#leadupchat focuses on school leadership broadly, culture, changing paradigms, and the growth mindset. It's an Ed movement focused on Leadership, Culture, Growth and Shifts on Saturdays at 8:30am CST, founded by Jeff Veal (@heffrey) and Nathan Lang (@nalang1).
"People like happy places and enjoy being welcomed and having their presence appreciated.” Be The One For Kids. Make sure you create a welcoming environment for kids to learn. #BeTheOne#Tlap#KidsDeserveIt#leadupchat#learnlap
I grew up in Lompoc, Ca. Went to UCSB. Lived in Solvang for many years. Now I'm in Guadalajara, Mexico! Nice to meet someone from my old neck of the woods. #leadupchat
A1: Saying, "Yes, let's work on that together" to ideas unless there is a really good and specific reason for having to say no. Find reasons to say yes! #LeadUpChat
A1: Limitless leadership= practices have been built and capacity is so strong that when the leader moves on to new opportunities, the successful practices remain. They aren’t person oriented, they are culture oriented #leadupchat
A1. I think this looks like changing the way things are done so that folks are continually asking how do we get better and how can we enhance learning and culture to serve our kids. #leadupchat
A1 I hope our legacy is culture of family and kindness, belief in our abilities and the desire to always stretch through innovation, reflection and personal growth. #leadupchat
A1. I'd like to know that even when a teacher leaves our school they have changed because they see that they can make a differene for kids on mutiple platforms through innovative teaching, pushing themselves, and collaborating with colleagues. #leadupchat
A1: Risk-taking!!! Providing staff and students the opportunities to try new things in a safe environment were mistakes are accepted and reflected upon! Trusting in your staff to be the experts in their own rooms.#leadupchat
A1 the leader must focus on school culture & celebrating buy-in. Legacies do not happen around one personality. A lasting legacy is the synergy and collective learning that influences a lasting belief system. #leadupchat
A1- A legacy continues as you may leave, & if the climate & culture of that leader stays, that is a legacy. Your name is remembered as great! Your shoes are hard to fill. The continued spirit lives on way beyond your time there. #leadupchat
A1: A legacy doesn’t have to be an initiative, program, or object. It should be a set of core values, a spirit, wisdom, principles and ideals that can be adapted as situations and circumstances change. #leadupchat
A1: Limitless leaders leave a legacy on the culture, traditions, and practices of a school. The “this is how we do...” statement describes the leader’s nonnegotiables, expectations, communication, what was “allowed,” priorities, and leadership vision. #leadupchat
I agree Dave! Just a few years ago I realized my go-to word was "no" (fear of taking on too much?) So, now I say, "let me think about that. How could you make it happen?" Then if I have to say "no" in the end, at least Ts know I gave the idea serious thought. #leadupchat
A1. Having served as that "leader" for 26 years I became better at it as the decades went by. Administration has also shifted from a dictatorship to amazing teacher leaders who make sure initiatives are sustained over time. #LeadUpChat
A1: Leaving a legacy can seem overwhelming. When in fact, it's simply what we leave unto others, which flows from our daily words and actions that are rooted in our principles and values #LeadUpChat
Good morning y’all! Latoya, checking in from SC where it’s a bit rainy and windy due to #HurricaneFlorerence. Coffee, books, and all kinds of snacks on deck for today. Hoping power stays on for football watching today! #leadupchat
A1) It could look like both Ts&Ss inspired even after that leader is gone; it could be an after-shock of positive change still felt&appreciated by Ts, Ss,&even parents; It could be a legacy so powerful that it ripples out & effects change in other schools & districts. #leadupchat
A1: Legacy=Building a school culture that lives and breathes the mission/vision of the school where systems don’t rely on one single leader to be present in order to achieve that mission/vision. #leadupchat
A1 Ss are so swallowed up by negativity in the world around them, it should be our mission to teach the power of hope for change. #Leadupchat@drneilgupta
A1: Leaving a legacy can seem overwhelming. When in fact, it's simply what we leave unto others, which flows from our daily words and actions that are rooted in our principles and values #LeadUpChat
A1: You leave a legacy in a school by building relationships. Through your words, actions, listening ears, and heart, you show others who you are and what you stand for. Through truly seeing them, listening, and caring, you touch their lives. That lasts forever. #leadupchat
A1. A limitless leader’s impact transcends time and trend, goes beyond an improvement plan, or culture shift. It changes the very way folks think about teaching and learning, it influences their philosophy and beliefs, and many times it changes hearts. #leadupchat
A1: Tracy here Principal from Fayetteville , Ar. I want to leave a legacy of a culture where all staff , families and students are treated with dignity and respect and we do whatever it takes every day to be better tomorrow ! #LeadUpChat
A1: I do think we have to be careful if we focus too much on the idea of legacy. It can turn into something self-serving where we lose focus on the day-to-day interactions that will actually make a long-lasting difference. #LeadUpChat
A1 Leadership Legacy reminds me of when Leonard Bernstein placed his conductor baton down mid-performance and the orchestra continued. He stepped back and the band played on. #LeadUpchat#TheBernsteinEffect
A1 Leadership Legacy reminds me of when Leonard Bernstein placed his conductor baton down mid-performance and the orchestra continued. He stepped back and the band played on. #LeadUpchat#TheBernsteinEffect
I respectfully disagree. I think that if we have a legacy mindset, the foundation of it suggests the person knowing they won't be there forever - it's the opposite of self-serving. #leadupchat
A1: The popular thing is not always the right thing, and legacy leaving leaders are not concerned with what’s popular. They focus on what is best for children. They focus on building capacity within their group, rather than quick fixes that get short term results.
#leadupchat
A1 It means developing capacity and empowering others to continue growing the culture of learning where individuals support, encourage, and strive to improve for the betterment of the school community. #leadupchat
A1 The legacy limitless leaders leave is the culture and philosophy of the school. At least I hope the community spirit and risk taking will live on in school after I'm gone. #leadupchat
A2: Find out team members’ strengths. That person is the expert in the field and helps others rise up. No one can be all things for all people. We must do it together. #leadupchat#laed
A2: By building that culture, one person, one conversation, one interaction at a time. There are no shortcuts to building the trust required to create such an experience, but it's totally worth it! #leadupchat
My point is that I have seen the use of the word "Legacy" become more focused on the person as opposed to an ongoing discipline of impact. When talking about legacy, a leader must also be grounded. #LeadUpChat
A2 We must get to know people and what motivates them (cannot grow the fruit w/o growing the root). Trust then develops where you can give feedback that is valued and impactful. #leadupchat
A2: LOTS of focused, consistent conversations based on the stories of children, along with multiple data sources of academic data to pinpoint how we can support OUR kids. It is a culture of learning for ALL that fosters deep professional connections. #leadupchat
Sending my best to my #LeadUpChat tribe via the soccer fields today! Thankful for the leadership of @drneilgupta and the insight of the edleaders here today! Can't wait to go back and catch up!
Yes! Not as "professional", but I think about the person who can spin plates - they step back and the trick is for them to continue spinning and not fall off... #leadupchat
A2 This is one of the toughest but most important parts of my job I believe. Open conversation based on observations and questions without judgement, followed by support as it is needed. #leadupchat
A2. In our efforts to serve others, we ought to ask that they pass that service on, or pay it forward so to speak. If everyone who receives support it mentoring in turn would support or mentor someone else then goodness would spread! #leadupchat
A2) The goal of any good leader is to create more leaders, not to create followers. This is probably one of my favorite @JohnMaxwellTeam messages. Highly suggest reading, "The 5 Levels of Leadership" and "Developing the Leader In Me."
#leadupchat
A2 Everyone has a story! Limitless leaders learn the stories of their people. They get past the small talk. They know the strengths of those that choose to follow and build capacity from there. They build more leaders by providing opportunities for people to lead. #leadupchat
A1: teachers are held accountable but know it’s so our students are getting their best instruction that us deserved and teachers and admin are moving in the same direction abd ALL know it!!! Plus, Work for all is hard, rewarding, reflective and FUN! #leadupchat
You both have merit. It goes back to your motivation for wanting to leave a legacy. Any of us can be derailed by pride. Love and humility have to drive us. @drneilgupta@dawblack#leadupchat
A2 Create a chain of mentors and mentees , almost like a family tree.
Passing along "family learning" so that wheels aren't reinvented. #Leadupchat@drneilgupta
Agree with this.....leaving behind something of value is made up of so many conversations and small decisions that point to lasting impact. #LeadUpChat
A2: By building that culture, one person, one conversation, one interaction at a time. There are no shortcuts to building the trust required to create such an experience, but it's totally worth it! #leadupchat
Practices become legacy when the originator has empowered others and celebrated them. Rules and mandates change with the wind. The behaviors that have been praised and rewarded will endure. #leadupchat
A1: You leave a legacy in a school by building relationships. Through your words, actions, listening ears, and heart, you show others who you are and what you stand for. Through truly seeing them, listening, and caring, you touch their lives. That lasts forever. #leadupchat
I agree @drneilgupta. None of us will be where we are forever. We should have the mindset that we want to leave a lasting impression on the organization so that the work propels even further when we are gone. #leadupchat
A1: I do think we have to be careful if we focus too much on the idea of legacy. It can turn into something self-serving where we lose focus on the day-to-day interactions that will actually make a long-lasting difference. #LeadUpChat
A2: RELATIONSHIPS. Know them to grow them. You’ve got to truly see every one of your staff members beyond a surface level to seek out their hopes for themselves, their talents and strengths, and for them to believe you when you say “I know you will be GREAT at...” #leadupchat
A1-Leadership inspires and empowers ALL staff members, students, community members, families, etc., no matter the title, to have a role in creating a culture that provides the best experience for each person that walks through the doors.#leadupchat
I believe that a legacy leaving mindset is one of the most selfless acts there is, because the leader is continually looking years into the future to focus on sustainability of best practices for school excellence, and a healthy culture where all can thrive. #leadupchat
A2: Relationships are crucial in every aspect of education. Leaders need to be able provide a culture that celebrates the individual and establishes bonds school-wide. Have meaningful conversations that inspire others to go further.
#leadupchat
A1. A limitless leader’s impact transcends time and trend, goes beyond an improvement plan, or culture shift. It changes the very way folks think about teaching and learning, it influences their philosophy and beliefs, and many times it changes hearts. #leadupchat
A1 They have built a culture of love seen through the building, love for each other, love for learning, love for giving of ourselves. Years down the road the leader will be remembered... how many leaders do WE remember? #LeadUpChat
A2: listen. Strengths-based mentorship. Honest conversations (radical candor when needed @kimballscott). Openness to changes in direction when evidence suggests its best for the Ts and Ss #leadupchat
Love this! I am always intrigued hearing the legacy family tree shared of the people around me and how they are intertwined with mentoring! #leadupchat
A2: Embrace vulnerability. Seek more to understand than to be understood Show gratitude whenever possible Lead with a simple smile so others see you are approachable #loveistheanswer#leadupchat
I think understanding there will be leaders that come after you and making decisions that will help them be successful is good for the school culture. It can be self serving, but it doesn’t have to be #LeadUpChat
A2: First we have to define what we want the "baton" to be. Once those common goals are established, the most effective leaders I know lead through relationships, mentor based on individual needs, and communicate often based on those identified common goals. #LeadUpChat
Practices become legacy when the originator has empowered others and celebrated them. Rules and mandates change with the wind. The behaviors that have been praised and rewarded will endure. #leadupchat
A2. If our mentoring is truly rooted in building an authentic relationship and developing another’s capacity, then we set the example for the person we’re serving in a way that hopefully influences them to do the same. #leadupchat
Agreed. It's not just one thing, but an overall feeling of trust based on lots of smaller interactions that signal that you aren't out to get the other person. #leadupchat
A1: I hope my legacy shows one of support and collaboration, constant development and opportunities for teacher leaders, and the devotion to teachers, students, and school community.#leadupchat
A2: There is so much power in knowing staff members individually and what is happening in classrooms. ASKING them to share and lead creates a culture of sharing and growing together. #leadupchat
A2-They build trusting relationships. Nonjudgmental opportunities to grow and learn. They are willing to invest time into their people to give them the courage and skills to use their own leadership within but with training wheels. #leadupchat
A1: When stakeholders, students, and teachers no matter how long it’s been since they left a school, continue to come back to invest in extending the legacy that pushed them to greatness. This is done through sweat equity, networking, finances, or their presence. #leadupchat
A2b: Be intentional to have those conversations. Find that time to truly listen. Believe that people can grow, and honor the role you play in their growth. Sometimes that means great people have to move on from your school. Don’t make them feel guilty. Empower them. #leadupchat
A2 Take a page from Beatles Producer George Martin and follow a shared vision that is rooted in love. He saw the gifts of The Beatles and helped to nurture their gifts into a lasting legacy of Music. #ThePepperEffect#leadupchat
A2: You build relationships by showing true respect to others. Empower others by creating an environment where they can cultivate their own autonomy & agency. Build genuine dialogue. Dialogue builds trust. And trust opens the door to building true relationships. #leadupchat
A2. Open and trusted communication and collaboration, encouraging critical thinking and creativity at ALL levels! Creating a culture that encourages risk taking celebrating success and learning from failure! #LeadUpChat
I don't disagree. My point is that there is the temptation out there to make the legacy more about the person than about what is left behind. Just want to caution about that because I have seen legacies damaged by self-centeredness. #LeadUpChat
When I consider leaving a legacy, my focus is on creating a culture where individuals seek growth, empower learning, & uplift one another. If done in a way that empowers others to develop the culture, the legacy isn't attached to one particular person necessarily. #leadupchat
A relationship that begins by acknowledging that both parties want to grow and learn mutually fosters, IMO, the best kind of learning. It supports exchange, feedback, and the freedom to make mistakes from which to learn....together. #leadupchat
The word, "mentor" was given to us by Homer. Mentor was Odysseus' friend whom he left to raise his son during the war with Troy. Mentor's job was to prepare his son to take over should he not return.
Mentoring is about preparing people to do it on their own.
#leadupchat
A2- Setting up the ability to collaborate with staff members who are different than you. I think it's important to see the strengths of each staff member and create mentoring opportunities that will help staff members compliment each other, while also challenge. #leadupchat
A2. In thinking about this I've started to think about a chain effect. Some leaders we've cultivated help cultivate other leaders and they form this informal network of support. #leadupchat
Quick favor from the tribe to ask: Please check out my revised and redesigned blog: https://t.co/IxQU2MXOBE
It’s still under construction, but feel free to follow, like, and share!#leadupchat
I don't disagree. My point is that there is the temptation out there to make the legacy more about the person than about what is left behind. Just want to caution about that because I have seen legacies damaged by self-centeredness. #LeadUpChat
I learned from not having the lead teachers being involved in developing the goals and objectives and those objects did fall. It was a "failing forward" journey for me. #LeadUpChat
Relationship building is fundamental but mentoring others to carry the baton is next level! Encourage risk takers & devils advocates. When you find the ones brave enough to speak out for what is right (maybe not popular), push them. Grow them. Encourage them. #LeadUpchat
A2 My belief is by open communication, honesty, support of those in need, recognition of the amazing things your staff does, build a community! Provide opportunities for relationships to be built within your building. #LeadUpChat
Relationships is the bridge for mentoring to be fostered
Talk about data
Create a plan
Execute
Both Ls and Ts need to get up from up under all the paperwork get up from behind their desk stop meeting with Admin and meet with the ones doing the work the Ts & Ss #LeadUpChat
Our Superintendent @TBowers3 shares his 6 Expectations, and "Communicate, Communicate, Communicate" is one of them! I agree communicating often is key! #leadupchat
A2: Intentionality with a sustainable plan. Plan backwards in how to ensure that the relationship mutually meets the needs of those engaged. #leadupchat
A2: Every interaction is a chance to foster relationships.
Be vulnerable. Be humble. Be dialogical. Be curious.
And ultimately, Assume Positive Intent...we all strive to grow from the relationships we cultivate.
#leadupchat
A3. A culture of yes, matters, how can we allow folks to grow and pursue their passions for kids and how can we help them with this. At the same time the strategy and obstacle are the same. Are we taking on too much? #leadupchat
A2. I think we talk about the importance of relationships so much but fail to acknowledge the difficulty in building effective ones. It can be difficult to build a good relationship and an effective one with others-requires trust: hard to develop & easy to lose. #leadupchat
A2: It’s easy to spread yourself too thin trying to mentor everyone to carry the baton. Everyone can carry it, but if we skim the surface, we reach no one. Model with a core leadership group and equip them to turn around and pass that baton to their crew. #leadupchat
A3) I'm sure other people are going to share some profound strategies. Mine is pretty simple...and pretty hard:
Really try to shut up and let other people talk.
#leadupchat
A3: Providing opportunities for teachers, teacher leaders, and other to admin share in PLC. Cautious about placing too many restrictions on what that sharing means. Guidelines are good but don’t need to stifle out of the box thinking. #leadupchat
A3: Things that hinder:
❌Need for control
❌Lack of listening to others
❌Closed off to thoughts of others
❌Lost focus of the WHY
❌Choosing to “fit in”
❌Keeping others comfortable
#leadupchat
A3 Teacher led PD where Tchrs learn from each other; genius hr where they have choice and passion; always provide ways to support and recognize students and staff; Main hinderance is when we forget “it’s about kids”. #leadupchat
A2: This question prompted me to remember a great article I read about the difference between mentoring and sponsoring, and how in building future leadership, we need both. #LeadupChathttps://t.co/6U4FoRt3CA
Brand Your School. Not Yourself.
https://t.co/eLfjIiFWwX
“As we post to social media, with the tap of a few buttons we have opportunities to brand our organizations, influence public perception, and serve...Let’s keep the focus where it belongs.”
#satchat#leadupchat#edchat
A3 Trust and support for new ideas as well as celebration of even baby steps in growth can help teachers feel empowered. Someone looking over your shoulder constantly creating a feeling of distrust will not. #leadupchat
Amazing, Lis! My mind is already spinning in the need for leaders to not just have a legacy mindset but one that created a shared legacy mindset with others! #leadupchat
A3. Once in a while I wonder if I am the hindrance. I want to see people grow but I have come to see that a laserlike focus on what we do as a school benefits all our students #leadupchat
A3: Pride~when a leader believes they have all the answers can get in the way of empowering others to seek new answers and hinder growth. Leaders need to "lead and let lead". Give others the trust and support they need.
#leadupchat
A2: Leadership is naturally a mentoring role. We work closely with teachers, and help them develop a vision that will continue to grow and thrive long after we’re gone! #leadupchat
A3: See things in people they may not, cannot, hope to, or are afraid to imagine in themselves. Make them believe they can. Limitless leaders see no limits in others. Be positive, encouraging, and a confidence & competencies coach! #leadupchat
Q3 we must know where we are right and loose. The organizational values must be tight while the innovation to achieve can be held more loosely. That combination of push/pull helps us grow & achieve. #leadupchat
A1: When leaving a legacy, tou can see it in the way the people act & interact. But more importantly, you can FEEL it through their passion and their drive. #leadupchat
A3: Pride~when a leader believes they have all the answers, it can get in the way of empowering others to seek new answers and hinder their growth. Leaders need to "lead and let lead". Give others the trust and support they need.
#leadupchat
Things that enhance:
✔️Focused conversations
✔️Constantly revisit the WHY
✔️Wear strengths goggles
✔️Courage to speak out
✔️Avoiding quick fixes
✔️Honor the learning curve
#leadupchat
A3: empowerment: give future leaders tough and important challenges to conquer. Mentor them through the productive struggle and reflect with them on their experience. Be willing to pass on projects to future leaders to aid their learning #leadupchat
I see it as an overt chance to stay connected regardless of change. We had a Principal leave our district to another one and called for help. Without hesitation, I will continue to help him even if he is somewhere else! #leadupchat
A3. We empower others when we ask them the right questions and create the write structure to promote solution thinking & then give them the freedom to act. A clear sign of a lack of empowerment: if someone always ask permission before taking a risk to solve a problem. #leadupchat
To me, that shared aspect is what needs to be present in our language around legacy. That is where the grounding and accountability will take place. See -- a thought it being honed by the #LeadUpChat 😀
A3- I've learned from my leaders that empowering means giving staff the opportunity to take risks, without the fear of failure. Also, giving staff the ability to choose and be original. We need change. We need new. Empowering allows for this! #leadupchat
A2 For someone to carry the baton, they need to be a part of the journey and have shared ownership of the vision. Trust has to be cultivated through authentic relationships. Broken trust = people stepping back from contributing rather than stepping forward. #leadupchat
Empowering others- Helping others see the greatness inside of them, to see their value, and the value of what they can share with others. And then, having the culture where the seed you plant can be nourished, grow, and flourish! #leadupchat
A3: You empower by creating a place where they can cultivate autonomy & pursue passions. You give them opportunities to take risks, get a little messy, & grow. That can't happen in a vacuum of control, but it can flourish in an environment filled w/ trust & agency. #leadupchat
Wow! That's awesome! We definitely have a culture of leaders feeling open to "push back" respectfully for collaboration and making things even better for all of us! It matters! #leadupchat
A3: *Actually* empowering others and letting go. Easier said than done, especially if they don't do things *your way*. Everyone says they want leaders and not followers until they are challenged on something. In that moment a good leader needs to let their ego go. #leadupchat
I’m new to my school/grade level this year. The things that work for my kids are not what they’ve been doing. I will continue to fo my thing that seems to be working. #leadupchat
A3: There are times when the easy answer is to step in and be a fixer and a control freak. That does not result in lasting change or legacy! Walk leaders in your building through options, ideas, and your confidence in them to set things into motion. #leadupchat
Making individuals a priority is huge. Demonstrating that you genuinely care encourages people to go the extra mile. This is priceless in our schools. #leadupchat
A3: Be a GREAT lead Blocker. Remain vigilant of the things that attempt to derail a risk taker who is moved to support a cause/vision. Even if that means checking your own ego. #leadupchat
Sometimes all you have to do to empower a T is to celebrate them. Find the behavior you want to see more of....and praise the person doing it. It really can be that simple! (Now, Admins...you have to get in the classrooms and find what to celebrate!) #leadupchat
A3:Make a habit of asking lots of reflective questions and then create the space/ opportunities to hear people’s answers. Then the magic begins. #leadupchat
Absolutely! It’s emotionally taxing to respond personally and authentically to all you serve. I try too but I still have a long way to go! Even those who are sometimes perceived good at this seem more automated than authentic to me. I’m all about authenticity! #leadupchat
A1: A legacy has everything to do with what people in your building and surrounding community say and pass along due to your interactions. Example, a student in the breakfast line said, “Mrs. Combs is strict, but nice!” 👀 Then gave me a hug. 🤣 I was so encouraged. #LeadUpChat
Amen! That's definitely hard for me! @simonsinek even reminds us to watch our body language and how we respond when we disagree in order to allow for open dialogue! #leadupchat
A3: Be a GREAT lead Blocker. Remain vigilant of the things that attempt to derail a risk taker who is moved to support a cause/vision. Even if that means checking your own ego. #leadupchat
A3: Things that hinder:
❌Need for control
❌Lack of listening to others
❌Closed off to thoughts of others
❌Lost focus of the WHY
❌Choosing to “fit in”
❌Keeping others comfortable
#leadupchat
Not listening to ideas hinders leaders. Having the feeling of no support to try something hinders. Working alongside with leaders to share ideas and work through ways to implement, then try and reflect that inspires. #leadupchat
#LeadUpChat is on fire this morning discussing leadership.
I can't imagine what a better leader I would have been if I would have had chats, like this one, to learn with others!
A3: trusting ppl enough to hand over power/control is empowering. Pushing ppl to not only talk about their ideas but to see them to fruition is empowering. No’s & requiring an idea to be fully developed before you buy in is a hindrance #LeadUpchat
A3: Empower others by making them feel known. Make them feel known by understanding their WHY, which impacts their HOW. Once that's established, collaborate so they can incorporate their passions and skill-set to meet common goals #LeadUpChat
A3: To empower, give them opportunities to struggle; guide them by asking the right questions; don’t tell them what to do; ask tough questions. #leadupchat
What hinders empowerment is celebrating mediocrity or tenure. Don't wait 20 years to reward/acknowledge Ts for merely not getting fired. Reward BEHAVIORS regardless of how long someone has been there. Know what your Ts are doing! #leadupchat
A3 Create a sense of group ownership rather than personal competition and personal gain. We should have a shared vision to lift others up to empower #leadupchat@drneilgupta
The idea of comfort definitely hinders growth. We can't just have cute signs that say "Change is messy", we have to overtly teach how to properly navigate through the change process. #leadupchat
Legacy is the message you leave behind. I would want leaders to leave behind s legacy of empowerment, mindfulness, social emotional wellbeing, community& collaboration which inevitably leads to innovation! #leadupchat
Even though we want to be quick to tell, help or answer questions, allowing others freedom to productively struggle through with a supportive attitude can build confidence & build capacity. #LeadUpChat
A4: For me, this is where it is so important to be clear about the mission and core values of an organization. When that happens it is easy to identify whether something fits within those core values and enhances them or not #LeadUpChat
A3: Believe in them. Show your gratitude for them. Encourage and support, then invite them to take some additional training to sharpen their skills. Leaders can't just rest on our laurels; we must continue to learn to equip and empower. #leadupchat
A3: Give teacher leaders the opportunityto do, without fear of failure. We must let go and allow them to learn and persevere. Empowering teachers to lead, requires admin to model and support, and to help them find success. #leadupchat
A4: I think leaders should prioritize a positive school culture, but also curriculum and instruction. I don't think C&I gets enough focus sometimes! #leadupchat
A2. I think we talk about the importance of relationships so much but fail to acknowledge the difficulty in building effective ones. It can be difficult to build a good relationship and an effective one with others-requires trust: hard to develop & easy to lose. #leadupchat
A3: Empowering Leaders create opportunities for Ps & Ts to lead knowing they may fall short, but prepared to pick them up and equip. Failure can hinder if it isn’t viewed as part of the process of resilience and building capacity! #leadupchat
A3. I’m all about building community right now. It’s relational at its core. If we can create smaller learning communities in our organizations I think we can improve relationships with others and the empowerment they feel. It’s why I started #leadershipwithlatoya#leadupchat
A4: we must have a good rudder. You need to know the learning theory behind your philosophies. That gives power in setting the direction Hold to the theory tightly & allow liberty within putting it to practice. #leadupchat
A4: Having goals. When something comes up, ask yourself « Will this bring me closer to realizing my goals? » If The answer is yes, then do it. If it’s no, drop it. #leadupchat
A4: One goal I have is to focus on one goal at a time, and to not try to do it all--all the time. I cherish my F2F #PLN in my own backyard. They provide mentoring to keep me grounded, prioritized, and healthy. #leadupchat
A3: Give! Give! Give! Pour into others without restraint...and allow others to Give! Give! Give! Leaders can learn too. We can be empowered by those we are empowering. Let those being empowered see their empowering power. ☺️ #LeadUpChat
A4: Decisions should be prioritized based on the overall benefit to ALL students and staff- not just a few. Priority should also be placed on efficiency, overall benefit and establishing postive school culture.
#leadupchat
Sports teams have time to work together every day. I wonder what the impact would be if teachers (others) had quality time to work together on a common goal every day. #leadupchat
In reply to
@drneilgupta, @dawblack, @PrincipalSmart
A4- I think it goes back to the school's "Why", "Mission", and "Vision." We must focus on the things that are going to help us arrive where we want to go! Begin with the end in mind! Are we doing things to get there? #leadupchat
A3: Fostering positive relationships with staff, building unity where all feel comfortable to share their passion for learning. Collaboration is an essential key. #leadupchat
A4. Leaders ... you might want to save this one, add it to your planner and when SO frustrated, pull it out and self-reflect about the priorities in front of you. #LeadUpChat
A4: Start with “Is it best for the kids?”, “ then “What resources do we need & have?”Last & importantly “will we end up on the news or in the superintendent’s office?”Lol #leadupchat
A4 We need to stay focused on our beliefs and mission and and say no to those things that move us from that. Less energy spent on those things we can't control and more on those things we can and believe we should. #leadupchat
A4: Prioritize your daily practice around the following: (in this order)
✅ Is it best for children?
✅Is it in line with our mission?
✅ Will it move us toward our vision?
✅ How does it align with our current goals?
✅ Are we sacrificing anything by taking it on?
#leadupchat
A4: An understanding of the destination and an appreciation of what truly impacts the journey. Those issues/events that demand course corrections easily become the priorities #leadupchat
A4: Learn your school and the people within it. What unique strengths, challenges, etc are in your school? What do your students need to be successful? What do teachers and support staff need to help students be successful? Everything starts there. #leadupchat
A4: To be painfully honest, I found it very hard to say NO, especially as new ideas and initiatives promised to energize and engage.
So I chose Covey's wisdom, to begin with the end in mind. It helps a lot to ask how the end will have grown us and made us better. #leadupchat
A4. Leaders ... you might want to save this one, add it to your planner and when SO frustrated, pull it out and self-reflect about the priorities in front of you. #LeadUpChat
A4. Leaders ... you might want to save this one, add it to your planner and when SO frustrated, pull it out and self-reflect about the priorities in front of you. #LeadUpChat
A4: To help prioritize all that needs to be done, we run new initiatives through these questions:
1) Does it align with our mission?
2) How much resources will it take?
3) How much risk is involved?
4) How much time will it take?
#LeadUpChat
A4. @bethhill2829 is certainly correct in holding the priority of 'children first' in our decisions. I kept these front and center on my desk (or table after I tossed the desk) for decades. #LeadUpChat
A4. Leaders ... you might want to save this one, add it to your planner and when SO frustrated, pull it out and self-reflect about the priorities in front of you. #LeadUpChat
Know your vision and goals, if it is helpful, do it, if not forget it. You must know the direction you are trying to go, and stay focused on that! #leadupchat
A4: Prioritize your daily practice around the following: (in this order)
✅ Is it best for children?
✅Is it in line with our mission?
✅ Will it move us toward our vision?
✅ How does it align with our current goals?
✅ Are we sacrificing anything by taking it on?
#leadupchat
Well-said. And the people to whom trust is bestowed have an equal responsibility to do their part proactively. If both sides don't hold up their end of the bargain, macro trust starts leaning micro, leadership becomes management, and opportunities become obligations. #leadupchat
A4) Balancing the urgent v the important is one of the greatest challenges of a school leader. We don’t always have the resources to delegate the urgent. #Leadupchat
I wonder if sometimes people don't give because they don't feel empowered to do so...learned helplessness. If they don't experience joy in giving, then... #leadupchat
A4: Are the things presented major rivers or tributaries in the development/support of the MAIN thing? If it’s a tributary it gets a different response than if the issue is a major river. #leadupchat
A3: You empower by creating a place where they can cultivate autonomy & pursue passions. You give them opportunities to take risks, get a little messy, & grow. That can't happen in a vacuum of control, but it can flourish in an environment filled w/ trust & agency. #leadupchat
A4: Urgent and pressing matters encourage priority. On the other hand, a matter may not present itself as urgent at the time, but may need immediate intervention before it becomes a priority. #LeadUpChat
A4. It has to benefit our students and grant them opportunity they would never have otherwise. It has to enable our students to reach the highest level of success possible. Ideally this directly reflects where the entire faculty stands as well
#leadupchat
A4: you must know your vision, and ask yourselfhow will this move us forward toward our vision and goals. If it aligns go for it, if not hold off on it. #leadupchat
Wow! That's awesome! We definitely have a culture of leaders feeling open to "push back" respectfully for collaboration and making things even better for all of us! It matters! #leadupchat
Another strategy I have found helpful is giving myself permission to say no by thinking: I am saying no to this so that I can say yes to _______. #leadupchat
A4: To be painfully honest, I found it very hard to say NO, especially as new ideas and initiatives promised to energize and engage.

A4:leadership can’t b just @ putting out fires. Bc not all flames r bad 😬🔥Controlled burning. What flames r we stoking? We need to mobilize and vocalize what’s truly important, what WE value( shared vision). Are we expending our time & energy where it counts? #leadupchat
I'm in a new school and Ts have PLC almost every day. As a new coach, I'm curious to see the impact that it has on kids' learning. So much potential! #leadupchat

One of things I am really listening to is when a culture doesn’t allow for the humanity of all, I can understand why some might double down on self care, taking more than they give. I know folx who reserve their energy for their students only #leadupchat

A2: Build confidence in team/staff thru valuable experiences, collaboration & constant mentoring. Build opportunities to lead w feedback & a capacity to know the right thing to do, what to do, even when you are not around...Succession planning #leadupchat
A4: Decisions should be prioritized based on the overall benefit to ALL students and staff- not just a few. Priority should also be placed on efficiency, overall benefit and establishing postive school culture.
#leadupchat
A4. Prioritizing is about quality, efficiency, and effectiveness. Leaders model this by not becoming obsessed with quantity- how much folks are doing instead of focusing on what they are doing and if it is working. What matters should be what you monitor. #leadupchat
A5 I think the behavior that has the most impact in our school community is walking my talk. I need struggle and celebrate our wins right along with everyone else. #leadupchat
A5. Always model positivity, kindness, innovation, risk taking, growth over status quo and empowering others to lead. Make it about kids - every day and every decision. #leadupchat
A5: valuing dissent. It creates trust and open doors for feedback of any type. Validating others instead of defending my intentions and ego #leadupchat
That’s phenomenal, Sandy! Can’t wait to hear about the journey! It’s wonderful you have PLCs and coaching in our schools. I’m excited to hear about the shifts and impact on learning. #leadupchat

For some that may be true...but in the end if we love ourselves we extend that grace and mercy to ourselves if we need to do so...and usually...almost always...everything turns out ok. #leadupchat
A5- Understand that CALM is needed. If we want calm behaviors, we must model them. Model nurturing, understanding, kind, and genuine behaviors. Students, staff, and parents won't want to work with someone, unless they see you are seeking to understand them. #leadupchat
A5: I aspire to be like my mentors who displayed: sincere humility, genuine belief in others, strong vision, consistent teachability, and above all, a love to work and learn alongside students, staff, and families. #LeadUpChat
A4: Being intentional about the main FOCUS & PRIORITIZATION in my opinion is one of the MOST important parts of limitless leadership because TIME is such a obstacle to accomplishing great things! #Leadupchat
A4: First things first, is it beneficial for the kids? if not, how can we adapt to make it beneficial. We must always prioritize based on what is best practice for kids, then how will we see that teachers are implementing these practices without feeling overwhelmed. #leadupchat
A3: There are times when the easy answer is to step in and be a fixer and a control freak. That does not result in lasting change or legacy! Walk leaders in your building through options, ideas, and your confidence in them to set things into motion. #leadupchat
Right. It takes little energy to get out of the way and let others put in the work. I am always confused by leaders who say no to something that their folx would spend a lot of energy on making sure it was successful #leadupchat
A4: Similiar to the urgent/important matrix shared earlier, leaders can use the impact/feasibility matrix to prioritize decisions. Low impact? Say no. High impact/high feasibility? Say yes now! High impact/low feasibility? Make a plan for effective implementation. #leadupchat
A5: habits take practice & persistence. We must quiet outsise noise but more importantly, our own mental noise to b responsive to ourselves & school community. Behaviors such as patience, first seeking 2 understand, empathy, decisions 4 the greater good! #leadupchat#leadupchat
A5 To really be a LL you must be real: prioritizing time, empathy, consistency, & personal response. Just like with students, our teams must know we care. #RelationshipsMatter#leadupchat
Demonstrate a balance of humility + confidence. Be inclusive of who you solicit ideas from. Be vulnerable + share your growth. Ask for feedback. When you move..know why..and be able to articulate it. Finally: face-to-face/heart-to-heart. #leadupchat
A5: SOLER skills aren't just for our kiddos! Inviting staff and stakeholders in and asking, "Tell me more." leads to a beautiful path to understanding.
Think #empathy#compassion#kindness (head, heart, hands) as you mindfully step into their stories. #leadupchat
A5: It should be evident that we treat others with respect & truly SEE them. Do we actively listen when others are speaking? Do we make eye contact? Do we honor others' opinions, even if they differ from our own? Showing respect leads to strong relationships. #leadupchat
A5: Patience when mistakes are made or success doesn’t happen the 1st time. Gratitude when ppl try & step out of their comfort zones. Consistency in pursuing difficult goals!#leadupchat
A5: Never ask anyone to do anything that you aren’t willing to do yourself. Then make sure people see that you mean it, through your thoughts, words and actions #leadupchat
A5-Behaviors of love, passion, friendliness, inspiration and many more to show everyone that you are their to serve, not to be served. You have their best interest in mind for the children's sake. #leadupchat
A4. Being a learner, compassionate, expressing the joy that every child is amazing and has great talents we know or will discover. Always seeking to grow, improve, learn. We need to share how much we love our work to bring the next generation into this work. #leadupchat
A5: Perseverance, collaboration, and a willingness to listen and learn. None of us are perfect, but it is how we handle setbacks, and reflect on feedback, that allows us to grow and succeed. #bethedifference#Leadupchat
And helping with simple things that seem unimportant at the time can have a huge effect size I guess maybe that's where being motivated by love can help discern when-what. #leadupchat
We're just getting started but at the least, meeting each day helps to keep ppl focused on the work. There never seems to be enough time. We could talk, plan, assess, analyze just literacy skills every day. But we need to also do the same for math, science, other too #leadupchat

A5: Behaviors that should be visible to students, staff, and parents are: commitment (to student achievement and wellbeing), trustworthiness, friendliness, stamina, and continuous growth. #LeadUpChat
A3: empowering others means you trust them to do their best! Rested opportunities for others to lead, start with their strengths and he prepared to help if needed! Positive feedback is critical so they will continued to take risks! Unleash talent!!! #legacymatters#leadupchat
A5: Passion, enthusiasm, grace, appreciation, honesty, kindness, vulnerability, assume positive intentions - we are all a work in progress and every day is a new opportunity for growth and greatness. #leadupchat
A3:Make a habit of asking lots of reflective questions and then create the space/ opportunities to hear people’s answers. Then the magic begins. #leadupchat
A5: Respect for all stakeholders, Confidence in the possibilities for greatness, Passion for the craft of education and the betterment of others #leadupchat
A5: I was really impacted by a book I read recently. I want these 3 behaviors to be visible to anyone with whom I interact: Be humble, Stay hungry, Always hustle. #leadupchat
Face-to-face, heart-to-heart conversations matter. Don't email everyone with a general rule/observation when you really just mean 1 or 2 people. That's cowardly.
There are no hard conversations when you've done the necessary work of building relationships.
#leadupchat
A5: Stepping out of our comfort cocoons to model what we want for our climate of caring really helps others feel safe following suit.
The grass skirt and ukulele are optional, but they add a musical element of playfulness and fun.
#leadupchat
I'm excited to document growth! I feel so much responsibility on my shoulders! There are sooo many new teachers in our building that need support. #leadupchat

I really like that, @marcihouseman. This will help make prioritizing a more positive practice, saying yes to other things, not just saying no to one thing. #leadupchat
A6. I think of students currently at school, my own children, and some amazing students and families that I currently work with now and in the past and I think is this good enough for them. #leadupchat
So true! Being a multiplier means being aware of those times when we have a tendency to be an accidental diminisher. To build capacity we must provide others with the opportunity to learn and grow—even if something is done “differently” than we would have done it. #leadupchat
A6 - There is no finish line actually. It’s more of a march than a race. Education is a mission. Hurdles are part of the package and help you learn and grow as a person, as a leader and as an educator. Fall, learn, get up, march on. #leadupchat
A5. Limitless leaders Walk the Walk - ALWAYS. Available, visible, hands on,in the work (arrival, lunch, dismissal, passing periods)patient, understanding, firm yet positively supportive, doesn’t engage in gossip, communicates #leadupchat

A6 I am not in admin, but in the classroom we have numerous trials as well. I overcome them by being thankful for and focusing on the positive and many times just PRAYER!! #LeadUpChat
A6- I always go back to my personal mission in life. I am here to serve, encourage, connect, and help people. When I lose sight of that, I lose sight of everything meaningful. Reflection and mindfulness get me back! #leadupchat
A6: I know I said it earlier, but it's the kids that keep me focused. When it comes to overcoming trials, my faith and trust in God gives me peace and strength. 🌟 https://t.co/u4aSQQEJz5#leadupchat
A6: Most trials cannot be fixed through educational pedagogy or processes. I have a relationship with Jesus Christ. Reading the Holy Bible, praying, & going to church help me persevere and overcome trials I encounter as a leader. That’s vital! #LeadUpChat
A6: Hope. Careers in education are hard, so understanding why we are here and why we are doing this keeps me going. Hope for a better tomorrow will forever be what keeps me focused, driven and helps me overcome even the most difficult trials.
#leadupchat
A6- The desire to improve, to become better and achieve more. Perseverance only comes if you have a true desire. Trials happen, these are limitless, but your response to them can also be limitless. NEVER GIVE UP!!!!! #leadupchat
A6. I acknowledge that there is no finish, only occasional pauses to rest and recharge. I also commit to serve public education for all the days of my life...for the children. #leadupchat
#leadupchat so something I’m reflecting on. How we as leaders navigate “those questions” where we assume they are “gotcha” questions says a lot about our values. If we embrace those questions, what does that speak to the room? If we get defensive, what do we teach? #leadupchat
A6: Trials are attacked, neutralized and resolved, not overcome. There will always be another one to take its place. Stay focused on the mission. #leadupchat
A6: When you start feeling things going awry, losing focus, and persevering thru trials, always RE-center focus on the overall mission: It's not about me. It's not about you. We're here for the kids and to facilitate meaningful learning experiences for them. #leadupchat
A6: For me, making time for reflection is certainly important, but I cannot do this well without seeking out God's wisdom through His Word and prayer. #LeadUpChat
A6 Staying grounded in your purpose and in your self. Always reaching for the stars but not letting yourself become blinded by the light. #Leadupchat@drneilgupta
A6: It is hard - but blocking out the noise that is not productive to our work, and focusing on the conversations about S and T growth and goals. Bringing focus to the important work with OUR KIDS. #leadupchat
Before #leadupchat ends, be sure to stay connected to the educators who have affirmed, inspired, and/or challenged you this morning! Follow.....and follow-for-follow!
Wide your circle!
Taking some time today to hang out with a good friend, but so glad to hang out with all #leadupchat friends before I took off. Have a wonderful Saturday everyone!
A6: The challenges of education are ever changing. Limitless leaders constantly adapt and realign goals. We cross finish lines, but there will always be a new race to run! #leadupchat
