Run by Iowa educators, #IAedchat is on Twitter the first, second, and third Sundays each month at 8:00pm CST. We have added #IAedchat LIVE to the fourth Sunday of the month at 8:00pm CST. This will take place in Google Hangout on Air. We will share the invitation and link to #IAedchat LIVE each month.
Good evening. Nick, Supt from Montana. I wrote the name @rickwormeli2 on the white board of one of the teachers in my district back in August...Sprinkling some ideas to the right teachers...The name is still there with references of other similar resources/articles. #iaedchat
Fair grading practices- a civil rights issue. Is this moral?
We hear you!! @rickwormeli2
How can we get away from this on standardized tests? #IAedChat
Question for Rick. When thinking of teachers who are traditional in their grading practices, what is the easiest practice for them to change initially towards a more SBG approach? #IAedChat
Brave question from @rickwormeli2
Take that sugary lip service and ask yourself "what would it look like if I actually believed this?" If we say we believe it, match the words with actions! Do it! #iaedchat
Question for @rickwormeli2
How do you feel a T should balance grading equity & fairness w/district & home desire for data? I feel that there are two philosophies that still need to be addressed #iaedchat
We have to make sure the method for assessing understanding is accessible to the student, can't let a learning disability or cognitive/physical/psychological issue get in the way. #iaedchat
As a former supt of 25 years & now a supporter of Ts in promoting CE, reflect on my current conceptions of teaching & learning, assess my current practice, identify areas for improvement & become a better educational decision-maker #IAedChat
I'm not sure there is anything in education I like to learn/talk about more than grading practices. @rickwormeli2 and @tguskey are two of the best! #iaedchat

I totally agree with @rickwormeli2 that ego can get in the way of change, it is hard to accept that there might be better ways than what we have done but overcoming that is how we get better. #iaedchat
If we don't have those uncomfortable conversations about what really matters in education, nothing will change or get better. Gotta be willing to have those open conversations. #iaedchat
Some of the big things I keep hearing from @rickwormeli2 about how important it is to know what we are measuring, a grade that a student gets should never be a guess and should reflect learning, not just compliance. #iaedchat
Students only invest in what they believe they can do, what they can feel competent at. This is how we motivate students, making sure they believe they can succeed. #iaedchat
Competence should not be left to chance. Kids should have the opportunity to experience this.
Students will invest in what they care about and what think they can do. Authentic motivation doesn't come from a grade book. #iaedchat
"The only person that can motivate himself/herself is that person." We need to stop trying to motivate kids, but meet kids where they are at and help them experience confidence! This means truly differentiate! Wonder what @rickwormeli2 thinks of the work of @burgessdave#IAedChat
I finally learned how to pronounce @rickwormeli2 name! Sounds like "Warmly" Sorry, I have been pronouncing it wrong to many people for about 8 years now : ) #IAedChat
Great mention by @rickwormeli2 about Drive by Daniel Pink - such a great book about motivation and how extrinsic does not matter as much as intrinsic. Autonomy, Mastery, Purpose #iaedchat

I really wish we would spend more time on feedback than we do on grading. Measure only which really matters and make sure it is a good measurement. #iaedchat
Should I report the number of kleenex boxes a student brings in in a separate category or can I just pour on some extra credit? Asking for a friend... #iaedchat

Grade against the standard, not the route you take to get to the standard. @rickwormeli2
Example- reading minutes is not evidence toward a standard. Even so, I fill that calendar out every week so that my child isn't shamed for not getting minutes in. #iaedchat
We hide behind averaging. Let’s not worship the math altar and instead, create a grading scale that has descriptors and evidence. @rickwormeli#IAedChat

"This was done to me, so I’m going to keep doing it to the next generation." We were hired to do hard things. CHANGE your grading practices to be more ETHICAL. @rickwormeli#IAedChat
So much of the discussion tonight reminds me of the famous quote by Maya Angelou “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” #iaedchat
Always inspired when I hear @rickwormeli2 talk education. I was planning to listen for a few minutes then what the football game...but like always when Rick speaks I can't stop listening! #iaedchat
We have the responsibility to give ourselves the TIME to implement the change necessary to make systemic gains in student and teacher performance! Too many times we as leaders have a hard time waiting for real change to take deep root! #IAedChat
Regarding ego again, it is important to not get so down on ourselves when we are not successful, because we can always learn and improve, teaching has no one single answer and that is why I love education and became a teacher. #iaedchat
The term "ethical grading" has a depth that is mine boggling. Is graining something that is dictated by tradition or insight into student success? #iaedchat
"What you value is MORE important than your fear!" Great reminder as the holidays come up when we are with in-laws and potential politically loaded conversations. #IAedChat@rickwormeli2
