Here's QUESTION 3. Don't forget to put #IASPAchat in your response!
  • DaleFisherEdD - Moderator May 3 @ 9:17 AM EDT
A3: I think one of the fundamental flaws with education mentoring programs is that it always seems to address new employees. If I had the means the mentoring program would be ongoing, for everyone, and exist well beyond the walls of the district. #IASPAchat
  • Mschroeder6 - Moderator May 3 @ 9:18 AM EDT
A3: I would include everyone new (admin, teachers, parapros, etc.) to the organization & offer 1:1 mentoring. Give mentees a say in the matching process by allowing them to select a particular mentor or list their top 3 choices. The focus would be all about support. #IASPAchat
  • DaleFisherEdD - Moderator May 3 @ 9:18 AM EDT
Totally agree. Seems like we have locked ourselves into mentoring being only for new employees. We need to rethink this approach. #IASPAchat
    • BriantKelly2 May 3 @ 9:16 AM EDT

  • DaleFisherEdD - Moderator May 3 @ 9:20 AM EDT
It's an interesting idea to have a matching system or choice concept built into it. Personality has to play a role. #IASPAchat

  • Mschroeder6 - Moderator May 3 @ 9:22 AM EDT
I think we'd have more buy-in if you could select your mentor based on skills, needs, and personality. #IASPAchat

#IASPAchat A4 - I believe that any teacher could serve as a mentor...it is important to match teachers that balance each other's skill set.
  • _IASPA_ - Moderator May 3 @ 9:23 AM EDT
Here's QUESTION 4. Don't forget to put #IASPAchat in your response!
  • DaleFisherEdD - Moderator May 3 @ 9:24 AM EDT
A4: There's a difference between believing someone would make a good mentor and knowing. I still rely on the sage advice of @mikelubelfeld and @jeff_zoul. Even though both have moved on, they're there whenever I need advice or to be steered in the right direction. #IASPAchat
  • KeithWestman May 3 @ 9:24 AM EDT
#IASPAchat A3: Differentiate for teachers. A 1st year teacher needs different support than a veteran teacher who is simply new to your district. Nothing worse than a veteran teacher sitting in a “how to conduct PT conferences” session.
  • Mschroeder6 - Moderator May 3 @ 9:25 AM EDT
A4: I am fortunate that @JohnSprangers & @mikelubelfeld are my predecessors in @nssd112. They have provided me with guidance, support, and laughter. They have served as wonderful mentors over the years. I would select them over & over again as mentors. #IASPAchat
  • DaleFisherEdD - Moderator May 3 @ 9:25 AM EDT
Differentiation is the same for adults as the kids. People have different needs and there is some level of ownership in meeting those needs. #IASPAchat

A5: We are creating a program with services that will include differentiated program design, matching mentors and protégés, workshops/PD for job categories, ongoing support, and an evaluation of the program. #IASPAchat
  • petetheisD99HR May 3 @ 9:31 AM EDT
A4 - I have benefited greatly from my colleagues in NWPA providing advice and suggestions over the years. #IASPAchat
  • Mschroeder6 - Moderator May 3 @ 9:32 AM EDT
A5: We currently do not have a mentoring program for support staff, but I hope to learn from all of you what you offer in order for us to obtain ideas. #IASPAchat
  • em_mutt May 3 @ 9:33 AM EDT
A2- Mentorship keeps people engaged both as learners and teachers. New administrators (and anyone new to leadership) should partake in the process both as mentees and mentors. A new administrator needs guidance, and can help their own staff in the process! #IASPAchat

  • DaleFisherEdD - Moderator May 3 @ 9:38 AM EDT
A6: Our mentoring program is comprehensive and includes all the standardized training and differentiated training necessary and desired for our mentors to support the new employees. Full commitment to support is required. #IASPAchat
  • DaleFisherEdD - Moderator May 3 @ 9:38 AM EDT
This seems to be a trend for many of us. Maybe @rossvittore @Mschroeder6 and @DaleFisherEdD have a new project we can team up on? #IASPAchat

  • Mschroeder6 - Moderator May 3 @ 9:39 AM EDT
A6: We have a District Mentor, @Patty Samuelian, who is in charge of the program (she's exactly who you'd want leading this program). She provides training for building & 1:1 mentors (job alike) and hosts monthly meetings with this team of leaders. #IASPAchat
  • Mschroeder6 - Moderator May 3 @ 9:39 AM EDT
This could be a great topic for our @_IASPA_ group to tackle. #IASPAchat

Q7 Administrators are assigned internal mentors (other admin) for 2 years. #IASPAchat
  • DaleFisherEdD - Moderator May 3 @ 9:44 AM EDT
A7: We utilize both in-house support and are willing to pay for external mentoring as well. Many of these positions are so unique you need to be willing to open the pocketbook to provide the correct mentoring to new executive level admin. #IASPAchat
  • _IASPA_ - Moderator May 3 @ 9:44 AM EDT
Here's QUESTION 7. Don't forget to put #IASPAchat in your response!

  • rossvittore May 3 @ 9:46 AM EDT
A7) We provide executive-level mentoring through shadowing experiences & PLNs. #IASPAchat
  • Mschroeder6 - Moderator May 3 @ 9:46 AM EDT
A7: This is an area of growth for our organization. We do not have formal mentors outside of each specific role's own professional organization. I would like to learn from my colleagues what types of support they provide executive leaders. #IASPAchat
  • petetheisD99HR May 3 @ 9:46 AM EDT
A7 - They belong to groups by position (CADCA, NWPA, etc.) and lean on their peers in other districts for support. #IASPAchat

    • LoriCasey5 May 3 @ 9:44 AM EDT
Great discussion- been following! Mentoring is so much more complex than it appears on the surface. Interesting to examine models outside of education( corporate) and international models of success.

Here's QUESTION 8. Don't forget to put #IASPAchat in your response!
  • DaleFisherEdD - Moderator May 3 @ 9:52 AM EDT
A8: I was left to my own evil devices. However, it didn't take long to connect with my @_IASPA_ @_AASPA_ colleagues. They have never let me down and led to one of the main reasons we are so committed to #IASPAchat. It serves as a lot of informal mentoring/support!
  • Mschroeder6 - Moderator May 3 @ 9:53 AM EDT
A8: I was very fortunate that my predecessor, @JohnSprangers, served as my mentor. He was available for phone calls, shared documents w/me, provided historical context to decisions, & provided great insight to many topics including ADA & FMLA issues that are complex. #IASPAchat
  • LaurieMCampbell May 3 @ 9:53 AM EDT
