A1 Very positive. SPMG books in primary school. Went through them at my own pace + investigations. I loved maths - still do. At college I found one teacher wouldn't answer my questions about 'why...?' that was a negative, didn't do well at A level maths the 1st time! #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat A1. I had a really positive experience with maths. But I only remember taking part in maths during “maths time”, I don’t recall (or wasn’t aware perhaps) of taking part in maths across the curriculum 🤷🏻♀️
#UKEdChat A1 Lots and lots of questions to be completed in primary school. More interesting problems at O-level. A-level - teacher announced that they wouldn't be teaching certain topics - too hard (for them)!! Dad loved mental maths so lots of competitions at home.
#UKEdChat Q2
How would you explain to pupils why is it important to learn maths? Are you a maths role-model for your pupils?
Pls use the hashtag & A2...
A2 I went to an ATM branch meeting where the presenter talked about people's stereotypes of maths teachers i.e.old man, beard etc. I asked my class to draw what they thought a mathematician looked like. Half drew me, the others drew themselves or another adult they know. #UKEdChat
A2 using maths in the real world allows the pupils to see its worth. Additionally (see the pun there!) using money always shows them how maths can be essential #ukedchat
#UKEdChat Q2 again

#UKEdChat A2. I explain to pupils that learning maths and maths skills is important because we all need the skills to function in the world! 🌎 Without learning them we couldn’t buy clothes, bake a cake or get anywhere on time!
#UKEdChat A1 I was able at maths (level 8 in year 9 and A at GCSE) but teachers repeatedly told me I wasn't skilled in maths so not so consider a career in science
A2 I've asked the question 'is maths important?' to children in pupil interviews as part of monitoring maths. They know it will help with money, measuring, DIY, cooking, planning travel, organising holidays... vital life skills. #UKEdChat
#UkEdChat A2 There is the need to be numerate and be able to estimate in practical situations involving money/measurements but the curriculum also focuses on problem-solving and reasoning which involve developing resilience, being logical, trying different approaches...
#UKEdChat I really enjoyed maths at primary but hated it at secondary. Struggled with confidence and working independently; needed lots of reassurance from teacher A1
#UKEdChat a2 I use real life...even a builder has to read a plan/make quotes/buy material. Maths is all around and you can escape it. Think how hard a world would be without the skill to read...it is on par with that!
#Ukedchat A3 Science is an obvious cross over & Geography I think. There are very clear cross curric links too with the vocabulary for questions with English too 🤔
#UKEdChat Real world examples to justify why maths is important - mortgages, finance, money, time, fractions, percentages, critical thinking, strategy & data!Make it relevant. A2
A2 - explaining checking wages are correct, being able to count out money, balancing wages are all things we may have to do - is necessary in life. Not really a maths role model, although we do try and use maths skills in History #ukedchat
A3 I find statistics (data handling) is naturally part of science. Chn can use what they have learnt in maths to draw a table, collect data and draw a graph. It makes everything so visual. Measuring skills + using timers also come into science, D&T and PE. #UKEdChat
A1 My experience of maths growing up wasn't a very positive one, with that in mind I always aim to support those that are finding something tricky as well as think of interesting a ways linked to real life to deliver a skill. #UKEdChat
A2 I always aim to link maths skills to real life situations, where possible, to something the children are passionate about. This helps them engage more in the activity as well as see its worth. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat A3 PE - athletics and warm-ups year round. Also create symmetrical images/particular shapes in gymnastics. Art - looking at paintings and using scale to create a real life model of an object within the painting. Science - graphs/measurements/tables. LOGO in ICT.
A1 didn’t like maths at O level - Lessons were boring. A level was interesting but tough. Then I got an awesome tutor and suddenly the art in maths appeared... #ukedchat
No of course not 😂🙄however, I didn’t understand what a mortgage was when playing monopoly as a kid... students still comment about the lack of real world maths even at KS4 #UKEdChat A2
Having taught maths and science, it feels like maths is doing lots and lots of sums, and maths in science is application. That’s perhaps why kids don’t link topics in those two subjects. #ukedchat
#UKEdChat A4. I can find it quite tricky to include numeracy in English and Welsh lessons. I think it’s because we’re often trying so hard to focus on teaching a literacy skill during these lessons that it’s hard to focus on two different (and such varying) skills sometimes.
#UKEdChat A4 History isn’t. In fact, humanities isn’t at all. We’re really lucky to be able to use data, statistics, chronology & sequencing, critical thinking & problem solving. Would be interested in how the Arts use maths?
#UKEdChat
A3 Science! In Science, we are measuring and converting measurements. We are handling data. We are creating and interpreting graphs!
Science requires children to make deductions and problem-solve. Those skills are relevant in maths too.
A1: Maths was my weak point due to the introduction of the NC at primary and the mass rollout of calculators (times tables/mental arith are key to so much). As such was dissuaded from becoming an interior designer due to poor mathematical abilities #ukedchat
Geography with surveys, questionnaires, can you do areas with sphere of influence?? And use proportionality and stats to prove hypothesis and science for Speed, dist time and line of best fit... etc #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat
Maths is about the problem solving, noticing the pattern, applying and adapting previously learnt skills to different circumstances... A life skill.
#UKEdChat Q2 again
How would you explain to pupils why is it important to learn maths? Are you a maths role-model for your pupils?
Pls use the hashtag & A2...
#UKEdChat A1 completing utterly pointless coursework on the Golden Ratio in the early 90’s , building on filling in boring workbooks at primary school in the 1980’s
A2: once taught Application of Number to FE students related to the buying of a car from the initial cost of purchase to considering running costs. The fact that they had to work out local petrol prices and the mpg of the car they had chosen really opened their eyes! #ukedchat
#ukedchat
A2 I think children need situations where they are using maths on a daily basis. Situations need to be relevant and exciting, so children feel more motivated to learn maths and use it confidently!
#UKEdChat Q5 again
Where do/would you get extra maths support from if you need it? What maths CPD have you had, or do you want?
Pls use the hashtag & A5...
A4 I think you can put elements of maths in other subject areas e.g. learning numbers in French, mixing colours in art (thinking about ratio), timelines in history, looking at length of rivers / distances between places in geography... Perhaps RE maybe a bit tricky. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat A4 English. Have used poetry/raps (kids create) to remember characteristics of types of number for example but links can be tenuous - we created potions using proportions when studying Macbeth - they loved it but didn't help them understand Macbeth any better :)
A4: When planning I often think English however sometimes I find that I'm having to explain how to produce graphs to exemplify rising/falling tension in an extract or showing how no. of syllables in iambic parameter is worked out and suddenly maths/numeracy is there! #ukedchat
A5 As maths subject leader I've been lucky to participate in lots of CPD that I've chosen to do. The NCETM self evaluation tool for subject knowledge and pedagogy is good. Regular maths network meetings and ATM/MA branch meetings are useful. #UKEdChat
#UKEdChat Q6 again
How can all teachers help excite pupils about maths, especially those who have been turned off in the past?
Pls use the hashtag & A6...
A6 I asked newer teachers (2 years ago) what areas of maths they wanted CPD for as they expressed feeling negative about maths when they were at secondary school. I organised monthly drop in CPD sessions which were hands on and they were well attended by those teachers. #UKEdChat
It meant that their confidence increased as well as their subject knowledge and understanding of progression in maths. Two of the teachers actually said that they enjoyed teaching maths more than they had previously. #UKEdChat
A5: As an English teacher forced to teach 2 terms of App of Number I turned to Google/Youtube to brush up/learn certain maths calculations/formulas. Once I understood it, I then taught it! Bloody hard work and no opps to check if the internet was correct! #ukedchat
#UKEdChat A5 We used to occasionally use Babcock although I would undertake training as Maths lead. Maths Hubs seem to be very active in training. However, most effective CPD imo is working with staff so carrying out lesson study for example, or other class-based research.
A5: At FE in Wales the students have WEST. I wish us teachers had it too. To check our abilities but also to take part in online learning in our own time to improve our skills or brush up on those we may have forgotten! Controversial however! #ukedchat
#ukedchat A6 my colleague sent me this link to an homage to a well known timed number game. Works a treat in mentor time and allows for discussion about core maths knowledge https://t.co/A8d10bj8Gl
#UKEdChat Q7 again
Describe a great lesson where you integrated maths and another subject, or a future lesson you could do.
Pls use the hashtag & A7...
#UKEdChat A6. Last week I gave my pupils a @twinklresources mystery maths activity. They have asked for a “murder mystery” every single day since. Even the children who usually hate maths lessons. I think by making maths fun and not “textbook lessons” you can excite pupils!
#UKEdChat A6 Allow teachers to express that they may themselves be lacking in confidence in maths and ensure that they are supported with this without judgement. Primary PGCE covers a lot of subjects and many participants may have last studied maths at GCSE.
A7 In science when learning about keeping things warm/cold we had an investigation where scientists found some 'dinosaur blood!' (red food colouring) in ice and needed to keep it cold. It involved measuring temperature, using a timer and deciding how to record results. #UKEdChat
A8 Talk about maths in real-life e.g. timings of things, how long until a trip for eg, talk about budgets and make sure chn know value of things so they take care of them (no missing glue stick lids in my class!), teach the chn to cook... #UKEdChat
