Q1 says the one with the servant's heart is the leader. Agree or Disagree? Why?
A1 Agree
Leaders don't just lift others up, they also do the heavy lifting.
A1: Agree 100%. No one can lead without the willingness to serve others WITH a joyful heart.
is interesting to say the least. Enjoy the ride!
A1: Of course - leaders don't lead from out in front, they lead from the trenches
A1: Gordon is correct - when you serve you set an example for others - they can't help but follow.
Super cool to see you try a new medium. Have fun growing your professional learning network with us. https://t.co/pVufOLEiBd

My name is Lindsay Reeth and I am a student at Elon University who is enrolled in a teaching course.
A1 Agree. Titles don't mean you are a leader. The one with the servant's heart leads with compassion & humility.
A1: Certainly. True leaders do it for others and not for themselves.
Welcome! We need your voice in ! https://t.co/vIjQruSOPv

A1: Agree. Otherwise you a manager at best, not a leader. https://t.co/2UgUyHYqIM
RT
Q1 says the one with the servant's heart is the leader. Agree or Disagree? Why?
A1 To lead, you are a part of a group. A person should only choose to lead because it's a service to the group. W/o group, not lead
A1: Agree. Leaders always do their share of the work to model what needs to be done. Work for others to make things easier for all.
A1: The one with the servant's heart will lead without force. They will also know when to follow.
A1-A great leader never ask their troops to do something they are not willing to do themselves
Looking forward to the . I am a perspective student at Elon University excited about the prospects of changing children's lives
One of the best things about Twitter chats is connecting with other innovators and great minds.
Any great educator is first and foremost a servant leader.
A1: agree leaders with heart lead with passion to empower others.
A1: A servant heart within a leader can and will inspire others...without service one becomes a manager.
A1: Agree! Leading by example & showing people you care will build relationships.
A1 reminds me of the difference between a leader and a boss. Leaders lead by example and coach from within the group.
Do not manage, lead!
https://t.co/KdN2X9AT5l
A1: A servant heart within a leader can and will inspire others...without service one becomes a manager.
A1) If I interpret this correctly, yes. A leader doesn't tell others what to do. (S)he serves others. https://t.co/g7mOfltMjH
Q1 says the one with the servant's heart is the leader. Agree or Disagree? Why?
A1: The person who is committed to making a change and best serving their community is definitely a leader. They want to be better.
AGREE! Zig Ziglar said, "You can have anything you want in life if you help enough people get what they want first!"
Good evening, Dave! Hope all is well with you.
A1: Servant leaders help others to become the best they can be.
People like to follow those who lead by example ... those who put the organization's interest above their own.
Leaders inspire others. Others (like bosses) just give orders https://t.co/aNg1qHTxWA
A1 reminds me of the difference between a leader and a boss. Leaders lead by example and coach from within the group.
A1: AGREED! If not it turns into a managing position instead of a leadership position.
Yes, and they inspire that growth attitude in others.
A1: Totally agree. From the trenches is where you see what needs to improve to grow https://t.co/0BaPl2nw5y
A1: Of course - leaders don't lead from out in front, they lead from the trenches
A1: Depends. One with a servant's heart can't lead without vision. Need both.
A1. Nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care!
A1 Totally agree! However, a servant leader must face & be able to make productive all difficult conversations/situations!
Leaders encourage others to live to their fullest potential and celebrate their successes!
Excellent point! And need to share that vision with stakeholders. https://t.co/Hs9TJp4oE1
A1: Depends. One with a servant's heart can't lead without vision. Need both.
A1-Servant leaders realize that it is never about them. Always about us.
A1 If your leadership isn't serving anyone you won't be leading for long.
. Agreed; however being a servant leader does not necessarily exclude having a vision.
It's always about the us factor.
Q2 says find talented educators and turn them loose. How do you empower your leaders?
I absolutely agree! Definitely can have both!
Absolutely !!!
We must still make the right call!
Serve on a day to day basis.
https://t.co/UDOmdPsiGv
A1 Totally agree! However, a servant leader must face & be able to make productive all difficult conversations/situations!
RT Q2 says find talented educators and turn them loose. How do you empower your leaders?
A2 I try to provide the environment for staff to run with their ideas. Our early release day this week will be an .
A2 Empower leaders by supporting them, especially in front of/as a model to those they lead
A1 Serving others is one sign of a true leader. They see the value in nourishing, comforting & helping those around them.
A2: As a T, I do this w/my Ss - hold them up as models for e/o & celebrate their successes - encourage them to try & experiment
A1: I agree that a leader must have a servant's heart because it takes a truly impressive person to serve side by side with others.
A2: Find like minds and give them the resources to do good work. Form a tribe of these people!
A1: Agree! Leaders model and set good examples for others
A2 Indeed has so many leaders to build culture and try new innovative ideas.

What type of resources do you think are needed for success?

A1 Give them choice and freedom to explore. Allow them to have a voice and speak freely...knowing they are heard and respected
A2: Support them. Trust them to make decisions ... and have their back.
A2. The desire to Micro-manage is a clear sign that you have the wrong people on your team.

True - those leaders usually aren't born, they are sponges that are open to suggestion and coaching.
A1 Leaders can still be tough, must have a vision while being a servant. As long as there is LOVE for those you are leading
The follow-through of having someone's back is fundamental to leading
Yes, agreed. Great response, Jeffrey!
A2:Empower leaders = encouraging risk & support ideas. Seeing the big picture grows confidence. Celebrate victories, large & small

A2: When talented educators are empowered its because they are trusted and encouraged to seek greatness without fear of judgement
A2 Empower talented educators with descriptive feedback; through Cognitive Caoching they will strive
A2: Creat a culture where it is ok to "fail" ... because that's when innovation will thrive.
A2. Empowering is also caring enough to provide our best teachers with continual feedback and praise.
A2: S leaders, ask them about their goals/visions & then do everything you can to guide them to it while putting it in their hands.

A2-By allowing them to take risk and removing the fear of failure. Help develop that in them
YES!! Teachers need more than one observation a year. Continual feedback to help them grow. https://t.co/SjhMkNiLAq
A2. Empowering is also caring enough to provide our best teachers with continual feedback and praise.
Perhaps some leaders are born and others who are moved to lead seek?
Learning from failure should be fostered, of course
When you don't win, you can still learn. Failure is an opportunity to learn and do better.
Another case where good teaching practice overlaps w/good leading practice
Q3 talks about "doing whatever it takes to help people win." Where do you see this happening?
A2) Empower educators who embrace change. They teach everybody, and they're ultimately the ones students and parents respect most.
Q2: Empower your leaders by outwardly trusting their instincts!
A2: Empowerment is done by encouragement, honesty and love. If they know you care about them, they will run through walls for you
A2 Choosing the right leader should make empowering them the next logical step.
Yes! This is empowerment!! https://t.co/BkOKxRcWl7
A2: Creat a culture where it is ok to "fail" ... because that's when innovation will thrive.

Q3 talks about "doing whatever it takes to help people win." Where do you see this happening?
RT Q3 talks about "doing whatever it takes to help people win." Where do you see this happening?
Fearing failure is one of the hardest habits to break. Can't be done in one class. Happens over time.
A3: In schools, everyday. Ts giving of their own time outside of class to provide students the help they need.
A3: Good teaching practice overlapping w/good leading practice-I give my Ss every opportunity to "win"&expect leaders 2 do the same
A3: We see this in the boards we work in. We provide evaluations, inventories, plans so they can keep growing towards success.
Doesn't always happen, does it? https://t.co/0d5pdFDhnf
A2 Choosing the right leader should make empowering them the next logical step.
A3 I see people helping one another every day in my school without concern for who gets the credit when a student succeeds.
A3: In the classroom. Every day. Whatever it takes!
A3 is filled with leaders working on and so much more
A1 Ts are constantly fighting for Ss so they can win...no matter how small the victories!
Key words in A2 about empowering leaders:

LOVE
FEEDBACK
AUTONOMY
A3: When people have passion and motivation for being better, and helping scholars, they will win. We're glad to be able to help.
A3: I see it every day when I walk through classrooms--teachers creating conditions for kids to win!
A3: I see this happening when teachers meet with learners outside of class.
A3: Failure is not an option for Ss nor for Ts - leaders meet Ts in their failures and stand by them.
. Is the right team in place to choose the right leader? You take a chance with everyone who is hired; can be minimized
A3: In the classroom, Ts challenging Ss to strive to their fullest potential.
A3: My colleagues and I share much w/ one another bc we have similar phil. of ed, and want to see our Ss learn.
A3: I see it nightly as I sit up until 1:00am scaffolding a lesson to meet my S's needs while emailing my teammates doing the same.
I love the use of that acronym. So poignant and insightful. https://t.co/m9tQfj85Lj
One of my fav borrowed quotes: First Attempt In Learning
By supporting your students in everything they do: academics, athletics, extra-cirriculars and out of school activies.
A3 I see a Parent Leadership Council in KY giving parents the tools they need to advocate for their kids .
Agreed. Has to be taught. Sometimes person by person.

A3 They have to know that you are on their side, that you beleive in them as people, and that you care about more than subject area
A3-I see it in my teachers' eyes
when they lose sleep trying to make sure they are doing their best for their Ss
It's always the little things that make the biggest difference!
Q3: To "do whatever it takes to help people win" means encompassing the qualities of a team-player in every sense of the word
A3 By supporting your students in everything they do: academics, athletics, extra-cirriculars and out of school activies.

A3: This happens when Ts attend PD on their own time & their own time because they want to give their best to their learners
A3: teachers building relationships and talking to students about what is important in their lives
A3 Personalized learning has put our S's in charge of how they learn and given them a voice.
Building a takes time for sure, but is well worth it.
A3-When you see a T drive a student home after tutorials since their parents do not have a car
This is so true. When Ts or Ss know that you are on their side & have their back they will move mountains! https://t.co/raNPB9tAh1
A3 They have to know that you are on their side, that you beleive in them as people, and that you care about more than subject area
A3 First of all...You only do what it takes if it is ethical! Just saying’
Yes. That support is more helpful than we may think.
A3: It happens everyday in great classrooms where the teachers set themselves aside and raise up their students.
It also takes difficult decisions and conversations that if handled well can be very productive https://t.co/hfRg8Z1tj0
Building a takes time for sure, but is well worth it.
Q4 How can we teach students to serve and empower others? Why is this important?

Raising up the students.

A3: It happens everyday in great classrooms where the teachers set themselves aside and raise up their students.
A4: The same way we teach Ss anything--through modeling. Show them what service looks like.
A4: model and lead by example
A3 I see this happening everywhere possible; sometimes something small, sometimes something really big
A4 Give them real life practice. There are opportunities to serve everywhere you look!
RT
Q4 How can we teach students to serve and empower others? Why is this important?
A3: Don't always feel like the court has to look the same. Give individuals room to grow...Ts and Ss
A3 - Call me an underachiever, but winning isn't everything. I don't need to win to be successful.
As long as we fail forward! Move forward. Grow forward.
A4: By modeling it! Serve & empower Ss & they will pay it forward. Beyond prof. practice, it teaches Ss to be humane and empathetic
And families, too. https://t.co/qBgoyl872A
This is so true. When Ts or Ss know that you are on their side & have their back they will move mountains! https://t.co/raNPB9tAh1

A4: We must model and insist on caring for others & giving of ourselves with no expectation of reward - it's what quality people do
A4: lead by example and seek out a common ground with your students
A4: Model, model, model...
Ss learn by seeing it done, not by being told how to do it.
A4 I just had a conversation with about this today. Ts & Ss need to feel connected to school. Serving & empowering helps.
A3 Doing whatever it takes means making productive sacrifices for the person your supporting, you, and your family
Real life pracrices makes more of a connection.

Connections are key to our understandings and beliefs!
A4 modeling compassion and respect. Showing them how to succeed through adversity.
Serving for something you are passionate about....this is a gift you receive.

A4 We're doing a lot of service based learning and projects to benefit the community.
Colorado, hit up Monday's at 7 pm CST. Chats are a great way to get the most out of Twitter. DM to learn more.
A5: Changes the focus from "What can you do for me?" to "What can I do for you?" We get better together.
A5: A COL is built on mutual trust & respect, which can only be fostered thru service & empowerment
A4 Give students a real life opportunity to be servants by putting them in situations that require it
Maybe it should start by teachers not putting down other teachers in the presence of the kids. Model positive behavior.
A5 A COL is filled with leaders who put others first and create opportunities that enrich the school community.
Very cool! Having students at the hiring table provides useful information & empowers them. They know! :)
A5: Imagine a world where everyone helped & supported each other. Where each person is celebrated & encouraged to reach higher

A5: If you give them the "why" you shouldn't get the "Who cares?"
Fantastic change of focus there. It is very helpful. We agree about getting better together.
Ironic that most of the the kids see is from the people who r there after crushing their competition
A5 If everyone feels authentically empowered/supported in their journey to excellence then genuine inspiration is built-in!

Schools and communities share the same goals and need to overlap more, combine efforts.
A5 Serving and empowering others is a WIN-WIN. We fill a need and at the same time are giving another the power to do the same.
Questions that cause thinking/reflection & solicit evidence of knowledge, skills, dispositions, demeanor

The best teachers have a servant mindset. Serve students. Serve coworkers. Serve community.
We do something like this---. Non-evaluative peer-to-peer obs. to celebrate effective practice
A5. Serving places Ego where it belongs.

Q7 TAKE ACTION: What is 1 action you will take this week to serve and/or empower?
Thank you for joining. Maybe you could be a guest moderator in the future for a topic on parent voice in a COL.
A7: 1-1 conversations with team members to check on where they are and what they need.
A7: I will do my best to give every student an opportunity to be heard this week.
I suspect, but if not...Continue to empower the Ss w/other endeavors; Have they presented at staff meetings yet? Hmmmm!?
A7 I will give Ts freedom and the power to choose what they want to learn during our early release day Thursday.
A7: I will start each class by asking myself, "What can I do to empower my Ss today?"
A6: The Servant (James Hunter), Tribes (Seth Godin), & Leadership Lessons (Bill Snyder). For Youth: The Code
I'm sure Ts will appreciate that!
A7: We are holding a on board this week to help empower board members to attract and retain the right talent.
“Life’s most urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”

A7: Put my wants/needs behind that of my peers - and especially behind those of my students.
Tribes is a great choice.
