Was the 2018 pay raise sufficient to make up for a decade of nothing? Nope! The Top 10 States in Education pay a competitive wage that helps recruit and retain educators. Stay tuned: full report coming next week! #OklaEd#RoadMaptoTop10
I want to recognize my Grandads:
Scotty Haselwood - Naval Academy and served in the North Atlantic
Major Robert Marshall Singleton - Served in the Pacific and is a survivor of the Battle of Leyte in the Philippines.
#OklaEd#VeteransDay
#oklaed Hello everyone! My name is @JoMabeeLein and I am the ED of TLI. I would like to honor my grandfather who served in WWII and my father-in-law who served in the Air Force.
Debbie Thoreson, P of 3rd grader, T of English 3 & AP, Dewey High School, #oklaed Most of my veterans are no longer with us, but my brother-in-law, Jace, served a few years back!
Missy Berry. Granite Public School. 4th, 5th and 6th Math teacher. Mom of 3. Wife of 1. College student again. 🤣 Recognize my Dad. Vietnam Vet. Navy. ❤️#oklaed
Tyler Bridges, @k20center Associate Director, super-occasional tweeter, and #oklaed follower.
Both my grandfathers fought in WWII (Army/Navy), with one earning a #PurpleHeart after storming the beach in Normandy. Great men.
Jola, kindergarten, mid-del. Tweeting on the go tonight, but honoring my brother, a veteran Marine, and all who have served, on this Veteran's Day #oklaed
Jack Reed, Principal of Emerson North High School in @OKCPS and I honor and thank all fellow Veterans for their service and especially my brother. #OklaEd
A1) I would define Teacher Action Research as the compiling of research data within the teacher's course of performing his/her duty as an educator. It brings realtime and relevant data to the research. #oklaed
A1: I've never heard the term before, but it sounds like National Board Certification! It's all about becoming better by researching what's been done before and what you do - then finding ways for improvement. #oklaed
A1) First, I am not an administrator, but this subject will give a an insight to improve. TAR would help me reconsider some of my teaching methods. I heard about this a couple of weeks ago. #oklaed
A1 Teacher Action Research is research with the intent of improving instructional practice. Finding an area of perceived weakness and digging into or conducting research on the topic for the sake of improvement #oklaed
Enjoy talking about action research. Something we should do more as Ts. Will catch up with you next week. Brushing up on my understanding of integrals right now. 😘 #oklaed
John Michael Montgomery, State Rep turned Senator this week, checking in for #OklaEd chat. For recognition: my brother before a recent deployment. He just made sergeant!
#oklaed A1) This is a great image to describe action research. In so many words, action research is about testing a specific instructional practice and determining effect by looking at the academic achievement.
A1) Teacher action research is a continual adjustment to teaching so that learning continues to improve in the classroom. No fear for risk-taking because it moves us forward. #oklaed
A2 - I want to get better at implementing design thinking into my practice. My Ss are learning so much in their current design project & I want to find more ways to do this well. #oklaed
A2: I am currently trying to find more effective grading techniques - as in not so time intensive! I'm interested because I spend too much time grading and providing feedback that is ignored. But changes are already making a difference... #oklaed
BTW - open invite to any #okleg members who want to come to my school to hear my Ss redesign of high school! They have come up with ways to improve school...I invited the PC area reps, but anyone can come! Nov. 27th at 10am! Let me know! #OklaEd
A2 -
1. formative assessment as feedback for students.
2. focusing more on informing students how memory works and how we learn.
3. making my students critical consumers of information.
#oklaed
A2 Now that we have 2:1 iPads in K-2...true authentic tech integration...finding new and better ways to reach all children and honor their individual needs and voice. #Oklaed
A2: I am constantly seeking new ideas for not just activities for my classroom but also practiced that increase student learning. I take advantage of every PD opportunity and enter with an open mind ready to improve, even after 25 years of teaching. #OklaEd
A2 Customer service-Am I and is my team meeting the needs of our customers the Ts and subsequently the Ss in the school. What areas are we weak in individually and as a team. #oklaed
A1b) Shared this article as part of my last faculty meeting. Always share an article for a flipped lesson portion of the meeting. #oklaedhttps://t.co/JG1kxmomyH
A2. My classroom, would be the classroom of leadership. I am always conversing with colleagues & discussing ways to improve. As well as attending things & reading. Trauma Informed Instruction is on my mind. We should always be in a growth mindset. #oklaed
A2 #oklaed I want to collect perception data from teachers and principals on how they know learning has occurred in classrooms - other than just grades.
A2: with my student-centered and led classroom, I am interested in learning techniques that encourage them to go all in while promoting peer group instruction. I want my Ss to take the lead while I serve as a guide. #oklaed
A2) I would want to have a deeper dive into the relationship between real learning and standards based assessments. This is an interest because I know our students know much more than what a test can show, so how do we show the real learning everyday? #oklaed
More A2: I am currently working on implement ideas from attending the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Regional Conference in Kansas City a week ago!! #OklaEd
A2) how to make my classroom a place of empowerment for my students- @gjladson’s culturally relevant pedagogy is central for both my k-12 students and the preservice teachers I work with #oklaed
Shouldn’t be, but the basic and most important criteria for research is its non-biased validity. “Figures lie and liars figure” isn’t a saying for nothing. #oklaed
A-2 I have been thinking about some things for several years and spent some time this summer becoming more organized about recording certain observations and student growth. I find if I make sure I record it daily, it is much more meaningful. I share this with others. #oklaed
A2: definitely social emotional learning. Helping my students be good people. Regardless of the grades they make, I want them to leave me being a better person. #oklaed
A2: #OklaEd applying to my MS counseling office-I am interested in continuing to adjust my trauma-informed approaches to Ss & learning how to better interact with parents on these issues.
A3: My problem is that I feel like I need to read every word my students write (except what they ask me not to in their journals). I know there are other schools of thought, but I feel guilty if I don't read them all. #oklaed
#oklaed A2) One of the big things that we focus on in TLI is creating a culture where kids cannot be passive. No opt out, cold call, and everybody writes are some of the strategies.
A2: definitely social emotional learning. Helping my students be good people. Regardless of the grades they make, I want them to leave me being a better person. #oklaed
A3) Internships and business connections can help Ss build the skills necessary to be successful in many of the careers that are prevalent and trending right now. 17 of 20 top jobs don't require a college degree. #oklaed
This is why I have students share with each other after their daily quickwrite. Someone gets to hear what they have written, so it wasn't done in vain. #OklaEd
A2: definitely social emotional learning. Helping my students be good people. Regardless of the grades they make, I want them to leave me being a better person. #oklaed
A3) Lack of student representation in the curriculum, colorblindness, deficit mindsets of students and parents, lack of student-centered instruction, and learning without the context of culture #oklaed
A3. I need strategies to deflate the tension in the room. I feel like I had it down with high schoolers, but I’m having to learn so much when it comes to work with 12 year olds! #oklaed
A3 The problem is that I have Ss who don't see themselves as writers because they forget to capitalize their I's, aren't good at spelling, and don't know how to use semicolons. Not true! They all have a story to tell and something important to say. #oklaed
A3: My problem is that it is so easy to slide back into the old easy ways of teaching high school math, lecture followed by time to work on an assignment day after day, avoid the problems that make Ss really think. I must strive to grow or my students will not grow! #OklaEd
A3: I’m in an odd spot of being “known” & often consulted...but still in the classroom. Patience in finishing that degree & using the opportunity to do a case study will be good for me (& hopefully offer some insight/direction). #OklaEd
A3. TIME. TIME. More Time to dive into all the aspects that I need to dive into as deeply as I need to do. We are always assessing instructional practices, students needs and outcomes with how to balance support for Ts. We have to always move fwd- Push-pull of leadership. #oklaed
Not only is it easy to do that, but sometimes people will not give you the time to struggle through learning and try to insist that the old/traditional way is better/more effective. #OklaEd
A3) A vast majority of my students are overcoming many issues that have placed them at-risk and requiring an Alternative Education setting. They show much growth in many areas that may have low growth academically. However for that student it is significant growth. #oklaed
A3b)So many of the skills we currently teach are based on college prep (which we still need), but we need to adjust to incorporate skills needed for agility in career innovation. #oklaed#softskills#employabletraits
A3: The biggest problem is getting adults to see how trauma is affecting their students. Oftentimes the response is just that students are attention seeking, but it is so much more than that. I need better tools to communicate this to adults. #OklaEd
A3 I work closely with the classroom teachers of my students. Only through constant contact can we assist students to realize their full potential That's why daily data is so important to effect a change, if needed, in instruction. #oklaed
A3b Thinking about learning and sharing learning in new ways...Tech isn’t the icing on the cake, or the fun reward...I want to find new and better ways to make it part of our daily learning journey. #Oklaed
A3: the problem with student led group instruction is choosing specific objectives to be taught while accommodating to the specific needs of specific students without violating confidentiality policies. #oklaed
A3: need more practice integrating it, modeling it, having time to focus on SEL. Getting the S to let go of the fixed mindset is almost reprogramming years of stuff going on. It takes time. But they’re worth it! #oklaed
Q4 -
Keeping your previous answers in mind...How could you develop an environment where you could document what you are seeing/not seeing in your classroom?
#oklaed
Discovering what if anything can come off a Ts plate so we can focus on more of the Trauma Informed practices. How do we free up more Time for them. Elem.Ts need more collaboration tiime. #oklaed
Need the time and buy-in to get it going. My sup, career advisor, and I have attended a few conferences on the importance of agility this year. #oklaed
Moving from HS to MS is such a huge shift. The emotional control is just not there at the MS level. They don’t know how to regulate themselves & everything is a HUGE deal. #OklaEd
Q4 -
Keeping your previous answers in mind...How could you develop an environment where you could document what you are seeing/not seeing in your classroom?
#oklaed
Now I know why teachers want to be paid more, it's called hazardous duty pay
This is reprehensible. No teacher should have to go through this! https://t.co/tf1lVZRRBk
Q4 -
Keeping your previous answers in mind...How could you develop an environment where you could document what you are seeing/not seeing in your classroom?
#oklaed
A4 #oklaed Little cameras inside of a disco ball.
If that's not practical, how about student reflections...something like journaling - I think that's with a soft J.
Q4 -
Keeping your previous answers in mind...How could you develop an environment where you could document what you are seeing/not seeing in your classroom?
#oklaed
Q4 -
Keeping your previous answers in mind...How could you develop an environment where you could document what you are seeing/not seeing in your classroom?
#oklaed
A4 Reflecting on lesson plans...what works, what doesn’t...did I do what I set out to do...am I using tech for techs sake...or am I using it for something new and innovative??#OklaEd
A4) STUDENT VOICE is paramount - Curriculum audits looking for windows & mirrors - I also video record my teaching for both myself & critical friends to watch and critique (except last week the camera died 20 min into the lesson 🙃) #oklaed
Q4 -
Keeping your previous answers in mind...How could you develop an environment where you could document what you are seeing/not seeing in your classroom?
#oklaed
A4) measuring what we see versus what we collect via a test is a challenge #oklaed needs to address. The iPhone is 11 years old over half of our students have never lived in a world without an iPhone except in some classrooms
A4b: I think to get a wider perspective, I would have to see what is going on in other classes too. So maybe ask colleagues to record and reflect #oklaed
A4) Attendance, discipline and other data points could be used to show growth in behaviors. Grades are not as reliable because they are too subjective. Yet, I need a way to measure the qualitative elements and value over the quantitative elements b/c it would be valuable #oklaed
Q4 -
Keeping your previous answers in mind...How could you develop an environment where you could document what you are seeing/not seeing in your classroom?
#oklaed
A4: more student led activities would free up some time, have a peer observe, video yourself. Have your students give you feedback. Feedback doesn’t have to be one way street. #oklaed
A4. For Admin we can chart practices we want to see and assess what we are seeing as we are in classrooms - then have crucial conversations. Regarding time - creativity, out of the box thinking will be required. Bold audacious steps at times. hmmmm-pondering. #oklaed
Q4 -
Keeping your previous answers in mind...How could you develop an environment where you could document what you are seeing/not seeing in your classroom?
#oklaed
A4: This is really tricky in a counseling office where confidentiality is so important, but the need to track kids is also vital. I don’t have an answer yet. #oklaed
Q4 -
Keeping your previous answers in mind...How could you develop an environment where you could document what you are seeing/not seeing in your classroom?
#oklaed
A4: immediate feedback using verbal assessment of mastery dialogue, group discussions regarding the student-led learning with Ss input on what worked and what would work better. An environment of them assisting with determining effectiveness of this approach. #oklaed
Q4 -
Keeping your previous answers in mind...How could you develop an environment where you could document what you are seeing/not seeing in your classroom?
#oklaed
A4 I find that time isn't always on my side, but the rewards of having the most recent observations during my meetings with classroom teachers are priceless. We can work as a team when each of us knows what the other is doing and what is working and what is not. #oklaed
A4- It could include welcoming others into my classroom to observe and informing observers of exactly what i want then to look for throughout the class period. #OklaEd
Q4 -
Keeping your previous answers in mind...How could you develop an environment where you could document what you are seeing/not seeing in your classroom?
#oklaed
A4b: I think to get a wider perspective, I would have to see what is going on in other classes too. So maybe ask colleagues to record and reflect #oklaed
A4. Maybe invite others in to tally the number of minutes I spend on each activity and the speed of transitions. Then, consider ways to allow brain breaks that give kids a chance to center themselves mentally. #oklaed
A4) Lots of conversations with employers locally and then followup with Ts for realistic implementation ideas. Get them to be comfortable being uncomfortable as we grow together and learn. #oklaed
A4b: School counselors need a way to tell kid’s stories from year to year w/out breaking confidentiality. There are educators who spend all year learning what works for a kid only to pass him/her along to the next person who starts from square 1. #oklaed
A4) tracking types of mindfulness techniques with usage of mindfulness practices and changes in the classroom community based on mindfulness practices #oklaed
Q4 -
Keeping your previous answers in mind...How could you develop an environment where you could document what you are seeing/not seeing in your classroom?
#oklaed
A4 As part of #NBCT, I am recording a couple of my classes. Watching those videos multiple times, transcribing them, and then describing, analyzing, and reflecting on what happened will help me see what I do not notice otherwise. #OklaEd
A5: This is the part I'm terrible at because I've always been told to record somehow in a written fashion (journal, online log, etc.). I think I communicate more effectively when I'm talking, so maybe record video or audio notes. Plus, it saves time! #oklaed
A5) Google forms are a great way to get feedback quickly and regularly from Ss and/or Ts. Community members can also complete surveys for feedback. #oklaed
A5 #oklaed Seriously - ask the students. Are you engaged? Are you more curious than when you started taking this class? Do you want know more about (chemistry/the Ottoman Empire/Dante/French/mathematical theorems) than you did earlier?
A5. #oklaed oops answered this in A4. Charting what we are seeing vs what we want/hope to see. Calendar specific times otherwise the urgent will nudge out the necessary.
A5) Sometimes the quest to collect and document can feel like a live event in today's world. Too many people are focused on the tech and lose the feel of the event. Perhaps not everything in the education of our students need to be documented. Relationships over data. #oklaed
A5b #oklaed When I teach for the @SNU_MAEL program, I ask students to write two journal entries per class. The first is #onecoolthing; the second is #iwanttoknowmore. Let your students tell you what fascinates them and tell you what makes them go "hmmmm."
A5: This is where instructional coaches could be used to collect data and then discuss the facts that are observed. But, I have never taught in a high school with an instructional coach. :( Wish I could be one. #OklaEd
A5: again.. feedback doesn’t have to be a one way street. It shouldn’t be in fact. Students deserve to have a voice even in regard to teacher performance. #oklaed
#oklaed A5) In TLI, we have weekly coaching sessions plus quarterly opportunities to reflection using the coaching scope and sequence plus a measure we call care/behave. https://t.co/iw6C0vrE51
Very low-tech, but I use a Post-it. Not every day, but those high-plan items like a simulation activity or such. Then, when I pull out the activity again, I have a note if I need to adjust something. A clean original means good-to-go. #OklaEd
A5. Maybe give myself some journaling time along with my students. Taking a moment to reflect on the previous class while mentally preparing for the next one could be a game changer. #oklaed
A5: Constant reflection and relationships with all students. You never know what situation will walk through your door. Be approachable and willing/ready to listen. #oklaed
A6) First steps - communicate and collaborate with businesses to see what they need and what we need. Observe other districts already doing this in some form. #oklaed
Yes! Especially if I can come in the next day and let them know a summary of what people said and how I was going to make immediate changes to meet their needs! #oklaed
A6. Set some goals or expectations with benchmarks for time needed for study - then calendar/chart out the plan of action with 90 day goal, then work the plan backwards to determine the incremental steps needed. Then determine addl training that may be needed at later pt #oklaed
A6: students could always provide feedback via anonymous survey. If you really want to know how you can improve or what is working, ask the children. #Oklaed we survey Ss to see how they learn, why not to see how we teach?
A6: I risk sounding like a broken record, but working toward National Board Certification walks you through this process - and has ways to ensure it is making a difference. #oklaed
A6 Organize lesson plans, reflection, sample of student work, observation, ideas shared from others...all organized in @OneNoteEDU (just need to add a tab or 2 to my notebook!) #OklaEd
A6) The first step I can take to organize an in-depth study of one aspect of my practice would be to do a SWOT analysis to identify the area that will influence my students the most. #oklaed
A6) I have an ongoing one right now! Currently conducting interviews with students from last year with what worked, what didn't, what can be improved, and what can be added to make the class more effective #oklaed
That’s such a fantastic method. I especially love the imeadiate feedback. Now I just need to tweak it for middle school so I don’t get lots of “give us more candy” responses. #OklaEd
That is the important part...collecting data without doing something with it becomes a pointless, meaningless task. Data collection for the sake of data collection shouldn't occur. #useit#oklaed
The @UMDCollegeofEd Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership program. You also get to pick a specialization, mine is Minority and Urban Education #oklaed
A6 You have to first realize what is missing from what you are doing. For me, it was daily recording of data to assist me in conferences and guide my instruction to improve student performance. #oklaed
Identifying explicit teaching of mindfulness or the integration of play-based learning opportunities and then identify outcomes and look fors in the classroom based on student engagement and behaviors #oklaed
A7: Time! Even more than money, time slips by too quickly. I'll have good intentions, and then it is two months later and it's too late for what I had planned. #oklaed
A7: be prepared for some criticism. We can’t grow or learn if all feedback were positive. That’s not even real. So if you ask for it, be ready to receive it, and turn it into a growing experience. #oklaed
A7: The perception that most bad behavior deserves immediate punishment instead of thoughtful consideration & discipline. Most times the bad behavior isn’t the issue to needs to be addressed. #oklaed
A7. Barriers if charting classroom practices & working toward more trauma informed practices will be assessing the lack of understanding/recognition of students with trauma 1st. We will need to determine level of training needed. Training time will need to be determined. #oklaed
A7 Sometimes the greatest challenge is wanting to improve when you're just trying to survive. Teachers need time, resources, and support. There's no shortage of great ideas out here. #oklaed
A7: My biggest barrier this year is that I am the only T in my building teaching the courses that I teach. I just moved from a large district where there was always someone next door to collaborate with. Now, there are many days that I feel alone in the fight to improve! #OklaEd
A7) Anytime a shift in collecting and reporting data that shows meaningful data for students that don't share the same specifications or shows the same data points as everyone else means potential barriers from the district, state, parents,or community.Make it meaningful. #oklaed
A7: giving up some control. 🤣Seeing that some concepts take more time to teach by Ss but the end game is our goal. Let them be the leaders of their learning and take a back seat. Being able to prove the approach to other stakeholders. #oklaed
The article I shared with my faculty talks about times when we are just trying to survive and how to move back into a learning zone from a zero-learning zone. Good dialog among staff. #oklaedhttps://t.co/JG1kxmomyH
A7 I think new teachers are so overloaded with learning the materials they are using as well as standards, they don't have anything left to focus on this topic. Couple that with emergency certifications and those are real barriers. #oklaed
A8: When I am met with deaf ears, keep on keeping on, sometimes that is to continue on that path, sometimes it is to turn the corner and move on down the road #oklaed
A8) Communication is key to overcome the barriers. I have to be able to show how well my students are doing despite the challenges they overcome on a daily basis. I have to find a way to let all stakeholders know the growth even if the academic scores mask the potential. #oklaed
Hmmm.. to create time for some things that are needed will require creativity, innovation and out of the box thinking. Sometimes our own finite thinking or even "group think" can be the barrier. Where there is a Will there is a WAY!! First things First! #oklaed
I think this is mentioned almost every week over on @oklasaid - but the way #Oklaed shares/trades/collaborates with all of these different ideas just blows me away. You are some dang #amazeballs.
