The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
#BFC530 Alternative assessments for Ss may include collaborative project, rubric creation 4 work product w score, jigsaw exercise, peer review of drafts, student MM presentation
....and did I mention that I love that twitter is allowing me more typing room so I can express myself in more than 140 characters.... *jumps up and down* #bfc530
Good morning! Late flight in from Boston last night but well worth it! Lots of history and quotes to inspire and think about how to make substantial change in the world. #bfc530
I like long-term projects that involve multiple steps and a variety of ways for Ss to show what they know, with time for feedback, revision, relearning. #bfc530
By flipping my class I created time to have small group and 1on1 time with Ss. Those sessions let me know just where my students where. Progress checks and self-evals #Bfc530
Good morning everyone! I’m an AP so I don’t give too many assessments these days but I love to get feedback from teachers to make things better (Ex: Feedback about PD). I just finished my #ObserveMe to get feedback about myself ❤️ #bfc530
My favorite way to assess Ss is the assessment they choose themselves. Options are virtually limitless, Ss enjoy them, & I always learn something new. #bfc530
Good Morning #bfc530 tweeps.
Let's see. I am all project based, my most authentic assessments this year have been my student's self reflective blogs. I am reading what they are learning. Pretty awesome stuff
I prefer multi-stage performance assessments where students have multiple chances to get feedback and revise/refine their work while engaged in a meaningful task. Isn’t that more what life looks like? #bfc530
If I knew then what I know now, I would have given more projects with options for extension. I was always so concerned with getting to the end of the curriculum. #bfc530
1-on-1 conversations with each student and then listening to them share with their peers the work they are doing. This environment of collaboration & sharing helps me facilitate custom growth for every student. Every day. #bfc530
However they can show what they’ve learned best. It can be one on one, through a project, through writing, with a group... it just needs to be relevant and authentic... and it may not be on the first try! #bfc530
Assessment...observations and conversations are a big part, lots of documentation, and student products...with practical feedback included. We use @Seesaw for electronic portfolios. #bfc530
Not a huge tester anymore. Quick writes, Google Form reflections, describing their learning in pen pal letters, conferencing, projects that have process steps along the way, presentations. Regular Geo quizzes, at least 1 test, and an end of year test so they've had them. #bfc530
I also really like station activities. Interactive, approach a topic in different ways, but better for introducing rather than assessing. Like this: https://t.co/E1s04QM9aF#bfc530
What it is not (at least for me) is a 1-size-fits all. Each student learns differently and connects the learning to things they care differently about. My role is to dig in and find out how each is doing. #bfc530
An assessment is anything that makes it possible for you to see and measure what students know and can do. So it depends what you want to see and measure. Charts, drawings, roleplays, debates, stories, letters, concerts, games—they can all be assessments. #bfc530
Practical application. Students and teachers are able to demonstrate their skill set or deeper understanding by succesfully applying the concept in a relevant. #bfc530
I second what everyone else is saying. Projects, presentations, conversations, exit tickets, etc. are great ways to assess & add the bonus of bonding w/our Ss. #bfc530
A new app I discovered this summer called Chronicle notes. It was created by 2 teachers. #bfc530. I loved Confer but then they stopped updateing it. #bfc530
You should go again! The food, the history, the architecture are all great! Walked the entire Freedom Trail and relived the time leading up to the Revolution in a way that I handn’t before. #bfc530
Through a 1-1 discussion on Friday, I had a student tell me that they couldn't multiply a mixed number, as they never had to before. This student was exposed to it last year, and we have worked on these from day 1 this year. That was a tough pill for me to swallow. #bfc530
I believe that feedback and revisions are essential no matter what the subject area. My goal is to get better at that, more consistent, more frequent. #bfc530
Nice! The only traditional tests we do are mandated final exams (when we remind them how to do multiple choice exams). Otherwise, it's 1-on-1 "show & explains" when Ss are ready. Game changer! #bfc530
I used to use confer. Now I use chronicle. I set up my roster and take notes on each student. I know they have videos. Let me see if I can find them. #bfc530
Everything's fine - just hectic. And this time change makes it hard to join - we don't change time so suddenly I'm leaving for work during the chat #bfc530

Observation of the Ss and dare I say it, ask them, talk with them and listen to them and record a précis in your files for the class. Makes reporting much easier! #bfc530
No Red Sox this time, but we did see a game after our honeymoon to the Cape 15 years ago. As a @Cubs fan I can still appreciate Fenway for sure 😉 #bfc530
You’re right! My only concern is that no one will give me feedback 😔 So I’m putting it three places - my office door, back of my computer (so people can see during meetings), and a link on my email signature #bfc530
I always ask my Ts to make sure the S is learning. Use multiple methods to assess, not 1 item. Isn't that 1 reason we hate Standardized testing? #bfc530
This will be the first time in a decade that I don't go home to Boston for Christmas, the Parents have decided a Tennessee Christmas is in order. I'll miss it but thrilled not to pack and drive for 2 days w/my dogs. #bfc530

#bfc530 Having a real life conversation with #students is the best way to assess. After that, yes, projects! Allow them some self-expression in sharing what they know and don't know!
Here's the snapshot of what I use as a replacement to traditional report cards. Shift the conversation (parents & students) from grades to growth. Never. Go. Back. @MasteryConnect#growthmindset#bfc530
I second your second! I do a lot of formative checks before giving a summation. The prob with projects/presentations is that Ss see what others are doing & copy, and the presentations take so long! #bfc530
The best assessment beyond tests comes from watching my Ss work in #VRG of 3s, problem solving at their #VNPS; vertical surfaces makes it easy for me to watch multiple groups at once & see progress or if stuck...
#ThinkingClassroom#bfc530
https://t.co/Iqfo7d1QDS. I use it mostly for Reading and Writing. I keep notes on each child. I can also group them and write one note for the whole group. I can keep track of what I told them to work on an refer back. #bfc530
I find that in our quest for deeper level questions (especially DOK3 multiple choice) that we are not making them think deeper but rather just confusing the kids. #bfc530
Indeed! The BEST assessment is authentic, when Ss are demonstrating to an audience what they have learned & how they are making real-world connections through the projects they do. #pbl#bfc530
I love it too and am finding new ways to cook (aka instant pot), and new foods. Think I will stick with it with some minor adjustments. #bfc530#Whole30
We had the same problem so we started making project choice open-ended. Impossible to copy if you're doing something unique. (plus the presentations are more interesting) #bfc530

I'm reading loud & clear that there is no 'best' way to assess. Depends on Ss, subject, topic, standard, choice, style. Powers that be, are you listening? #bfc530
I always ask my Ts to make sure the S is learning. Use multiple methods to assess, not 1 item. Isn't that 1 reason we hate Standardized testing? #bfc530
Have a great day everyone! Go make a positive difference in someone's life today...just because it is Tuesday and you never know how much it will matter. #bfc530
I used to teach in a community where most students were immigrants so we did this with their own families. So amazing! Enjoy the products! Using Student Narratives to Build Community https://t.co/FPZoq0ZoQp via @educationweek#bfc530
Edward De Bono in a TV commercial in Australia asked: How can we find the height of that 7 story building.Answers=Use Algebra, Drop a ball from the roof & time rate of descent, get plans from Council or just ask the Architect! Let Ss be the Architect of their learning! #bfc530

#bfc530 Thanks!
So many ways. Diagnostic assessment for understanding, exit tickets, just conversations, reviewing work, Q & A during and outside class .. lot of them can indicate how a kid is doing with a certain part of the subject.

In fact I think a formal test is the least reliable indicator since kids are known to rote learn things in advance. Not really long term learning IMO. #bfc530

Make it a beautiful day! Glad I made myself lay off the snooze button this morning. This chat will keep me thinking about different ways to assess. #lovetolearn Thank you #bfc530
I loved confer. This is very similar. I got the notes one. There is also one that you can keep track of grades. I would watch the videos first. #bfc530https://t.co/Iqfo7d1QDS

Love station work! It also takes the pressure off of doing things quickly! Students can work at their own pace and spend more time on things that they need/want to! #bfc530
Day 23, I think. I’m not really counting the days anymore. I can end next Tues, but I’m gonna keep going except for a few “cheat” days Thanksgiving & the weekend. I’ll start again 11/27 and go until Xmas. #bfc530#whole30

I am generalizing here, and I am all for deeper assessing but DOK3 multiple choice is confusing because of the format, not the level (DOK1 maybe, but not 3). Much better ways of assessing than multiple choice, especially at a higher level. Have to get away from MC tests. #bfc530
That’s true of any thing in the classroom. I always found that the power of stations is that you can have a variety of activities that help multiple learners show mastery. From music to art to analyzing to calculating to charts... #bfc530
I have argued this point for our District/State mandated SS test ... response "Do you want to grade the thousands of expended response questions?" #bfc530 more about convenience than assessment
YES. Through conversation, creation, projects, group dialogue, questioning - all of which are not tests but ARE assessments. We want the evidence students are learner at the desired levels - lets make it engaging and enjoyable as well. #bfc530
Agree. #bfc530 In IB it is sort of a little better since mark schemes require usage of specific terms and expressions. Keeps the students from memorizing much. At least not in the "forget it" format.

#bfc530 I conduct oral tests more often with classes. Get them to break down their solution, explain why certain constructs were used and the purpose of it. I have also caught them plagiarizing code. ^_^ So its a good filter.

Good morning MST! What is it about today's student that is driving us to seek alternate assessment? Do our current methods of assessment truly evaluate retention and application of knowledge or mastery of the testing system? #BFC530
I gagged when my daughter said, "I have to memorize dialogue" for language class tomorrow. Why isn't the approach, "we are learning the language so we can communicate with others in the world?" Why not practice a conversation? Of course, she wanted none of my opinion. #BFC530
Morning, Kathy. I fear your opinion won't be on the test and what doesn't 'count' tends to get discounted. (Of course, harder to count stuff often proves priceless.) #bfc530
Talking to students; conferring w/them, both face-to-face and digitally, about artifacts of their learning. Less assessing of students, more assessing *with* them. Pronouns matter.™ #bfc530
