Ugh! Snow! Didn’t anyone tell Massachusetts that it is spring now?!
Just about all gone in one day! Lol :)
Hello tweeps.Sorry to be late. Hopefully everyone has welcomed our guest moderator for tonight - .
Warm Up: Like to use “Each Kindness” by Jacqueline Woodson. “Each Kindness is like a Ripple”
Hi Paula! OMGosh I forgot to say Hello Scott & Thank you for guest moderating tonight We are so lucky!
A1: Social emotional learning is vital to student success, but gets overlooked. I use monthly subjects from ClassroomChampions!
A1 My SEL links https://t.co/AsOeGFIjbo Building a classroom environment of teamwork, empathy and positive relationships.
Paula! I have missed you! Glad you here!
A1: I think SEL is being aware of yourself & others; making sure all our emotions fit in with learning.
Hello, Erica! How was your Monday?
Just read that book - it's in the . Great for discussion.
A1 Pt 2:I try to include partner work; group work and time for self. Ss are allowed to move about the room & sit where comfortable.
It’s not what you expect and I think it really resonates w/ the kids.
A1: SEL allows Ss to feel safe and involved in the class so academic learning can happen!
What are some of the topics that touch upon?
We just returned from Spring Break. But they got back into routine pretty quickly today. And I knew I had tonight!
Hi Erica - how are you! Off to a good week?
A1: It is hard for us to learn when our emotional needs are wanting.
Q:2 coming up in a minute...as Mr. Acevedo would say...let's get poppin
Yes - they were uncomfortable with the ending, but understood it could happen.
Hey Colleen - good to see you! LOVE Enemy Pie! I use the StoryLine Online version at the BOY too!
I think that’s what I love about the book - it doesn’t wrap up nicely like most would think. Good lessons to learn.
subjects include honesty, courage, community, teamwork, perseverance, goal setting, steps to success!
A2-My Ss are always talking and collaborating. They encourage each other and are involved in decision making
A1: As social creatures, we all learn better when we can collaborate with others, find our comfortable spot, and have choices.
do you use technology to complete rubrics? What do you use?
Awesome Jerry thanks. Nicely said - teamwork & empathy & positive relationships.
A:2 Structures like Morning Meeting, Closing circles, and Interactive Modeling help us foster a community we all deserve
A2: Lots for comfortable seating away from standard desks, small group and partner time, lots of opportunities to talk and share.
YES! Student Voice https://t.co/ORw0oUGzXC
A2-My Ss are always talking and collaborating. They encourage each other and are involved in decision making
These certainly tie in nicely with SEL.
I agree: If you don’t feel safe then you won’t share mistakes and then learning is less likely to take place.
A2: I focus on self regulation- students running as many elements of the classroom as possible. I take student suggestions!
A2: We have "Responsibility Partners" as in Learn Like a Pirate book.
Happy Bday to your boys!! Twins - you are so lucky! Enjoy your time off! Our spring break is near end of April.
Yes, Jenn. Let the Ss run as many routines in the classroom as possible. https://t.co/4gi80Tm1LB
A2: I focus on self regulation- students running as many elements of the classroom as possible. I take student suggestions!
"learning emerges in the context of supportive relationships that make learning challenging, engaging, and meaningful.”
A3: We totally embrace the idea that everyone has a gift and everyone struggles at something. We share/help each other through it.
A2: We use some techniques/strategies from Morning Meetings. I think it makes a difference
A3: I ask Ss to help each other solve problems (esp with tech). We also have school wide commendations read on the announcements
A3: Each morning during announcements, Ts are encouraged to send in “Good News” shout outs to Ss doing good things.
YES! We all have unique strengths to offer eachother without a doubt! https://t.co/FkwIRXYN4E
A3: We totally embrace the idea that everyone has a gift and everyone struggles at something. We share/help each other through it.
Love the Shout Outs! We connect with “Being Golden” and following the golden rule.
I think being involved in the decision making goes a long way with students. https://t.co/cNWXq8V3W4

Q:4 coming up...man I don't know how you all do this each week...You are amazing moderators!
This is so true All of those are meaningful to the learners. https://t.co/4sLuvNle0R
A1: As social creatures, we all learn better when we can collaborate with others, find our comfortable spot, and have choices.
We all need to do more of this. https://t.co/SOsSA0C9JA
A3 - Ask your students for help running the classroom. When they know you're open to their help, they will make life easy on you!
Getting going with the Morning Meeting this year. Hope to build in the Closing Circle next year.
A4: As our dear friend, , likes to say, “Blogging gives even the quietest student a voice.”
Ss know when you take their suggestions that you value them. https://t.co/D5NNg2gJa7
A2: I focus on self regulation- students running as many elements of the classroom as possible. I take student suggestions!
A4: I often use what I call selective partnering to bring out the best in each partner.
A4: Learn about those Ss, infuse their likes/interest into lessons to hook them. Have Ss talk in small groups before reporting out.
Q:5 Coming up in a minute
A2: I ask students to “Thank their partner” after a game or collaboration. Starting to do it on their own!
Thank you Scott - I will check it out after tonight’s chat.
#5 on this article. Try brainwriting instead of brainstorming - swap papers, add own thoughts in different colored pens.
A:5 for me is really seeing this as a strengths-based skill. Help them to utilize in positive direction
A4: Each week, each of our cooperative group has a new captain, helps introverts learn to take charge.
You are doing a totally FAB job!!! Thank you again for taking on this role tonight! Fun being on this end!
Jerrry - YOU DO have a page for EVERYTHING!!! Thank you for sharing - always!
A5: Make the extroverts in charge of recording thoughts of others, taking pics, sending tweets, etc.
A5: Finding creative ways to channel the energy of extroverts is a craft! Giving them responsibility over something they love.
Still don't know how you do this...you three are amazing. I am just trying to breath and enjoy :) https://t.co/bEpLcEFy0M
You are doing a totally FAB job!!! Thank you again for taking on this role tonight! Fun being on this end!
A4: One thing I use are “Partner Cards” They have a Prompt on them so each partner has a voice - not just one!
Do you have an example card?
I wonder how our friend, Jimmy is doing! Miss him at our notes.
A4&5 Teach kids to recognize + & - roles kids play in groups & recognize what role they play. Set goals for improvement.
For Rdg mostly: Partner 1: Reads & Summarizes Partner 2: Asks a question. Partner 1 Responds to ? Switch cards
Selfassessment for sure https://t.co/tZWr00Yl6H

It is quite a different experience being the moderator, but you are doing such an awesome job.
Nancy! I was just saying how peeps helped me SO much. I need to get back into this chat. Hope all is well :)
A5: I hand out snap cubes during discussions and every Ss must add their to the groups stack. Visible accountable talk.
A6: I use Turn and Talk with an elbow partner. Students have a minute to think about their own idea and run it by someone.

We have grown because of you !
A9 love the idea of snap blocks. Gives me a great visual of who is sharing and who isn't sharing in their group.
worked really well for backchanneling during a fishbowl activity and also for novel reflections https://t.co/7eOkxdftoL
8: Has anyone used ? I haven't, but have thought about it. Any opinions?
Love the sound of this - please share a favorite activity.
Yes, I’ve used it with my Ss on a few occasions. Like that I can get a transcript on the room.
A9: Being thoughtful of how students are partnered to ensure success for all
I think I saw something about a seesaw student of the day. Maybe ? Want to try it
I would love to hear more!
Music Scribble is a favorite. Ss scribble as music plays. Bell Focus and Energy hands are other faves
