Our mission for our 21st century chat is to create a positive 21st century learning environment for our students by sharing resources and ideas that has worked in our classrooms. Join us every Sunday from 8:00-9:00 PM (EST) on Twitter using the hashtag #21stedchat. All are welcome!
A1. Teachers need to understand digital citizenship because we need to teach digital citizenship to our students when we put technology in their hands. Practice what you preach! #21stedchat
A1: #digcit is 21st century character ed. We like to think Ss know everything about tech, but they don’t. We need to teach appropriate use of tech to make them productive consumers and producers of web content #21stedchat

A1: A lot of educators expect students to use the Internet for a variety of reasons. It's important that we understand, instill, and practice safe and effective strategies for our students to be able to use technology in our rooms. #EDU5720#21stedchat@JMcCarthyEdS
A1 Schools need to facilitate the creation of good digital citizens for sure. I think we need to take the additional step of teaching digital leadership skills as well. #21stedchat
A1. Technology is advancing everyday. Students must know how to use technology. As educators, we must provide them with the importance of technology. Many teachers use it for submitting assignment, classroom blogs, etc. DC is only going to continue to advance.
A1) I love the saying you don’t know what you don’t know and even though our students are connected most of the time, this doesn’t mean they understand #21stedchat
A2: should know these acronyms better than I do. I know they are about privacy and student information rights online and whether websites and apps are compliant or not #21stedchat
A2 Students can learn from each other using web tools like @Flipgrid. Care must be taken when using tools like this to protect student privacy. #21stedchat
A2 CIPA, COPPA, and FERPA all end in PA = privacy/protection act! Protecting children on the internet is a high priority! Honestly, I had to search the first two. As an educator, we should be well informed on these. #21stedchat
A2) All are Acts that protect students in different ways: CIPA -Internet Filters COPP- privacy for under 13 and FERPA- student records. We should know this information and what is being shared when we expect the students to be online in school. #21stedchat#EDU5720@JMcCarthyEdS
We have to be careful what information we provide to companies about students. The less info you have to give the better. Avoid personal identification info. #21stedchat
@Flipgrid is awesome, but care must be taken when setting up to make sure that no one but the intended viewers can see replies. It’s easy to do! #21stedchat
A2 Educators Need to be aware of the laws that relate to children’s safety. It is no different than needing to be familiar with IEPs and 504s. #21stedchat
A1: Educators must understand the importance of digital citizenship in order to teach their students how to be safe online and use technology the right way. #21stedchat#pstpln
Q3 I have limited knowledge of the webtools teachers/students can use. I have yet to find a tool/website I am blocked from. Another topic educators with technology in the classroom should be more familiar with. This is helping me realize where my own gaps are. #21stedchat
#21stedchat A3) Students are not permitted to give full information (full names etc..) Also, we have blocks placed on our schools servers for questionable websites
Rt of Q3. What are your school/district policies about what webtools teachers can use? What student data security do you have in your district? #21stedchat
A3: Need to be aware of the privacy policies of many apps we use. Need to be careful sites are not using student info or data. Use of G Suite is great because of Student Privacy Pledge. #21stedchat
A3 I teach my Ss to be safe with their digital footprints. When we use @Flipgrid & @SkypeClassroom I moderate the topics to ensure safety. I obtain parental permission to use global connections. #21stedchat
It's not an area that is talked about in schools. Teachers should be aware of and reminded of throughout the year. It's easy to get caught up in a "good" site and forget about privacy. #21stedchat#ALPlearn
A4. To encourage personal responsibility with my 5th graders using the internet, I tell them to T.H.I.N.K before they post- is is thoughtful, helpful, inspiring, necessary, and/or kind? #21stedchat
A4: Each year, our media specialist and Ts review the computer use agreement and the importance of cyber safety. We also discuss cyber safety in our SEmotional program throughout the week. We saw "Screenagers" and Ss were introduced to OK2Say. #EDU5720#21stedchat@JMcCarthyEdS
A4: I try to stick with G Suite and Canvas because it is fairly safe for students. Try to give students opportunities to act responsibly and create a positive digital footprint with what they post online through online discussions and ePortfolios. #21stedchat
A5) Continue to stay informed about digital safety and have an open dialogue about what is going on in your classroom to ensure students are using technology appropriately. PDs on digital learning are also important! #EDU5720#21stedchat
A5. Also collaborating across departments to show that dig cit isn't only the responsibility of the tech department. Student services should be involved, it fits into social studies lesson, and more. #21stedchat
A4: When I do have my own classroom, I will make sure to educate my students about the internet and how to be safe when using technology. #21stedchat#pstpln
A5. Keep the reminders going that DC isn't only cyberbullying. There are many ways kids can make mistakes online, but people focus on this area most. #21stedchat

A5 Promote digital citizenship by making the information available to those who will not seek it themselves. Send emails. Post in a common workroom. #21stedchat
