A0: Hi everyone, I'm Tom Ashley a TOSA Tech Coach @puhsd. I have a great friend that lives far away. We don't get to see each other enough. When we are able to get together, we celebrate by having an excessively expensive bottle of wine and pairing it with hot dogs. #IEedchat
A1: I never had a favorite. I am always open to "Spontaneous Celebration." B-day? Sure. Student of the Week? Most Def. Ts have to find ways to recognize Ss at every opportunity. #IEedchat
A0: my name is Lindsay and I am a Math Coach in SD county. Personally, I celebrate by treating myself to something special. Manicure, movie night, etc. Professionally, I celebrate by recognizing the work and success of others! #IEedchat
A1: for getting a 100% on tests and quizzes I give my students a custom made sticker. Also every 3 weeks, the period that has earned the most cool points during that time gets rewards to celebrate #IEedchat
A1: when I pass out certificates saying how many math facts Ss are now fluent in we do a "whoop Whoop" The kids love it. When they reach 100% fluency they get to attend an ice cream party at lunch. #ieedchat
A1: I like to celebrate growth when possible-in my Reading classes we celebrate words read, make a bar chart, etc. but we celebrate combined effort and growth not a top or winner #IEedchat
A1b: Any milestone staff should be celebrated, even if its a twix bar or a free juice from the cafeteria. Just to be acknowledge sometimes means alot #IEedchat
A1b: I love @PalomaValley's tradition of allowing the previous month's T of the month to select the next month's T of the month. The stories and the reasoning are almost so sweet and special. We love it. #IEedchat
A1: It's old school, but encouraging students to applaud after students do something brave like present in front of the class or step out of their comfort zone to answer a tough question #IEedchat
A1: Classroom celebrations happen in two ways for me. 1) things that I get to witness while working with Ts & Ss. 2) Data I get to see improve/change as my partnership with teachers strengthens. To me, the everyday celebrations & recognitions are vital to S success. #IEedchat
A1b: At my school, the staff nominates a "Staff Member of the Month" and that staff member gets a stuffed puma for the month. He/she hands it off to the next winner the following month. #IEedchat
At least every week, 5th gr Ss would monitor progress on charts. Some days just ask what is something you are proud of, pat yourself on the back for it. #ieedchat
A2: Celebrations lose value when they are done for everything and they feel like your just going through the motions. You need some emotion in passion in celebrations #IEedchat

I remember cool points at my middle school was pulling the sleeve of someone and saying "cool points" It was a done when someone did something that wasn't cool. You could also pull on the sleeve for an extended time and say "drainage". Hard to come back from that one #IEedchat
A2: When our student of the month celebrations only reward the 4.3+ GPA students each and every month, that gets stale. Thank god that rarely happens anymore. Ss who overcome great personal obstacles also deserve to be recognized. #IEedchat

A2: Possibly when a celebration occurs that wasn’t “earned” in one way or another. We can celebrate successes (S growth, S participation, etc) and “oopses” (a mistaken calculation, a bad internet day) but we inherently know when a celebration is forced and not earned. #IEedchat
A2: overdoing a celebration takes the pomp and circumstance out of it. I learned that the hard way when I over celebrated and students started to expect and demand more. The point of celebrating had been lost #IEedchat
A2: celebrations lose value when the same S is recognized all the time for the high grade or the best whatever-notice that? Others stop trying #IEedchat
A2: They lose value if they are done without enthusiasm or heart behind it. Gotta keep enthusiasm up or the students can tell you are doing something because you feel like you have to. #IEedchat
This is interesting.
Sometimes we hear make sure each person gets some type of recognition. We still need to make sure the recognition is for something authentic rather than manufactured.
#IEedchat
A2b: Maybe not popular to say here but we did not openly celebrate birthdays in my classroom. I did tell students happy birthday one-on-one .
#IEedchat
Not sure what a comeback would be.
I think teacher's need to raise their own awareness for what gets points. Not everything has to have points or a grade. Some things you just do.
#IEedchat
A1b: we should celebrate each other with simple acknowledgements, an email or announcement, but coming together as a group makes it more memorable #ieedchat
A3: We have so many tools today to celebrate our Ss successes. Use the school's social media platforms to build excitement for upcoming awards. Put the recognized student on the school marquee, mass emails, morning announcements, etc. #IEedchat
A2b:
For a bit I would use seating chart for ranks in a classroom. Didn't turn out well. Stopped that b/c the friendly competition focused on the wrong things. Needed to look at growth more, overall position less. #IEedchat
A3: I agree with @AshleyMSJC5 utilize some of the outlets we have such as Social Media to recognize students. I have noticed at my site CMI students love the Instagram posts #IEedchat
A3:
comments, that aren't planned, that show you are listening/watching/engaged by what a person is doing. That attention multiplies. Builds hype.
#IEedchat
A2b: I used to write the names of students who were having birthdays that month on the board. I stopped because the look of saddness on a student’s face if I forget their name was heart breaking. I want to start doing birthday celebrations again though #IEedchat
A3b: My CTI year 2 probationary teacher is on track to complete everything she needs to clear her credential. Looking forward to that celebration in May. #IEedchat
A3b: Putting on my @MSJCedu hat now: I greatly look forward to providing/opening a world-class campus in the Temecula Valley in the not-to-distant future and throwing a huge grand opening celebration. #IEedchat
FTs:
Celebration requires participation. Do something to be a part of it.
And thoughtfulness. Do more than just scream and holler and dance.
And we need to make sure we are inviting others into the celebrations
