the best 2-way communication tool that I have found other than email. It is important to know that people are seeing and interacting with what you are sending #satchat
#satchat Guess it depends on the school and region. SM isn't as big as the SIS and website in our case since everyone had secure accounts that feed into other services. We need to be mindful of the culture here too so security of information important.

It’s hard to keep up with so many digital tools. One of our teachers just designed “Classroom Q,” where students can line up their Qs for teachers. #Satchat
The single most important thing to deepening relationships with parents is making them feel comfortable when they visit school. Allowing them access to all of the wonderful things that are happening around the building. Openness creates trust. #satchat
A1 Rather than only telling parents what’s happening at school, we can also explain how what’s happening moves students toward meaningful learning and invite parents to keep building that meaningful learning at home. #satchat
but many kids are having a negative experience at school and don't want to come out at night ... we have to be better than what is happening at home. Are we worth the effort? #satchat
These are great considerations. A limit of school-wide reward systems is that the school is determining the goals. Though if done right, kids feel empowered. Have resources on how CT does PBIS. #satchat

I'd love this but struggle w P attendance. Is this for a school or district-wide? Wondering grade levels. Struggling to draw Ps in 6-8 building. #satchat
#satchat A4: What I'm gleaning from many of the answers is that its not the tool- it's putting the effort into making sure you DO reach out. Digital or paper matters not.
yes, knowing kids can use Twitter is one conversation, but encouraging under 13 use is another. there are lots of similar platforms that are age appropriate we can use #satchat
We've used ThoughtExchange w Ts but not Ps. I like the idea of moving beyond the survey but u have to know your culture and stakeholders when you put yourself out there. Any other consensus gathering tools #satchat?
A4 our parent council has been exploring role of parent w T in learning how to help kids use digital common sense and civility - offering learning opps for parents in schls #satchat
Let’s remember that just because a parent(s) doesn’t come to school 4 events, conferences, etc. it doesn’t mean they aren’t invested in their child’s education or don’t care. #satchat

There are people that miss important notices because they are not connected AT ALL not email, not digital classrooms, not even cell phones. I struggle with the limit to how often face-to-face meetings are possible. Classic so much info so little time #satchat
A4 A digital tool is nothing more than a catalyst. The goal is end is sitting together, side-by-side and face-to-face, coordinating efforts to help a student succeed. #satchat
A5: Almost all digital feedback from parents is focused on individual students, not the school or district. What parents most want to know is how they can help their child be successful! #satchat
Beyond sharing the why, let’s help students construct their own “why” and invite parents to help their kids continue to think about that why. We have our students for a year, or maybe a few years. Parents are there for a lifetime. #satchat
#satchat That is for stuff happening inside the classroom. As far as parent communication is concerned I have learnt the consistent the mode the better. Avoids needless confusion and panic specially in critical times.
In reply to
@engineerteacher, @perryafinch, @TheBradCurrie
agreed! @SmorePages has analytics which help view interactions. I try to include surveys or questions of the week in parent communications too to encourage engagement #Satchat
The single most important thing to deepening relationships with parents is making them feel comfortable when they visit school. Allowing them access to all of the wonderful things that are happening around the building. Openness creates trust. #satchat
Also the single best tool you have when you need to make a not-positive phone call. Establishing that positive foundation sets everyone up for a productive relationship #satchat
Schools can lead too, though. Sometimes parents will get on Twitter, e.g., only if their kids' classroom is on there. But it gets them on. Don't hold back; lead the way. #satchat
And beginning and midyear. This time of "dipstick" allows you to see how ppl are feeling at different time throughout the year. It tells a powerful story! #satchat
A program called Thrillshare to push out to 1 or more social media sites at once (twitter, FB school website). Pushes can be scheduled ahead of time as well; is of Remind as well. #satchat
So true! Any time I hear someone say the parents "just don't care" I call them out for it. The parents care very much and are doing their best. We ought to do the same. #satchat
Teachers need to be responsible for posting the content that they want to be shared in social media. Once that is done, the head social media person of school/district can repost on the different accounts. Don't make the director the sole responsible party for info. #satchat
A5: I’m very involved in community events, parents are very transparent in social settings & more prompt to providing feedback. Ongoing conversations are key to building relationships. #SatChat
A5: At this year's BTS Night, I had Ps fill out a Google Form rather than check in with pen/paper - form asked Qs like What are your Ss strengths? What should I know about your S to help him/her succeed? Allowed Ps to interact with tech the same way their S would! #satchat
#satchat A5: I teach high school, so most parents are less involved as a general rule. However they do call me occasionally and will definitely email me if they have questions or concerns. I try to respond within 24 hours.
I'm glad they passed this #TaxScamBill
Now we know America will soon be a one party country...come 2018 BLUE is going too rain down on them. #SaturdayMorning#satchat
On this topic, if you’d haven’t read the work of Patricia Edwards from MSU, she is an expert literacy leader on how to get parents involved! Her research is incredible and engaging! #Satchat
Yup, attendance is a big issue. Just like we ask "would Ss want to be in our class" we need to ask "would Ps want to attend this event" Unlike Ss, Ps can actually refuse to show up! #satchat
A5 remind reponse, google surveys, are two ways we get feedback from families -digitally- I send photos home often with a little note of what the child is doing in the photo #satchat
We must take advantage of the tools that are available today 2 help support family/community engagement, but never forgetting the most important connection will always be F2F. #SatChat
A5. By email, phone call, Stop in appointments, through a parent group FB page, and the random requests “sorry it’s 2Am and I’m FB Messengering you Mr Smith, but...” NEED more interactive communications that are mutually convenient and effective. #satchat
A5: my parent constant is still largely traditional: phone, text, email. Started this year with using twitter to showcase more of my classroom/school but to really get parent feedback, I need to connect via Snapchat. #teachergoals#satchat
We must take advantage of the tools that are available today 2 help support family/community engagement, but never forgetting the most important connection will always be F2F. #SatChat
A5 Experimenting w/Flipgrid as way to gather feedback & create option for more flexible conferencing. For now, those wheels are slipping more than gripping. Further tinkering needed. #satchat
A5 Ask them- surveys home to parents to find out what is the best mode to communicate w/them. Never had a parent complain that "u communicate too much" :) #satchat
#satchat use googleclassroom to connect student googleaccount with parents, I share notes, homework, info..limitation is not all parents have a gmail...and some dont want to connect! Tchr in Ireland
A5 Digital feedback from Ps is not as easy as communication to Ps. Important to remember that ever if we're not getting email or Twitter likes from Ps, they may still have Qs/concerns. We need to continually reach out to let Ps know their feedback is important. #satchat
A1: Flooding our social media accounts with positivity and information. Backing this up with positive phone calls, all calls, and notices. Spanish (or other) translation, too! #satchat
A wise guidance counselor said to me when I was a young principal “Start w belief that every parent loves their child and wants the best - find that common ground and work from there to solve challenges” #satchat
A3 To find out how to engage community stakeholders, let’s ask them. What can we learn from each other? How can we work together to improve student life & learning? And let’s stop calling them stakeholders. Who are you close to that you call a stakeholder? #satchat
...and be willing to listen and then respond to the results. We may not like what we hear sometimes, but learning organizations treat such feedback as gold. #SatChat
A5b: Send out surveys to Ps, send out emails to get feedback; look at website traffic/other analytics and use that data to determine strengths/weaknesses of communication that can be addressed #satchat
I think our venture into Twitter has been good as a start w Ps. I think it is invaluable PD for the Ts and me--no question there. So ya, schools can lead but need to be aware as to when and what to follow too. #satchat
Agree and disagree. It should never take the place of what all parties gain from a face-to-face discussion. Sometimes digital tools convince us that "we've communicated". #satchat
A5: We take our school survey results very seriously, especially the ones related to school culture and communication! The results drive our building and district goals. #satchat
I see lots of comments on social media - usually the negative ones! Would probably happen less often if we were taking surveys more often and getting/accepting/reacting to parent feedback #satchat
When educators say this it’s because they are making assumptions about why parents don’t attend. It’s a great reminder for us to simply ask them why they weren’t able to attend. We might just be surprised by what we learn. #satchat
A5 We get plenty of feedback from parents. The real question is, WHICH parents give us feedback? If we only (or mostly) see and hear from white, wealthy, English-speaking families, what can we change? #satchat
This is a great perspective. And as many Ts/Admin are Ps themselves, u have to look at what u are offering & ask "would this be worth it to me?" #satchat
A5 Our approach is saturate all methods of comm. - twitter, facebook, email, auto calls, in person, hosting events, etc. -make it so you'd have 2live under rock 2miss any school news #satchat
...and be willing to listen and then respond to the results. We may not like what we hear sometimes, but learning organizations treat such feedback as gold. #SatChat
Whole other conversation.
Is this the role we expect of parents? Do they have the resources to do this? Would they feel like that's one of the only ways they're connected to their kids' classrooms? #satchat
Perhaps, which is why we are developing digital citizenship curricula designed to broaden student use of social media beyond working with peers. Social LEADia by @JCasaTodd is a great resource on this topic #satchat
In reply to
@AngelaHemans, @MrTravisDrake, @LaPucelle32, @JCasaTodd
Snapchat has become an important platform for sharing information, many people still see it as entertainment rather than a tool. I'd be willing to bet that most parents of young children have an account #satchat
A5: my parent constant is still largely traditional: phone, text, email. Started this year with using twitter to showcase more of my classroom/school but to really get parent feedback, I need to connect via Snapchat. #teachergoals#satchat
A6: Leaving today's chat wanting more feedback from parents! Going to add "Create Q1 Survey" to my To-Do List for this weekend and email it Monday morning! Thanks for the great ideas this morning! #satchat
A5: We take our school survey results very seriously, especially the ones related to school culture and communication! The results drive our building and district goals. #satchat

This would be very helpful especially with visual learners and for re-enforcement of lessons.
👉🏾And making sure the parents know about it!
#satchat
I was just talk to another parent about one teacher who do YouTube videos. 😉
A6: Get rid of your lame school website by turning it over to the students. Here is what our student-led “Media Makers” team did for ours: https://t.co/9Mdq67kCG7. YOU could start this on Monday! #satchat
Teach young people that their community is important. Get them involved in volunteering, business events, etc. There is a lot more to learn than just state mandated content. #satchat
I had a parent once who would email and call all the time but never came to a single school event. Finally asked and found out everything was on Thursday evenings and they had a standing family obligation. Moved something to a Tuesday and the whole family came! #satchat
I think you also can’t forget the passion for what’s communicated. If the information is shared with a positive energy, parents will be drawn into getting and staying involved. Add a Bitmoji for fun! 😜 #satchat
Speaks to important potential in schools communicating via more than one language & working to understand communication preferences of community's cultures. #satchat
A5 We get plenty of feedback from parents. The real question is, WHICH parents give us feedback? If we only (or mostly) see and hear from white, wealthy, English-speaking families, what can we change? #satchat
A6 I am making myself available for school/parent events so that I can give parents info and answer their questions in person. Doing two in January! Hopefully the word spreads and I get busier! #satchat
A6: This month we will launch the inaugural district newsletter called HTSD Community Update that will include information about events, activities, curricula, technology, etc from around the district. Informing and engaging our community
#satchat
#satchat A5. I think it's not always about tech...although very important. We reach out to the community thru gifts..most recent was our Thanksgiving Baskets to families
if we can identify and articulate our goals for parent feedback and engagement, then we can ask parents how they can help us achieve those goals - give them some choice in process to increase participation & engagement. #Satchat
A4 Our SMBT has been working hard to develop a parent handbook for parents. We hope it will serve as a resource for parents to easily access information! #satchat
Thanks #satchat PLN for the awesome resources and ideas for connecting home and school, after all, real life doesnt just happen in the school building!
Imagine a school environment where everyone started with that same caring belief about one another. Parents about teachers/principals, adults about students, principals about Supts., etc. #satchat
Responding to feedback w/ incremental changes to our practices is the number one strategy for improvement in all aspects of what we do #satchat#practiceperfect
...and be willing to listen and then respond to the results. We may not like what we hear sometimes, but learning organizations treat such feedback as gold. #SatChat
When I hear a parent is unhappy - on SM or over the phone, I invite them in to talk. They are rarely as angry in person b/c they know they have your attention. Face-to-face is the way to go, every time. #satchat
The only thing that will be greater than watching the Trump presidency collapse will be watching the future Hollywood film based on this story, in which the character of President Trump is played by a Transgender Male.
#SaturdayMorning#satchat
It’s not your job or my job. Our job or their job. These kids or those kids. We can not ensure all kids learn at high levels without this partnership. #SatChat
Can I just point out that I have 1 parent who follows me in Twitter? he can see what my growth focus is on. He can see what I am striving to improve about our school which directly benefits his child. I need more of this type of interaction. You rock @MikeLandrus! #SatChat
A6 Reach out to a sample of families with whom I haven't connected yet, just to ask, "How are things going? What should I know about your child that I might not have realized?" #satchat
A6: What I'm taking away from the #satchat this morning is to have shorter, more frequent communications w Ps & look into diversifying our social media outreach. Wish me luck. Thanks everyone for the great info.
A5: I’m very involved in community events, parents are very transparent in social settings & more prompt to providing feedback. Ongoing conversations are key to building relationships. #SatChat

A6: talk to principal about our social media presence. Ask for access to existing accounts (been stagnant for years!). Get school website blinged our. And talk to my Ss to see what they think I should do. They tend to have the best ideas #satchat
Offer opportunities for engagement: @CarverES_RH will be hosting a parent Lunch/learn as well as learning sessions on useful topics for parents before & after our PTSO mtg this month. #WhatIfWe#satchat
Thanks for the digital partnership, #satchat participants & moderators. I envision today's conversation enriching, sparking effective new partnerships w/families.
A6. I’d like to implement #restorativecircles as a part of our parent Forum approach so people know we are all equal & being heard. I’d also like to incorporate coffee chats in the morning and perhaps even do that in conjunction w/an Admin Team. #Satchat

#satchat I think a Q that’s pertinent to this discussion for principals/leaders is - does anyone in power at the school look like or share the same culture as the families you’re “trying to reach.”
Multiple methods help to layer communication, and get into the corners to reach everyone. At the same time, teachers and schools alike need to take care to plan and ensure their communication goals determine their choice of methods. #Satchat
