If you are new to we use a Q1 A1 format. Please make sure to include the hashtag in your tweets.
I've seen some tweets about it, I just need to find out more about the whole process!
check out . He has some great blog posts regarding and how to get started.
Let's get started with tonight's topic: The Typical Day of an Instructional Coach
That'll lead to great things!
Q1: What are some common duties/components each day that are essential for instructional coaching?
I'll search for a blog post in a little bit.
I'll echo the frustration with your car.
that sounds intriguing. Tell me more...
A1: Sounds corny, but do work on relationships with Admin/Ts/Ss EVERY DAY! https://t.co/PtZ1KRGZx0
Q1: What are some common duties/components each day that are essential for instructional coaching?
All is fine now. No clue what was wrong. Hope you are enjoying your midwest tour. Heard good things about Tues.
A1 Being in classrooms and communicating with admin are essential.
A1 not sure I have a typical day. Excited to hear from others!
A1: Visibility, PLC Meetings, taking time to grow as a professional, and communication are a few.
A1: openness with comm., effective leading, and ability to give constructive feedback. Seeing what's going on in the classroom.
A1: Building relationships, check on instructional groups, collect/analyzing data, finding resources, debriefs & coaching cycles
Everyone has a different feel to their days. Great to learn from each other.
A1 Coaches should prioritize spending time with teachers: talking, planning, analyzing data, laughing.
A1: checking email/help requests, aligning curriculum, collab with Ts, locating resources, analyze data
Not corny at all. Relationships are the foundation of our work.
A1: as a new ICS, I continue to work on relationships with Ts, Ss, and admin everyday. Communication is key to all of that
A1: build time to reflect into your day- don't let reflection become haphazard
A1: getting into various classrooms and touching base and following up with Ts.
A1: On the spot decision making! https://t.co/FEaASTrogk
Q1: What are some common duties/components each day that are essential for instructional coaching?
A1: Build relationships, instructional planning, PLC, model/coteach, everything!!!!
A1: Definitely agree with not having a typical day. Some require more time behind the scenes than others, planning and such
Doesn’t sound corny at all; sounds core
A1 Checking in with Ts. Not just ones you're currently coaching but any who may need a smile or positive comment.
I knew Robert would come through with the info! Thanks, Robert!!
Hello! Paulina, Literacy Coach from the Virgin Islands. Just jumping in. Thought I missed it. We are in est time. So, it's 9pm
Communication is essential!
Nancy from SW Iowa. A1: be visible. Have contact with Ts and Ss. https://t.co/G105REFIo3
Q1: What are some common duties/components each day that are essential for instructional coaching?
This is so true. I love that you included laughing. Relationships are where the growth happens! https://t.co/wfRunmtlPs
A1 Coaches should prioritize spending time with teachers: talking, planning, analyzing data, laughing.
are you familiar with edcamp?
Time for some math...
Q2: What % of your day is spent on: observations, coaching conversations, paperwork, communication?
A1 All the other "stuff" (paperwork, emails, office-type duties) must wait til after school/before school.
A2: currently this semester is about 20% since I have a student teacher I am able to observe more and act more admin-like
A1 I work in 11 buildings so time management, communication, and research
A1: I am additionally our math intervention so half of my day is spent in int. Groups. Everyone's day is different!
San Diego coaches, teachers, admin: I'm coming your way in May 2017! The Art of Coaching workshop - More https://t.co/fce3cdmb9g
yes, I am-just was curious how this might look through a PD lens. Sounds amazing!
Yes! If we don't reflect, we always do things the same way. If we do the same, we get the same.
Q2: being new, I haven't spent much time coaching teachers yet. I am focused on relationships and becoming familiar to Ts first
We use an Open Space for a portion of our teacher leader network days.
A2: Observations: 25%, coaching conversations: 25%, paperwork 15%, communication 100%! communication is everything
thanks for passing along!
A2: Typical days maybe 50% meeting with/visiting Ts/co-teaching, the rest is researching, planning, etc. https://t.co/pktglmHPwu
Time for some math...
Q2: What % of your day is spent on: observations, coaching conversations, paperwork, communication?
I try for at least 30-40% in classrooms, with Ts, admin. Communication & sharing resources, 20%. https://t.co/6RsPAVYRgz
Time for some math...
Q2: What % of your day is spent on: observations, coaching conversations, paperwork, communication?
Lindsay from TX teach 1/2 day PK and serve as campus admin/instructional coach the other 1/2
Coaches & admin must have clarity of goals and strategies. That allows for proper prioritization. https://t.co/RIaMOjLgAb
A1: great advice how do we ensure that coaches time is focused on this
A1: Self PD/Learning--an essential component to being an effective coach; Assisting teachers with their goals.
Feel free to add planning time to the mix. :)
A2: being new, I haven't spent much time coaching teachers yet. I am focused on relationships and becoming familiar to Ts first
A2: I would think at least 75%. That's a huge part of our role as coaches. Student and teacher growth must be our priority.
looking at getting Ts to create & sign up for sessions including Ts among all 4 schools in the district
A2: Paperwork and administrative meetings = 20% Reflection/Being Coached = 10% Coaching (observing, feedback, convos) = 70%
A1 check in w/Ts esp ones you know are/have been struggling and/or trying something new
A2 I try to have it about 50/50 with being in classrooms and being in meetings.
It takes time to grow your craft, be patient, it will come.
Q3: What part of coaching should most of the time be spent? Why?
That;s so valuable - great idea to spend your first weeks/months doing just that
A2: I use Google Forms to keep up with . Typical day: 40% planning, 40% observations-feedback-conversations cycle.
Agree! Communication 100% A2 coaching convo 25-30%, research/planning 25-30%, obs 10%, mtgs, 25-30%
what a great concept! Would love to hear how it goes as you move forward!
A3: Feedback. The more feedback, the more they are then able to grow and learn how to become better in the future.
Thanks! We also have a new math resource so Ts are becoming comfortable with that first
These relationships will get you there. Google Coaching heavy v coaching light. It'll give you tips to grow
A2: Depends on needs of Ts. Today it was 50% Ts and 50% planning
Similar to an . Participant driven topics. Meetings are for Teacher Leaders/coaches
A3: Modeling, Co-planning, Co-teaching, Providing feedback, Reflecting. https://t.co/vOa5ThkQMY
Q3: What part of coaching should most of the time be spent? Why?
I feel a lot has to do with time of year too. Seems November-April are solid. Others a bit slower with dec. to
A2 paperwork: 25% comm: 50% coach convos: 15% obs: 10%
Insightful answer; in what ways to you offer feedback; any advice on effective ways to give feedback
Thank you! I most definitely will! I also attend PIIC in PA and it is great support for new coaches.
A2: It varies but always trying to keep coaching and communication at the forefront. https://t.co/qtjB3W3QWx
Time for some math...
Q2: What % of your day is spent on: observations, coaching conversations, paperwork, communication?
Most time spent on 1:1 meetings to go through the "coaching cycle" and get/give feedback, next steps, etc. https://t.co/OPKqzg8p11
Q3: What part of coaching should most of the time be spent? Why?
A3: planning & debrief are key to coaching, must build in time for those weekly along with observation & co-teaching.
A3 Most time should be conversations. When we change the thinking, we change the practice and make a difference for kids.
A2 It varies day to day. Average: 50% coaching/meeting, 30% planning, 20% admin-like duties.
A3: coaching conversations are where the magic happens, so I really enjoy spending majority of coaching talking with colleagues
And you are doing some AMAZING things with our Ts! Keep it up! Was totally bragging on you today! https://t.co/Wo21GNeBKZ
A2: Depends on needs of Ts. Today it was 50% Ts and 50% planning
A3: Collaborating, whether planning, reflecting, or analyzing data because we construct new and deeper learning together.
. both formal and informal conversations. Anything that helps them understand what was seen/how to improve.
A3 I love being in coaching conversations, analyzing video, and team planning meetings. A lot of great stuff there!
We’ve been working w/our students on giving&receiving feedback to each other; important topic
A3: co planning and modeling so teachers feel confident to try something new
I agree. Some times we tend to put these off in the beginning - but it is important to set this into action.
A3 Coaches should spend most of their time engaged in capacity-building practices to support their teachers' reflective growth
A3 most time spent with teachers collaborating, reflecting, trying new techniques, reinforcing best practices
Q3: Working w/ teachers in the classrooms (demos, debriefing reflecting, celebrating) - we build relationships by being present
A3 depends on needs, should be flexible. But mostly should be directly with Ts, helping/training/strengthening/uplifting
A3 I wonder sometimes if ICs spend too much time observing and not enough time coaching. It's like assessing v teaching.
A3: we follow a BDA cycle, and the majority of time should be in the After. Reflection and discussion is key to Ts learning
A3: Spending time with Ts! I like to consider their reflective practices and starting points as described by .
agreed! It is tough not slipping into the "fix it" roll.
A3: Working w/ teachers in the classrooms (demos, debriefing reflecting, celebrating) - we build relationships by being present
A3 Getting in the classrooms for anything big or small! Then providing feedback!
I've noticed we agree a lot. :)
YESSSS!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 any suggestions/ideas appreciated!! https://t.co/60M3qasl84
We are starting a data wall and need to know what info you include on student cards. Any suggestions?
Q4: What are barriers to effectively managing the daily coaching schedule to be successful?
I agree! What do you think about on the spot coaching while conducting the observation? https://t.co/HQCGXjwRFx
A3 I wonder sometimes if ICs spend too much time observing and not enough time coaching. It's like assessing v teaching.
Focus on behavior to "fix" today. Focus on thinking to improve all the tomorrows. https://t.co/dM9pjuBvYI
agreed! It is tough not slipping into the "fix it" roll.
A4 meetings and idea that coach needs to be involved in ALL aspects of school
A4 My struggle is the days I cant meet with people due to schedules. A lot of time in the classrooms those days
Our data wall is in a place where students & visitors often go, so it's pretty confidential. We use colors & a key
A4 Silly nonsensical compliance rules/forms that prove we are doing our jobs. I'd much rather coach Ts than log my hours!
A4: Ss, meetings, being pulled in so many directions to where you can't get in a classroom to observe.
I agree! What do you think about on the spot coaching while conducting the observation? https://t.co/HQCGXjwRFx
A3 I wonder sometimes if ICs spend too much time observing and not enough time coaching. It's like assessing v teaching.
": Let's get started w/ tonight's topic: The Typical Day of an Instructional Coach " is there such a thing?
We used colored dots to indicate low SESS, IEP, ESL, etc. Good luck!
Is there a way to step back and evaluate how time is spent w/who is pulling in other directions?
There are possibilities for that if the right relationship is built. There's a risk of discrediting or alienating T
A4: HUGE barrier when coaches are used as pseudo admin. Already heard mentioned here tonight. Big no no! https://t.co/cjgQZr9JId
Q4: What are barriers to effectively managing the daily coaching schedule to be successful?
Loved learning with you guys! I just learned about this PLN tonight! How exciting!!!
A3 Don't have set %. I formatively assess Ss, Ts, & school 2 make desicions on my activities just like we do in classroom.
A4 That's easy. Administrators and their demands derail coaches the most. They need to protect coaches' time!
A4: Being out of the building for various reasons, meetings & prep for those meetings, nonimpactful requests, materials management
A4: sometimes days are unpredictable due to working in a school setting-things come up out of our control but can impact our day
So glad you found Welcome!
Loved learning with you guys! I just learned about this PLN tonight! How exciting!!!
A4 Interruptions. If we don't priorize the important things, everything seems urgently important.
A4: The NEED to clone ourselves! Being ok with prioritizing - difficult to make a decision whether be in the classroom vs. mtgs.
A4: having available time when Ts are free and still being able to conduct intervention groups. My job responsibilities are split
I have been feeling like this, also. Too much time "observing". https://t.co/unQXtPHQKX
I agree! What do you think about on the spot coaching while conducting the observation? https://t.co/HQCGXjwRFx
A3 I wonder sometimes if ICs spend too much time observing and not enough time coaching. It's like assessing v teaching.
A4 When admin truly understand the coaching role and partner to support teachers' growth, amazing things happen!
A4 YES! HUMONGOUS NO!!! https://t.co/zYtquNHsfm
A4: HUGE barrier when coaches are used as pseudo admin. Already heard mentioned here tonight. Big no no! https://t.co/cjgQZr9JId
Q4: What are barriers to effectively managing the daily coaching schedule to be successful?
YEP! THE MOST important thing! Sing it loud and clear! https://t.co/XzxfAL2npd
A4 When admin truly understand the coaching role and partner to support teachers' growth, amazing things happen!
A4: coach to teacher ratio, I work with about 120 teachers in grades 3-5 making it hard to effectively meet all needs
Yes, this! https://t.co/ylc1QZjIhI
A4 When admin truly understand the coaching role and partner to support teachers' growth, amazing things happen!
Impossible to meet all needs; how have you prioritized?
On my phone so thank you for retweeting questions!
Q5: What tips/tools do you have for others on managing the daily schedule of a coach?
I believe there is/should be. Watching one of my AP's he spends a great deal of his time with Ss, which is GREAT.
ditto! 100 Ts 10-12. At least it's one bldg A4
A4 Lack of focus and purpose in the coaching program https://t.co/g4PICp0P8R
Q4: What are barriers to effectively managing the daily coaching schedule to be successful?
We are VERY lucky with our admin support in this capacity!! https://t.co/OEy67gW3zJ
A4 When admin truly understand the coaching role and partner to support teachers' growth, amazing things happen!
Either, really. It should be observation AND ___. Learning about the classrooms and practice is vital but what's next?
Perhaps collecting our own time audit data and then bring the data to the powers that be?
A5: schedule priorities: including email. Only check it @ scheduled times. Calendar everything even after completed to track time.
holy cow! That's definitely hard to prioritize needs with that high of number!
A5: Blocking off times specifically for visiting classrooms - and stick with those times. Email to Ts stating focus of that week.
A4. Being responsible for checking behind folks and enforcing deadlines.
A5: It's not fancy, but I keep an old fashioned plan book
I am fortunate in this regard, too. Makes my work go well.
A5 Coach & admin: sit down, agree on goals & plans. Then, be okay with saying NO to requests that don't match.
A5: Use appointment slots on Google Calendar or youcanbookme for T to set time with you https://t.co/LpOziJzPQw
Q5: What tips/tools do you have for others on managing the daily schedule of a coach?
A5: try and block off time each day to get into classrooms or sit down with Ts to give feedback/evaluate.
A5 Schedule more time than you need for tasks. If it'll take an hour to complete, schedule 1.5 hours. Then interruptions are ok.
Great ideas! https://t.co/joTuMTL6WA
A5: Blocking off times specifically for visiting classrooms - and stick with those times. Email to Ts stating focus of that week.
I am so excited as an admin to have strong coaches. Great things are happening in Somerville!
A5: Google calendar and I are best friends. Make sure to schedule out coaching timeline with teachers to ensure it's a priority.
A5 I've been experimenting with a variety of journaling techniques related to the Bullet Journal https://t.co/CZCqUYDYFA
As an IC, Google Apps have been an amazing tool for prioritizing, scheduling, organizing, planning, & collaborating with teachers!
Q5 As Ms. Houser says, prioritize and lock in your schedule.
A5:https://t.co/1XcU8R2fdn to keep an electronic schedule accessible from anywhere. Makes it easier to be flexible.
A5 google calendar and my google form coaching log are my keys. Learning to schedule planning and research time
This reminds me of 's philosophy. Are you familiar? Good stuff.
we code our calendar events to track how we are prioritizing our time-so helpful!
I use Google Calendar! On my 📱 and computer 💻!! Makes it handy!!
I agree! This would be powerful for a willing teacher!
I also use Google forms to track my meetings with Ts and classroom visits! https://t.co/SPtqeubNVO
As an IC, Google Apps have been an amazing tool for prioritizing, scheduling, organizing, planning, & collaborating with teachers!
Yes they are!! Stronger every day! I'm so excited for us!! https://t.co/IvvogI5ySc
I am so excited as an admin to have strong coaches. Great things are happening in Somerville!
Wow!!! I can't imagine. I work with 27 teachers only! Never will complain again...NEVER! https://t.co/VTVD0uoWFU
A4: coach to teacher ratio, I work with about 120 teachers in grades 3-5 making it hard to effectively meet all needs
A5 One coach I know color codes here electronic calendar to various duties (one color for coaching cycle, etc... )
Love this idea! https://t.co/1vCjE6tpO3
A5 google calendar and my google form coaching log are my keys. Learning to schedule planning and research time
Or - I give them linited access to google calendar https://t.co/CtNGV9xxow
ok, so you basically send out your 'schedule' to the whole school so they know what you're doing?
sounds like you are coaching teams of teachers; that’s an interesting topic for us at
Would you be willing to share your Google Form Coaching Log?
I'm not sure, please share!
absolutely agree! https://t.co/GAtaqW0Gur
we code our calendar events to track how we are prioritizing our time-so helpful!
A3 it depends on the teachers, some teachers prefer 1-1 some small group, some in class support. It’s all about them
saying no is the hardest part, but I love that you shared. Have to leave time for our agreed upon priorities.
Q6: What types of things do you do outside of the school day related to your role?
interesting idea, transparency. What has the response been? how do Ts in your cycles feel about it?
A2 I have a coach piloting a form that tracks this As a leader of our coaches we thought it would B a good idea 2 track this
you can have T book time slots on your calendar. check it out!
great idea! I do that for meetings with travel time, etc but great suggestion for other tasks, too
A4: Staying focused on Ts when other duties pile up.
A5 BE FLEXIBLE! Sometimes the unexpected happens. Write everything down. Protorize ur coaching goals. Have Ts schedule time w/ u.
Love this! Great to see a visual!
He runs The Principal Center. Stuff for admins, but really all instruct. leaders. Check out https://t.co/a0lIU42uJX
A6: Doctoral courses, Voxer groups, other Twitter chats mostly https://t.co/OsJB5WXPV6
Q6: What types of things do you do outside of the school day related to your role?
A6 AMAZING Twitter chats with my AMAZING colleagues who took a chance on me! Love it!!
yes, same here. Great way to share with others how ICs are utilizing time across district.
A6: Researching, reading, creating resources, reflecting with Ts
A6: Doctoral courses, twitter chats, generic collaboration with colleagues.
A6 Outside of the school day = professional reading, finishing tasks I left unfinished during the day, Twitter chats.
A6: Attending conferences (, ), reading prof books, twitter chats
I admit missed !
A6: I help with family math events. Or present at school board meetings. Some PD after… https://t.co/6OVHSYhdOS
Q6: What types of things do you do outside of the school day related to your role?
A6: professional reading/learning, email communication, planning/preparing for cycles, reflection
A2 we are using a time & effort form, but I like the doc shared in the chat as well
yes, you need to be flexible and be open and approachable (the door is always open)
Yay! I love when people share. I don't have a form, or I'd share too. :) https://t.co/oldJuwFa94
I'd love to see what you use on Google Forms and I would be happy to share the forms I use too.
A6: teaching clases through our university
A6: Lots of PD! Twitter, professional books/articles, professional websites, emails to Ts about things I read.
Thank you so much! I will check it out soon.
Q7: How do you know when your day has been successful/when you’ve made an impact?
A6: email/coaching notes; meet w/teachers before & after school day;research & read for ongoing growth;connect w/my Twitter PLN
sounds amazing, so envious! someday a week long institute is in my future. https://t.co/aehMrTTXmX
Speaking of conference - who is going to Jim Knight's conference next week? Any interest in meeting F2F Wed. night… https://t.co/FJVyW92WBM
A5: Prioritize morning time for the most important work. If don't check your email for 2 hours, then it'll still be there for you.
A6: principal cert. Practicum! Done in May, Woo! Professional reading 1 book a month minimum. Oh...and PLN !
A6: A lot of reading, dissertation, research, perusing social media (mainly Twitter), & continual conversations & learning
A6 Outside the school day is where all the stuff that doesn't require a live classroom have to be.
A7: Sometimes, I judge my effectiveness by how much/little time I spend in my office
not a contest, but I work with about 150 K-8...
A7 smile/look of relief on a Ts face, a thank you, or seeing something implemented in a class!
A7 thought-provoking conversations with Ts are when I feel successful
Lots of my emailing is done after work as well. It's pretty low priority if a T or S needs me.
I second that! https://t.co/gbkSJFl3pY
A7: Sometimes, I judge my effectiveness by how much/little time I spend in my office
A6 research using Twitter, FB, webinars, PD books, etc, creating resources and synthesizing information from my day/week
A7: When you need to remind a student to not walk and read at the same time - it’s dangerous! (deep down i’m celebrating reading)
A6 And once you leave school, leave school.
A7: I keep a list everyday of Ts to meet with, tasks to complete, when I have most highlighted, I know I was productive.
A7: by how many individuals you have effective conversations with. Focus on the feedback, not the paperwork. Checklists.
Wonderful! We need educators who are prepared to teach other educators. Good for you!
A7: positive feedback from teachers; reflection on day
LOVE that you mentioned reflection. Something done so much for others throughout our day but vital for us as well
Exactly! Coaches need to have a life! (except on Wed. at 8pm when we talk shop) https://t.co/Gy9Oixu8Yp
A6 And once you leave school, leave school.
Oh...I'm not so great at this.
A7 Tricky question, since the coach's impact is long-term. So...are you staying true to your goals & action plan?
I'll try to figure out if others are interested. Maybe in hotel lobby somewhere?
A7 When I am exhausted with a smile on my face! When those I work with smile & feel empowered!
But let's be sure to connect either way!
when you go home tired with a smile on your face. when teachers email you at home
A6 Twitter, reading prof books, planning!
. always great when you walk out exhausted but smiling.
Q8: What should every teacher/principal know about your schedule/daily work?
A7: Ts feeling supported and improved.
Think I have a new addiction. Joined one chat and stumbled upon another and now watching both of them. :)
A7 It's hard to articulate, but it's the times I see in a teacher's eyes/actions that they have a new understanding.
A6 playing with my kids, and looking after yourself
A8: That even though you may not be visible you are still working hard behind the scenes! https://t.co/HGrthiYoAH
Q8: What should every teacher/principal know about your schedule/daily work?
A7: colleague acknowledging your support or seeing impact of coaching through student learning; a full schedule due to work w/Ts
Welcome the the wonderful world of Twitter! (and hello from Sioux City)
A6: Along with everyone's answer, we need to add take care of ourselves. Exercise, eat well, get enough sleep.
A8 it is purposeful and meaningful. And I promise I will get done what I need to!
A8 Teachers and admin don't often understand our role. Telling our story is a great way to build connections & show them.
Yes! Lightbulb moments https://t.co/qlTnzvJUBY
A7 It's hard to articulate, but it's the times I see in a teacher's eyes/actions that they have a new understanding.
I like using the appointment slots feature of Google Calendar
A8: I want to share my calendar with them so they are able to see what's going on in my classroom and when coaching can occur.
Love this!!! https://t.co/D9r4DIpmA1
A7: When you need to remind a student to not walk and read at the same time - it’s dangerous! (deep down i’m celebrating reading)
A8 That my role should be defined by need and aligned with campus goals. It is always adapting to the C outcome desired.
A8 All teachers & admin need to understand coach's role, goals, action plan, & how to access the coach (short & long-term).
A7 When admin are looking for me bc I've been in classrooms all day!
I'm thinking and need to help with a chat on all things Google!
Oops. Almost missed ... https://t.co/7WIYNMWx8T
I admit missed !
A6: I help with family math events. Or present at school board meetings. Some PD after… https://t.co/6OVHSYhdOS
Q6: What types of things do you do outside of the school day related to your role?
A8 that learning is never done, we can always grow in our teaching
is this a special feature in google (appointment slots)? https://t.co/Ejpys4OZrS
I like using the appointment slots feature of Google Calendar
A7: When Ts come ask my advice, come tell me about their day, share resources, give me a hug, smile
Signing off a few minutes early. Thank you friends. Enjoyed the chat!
yes, not very hard to use though
A8: Ts, principals and coaches all work hard, how can we work hard 2gether to build student achievement & foster collab growth
Q9 What is something that stuck with you tonight? What goals do you have for yourself?
A8: that even though I may look very busy, never ever hesitate to ask me a question. I am always here to support
Knowing how to access the coach is huge!
I will definitely have to google this one and figure it out. Thanks for that https://t.co/OXIoF5VT6l
