Welcome! Dale Fisher. Asst. Supt. for HR. Deerfield 109. #tacobell Specifically the #3 Meal with Baja Blast Mountain Dew, 3 Bean Burritos, and 1 Burrito Supreme. I also eat it alone, in the car, playing "All By Myself" by Eric Carmen on a continuous loop of shame. #IASPAchat
A1: To provide guidance and support to our non-tenured teachers. We focus on building strong relationships. We stress encouragement, feedback, and conversations built on opportunities for reflection. #IASPAchat
A1: Assist employees in developing a strong and meaningful relationship with a colleague and the organization to increase knowledge, skills, and competencies that may be needed for current job duties or future career advancement.
#IASPAchat
A2: Don't neglect to define specific and relevant measurements of program success in the planning stage. These measurements should always be tied back to the mission and reportable. #IASPAchat
A2: I would avoid selecting only mentors that volunteer for the role. I would have a selection process to identify strong mentor candidates and try to match people based on skill sets and needs. #IASPAchat
A2) Perhaps we should revamp our mentoring programs so that they model the type of modern learning experiences we are designing for our #21C students? #IASPAchat
#IASPAchat I know this is about mentoring, but, HR leaders in schools never rest. I noticed the top story on Twitter this morning- thank you for all the work you do, 24/7/365.

#IASPAchat A3 - A teacher mentor program should be developed for first year teachers, but should extend for at least the first 4 years at a new school.
A3: I think one of the fundamental flaws with education mentoring programs is that it always seems to address new employees. If I had the means the mentoring program would be ongoing, for everyone, and exist well beyond the walls of the district. #IASPAchat
A3: I would include everyone new (admin, teachers, parapros, etc.) to the organization & offer 1:1 mentoring. Give mentees a say in the matching process by allowing them to select a particular mentor or list their top 3 choices. The focus would be all about support.

A3) I think a dream mentoring program would be ongoing, reflective, reciprocal, for all staff and truly rooted in supporting the growth of the #wholechild#IASPAchat

A3 - The dream program would be for all administrative positions and would include regular opportunities to discuss the relevant topics for each position.

A4: There's a difference between believing someone would make a good mentor and knowing. I still rely on the sage advice of @mikelubelfeld and @jeff_zoul. Even though both have moved on, they're there whenever I need advice or to be steered in the right direction. #IASPAchat
#IASPAchat A3: Differentiate for teachers. A 1st year teacher needs different support than a veteran teacher who is simply new to your district. Nothing worse than a veteran teacher sitting in a “how to conduct PT conferences” session.
A4: I am fortunate that @JohnSprangers & @mikelubelfeld are my predecessors in @nssd112. They have provided me with guidance, support, and laughter. They have served as wonderful mentors over the years. I would select them over & over again as mentors. #IASPAchat
Differentiation is the same for adults as the kids. People have different needs and there is some level of ownership in meeting those needs. #IASPAchat

A5: We currently do not have a mentoring program for support staff, but I hope to learn from all of you what you offer in order for us to obtain ideas. #IASPAchat
A2- Mentorship keeps people engaged both as learners and teachers. New administrators (and anyone new to leadership) should partake in the process both as mentees and mentors. A new administrator needs guidance, and can help their own staff in the process! #IASPAchat

A6: Our mentoring program is comprehensive and includes all the standardized training and differentiated training necessary and desired for our mentors to support the new employees. Full commitment to support is required. #IASPAchat
A6: We have a District Mentor, @Patty Samuelian, who is in charge of the program (she's exactly who you'd want leading this program). She provides training for building & 1:1 mentors (job alike) and hosts monthly meetings with this team of leaders. #IASPAchat
A6) We contractually build time into our calendar to provide support time for new teaches at the start of the school year (3 jump start PD days)…and time throughout the year. #IASPAchat
A7: We utilize both in-house support and are willing to pay for external mentoring as well. Many of these positions are so unique you need to be willing to open the pocketbook to provide the correct mentoring to new executive level admin. #IASPAchat
A7 For executive admin under Operations/Facilities and Business Services, @IllinoisASBO offers a mentoring program. Interested parties contact them and they place you with a mentor. https://t.co/92Jj8zOm1o#IASPAchat
A7: This is an area of growth for our organization. We do not have formal mentors outside of each specific role's own professional organization. I would like to learn from my colleagues what types of support they provide executive leaders. #IASPAchat
A6-Our teacher mentor holds monthly meetings for new teachers designed with a focus on Danielson Framework and Equity/Cultural Competency. She observes new teachers and provides feedback, has partnered with our instructional coaches for next fall's NT Induction.#IASPAchat
Hey @_IASPA_ do we know which organizations have formal mentoring programs for their members? I know that @ilprincipals have one, but I'm not sure of the others. #IASPAchat
Great discussion- been following! Mentoring is so much more complex than it appears on the surface. Interesting to examine models outside of education( corporate) and international models of success.
A8: I was left to my own evil devices. However, it didn't take long to connect with my @_IASPA_@_AASPA_ colleagues. They have never let me down and led to one of the main reasons we are so committed to #IASPAchat. It serves as a lot of informal mentoring/support!
A8: I was very fortunate that my predecessor, @JohnSprangers, served as my mentor. He was available for phone calls, shared documents w/me, provided historical context to decisions, & provided great insight to many topics including ADA & FMLA issues that are complex. #IASPAchat
A7 Last year I was new to OP. Supt set up weekly check-in/support calls with me and 2 other new colleagues. She also assigned me a "buddy" at central office. These weekly calls were a wonderful support. Thank you @kelley873#IASPAchat

A8 Like Dale, I quickly sought out any professional organization I could find. At that time, it was AASPA (predated IASPA). I went to BootCamp in Denver - ironically same time as IASPA forming. #IASPAchat
A8 - I attended every AASPA event I could because this was where I could learn. Also joined our county HR Group -PACT. Met other HR peeps there. Thank you also to @Mjohann51 who offered to serve as a mentor to me way back at AASPA in Detroit. IASPA/local HR rocks! #IASPAchat
A9. I'd like to see more opportunities to bring in relevant and timely PD to our local meetings or possibly hold larger regional meetings. For example, a law firm to discuss how to effectively process a request for an ADA accommodation. #IASPAchat
A9 I feel there are many options for our members-Mentoring, HR Essentials, #iaspachat, regional meetings, annual conference. We are trying to spread the word about what is available. Asking this question will help us to determine future support needs.
#IASPAchat
#IASPAchat@_IASPA_ Hey DuPage Friends - PACT is meeting tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at the Regional Office of Education. It is Jim Battle's last meeting before retiring. Let's all show up to say thank you!
