Welcome to #LeadUpChat! We are so glad you are here. Take a moment to introduce yourself and where you are from. Today I am thrilled to be hosting our convo on "Leading From Your Core."
A1) To lead form your core, you have to know what you believe and why you believe it. Leading, then, is just making decisions in alignment with those beliefs and values.
#leadupchat
A1: leading from your core is about your WHY and your passion for doing what is best for kids. Your decisions are based on these core principles #leadupchat
A1: Example first. Builder second. As a leader in my classroom I hope to be an example to my students and other staff, I work to build their strengths so that it is easier to look together at areas that we might need to grow in, Myself included. #leadupchat
This was my first thought as well but you beat me to it. Keep "What best for kids?" front and center, and be flexible in leading toward that goal. #leadupchat
Our school district is Worthington City Schools. There's a saying that it won't always be easy, but #itsworthit - it definitely keeps me centered on the right work! #leadupchat
To me, leading from the core means that my actions are consistent with my values. This is sort of coherence is what creates authentic leadership. #leadupchat
Everyone has their own style - but all great leaders I've known have led knowing their values, sticking to them, and knowing you need to build relationships and always led from"being" not "doing" #LeadUpChat
A1 As Shakespeare said, "To thine own self be true." We have to stick to what we believe are the most important aspects. Some of mine are teamwork, student voice, relationships, etc. I never falter from those. #leadupchat
A1: Individual leadership is shaped by your beliefs (your core) about why you lead. Thy "why" behind your leadership shapes the "how" of your leadership. #LeadUpChat
A1: Leading for my core requires listening to hear what others have to say from their perspective but also listening to myself. Ultimately, it means always having the courage to do what's best for kids no matter what. #leadupchat
A1) Identifying the principles that guide EVERYTHING. Do you know what you are all about ... so no matter the weather, the people, the events, the emotions ... you stick to your core? #leadupchat
A1 "When you base your life on principles, most of your decisions are already made before you encounter them." Principled Principal @Jeff_Zoul@burgessdave#leadupchat
A1: Leading from your core is staying true to why you are in education. It is not always the easy or most convenient thing but in the end it is doing what you believe will produce the best results for those people who are counting on you: Ss and Ts. #leadupchat
A1: Leading from your core means leading from what defines you: the values, morals, and visions that get you up in the morning and say, “Let’s DO this!” #leadupchat
A1) I believe leading from your core means knowing your non negotiable values, sharing them with those around you, & loving them every single day. #leadupchat
Leading from your core means having integrity; being willing to do any and everything you ask others to do as well. It means making it about the movement and change you seek, not about yourself #leadupchat
A1: Leading from my core is to lead by what I want the example to be, by how I want to be treated, by treating others with compassion and respect, and by leading from a place of “we’re all in this together” and not “go do what I told you to.” #leadupchat#edchat#fromthecore
A1: It is when decisions are made with people and long term goals are aligned with our personal WHY. Hard decisions are required but they are easier to make when they are your beliefs. #leadupchat
A1: Just like in physical activities, your leader core is the foundation of every action you do. Everything thing you so should lead back to it. You need to build up like we are doing today! #LeadUpChat
A1 Hold firm to your beliefs, communicate your vision and let every action be the practice you preach. What you act upon should be what you stand for - that’s leading from your core for me #leadupchat
Love the use of the word modeling. That is where we can make a real impact on learners -- modeling digital citizenship, modeling responses to failure, etc. #LeadUpChat
A1: leading from your core = modeling the work, doing exactly what you ask of those you lead, grounding yourself in doing the right thing for Ss & Ts #always & never settling for status quo! Leading from your core requires a 🔥that burns hot! #leadupchat
A1 Leading from your "core" means that you know the values you believe in & you make decisions based on those values. It is the "hill you will die on." #LeadUpChat
A1-Leading from the core is being open to change, being passionate about change, and giving others the opportunity to express their opinions, views, and perspectives. Communication, relationships, openness, and modeling behaviors! #leadupchat
Love this! It visually speaks to me! Our district's mission is "to empower a community of learners who will change the world" - it isn't about dictating the work! #leadupchat
A1: Leadership from the core => understanding the human element of leadership: relationships, transparency, communication- it doesn't happen in a silo and the decisions aren't always the same! #leadupchat
A1: Leading from my core is being anchored in my values. Having an unshakable knowledge of what matters most to me in education and pursuing those values relentlessly. #leadupchat
A1 Leading in education always means kids first, but from the core of who I am means doing that with my unique blend of strengths - drawing the strengths out of others as well! #leadupchat
A1: Leading from your core means leading from your heart--having an understanding of yourself, and others, what you stand for, the "why" behind your beliefs. When you lead from your core your passion becomes others' passion, too. #leadupchat
A1 My core was developed by my parents- serve others, believe in what you think is best, find time for family and friends, and smile a lot. #leadupchat
A1: Leading from the core is based on your purpose. You have to know your purpose. Lead with character, maintain focus, lead with integrity, take risk and learn from mistakes! Have children at the core of every decision you make #leadupchat
A1: Leading is first, having a good attitude, building relationships, and having high expectations. Leading is then listening, inspiring and supporting #leadupchat
A1: To me leading from my core means leadership with integrity no matter what. Doing what is right and aligned to my core values and the core values of my organization even when its unpopular. Putting kids first and giving it to God when I struggle. #LeadUpChat
A1 If you live your beliefs you can turn the world around. Answer the question, “What do I stand for?” This question helps us define our personal core values. #leadupchat
A1 I think leading from your core means you can identify what your core values are and you understand how that impacts you decision/drives your work. Eventually you want to be able to understand where other people are coming from/what their "core" is. #leadupchat
A core that burns hot - fantastic imagery! Show that passion and livin it every day to seek the greatness in others and your oraganization. Yes! #leadupchat
A1: leading from your core = modeling the work, doing exactly what you ask of those you lead, grounding yourself in doing the right thing for Ss & Ts #always & never settling for status quo! Leading from your core requires a 🔥that burns hot! #leadupchat
A1 My core was developed by my parents- serve others, believe in what you think is best, find time for family and friends, and smile a lot. #leadupchat
A1 Hold firm to your beliefs, communicate your vision and let every action be the practice you preach. What you act upon should be what you stand for - that’s leading from your core for me #leadupchat
A1 Leading from the core mans: a) Knowing who you are as a professional and personal leader b)Establishing your vision for leadership c)Planning how your leadership with positively affect others d) Connecting with others to build their leadership capacity #leadupchat
A1 Discovering your personal core values helps you understand who you are and why you make the decisions you do. As a result, you are maximizing your potential as a person and as a leader. #leadupchat
A1) Just like our frame and muscles protect our essential vital organs, our leadership core is what is essential, our values and beliefs! Our core helps to protect us from the periphery issues and surface elements that come at us. #Leadupchat
A1b: Instead of leading from our core leaders, everyone really, should LIVE from their CORE. Ts and Ss want to know they can expect the same treatment all the time. #leadupchat
Leading from the core implies having a set of ethical beliefs about honoring the leadership role and aspiring to inspire others to embrace that honor. #leadupchat
A1: In Teaching With Intention by Debbie Miller, she asks, "When people walk in your room, do they know what you value?" I want my values to guide my work. #leadupchat
A1: It seems to me that a good summary of A1 includes both core values and core strengths of someone. I probably have the core values to lead a math classroom but not the core strength. 😀 #LeadUpChat
A1: Leadership can't just be about getting others to do what you need to get done, but supporting them to accomplish what they value, as well #leadupchat
Right, Jill. Our core values should determine how our actions connect to the vision we establish. Our leadership habits should align with stated beliefs #leadupchat
A1: leading by example. Doing what you say you’re going to do. Leadership is who you are and you don’t allow yourself to have “off” moments when you’re being selfish instead of selfless #LeadUpChat
Impact. Such an important word that sometimes gets overlooked in education. We spend a great deal of time planning what we will do or learning about various strategies. Do we spend enough time talking about the impact we are having? #leadupchat
A2 Only by understanding what you value most can you be the leader you want to become. Only by knowing what your people value can you touch their hearts and become the leader they want. #leadupchat
A1: Remember what it was like in the classroom and if you don’t remember- get in, involved, create a safe nurturing community with teachers and students... connect and nurture the possibilities! “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says I’m Possible” Audrey Hepburn #leadupchat
A2: Gotta keep reading and connecting with other leaders. From a design thinking approach, I also have to stay in touch with the world our kids are living in and their needs for success! #leadupchat
A1b: It means leading with integrity, leading with PASSION. Using your core beliefs about what’s best for students and learning to help make decisions. #leadupchat
Another thought related to Q1:
You can't lead from your core if you don't know who you are - what you're about, what you believe, and why you believe those things.
Until you know these things, leading from your core is impossible.
#leadupchat
And it requires deep levels of empathy...understanding that leadership decisions deeply affect/effect the experience of those you lead and the culture of the organization. #leadupchat
A1: Leading from your core happens when you make decisions that put students first - tough conversations, innovative ideas, etc. These decisions can be "gut" based or "research" based; ACTIONS that drive progress toward a common goal. #leadupchat
A2: Core values - (1). Moral compass, (2.) Focus on learning, (3.)Student, teacher and community voice to encourage dialogue, (4.). Collective efficacy #leadupchat
A2 Even though you are made up of many amazing and unique components, your personal core values are the motor forcing things into action. Your personal core values are the engine of your life. #leadupchat
A2: Gotta keep reading and connecting with other leaders. From a design thinking approach, I also have to stay in touch with the world our kids are living in and their needs for success! #leadupchat
A2: Focus on connecting with kids. Focus on supporting teachers. Focus on cultivating collaboration. Focus on bringing positive energy. #MyCore#Leadupchat
A2: Maintaining a relentless effort to build your social, mental, and emotional muscles through building relationships, reflecting internally and externally, and learning from others in any way possible. #LeadUpChat
A2: just as in fitness, you need to develop that core! In order to continue to develop mine, I find and surround myself with folks who will challenge me, listen to me & help me be better tomorrow than I am today! #leadupchat
A2 After 20+ years of teaching my 'core' had become flabby. Twitter connected me to my current PLN, my voxer groups, opened my eyes to #edcamps , and given me a whole list of books to be read! My 'core' has never been stronger! #leadupchat
A2 My "Core" is strengthened thru classroom visits, Team Time mtgs, opportunities to meet & have convos with Ts/Ss abt our work, and KIDS!! #LeadUpChat
A2: in talking with a teacher this week they suggested we do a refresher and reflection on how well we lived our school vision and values - seeing this question makes me think about how I can reflection on my personal vision and values more regularly #leadupchat
A2 Strong teamwork and relationships would be first-students, staff, parents, family, community. Priority on family first, student voice, kindness, and doing what is right for kids always. #leadupchat
A1 Leading from your “core” - not just set the example and expectations but living them. The core beliefs and values that you set provides the foundation for the rest of the staff to build from—strong core=strong organization #LeadUpChat
A2- For me, it's all about developing my ability to listen. You have to ask yourself, "what does it mean to listen?" It's not just eye contact or body language, it's about true connection! In order to be a leader, you have to know what your TRIBE needs. #leadupchat
A2: I try to start with "why" and then is this benefiting my Ss and me as a learner/leader. I think that Q is not asked enough. We get lost in the righteous cause of what is best for kids but forget about the self care. We need to have balance and that is my goal #leadupchat
Doing some research on Gen Z to better understand our students and how to support them. Also, I can't wait for https://t.co/EvJhwjHoUw again this year! #leadupchat
In reply to
@WSroufe, @heffrey, @Ms_Mac4, @CyndiWms5
Yes ... "You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with" - Jim Rohn. #leadupchat ... do you surround yourself with the right people regularly?
A2: just as in fitness, you need to develop that core! In order to continue to develop mine, I find and surround myself with folks who will challenge me, listen to me & help me be better tomorrow than I am today! #leadupchat
A2) Staying curious is integral to maintaining your "core". Keep reading, keep learning, keep observing, soak up everything you can to be better for students and colleagues. Also, checking your ego at the door! Something I have to work on daily. #leadupchat
A2: For me, it is reading. I always tell my own kids: readers are leadership leaders are readers. Dale Carnegie’s book is 👌🏻Also surrounding myself with people who are better than me; Watching and learning from them. #leadupchat
A2: As an #educoach, my integral components are the partnership principles outlined by @jimknight99: equality, choice, voice, reflection, reciprocity, praxis, and dialogue. So crucial. So hard. #leadupchat
A2: Constantly listening to understand, asking clarifying questions to gain clarity, restating what you are hearing to make sure you DO understand. And have some fun, smile, say hello, be authentic and be yourself. It can go a long way. #leadupchat
A2) Relationships! With Ts, Ss, & families. Taking time to develop others, & make those deposits is important to me. Honesty is also critical. #leadupchat
A2: Clore leadership components for me include being of service, doing what's best for kids even if it's not popular, and listening. I keep up this "core" by hiring wise leadership consultants and talking to other principals all the time. #leadupchat
Leading from your “core” often involves turmoil with some outside influences but that feeling of right and wrong always creeps in to make the proper decisions clearer. #leadupchat
A2b: constantly building my PLN and enhancing relationships daily builds my core as I surround myself with thise who support my core as well as challenge me #leadupchat
A2: Integral components to my leadership core include striving to clearly & consistently communicate, working to lift others up whenever I can, building relationships & focusing on being the change I wish to see. #LeadUpChat
A2: before a team can come together, a mission and vision must first be established...not only established, but believed, supported, and trusted...that vision and mission should be the abs of any institution #leadupchat
Q2. Great question and one that I think is very personal. It may be different for each person. Reflection seems to be the key for me paired with feedback. I am constantly questioning my effectiveness. #LeadUpChat
A2-Leadership is all about building relationships. Getting others to believe in themselves, in their team and doing more than they have ever imagine. #LeadUpChat
A2 Being connected. My colleagues (#BHSela), my kids, my PLN force constant reflection, motivation, and growth. They are the accountability and the resources, that is vital. #leadupchat
A2 I think this is developed by 1. Being reflective about your practice every day 2. Surrounding yourself w/books and educators that push you hard 3. Surrounding yourself with encouragement 4. Enjoying the moments when your work bears fruit #leadupchat
A2: Relationships, Relationships, Relationship and learning to appreciate that each step of the journey provides a valuable lesson in perfecting your craft. #leadupchat
A2) Integral components to leading from one's core:
Self-knowledge
Integrity
Hard work
Admission of imperfection
Love for people
Constancy of action
Perpetual hope
Transparency
#leadupchat
A2: Developing the core requires hearing the voices of students, teachers, and the community - knowing what is relevant to those you lead is essential! #leadupchat
A2: Constantly listening to understand, asking clarifying questions to gain clarity, restating what you are hearing to make sure you DO understand. And have some fun, smile, say hello, be authentic and be yourself. It can go a long way. #leadupchat
A2: personal core strength requires conditioning with legit PLN contacts, regular research, and an ability to maintain flexibility amidst educational shifts #leadupchat
A2: To develop a core, you must have a vision. That vision should be collaboratively constructed if possible. Bring your people together and guide them, through inquiry, to where you all want to go. #leadupchat
A2- Building relationships and trust is at my core. Plus you need to be genuine. If it’s important to you, others will join in and be a part of the move forward. Don’t be fake. Nobody likes fake. #leadupchat
A2 We have to connect with others that have different viewpoints. If not, we are operating in an echo chamber & just listening to ourselves. Doesn't promote growth. #LeadUpChat
A2b: There seem to be two different threads here -- the preparation and the application of the core values and strengths. Both are important. #LeadUpChat
A2: Relationships, Relationships, Relationship and learning to appreciate that each step of the journey provides a valuable lesson in perfecting your craft. #leadupchat
Great point, here. Without reflecting, it's impossible to lead from your core. Your core, if consistent, is developed over time reflecting on what you believe.
#leadupchat
And I think this applies to those with whom we interact in our PLN. My thinking and decision making in education is very much informed by the conversations I have with my PLN. #leadupchat
Yes. Working hard on relationships pays dividends one can’t imagine. Makes everything easier in the long run bc when people trust you and are invested as people first, great things can happen #leadupchat
I like "maintain flexibility amidst educational shifts"-- using common sense and seeing how to roll things out in a way that is best for students rather than being reactive. #leadupchat
A2: My personal core is made up of passion, integrity, compassion, & an honest-to-goodness love of learning. To strengthen my core, I read all the time, surround myself with amazing educators, & reach out to ensure (if nothing else) I am doing what’s best for kids. #leadupchat
A2) I have to remain focused on my purpose. I have to be intentional about reading & engaging in personal development. I have to make sure that all of my leadership decisions are made while looking through the lens of my core values. #LeadUpChat
A2: People, growth, and risk-taking are at my core. Living out "You don't have to be bad to get better" built on a firm foundation of relationships first. #leadupchat
A2: Personal core: Inform, dialogue, discuss, act. Building capacity. Giving others' hope, as well as tools, to make amazing things happen for kids. We are in this together. #teacherefficacy#leadupchat
A2 Our life experiences sculpt our core; those with whom we choose to surround ourselves can strengthen our core and check us when we veer from our values. Choose wisely and listen to sound advice. #leadupchat
Personal Core- transparency, honesty, compassion, Lead by example, Listen, Reflect, have a Growth Mindset, recognize and value skills in others & give them power to help you and others, passion, forgiveness #leadupchat
There is also the sense of inspiration from these chats that is important as well as the greater understanding that I am not alone in some of the professional challenges I face. #LeadUpChat
I like "maintain flexibility amidst educational shifts"-- using common sense and seeing how to roll things out in a way that is best for students rather than being reactive. #leadupchat
A2 Integrity, dedication, building up team members, innovation, embracing leadership as a calling to affect the greatest level of positive impact #leadupchat
A2 I think you need to constantly be trying to get stronger by stepping (or jumping or leaping!) outside of your comfort zone. You might not "want" to but the strength it brings is worth it. Also reading, connecting with others to grow your ideas & empathy. #leadupchat
Agree with you, completely. There's a lot of technical things that need to happen to create a great environment for students, but everything goes better when:
the leader loves his/her people
the people love their leader
the people love each other
everyone loves kids
#leadupchat
Yes. Working hard on relationships pays dividends one can’t imagine. Makes everything easier in the long run bc when people trust you and are invested as people first, great things can happen #leadupchat
A2 I think you need to constantly be trying to get stronger by stepping (or jumping or leaping!) outside of your comfort zone. You might not "want" to but the strength it brings is worth it. Also reading, connecting with others to grow your ideas & empathy. #leadupchat
A2: Relationships, others first, integrity, respect, authenticity, empathy, compassion, kindness, growth-focused.
If I can encompass all of this (and that's a BIG "if") and lead others to do the same, that's a win. #LeadUpChat
A2 being consistent, take responsibility, listen to the opposition, find commonalities between opposing views, remembering others have a perspective that I don’t, collectively we are smartest together than individually, being flexible, & accepting no job is too small. #LeadUpChat
A3: “There are three qualities a leader must exemplify to build trust: competence, connection, and character. You build trust with others each time you choose integrity over image, truth over convenience, or honor over personal gain.” @JohnCMaxwell#leadupchat
Continue to read and build on your beliefs. Listen to others and remember what it was like to be on the other side listening to your leader #leadupchat
A2 I think you need to constantly be trying to get stronger by stepping (or jumping or leaping!) outside of your comfort zone. You might not "want" to but the strength it brings is worth it. Also reading, connecting with others to grow your ideas & empathy. #leadupchat
A3: Having trust shows those you are working with that you are in it together, you have each other's backs, you are all putting in the blood, sweat, and tears to reach a common goal...it ripples to common trust back, feeling empowered to take chances, empowering #leadupchat
Leading from your core is authentic. It is leading by being who we are, not trying to lead like we think we should. Modeling just happens because it is authentic so influence increases. #LeadUpChat
A3: Trust is your foundation of your leadership...when people trust you they are more willing to take risks, to be innovative, to put themselves out there...
Because they know you are there to catch them if they fall and cheer them when they soar.
#leadupchat
Love this. Check in on progress of what you said you'd do and the team would do at every meeting. Highlight an aspect of vision, mission, and values. Repeat. #leadupchat
A3: Trust results in doing the little things well. That can be contagious but can also point out who might not be best for the organization. #LeadUpChat
A3) Trust is everything. When it's there, energy and creativity flows people can sense it. The opposite is also true. A toxic culture is identified almost immediately bc of the void that a lack of trust leaves.#leadupchat
A3) When we consider trust...
Am I trustworthy? Do others consider me so?
Do I empower others with my trust?
Part of our capacity to build leadership is founded in our core beliefs about trust. Performance flies when we have this high value.
#LeadUpChat
A3 People should never have to wonder what you stand for. When a relationship is built on trust it creates the potential to accomplish more. People will be more willing to meet you halfway or even further if trust is there. #leadupchat
A3: It’s a foundation to do great things. When those you lead trust you they will take on your causes to no end. Believing in the impact that educators! #leadupchat@heffrey@drneilgupta@Ms_Mac4@CyndiWms5
A3: Demonstrating that we trust our Ts empowers them to take risks & try new things in their classrooms. It gets people talking/thinking about how they can grow & what they can bring to their classrooms & school. Trust creates an energy that pushes others forward. #leadupchat
A2 being consistent, take responsibility, listen to the opposition, find commonalities between opposing views, remembering others have a perspective that I don’t, collectively we are smartest together than individually, being flexible, & accepting no job is too small. #LeadUpChat
Trust is HUGE. It influences everything. I've worked in high and low trust organizations. The biggest difference for me is anxiety. When leadership is trusted then everyone can relax and focus on the work that's important. #LeadUpChat
A3: When you trust your leaders that they have your best interests in mind when making decisions and not just theirs it makes a perfect recipe for success. More open doors, more opportunities to learn and grow. #leadupchat
A3: When we trust those around us. They feel free to take risks... and that is what is required for organizations to rise above the status quo. Trust is absolutely foundational to the relationships upon which strong cultures are built. #Leadupchat
People need to trust others to be vulnerable and to take risks. No one wants to be ridiculed or to take risk alone. Risk taking leads to growth, growth leads to the empowerment of the individual, which then leads to the improvement of our communities. #leadupchat
A3: People won’t tear down what they build up! Ts are cautious w/ leaders because they are often “just passing through” while teachers stay in the building. It is easier when they can finish your sentences because they know your core. #leadupchat
I recently shared a blog post on how leaders shepherd. I've enjoyed thinking about the symbolism in leaders as shepherds. https://t.co/usqW7ChUXw#leadupchat
A2 Serving others, being positive, making sure teachers can focus on teaching, outstanding relationships with stakeholders, and honest and ongoing two-way feedback within an organization #leadupchat
A3- Trust has the ability to unleash innovation as people will become who they want to be rather than who they are made to be through fear, stagnant relationships and systems. #leadupchat
Absolute pleasure and humbled to have my favorite UFC fighter and someone I look up to @felderpaul bring a strong message of grit and determination to the students of Fred Lynn Middle School! #FLHornets#ArmyOfAThousand WE HAVE YOUR BACK, you are part of our Hornet Family!
A3: trust is demonstrating a belief in your staff they can make decisions that will empower themselves & empower their students. Have discussions that amplify this belief and then get out of their way! #JustSayYes#leadupchat
A2: Developing my core includes always looking for opportunities to learn & grow, building relationships, and staying true to myself & my beliefs. #leadupchat
A3: People won’t tear down what they build up! Ts are cautious w/ leaders because they are often “just passing through” while teachers stay in the building. It is easier when they can finish your sentences because they know your core. #leadupchat
a3| The more TRUST in leadership, not just in education, the less micro managing, the less assumptions, there's more of a team spirit. #LeadupChat | I'm a parent.
A3 Lack of trust creates a climate of fear and anxiety. No one does well in that environment. People need to know someone is there for them, cheering them on. #LeadUpChat
The integral components of my personal core that need constant exercise are relationships via emotional intelligence, expertise via constant study, and regular reflection on my effectiveness. #leadupchat
I like your point about people who challenge your thinking. Too many people just want to be yes-men for the sake of being positive or not rocking the boat #leadupchat
A3: Leaders must walk their talk in order not to lose trust. Daily deposits must be made to others in the organization in maintenance of your leadership. #leadupchat
A3 One great thing about trust is it says to another, “I VALUE you and what you bring to the table. If you weren’t here, this gift would not be unwrapped to build others up!” #bettertogether#leadupchat
A2: Developing your leadership core entails active listening to gain understanding, serving to heighten your awareness, sharing your truth to develop genuine trust and staying present in the work with others to sharpen your skill. #LeadUpChat
A3: When we cultivate a culture of trust everyone feels safe. When people feel safe they have room to grow, fail, learn and take risks without criticism or judgement. Trust ripples out to parents & community and makes so much possible for our Ss. #leadupchat
Trust shows that you are “for” me, to serve and support those they lead toward growth and success; but must be coupled with the capacity to provide that support. It requires AND...
#leadupchat
A3: a positive attitude, innovation, collaboration, and trust are contagious...happy teachers bring a culture of positivity to their classrooms, and therefore instill happiness in their students as a norm. Everything ripples...choose to make the ripples positive #leadupchat
A3: trust helps ppl feel comfortable and vulnerable and willing to take more risks and believe in the process and journey. Also helps ppl believe that there is a vision and purpose for their actions. #leadupchat
A3: Trust, as the leader of a team/organization/staff, is like the ‘glue’ that binds us together. When a leader models/lives/shares trust, others tend to follow and/or share in the leadership. #LeadUpChat
A3) when you establish trust, it eliminates the “us vs them” mentality that is so quick to infiltrate our schools. It also allows all of us to be more quick to show grace. #leadupchat
A3:) If I share a demonstration of trust, others get to see how we are similar. And in being similar, maybe it’s possible for them to begin to trust also. They aren’t alone. #leadupchat
We say that we value risk, but risk requires failure. What happens in your schools when leaders take risks and fail?
#leadupchathttps://t.co/jJcGOx85a1
A3: Trust is one of the most important features of culture. High achievement is a byproduct of a thriving culture. Culture and trust are factors in school improvement. #LeadUpChat
A3: Love this from @StephenMRCovey “The first job of a leader—at work or at home—is to inspire trust." => meaningful stewardships create an environment of high-trust, which inspires creativity and possibility!...everything we need in our schools! #leadupchat
A3: Trust is demonstrated by letting go of the reins. Placing others, even the most unlikely, in small and large positions of leadership. Then cheering g them on and supporting them the whole way!👊 #leadupchat
A3) When principals trust teachers:
teachers trust the administration more
teachers trust each other more
teachers trust students more
students trust teachers more
parents trust teachers more
parents trust the school more
the community trusts itself more
#leadupchat
A3-Personally, If I trust others, I'm more likely to do more than expected. If I don't trust you, I will sit back and not say anything. When others trust you, they'll believe in the mission, and do everything they can to make that mission come to life. #leadupchat
A3: Trust is not the result of an event, program, faculty meeting, initiative, mandate, or newsletter. Trust is built when teams work together toward a common goal in order to support each other and reach the destination. #LeadUpChat
A3. Ripple effects can move in any direction- Top to bottom and vice versa. So, it’s imperative to build relationships with your school community in order to move the school forward. #leadupchat
A3: When you feel trusted, there are far-reaching benefits. You feel more confident in your work. That confidence creates provides courage to think outside the box. Thinking outside the box leads to richer learning. All benefit from trusting relationships. #leadupchat
A3 Trust allows us to move forward and grow as a community. As leaders, however, we need to entrust others yet be knowledgeable about their work. Blind trust does not contribute to good leadership. #leadupchat
A3 Part of having trust in people is having high expectations and believing that people will rise up and surpass them. People achieve what they believe about themselves and what they perceive others to believe about them. Does my leader think that I can impact change? #leadupchat
A3: Trust is the jelly to relationships (the peanut butter). They go hand and hand. They bring about a positivity that is a force to be reckoned with. It turns staff into a family, a school into a community. If that makes sense to anyone else. #leadupchat
A3 If you’ve built into people the time should come when their level of involvement increases. If that’s not happening some reflecting is overdue.#leadupchat
A3: Trust allows orgs, groups, schools to continue to move forward. It allows for difficult conversations to take place, to celebrate little wins, & to allow for students & staff to stay in the grind, pushing forward, relentlessly w/care, joy, high expectations, etc #leadupchat
A3: Trust is the foundation upon which you can forward intentional, & sometimes, critical conversations. Trust leads to a sense of knowing that change isn't about doing things better--it is about doing things differently to benefit the entire school community. #leadupchat
A3: If trust isn't built w/ others, ur not leading. You're attempting to do everything & that's never going 2 end well. The ripple effect of trust can go both ways. I'd rather err on the side of trusting than not. I like that ripple effect much better than the other. #LeadUpChat
A3 Part of having trust in people is having high expectations and believing that people will rise up and surpass them. People achieve what they believe about themselves and what they perceive others to believe about them. Does my leader think that I can impact change? #leadupchat
Headed out to take my daughter to breakfast... but I can’t imagine a more important topic for leaders to reflect on! I appreciate the passion of this chat! #Priorities#Leadupchat
A1: Leading from the core, I believe, means doing what' best for each and every student. As my friends says, "Love them BIG!" It all about building those important relationships! #leadupchat
A3: Demonstrating trust builds confidence in our people. Growing confidence empowers our people to make magic. More magic means increasingly targeted, engaging, and future-ready learning experiences for students. #leadupchat#kidsdeserveit
Love the idea of placing "even the most unlikely" folks in positions of leadership. It almost always pays off in huge ways, folks rise to the occasion. #leadupchat
A3) When principals trust teachers:
teachers trust the administration more
teachers trust each other more
teachers trust students more
students trust teachers more
parents trust teachers more
parents trust the school more
the community trusts itself more
#leadupchat
A leader's trust is most profound when he/she can see the potential for derailment around the bend, but continues forward because of his/her abiding belief in the team's ability to succeed.
#leadupchat
Have an awesome day, Danny! Developing your core as a leader involves modeling, and being a good dad for your kids should be at our core always. #leadupchat#priorities#dadsasprincipals
A3 That trust needs to be there so that “we” can get the work done together. Effective Principal/administrator is important, but won’t get anywhere with kids without teachers. Shared responsibility and collective teacher efficacy. The power for change lies there #leadupchat
A3b: It isn’t about leadership theory or anything like that. Trust is what gets communities through the challenges! When things go south, and there will always be that moment, people will security in the leaders they trust! #leadupchat
A3) Trust is critical and foundational to any interpersonal organization. Once established all involved enjoy the safety of shared purpose without judgement and the empowerment to take risks without ridicule that will disrupt the status quo and lead to true innovation #leadupchat
When leaders lack capacity, willingness to be a learner, personal and organizational awareness, ability to be vulnerable to those they lead...trust is often fleeting or never founded. #leadupchat
A3- We all need to feel trusted. This feeling allows us to try new things without fear of failure or consequences. Once trust is established, the baby steps will turn into giant leaps of faith. That’s when we do great things. We must model this for staff and Ss #leadupchat
A4: My students guide my teaching curiosity much of the time. If I expect my leadership to allow me to explore what interests me I need to be open that what I have planned for my Ss might need to change to feed their needs more. #leadupchat
A4: one indicator is if ppl come to you with solutions/ideas. That shows that you have been responsive and flexible in past enough to solicit others thoughts. #leadupchat
A3 My principal showed trust in me by allowing me to try something my way that he knew wouldn’t work. Didn’t take long to figure it out or see the wisdom in his leadership. #leadupchat
True and authentic trust leads to a huge shift in mindset. When there is trust, everyone understands that failing forward is necessary for deep learning. #LeadUpChat
A4: Flexible organizations listen to new ideas rather than complain or get fearful about new ideas. They might choose to use them, or not, but they have the ability to listen without shutting down. #leadupchat
All the information is here: https://t.co/TN0AzzouLG Our team offers a release day to teachers as well. In our human centered work empathizing with oboe users (students) is critical. #leadupchat
A3: Trust is the building block of all relationships. When people trust you, they will share with you and work hard for you. A trustworthy leader is viewed as a person of integrity and great character. One who is reliable, relatable and worth following. #LeadUpChat
#LeadUpChat Core, like with exercise, is the foundation of what you rest your entire 'next' upon. For me, it's 'what's best for kids' and i can usually find it in a root-cause analysis.
A4 A team can show flexibility when it is able to accept challenges and work to overcome. When trust is not shown within the organization, flexibility to change is fought rather than accepted. #leadupchat
A3 Trust means that you do what you said you would, that you are available to them to help & do that work. Also, when you don't know something, being honest & working together to find the answers/solutions. Building a team that believes in one another. #leadupchat
A3: I love what @RobinsonViviane says about building trust. We build trust by tackling the tough stuff together. As leaders, we have the conversations we need to have but do so with open to learning conversations. https://t.co/g7L83SD6fx#leadupchat
A4 I need to figure out where I'm needed most and spend my time there. It could be different daily. And I need to listen for solutions and ideas from others. #leadupchat
A4: organizational flexibility is built over time through intentional acts leading and supporting change in others that directly results in learning and growth of students. (Don’t tell anyone, but the adults are learning and growing as well) #leadupchat
A4: Flexible organizations build systems that result in regular reflection on values and norms. They also respond to what is really going on with those that serve. They have no illusions. #leadupchat
A4: Ultimately, this flexibility leads to trusting students and their attempts to take charge of their learning. That flexibility will take you all over the place. 😀 #LeadUpChat
A4 One indicator is when we have true collaborative meetings. This is when THE decision is created IN the meeting and not BEFORE the meeting.
#LeadUpChat
A3: trust is the foundation of school culture and has a direct effect on kids when present. The leaders must model it and will see the trickle down when they do #leadupchat
A4: flexibility is seen when grey areas exist rather than just black/white approach. It’s important to have a lens that can see grey and be flexible in education bc so many case-by-case situations arise #leadupchat
A4) I've head @jonlandis speak on three occasions now, and he constantly reminds me that we are living in the fastest era of change in human history.
That being said, if we're not fluid/flexible in education, our schools will eventually break.
#leadupchat
When leaders lack capacity, willingness to be a learner, personal and organizational awareness, ability to be vulnerable to those they lead...trust is often fleeting or never founded. #leadupchat
A4- being clear with your core values, high expectations for being responsive, having transparent processes for solving problems and celebrating others! #leadupchat
I appreciate the focus on being vulnerable. Leaders need to remember that even when trust is present, the act of moving forward is a risk that requires bravery & vulnerability. #leadupchat
A4: as long as what we are doing socks too or vision and values all options are on the table, at all points in the year, to do what is needed for our students - we'll make a shift in April the same as August! #leadupchat
A4 A culture that is responsive; thinks outside the box; and puts lots of different heads together to see multiple entry points. Critical to sustaining tho is a structure that communicates non-negotiatables. #leadupchat
A4 Organizational flexibility is a focus on making the changes necessary to positively impact the group of learners on your campus/classroom. It's not a one-size fit all mentality #leadupchat
A4: Organizational flexibility requires the admission that we were wrong in the past. When leaders admit they are wrong, are they honored for their integrity, or vilified for not being perfect?
#leadupchathttps://t.co/jJcGOx85a1
A4: The opposite of flexibility is paralysis...the inability to make a decision, to change course, to confront obstacles.
Schools that adjust, collaborate, and face challenges head on are the ones who succeed.
#leadupchat
A4: Org flex is a place where I feel Ed globally struggles. We have to be as adpative, proactive, and innovative as great companies. Find structures and new ways that work with the Same and Ts of today and tomorrow! #leadupchat
A4 Being multi-faceted Having a group of committed individuals that possess a growth mindset. Constantly working to develop the toolbox of myself and others #LeadUpChat
#LeadUpChat Integral is for me to be a learner and a teacher in the same breath and conversation. When we learn, teach.- Maya Angelou. I read, audiobook and listen, listen. listen. WHAT are Ts and Ss and Ps saying and how can I help?
A3 Without trust we remain positional leaders. Only with a high level of trust will people jump for a bar they think they may miss. Demonstrate humility and self-reflection while continuing to hold high expectations. #leadupchat
A4: Giving up our right to be right! We need to practice this more. We all have plans for the day, but if something happens or a student really takes the lead on the learning we need to be open to letting the reigns go some & allow them time to explore. #leadupchat
A4: Flexible organizations also create a culture friendly to the constructive conflict necessary to change when the institution is losing its way or seeking to improve itself. #leadupchat
A4- Flexibility is being open to ideas that are not your own. Having conversations where you work to find a common ground. What I've appreciated about my leaders is how they have empowered me through listening to my ideas. #leadupchat
A4: Flexibility also means constantly reflecting on where you need to be as an organization -- especially since that is a moving target at times! #LeadUpChat
A4: Flexibility and trust go hand in hand - a relationship rooted in trust is able to navigate a variety of possible solutions and ideas => Hopefully shifting from a "That's The Way We've Always Done It" mindset! #leadupchat
A4 Organizational flexibility can be defined as the organization adapting to size, composition, responsiveness and the people. Schools have been slow to transform in many of these areas. #leadupchat
It's a good reminder that we're in this rapid cycle of change, historically speaking-- reminds me to be empathetic to folks while also coaching them to be flexible. #leadupchat
A4: We have to be willing to adjust to our environment as we move along. Being flexible allows us to grow & change as new things come our way. #leadupchat
A3: When dealing with fear and anxiety in my role, those in my tribe are my cheerleaders, keep me going. These challenges drive me to build trust with my staff even more, stay focused and be the best leader I can be. #leadupchat
A4: You may know the intended outcome, but you need to give others the time and space to get there. Sometimes, you have to go slow to go fast. Flexibility is key. Anyone read Thinking Fast and Slow? #leadupchat
A4: organizational flexibility requires us to know ALL our stakeholders, their strengths & their growth areas. Each opportunity within the organization can leverage those growth areas and strengths. Delegate wisely, support fully and grow capacity! #leadupchat
A4: Flexibility is the challenge for public funded organizations rooted in tradition like EDU. The more Ts can find and make flexibility happen in their rooms with admin support the better it will be for students. #GigEconomy#leadupchat
A4: I work in Prosper now. Is there somewhere this isn’t a thing. Jokes aside, I wish everywhere had it figured out. Organizational flexibility allows us to put those best “qualified” to serve a purpose in that role. This question screams “District of a innovation”!! #LeadUpChat
Q4 Trying new things and not being afraid to fail as well as supporting Ts & Ss to try new things even if they might fail. Asking the important questions What did we learn and what can we do to be successful next time? It's hard to do! #leadupchat#eda655
A4.2: Organizational Flexibility is easy to tweet but harder to do, therefore is not as fluid as I would like. For some, change is a threat to what they have come to know. #leadupchat
A4: I think this comes back to our core. We can only be flexible when our core is strong. We have to know what matters most and then be open to changing our approach if it is not having the impact we are seeking. #leadupchat
A4: I believe flexibility is a challenge for teachers and administrators. It is easy to get comfortable with instructional strategies, routines, systems, and what feels comfortable. Flexibility is a blind spot for some educators. Good Question for reflection! #LeadupChat
A4) An organization is flexible when changes can be made fast enough to address changing conditions as they occur through joint cognition. Trust is critical in this regard. Organizational flexibility is impossible when we must constantly ask for permission from above #leadupchat
Q4-Intentionally building a culture of inquiry through systemized structures and processes that allows and expects outcome driven, patient centered change. #leadupchat#healthcare#OrganizationalFlexibility
A4:) Organizational flexibility breeds teachers that are okay making mistakes, and staff willing to take risks for the betterment of the kids and school. #leadupchat
A4 Organizational flexibility reveals itself during situations beyond our control. Problem solving and adaptability are needed. Communication and messaging are important to move others who may not be as adaptable. #leadupchat
A4: Organizational flexibility can also be defined when work gets done, where it gets done and how work gets done. Schools have long held a tradition of telling learners when work gets done, where it gets done how it gets done. We must shift this practice. #leadupchat
A3: Be open, be honest, be who your are and do what you love to the best of your ability. Each of us has our own strengths & stretches. Build on your strengths and work to improve your stretches #leadupchat
Q4-Intentionally building a culture of inquiry through systemized structures and processes that allows and expects outcome driven, patient centered change. #leadupchat#healthcare#OrganizationalFlexibility
A4: organizational flexibility means allowing others to lead, having groups of people working on different areas of the org to allow for reflection, looking at next steps, learning from failures, celebrating success. With distributive leadership flexibility is built. #leadupchat
#LeadUpChat Integral is for me to be a learner and a teacher in the same breath and conversation. When we learn, teach.- Maya Angelou. I read, audiobook and listen, listen. listen. WHAT are Ts and Ss and Ps saying and how can I help?
#Leadupchat It can be a ripple of calm, of soothing. If we trust and show that, our Ts and Ss can believe us in the good times. In the bad, they know we are still true. Trust in the big and the little. Little can become big.
A4) important elements for flexibility...
High belief in the mission
Frequent Feedback
Collaboration
Motivation
Interactions/Empowerment
Clear Objectives
Systems and Process Flexibility
#LeadUpChat
A3: Love & trust are the essential elements of a healthy school community and culture. You can see it, hear it, and it passes the sniff test. Admin. trust teachers to be the pro expert’s that they are and do what they do & staff know they have that support. #LeadUpChat
A4- being clear with your core values, high expectations for being responsive, having transparent processes for solving problems and celebrating others! #leadupchat
A4: Flexibility is key in education. If I, as an administrator, am too rigid with the Ts that I'm working with, it demonstrates lack of trust. I'm not in their classroom as much as they are. I need to trust them to know what's best for their Ss. #LeadUpChat
A4: organizational flexibility requires us to know ALL our stakeholders, their strengths & their growth areas. Each opportunity within the organization can leverage those growth areas and strengths. Delegate wisely, support fully and grow capacity! #leadupchat
It is easy for any human to get comfortable and lose flexibility. That is true of our students too. The more we can model flexibility the more they will value this core value. #LeadUpChat
A4: I believe flexibility is a challenge for teachers and administrators. It is easy to get comfortable with instructional strategies, routines, systems, and what feels comfortable. Flexibility is a blind spot for some educators. Good Question for reflection! #LeadupChat
Well-said-- Flexibility is easy to tweet, hard to do. Even when we are excited about an idea, it's slower to bring along our organization. People are fearful of change. #leadupchat
Agree! And the "recalculation" must come after we have measured impact. How do we know it's working? OR Why is this not working and how can we adjust? #leadupchat
"How many appalling characters must be wrung out of the West Wing before we recognize that the problem is the man at the top, who sets the tone for the workplace culture?" asks Michael D'Antonio via @CNNOpinionhttps://t.co/GR19jJf9dg
A4: Flexible organizations also have more than one leader. They divide and conquer their work based on comfort level, skill and passion between many empowered individuals. #leadupchat
This is such a challenge right now as many Ts point to strategies that worked to prepare student for a world that doesn’t exist anymore. #gigeconomy Ts are wary of the next pendulum swing. The world is changing so fast. #leadupchat
Flexible organization can be so difficult in education, because people don't like change. However, if we are solution oriented and open minded - we can be innovators in our field. #Leadupchat
A4) important elements for flexibility...
High belief in the mission
Frequent Feedback
Collaboration
Motivation
Interactions/Empowerment
Clear Objectives
Systems and Process Flexibility
#LeadUpChat
A4: This is evident when a team is willing to make adjustments for the good of the organization even if it’s inconvenient or uncomfortable. Flexibility and adaptability must be anchors in order for continuous growth and improvement to take place. #LeadUpChat
A5: Teams need to be challenged, empowered with responsibility, and provided purposeful support and development to increase their performance. #leadupchat
A4: One indicator of organizational flexibility is the ability to recognize something isn’t working, reflect in real-time, & make adjustments or even be willing to scrap a plan. We can not afford to let a personal sense of ownership cloud what‘s best for students. #leadupchat
A5 Working toward common goals while accepting different paths may be taken along the way. Crucial conversations may be needed to sharpen the focus. #leadupchat
A5 This is reflected in the dichotomy of patience and urgency. Finding a balance between teaching students that need us to be urgent in meeting their needs and working with adults that need us to be patient as they acquire skills and tools. #leadupchat
Agreed! I tell our Ss to surround themselves with friends who will help and encourage them to make good decisions. It’s about making those decisions when no one is watching that speaks to who we truly are. #leadupchat
A5:
Remove all obstacles that limit teamwork.
Warm-up and cool-down periods. We can't always be performing.
Create a highlight reel ... are you frequently pointing out what you love about your teams? #leadupchat
A4: As Ts, I believe that we need to be flexible. Working with children, you never know what might come up and if you'll need to change things up a bit. #leadupchat
A5: A collection of individuals does not suddenly transform into a team merely because they show up to the same workplace. A true team—one whose members work together to achieve greatness—has a unified vision. #leadupchat
And I think this is a collaborative conversation. Multiple measures of data give us a picture of what is working (celebrate!) and what is not (change!). #leadupchat
We tend to focus on the "work" in education but not always the organizational and system processes by which we perform at high levels. We can do better. #LeadUpChat
A5 We strengthen team performance by embracing a model of distributive leadership. Truly empower others and they will perform at an unbelievable level! #LeadUpChat
A4 organizations which are flexible have reflective practitioners who are willing to change the course if the outcomes are not what were intended #LeadUpChat
People need to trust others to be vulnerable and to take risks. No one wants to be ridiculed or to take risk alone. Risk taking leads to growth, growth leads to the empowerment of the individual, which then leads to the improvement of our communities. #leadupchat
A4. organizational flexibility requires real time to think and collaborate and plan. We need to Think creatively about how to provide that for educators. #LeadUpChat
Q5-Great question. Setting a strong purpose, CREATING TIME to meet, don't put too much on the plates of people doing extra, and keep the core of the work "about the kids".
#leadupchat
#LeadUpChat A4 Move with ease, communication and 'They Why' of the move is necessary. Convos about the need to move are necessary. In education we think we are flexible, but at times it takes so long that the initiative is a cliche by the time it is enacted.
Good idea. Also need them to understand people who don't communicate in the same way; work with someone who has a different skill set, challenges them. Can't live solo. But many Ss do? #leadupchat
A5: We strengthen our teams when we establish roles and organize ourselves to optimize PLC meetings, data meetings, and planning. We are stronger when we all have a purpose to work towards that directly impacts the growth of our children. #leadupchat
Q5: This is my kind of question. As a leader you have to make sure your team as adequate nutrition (PD, purpose, etc.) to drive performance potential. You do this by forming relationships and being involved. My son would say “good leaders aren’t chair-scooters!” #leadupchat
A5: Strengthening performance of our team requires us to sometimes hit the reset button and return to our why of what is best for our students. We are all leaders for our students and we are better together. #leadupchat
How often do we as leaders express our vision, mission, and values? I'm not talking reciting what they mean, but discussing and highlighting where you see it happening and where it needs to happen more #leadupchat
A5: A collection of individuals does not suddenly transform into a team merely because they show up to the same workplace. A true team—one whose members work together to achieve greatness—has a unified vision. #leadupchat
A5 As a leader, unity begins with you. You must find the dream in order to bring the team together. To rally a team around a common cause, you must see the vision clearly, say it constantly, and show it creatively. #leadupchat
A5) #communication is critical. We must find flexibility and creativity to keep communication flowing amongst all team members. This is challenging in our profession with classroom responsibilities. #leadupchat
A5: Again, this goes back to trust. Performance is strengthened when we trust the teams to do what they should be doing rather than attempting to do it for them b/c we think we can do it better.
Exhibit humility and be a "lid lifter" for others. #LeadUpChat
A5) Teams can work as efficiently as muscle groups when the goal is clear, a resolution is made to work with each other, and everyone does their part.
Teams don't work if they don't know what they're doing and they don't work if individuals aren't doing their part.
#leadupchat
Although, effective implementation takes time. We wouldn't want to dismiss something that will have an incredible impact on learning just because it takes time to implement well. #leadupchat
A5:
Remove all obstacles that limit teamwork.
Warm-up and cool-down periods. We can't always be performing.
Create a highlight reel ... are you frequently pointing out what you love about your teams? #leadupchat
Glad that it hit home!! Jon is an awesome author and has so many great books out. I would encourage you to grab one & begin the journey to leadership development. #LeadUpChat
We tend to focus on the "work" in education but not always the organizational and system processes by which we perform at high levels. We can do better. #LeadUpChat
A5 Build an effective team through strong hiring and interviewing practices. Keep the team informed through efficient, timely communication. Provide opportunities for feedback from the team, incorporating team members' ideas, prior to initiating major changes. #leadupchat
A5: Say yes. Offer support. Praise what you see. Model what you expect. Give permission for staff to take professional risks that they know will have a positive impact on our students. #geniushour#passionproject#PBL#LeadUpChat
A5: You LISTEN!!! What are the struggles teams are having? How can those struggles be supported? Is there an innovative way to do something that could take away stress or better prepare students? Support those that know the students best (TEACHERS) #leadupchat
A5: The question that needs to really be asked with this question is “Are you truly allowing people to lead?” When you set high & clear expectations & then allow people to truly lead, performance will grow. It won’t happen over night, but it will happen. #grind#leadupchat
We tend to focus on the "work" in education but not always the organizational and system processes by which we perform at high levels. We can do better. #LeadUpChat
A5: We find out where each T's entry point is to learn and lead, not where we think they are, or want them to be. Everyone's journey is different, and by acknowledging and providing support, this can lead to individual efficacy, and, with time, #collectiveefficacy. #leadupchat
Agreed-- some initiatives take time, training, and nurturing but have a large long-term impact. It's important to measure progress and not just final mastery. #leadupchat
Absolutely!! We've seen the value of providing learning experiences for students regardless of the barriers of time and space. We could also consider the same flexibility for adult learners. #leadupchat
A4: Organizational flexibility can also be defined when work gets done, where it gets done and how work gets done. Schools have long held a tradition of telling learners when work gets done, where it gets done how it gets done. We must shift this practice. #leadupchat
A5- A team is strengthened when we all know our roles, we’re empowered in those roles, we respect other’s roles, and each do what needs to be done in order to move our students, families, communities, schools, districts, and ourselves towards success! #leadupchat
A5: We strengthen team performance through many of the things mentioned before-trust, relationship building, transparency where possible, empowerment, opportunity to contribute regardless of role or title . We r all on the same team but that can get forgotten. #leadupchat
A5: To strengthen performance, you need to know where you’re at. Some of us have productive teams that are unhappy, some have the opposite. Invite another school leader to your next meeting to evaluate your team. Go to other leaders meetings and observe them. #LeadUpChat
A5:
Remove all obstacles that limit teamwork.
Warm-up and cool-down periods. We can't always be performing.
Create a highlight reel ... are you frequently pointing out what you love about your teams? #leadupchat
A5: When we give each team member the opportunity to operate in their area of strength & ability, the organization operates at its fullest capacity. Everything that a campus needs is usually already there. It’s up to the leadership to foster/develop hidden potential. #leadupchat
It would be so empowering if leaders did this more often! Highlight the good things happening that align with vision, mission, and values! People want purposeful work- #leadupchat
#leadupchat
A5 As leader, the goal is to have all of our staff members:
Understand the vision
Take ownership of the vision
Contribute to the vision
Pass on the vision
If all four of those steps are taking place, then I am confident in the unity and cohesiveness of the staff.
#leadupchat
A5: Form teams with similar passions aligned to the goals lead by innovative leaders. Reflect at intervals to assess progress. Allow timeline to last more than 1 year. #LEADUPCHAT
A5: vision and values alignment, curricular alignment, teaching strategies buikding year over year for students and making sure there is a culture of continuous improvement #leadupchat
A5: To strengthen performance, you need to know where you’re at. Some of us have productive teams that are unhappy, some have the opposite. Invite another school leader to your next meeting to evaluate your team. Go to other leaders meetings and observe them. #LeadUpChat
#LeadUpChat A5, as with other muscles, we have to work it out to strengthen it. We have to coach it. We have to see what's the good, bad and celebrate when it gets stronger. So, at competition, it's automatic and fluid.
A5: I think of best teams of all time. Teams thrived, but also had trials. It’s how we handle trials that tests fabric the team is made of. Do the teams retreat to their corner or do they come together to overcome? As a ldr how do I facilitate the later? #leadupchat
Q5: Trust. We can all sit in the same room but if we don’t trust each other or our leader it indicates quickly that we also don’t share the same vision. Lack of a shared vision will only have teams going in circles over and over. #leadupchat
I think prepared is better than wary. Many of our students and young Ts are facing a world where knowledge isn’t a commodity like it was, automation will replace human jobs, and companies will use algorithms to staff businesses. Let’s help Ss get excited! #leadupchat
A5: Ensure that your staff knows that you believe in them &/in what they contribute to better the whole organization. Also, ensure that where there is need, you are there to support/help. Build on existing strengths, promote collaboration and demonstrate compassion. #leadupchat
According to the @nytimes, a Russian sold phony secrets on “Trump” to the U.S. Asking price was $10 million, brought down to $1 million to be paid over time. I hope people are now seeing & understanding what is going on here. It is all now starting to come out - DRAIN THE SWAMP!
A new favorite phrase of mine is "perfection is pending". It is about the progress and the impact. Give evidence-based practices time. Measure progress and impact. #leadupchat
We say that we value risk, but risk requires failure. What happens in your schools when leaders take risks and fail?
#leadupchathttps://t.co/jJcGOx85a1
teams need to identify weaknesses and create a strategy to strengthen ... PD should be like a workout ... strengthening the areas that need to worked on ... #leadupchat
#leadupchat
A5. My favorite quote from this book so far. "You must love both that thing you are doing and love even more the people you do it with"
The key to a strong team.
I open lines of communication, I don’t hover behind them (believing in their capacity to lead) and I celebrate them with a team learning opportunity at the end of the year. #leadupchat
I like the idea of bring objective eyes to the situation. This is one of the secrets of #masterminds. Members vet ideas with outside individuals. 1) You get the truth and 2) it's grounded in "We want you to succeed. Let's find the best idea" #leadupchat
A5: To strengthen performance, you need to know where you’re at. Some of us have productive teams that are unhappy, some have the opposite. Invite another school leader to your next meeting to evaluate your team. Go to other leaders meetings and observe them. #LeadUpChat
JDenius: RT CyndiWms5: A1: Leading from the core = always starting with the question, "Is this what is best for kids?" #leadupchathttps://t.co/XZhidEtgXo
Actually, I just finished Disciplined Minds https://t.co/4JQNreMpC6 by J. Schmidt. Discusses things behind the scenes in higher ed / professional life. #leadupchat
A5-Culture is developed through conversations. We should communicate the purpose of growth for all. Make it a mission to be better today than you were yesterday. #leadupchat
A5) I truly believe we must hire and build organizations/schools from a HIGH social emotional intelligence level so our focus on relationships and ability to be agile to meet educational needs. We can coach others to have classroom "skills." Hire people with a core. #LeadUpChat
A5 Leaders strengthen performance of a team by being part of the team. They must build from a foundation of trust and respect for all. They identify individual strengths, delegate and share in the responsibilities towards a common goal. #leadupchat
A5 performance of a team can be strengthened by identifying essential targets, constantly monitoring student progress and reflecting on their practices. We need to constantly question and continue to distrust as if there is no finish line to learning #leadupchat
Yesterday evening, Michelle Ochs and Carly Cushnie of @CushnieEtOchs held their 10 year anniversary show at #NYFW. Models strutted down the runway in impeccably tailored dresses and skirts inspired by architecture, wispy feathers, and airy black taffeta.
A6: LISTEN WITHOUT JUDGEMENT...listen to staff without trying to come up with a solution or response right then and there...truly hear those around you #givelove#LeadUpChat

A5: I'm am a huge proponent of norms and protocols. Teams that define what their collaborative efforts will look like become stronger teams. Start with the WHY. Define the norms for achieving the WHY. Use protocols to provide structure to the conversations. #leadupchat
A5: For our teams to be successful, we need to foster the right set of conditions: trust, respect, passion, empowerment, responsibility, and freedom to challenge ideas. The right team with the right tools will always rise to the occasion. #leadupchat#edchat#JoyfulLeaders

A3: When we cultivate a culture of trust everyone feels safe. When people feel safe they have room to grow, fail, learn and take risks without criticism or judgement. Trust ripples out to parents & community and makes so much possible for our Ss. #leadupchat
A6 Love this idea from @sandeeteach & @alienearbud!!
I will explore ways to celebrate staff members that are doing great work that is aligned to our vision, mission, and belief statements!
#LeadUpChat
It would be so empowering if leaders did this more often! Highlight the good things happening that align with vision, mission, and values! People want purposeful work- #leadupchat
#leadupchat
A6) Finding creative communication paths is the critical next step in our organization that shares a powerful vision/mission and has tremendous team members devoted to kids. With this communication will come stronger trust and empowered innovation. #leadupchat
"And if you are wondering if there is anything you can do, right now to help your child, there is. Go & do something together that brings joy to you & your child, even for a few moments. It’s nutrition for the mind & body." #parenting#MentalHealth#SaturdayMorning#leadupchat
How do we help our students to be flexible? What environmental / learning / social conditions need to take place so they have the foundation to be agile? #leadupchat
A6: Always look to the next horizon. The good work is never done. When we accomplish our goals, that only opens new possibilites. My next horizon is building an enduring culture that outlives me. #LeadUpChat
A6 We have our building leadership meeting on Monday. It's time for me to celebrate, reflect, and refocus with these incredible leaders for the benefit of our students, staff, and school. #Leadupchat
A6- Continue to think outside of the box! I no longer want to live by tradition, I want to do things differently!! Also, continue to build relationships. Seeking out students and staff whom I have not connected with. #leadupchat
The more I read about the Gig Economy, the more I think it's not going to be as beneficial as it could be. Think piecework, lack of benefits? #leadupchat
My pleasure! I think too often we are far too hard on ourselves. Take the time to consider what matters most. Choose practices that align. Give yourself time to implement well. #leadupchat

Q6: For me right now, extend my relationships beyond my classroom and quad. Find time (huge challenge right now)to create the same relationships with my colleagues that I do with my students. Drive is contagious!! #leadupchat
A6 Put down the paperwork and spend more time visiting classrooms and talking with teachers. I can't help them with what they need if I don't know what they need. #leadupchat
A6: Listening to the heart of my teammates is key. Understanding their strengths and their struggles will allows us to build bridges of understanding. From there, purpose is shared and passion is ignited. I hope to be a catalyst for growth. #LeadUpChat
A6: Start giving myself more opportunities/time to be honest at where I need to get better for others and Ss. And do something about it!now 💪 #LEADUPCHAT
A6. Most of all practice what you PREACH. We've all had admins that said one thing (or their social media life was one way) but their actions spoke differently. People are very observant. #leadupchat

A6: I am always striving to be more clear in my communication, inclusion & customer service. I continue to work to ensure that everyone has an opp to be heard. I have learned that my integrity is non-negotiable, so I strive to model that for others. #LeadUpChat
A6: Do what you love and share those ideas with others who see you working your magic! When new ideas are presented, learn as much as you can. Again, if you are doing what is best for your students, you'll never be wrong! #leadupchat
A6 I will step into the other shoes more intentionally. I need to see how others are viewing change or actions especially others who are not as vocal in the process. #leadupchat
A6: Continue to learn & grow, even when it may be uncomfortable. I ask myself all the time, what can I/we learn from this? We need to be constantly self-reflecting & learning from situations. As my motto says #learn#grow#live#work#lead#leadupchat
Thank you to all for a great chat. Even though I don't know most of you personally, I value your work, collaborating with you, and all your contributions to education. #LeadUpChat
A6: My first step will be to get breakfast and then challenge the status quo of my team by always seeking counter arguments, even if I have to present them myself for my own initiatives! #LeadUpChat
