Hi! I'm Kendra, a learning designer/innovation coach. I love getting see Teachers (& other coaches) grow their comfort zone and want to try more! #NoVAedChat
Also, I love pie and boy was I glad it's #piDay today... @HarrisTeeter does $3.14 pies on 3/14 (don't think I'm not eating Cherry pie right now). #LovesPie#NoVAedChat
Hi! I'm Kendra, a learning designer/innovation coach. I love getting see Teachers (& other coaches) grow their comfort zone and want to try more! #NoVAedChat
A1 With any Learning, you get out what you’re able to put in. We want Ss to leave lessons “different” and feeling as if they had a part in the learning experience....not that learning or school is something done to them. #NoVAedchat
Hi guys! I’m Abbey Miller, Resource Teacher at McNair ES! What I 💗 most about my job is that our field is always changing! We need to grow, adapt, and learn to fit the needs of our students and sometimes we don’t know where that journey will take us! #novaedchat
A1: When students feel like they 'own' their learning, they take pride in it. They tend to be more engaged and interested in what they are doing if it is theirs. #NoVAedChat
We want students to feel like they own their learning because it captivates their brain and enables them to think: hey I want this and I'm capable! #NoVAedchat
A1: Because it's "their" learning. If they don't own it, they won't engage with it. We can guide their learning experience but they are the ones who gain from it. #NoVAedChat
A1: When Ss feel like they own their learning then they are more likely to take risks and to think outside of the box. When Ts control their learning then they sit and wait to be told what to do. #novaedchat
When students feel like they own their learning, they are more invested and take risks in order to grow into their own hands. It also provides more opportunities for student-student learning #novaedchat@vgatling93
A1 I’m going to take a page right out of @spencerideas and @ajjuliani’s incredible book, Empower: What Happens When Students Own Their Learning for this answer!! If you haven’t read this book, order it now! (This is not an ad, I just 💗 this book!) #novaedchat
A2- I think it can start small. Let's ASK KIDS what they want to learn, or how they want to learn, or how they want to show us what they've learned. [@timstahmer] #NoVAedChat
A2 Kind of chaotic!? Ss working on all different paths and topics. Yet still showing they are mastering the specific skills - need to practice persuasive writing? Choose a topic that matters and a method that works for you! #NoVAedchat
A2: As a math teacher, students can take ownership in my classroom by generating a different way to solve a problem other than the way I have shown them or making meaning of the skill in a way he or she can apply it to the real world. #NoVAedChat
A2 (con't) I think we'll see students working together, individually and with the teacher. Getting feedback on what we're doing is important but needs to matter too! Not just a peer review because it's assigned #NoVAedchat
Different from classroom to classroom. Students navigating curriculum in ways that make sense to their individual needs. More students, less teacher. #NoVAedChat
A2: True ownership would be allowing the Ss to have control over the Place, Path, Pace of what they are learning. Allowing the Ss to show what they have learned in different ways rather than a test. #PBL#blendedlearning#novaedchat
A2: Students need choice! Empowered classrooms are student-centered. You won’t see Ts standing up at the board or Ss sitting in rows. Ss are explorers, active, asking questions! Rules don’t focus on compliance. #NoVAedChat
A2 sounds like questions and declarations. What can i make up? When can I come in for tutoring? I am an increasing my grade. I read a book ! Is that right ? #NoVAedchat
A2: S ownership looks like Ss knowing how they’re getting from point A to B. I want to se them asking Qs & finding their own answers, and initiating academic discussions with peers and Ts #NoVAedChat
So true! When I was a 2nd grade teacher I had another teacher come in tell my Ss to be quiet and get to work. They politely turned to her and said, "We are working. Mr. J says if we aren't talking we aren't learning." #Teacherproud#novaedchat
Love including feedback - I think a personal reflection on their progress and what they need to continue learning on their personal path/pace is crucial #NoVAedchat
A3- I think our jobs of 'selling the importance' of content would be drastically reduced. Wild Idea: Kids might WANT to learn what we're teaching :) #NoVAedChat
A3 There is a built in WHY then. We don't have to convince Ss to learn something or practice something when they already want to! I LOVE learning when it's my choice #NoVAedchat
A3: Ss owning their learning would allow us as Ts to get what we all ask for back......TIME! It would free us up to work with the Ss who need a little extra support. #novaedchat
A3: freedom and flexibility to work with individuals or groups, collect formative assessment data in an authentic way, get to know Ss better including their interests and tendancies. I think we need to allow kiddos free exploration w/a focus on #POG#HIGHengagement#NoVAedChat
A2: Students would be working in groups on a choice method; filming a movie, editing a soundtrack, sketching in a sketchbook, animating on the computer, or creating an @AdobeSpark all around a driving question. #novaedchat
A3 Student ownership allows for deeper learning, empowerment, creativity, powerful learning. It allows for a change in how Ts can use their time in the classroom to give feedback and work with Ss. #novaedchat
A3: it’s so cool to see how they approach a target! I’ve got 120 kids looking at the same question, I’ll get so many different outcomes! I learn something new every time! Always a surprise!! #NoVAedchat
A3: When students own their learning, they feel valued and WANT to learn. Sometimes their pride inspires their classmates to want to learn and do well too! #NoVAedChat
Students can tell us more about how they learn than we can possibly come to understand on our own in a semester or school year. They have to be able to understand and own how they learn and we have to allow them opportunities to communicate that in our classrooms. #NoVAedChat
How can we grow without feedback, right?! I love having people observe and I love getting feedback - it can feel like we’re working in a vacuum sometimes without it! #NoVAedchat
A3: I love being able to work with kids who are actively engaged on their own path; problem solving and creative thinking becomes the “teaching” instead. I think it makes me grow as much as them! #NoVAedChat
A4 START SMALL! Don't turn everything over right away. Remember that we have raised Ss who are really great at being compliant... that doesn't always = a free or divergent thinker #NoVAedchat
A4: still working on improving. But choice is a big part of it. From PBLs to digital choice grids, having options is the foundation of ownership. #NoVAedchat
A4 Talking up their future. Asking questions to Ss that assume that their education , in their hands, is in good hands and that this part is temporary and a done deal. Speaking success into existence #NoVAedchat
A4: When I was in the classroom, I spent the first month of school setting that stage for the Ss. I slowly released control to them, so they knew what to do and could be successful. These were 7-8 year olds, but modeling what to do and not harping on what not to do. #novaedchat
A4: what works for me is having Ss set a goal, and then we track their progress regularly and with feedback from me and their peers through structured and unstructured convos and a daily reflection 💯 #NoVAedChat
Hello! #NoVAedChat I'm Michael and a #fcpssbts@IrvingMiddle A bit late, but still wanted to chime in. Looked at the clock and can't believe it's already Wednesday and another #NoVAedChat
To figure out how individual students learn, I love surveys at the beginning of the year and one-on-one conferences throughout the year to manage the learning process. #NoVAedChat
A4: This is definetly hard. Sometimes, I use Google Breakouts and let the students go at their own pace, which is awesome because they are checking their work as they go. But I think the easiest way to do this is by giving them choice in what they are doing. #NoVAedChat
A4: incorporating what “feels like” games to kiddos but is really just components of active #play Students become interested and excited about exploring the topics or activities #novaedchat
A4: I involve them in the modeling process. For writing, I sound out the word and they tell me the sounds they hear. I write them, stressing the sounds, not the conventional spelling. It's great to make mistakes is my motto. #NoVAedchat
A4 The 1st step in moving towards giving Ss more ownership in their learning was actually implementing @JSerravallo's strategy groups (instead of Guided Reading) in Language Arts. I found in GR I was doing all of the work! So exhausting! #novaedchat
That's true/ I had a professor who always told us, "If you are more tired at the end of the day then your Ss, then you did something wrong." #novaedchat
This is one of the hardest parts I think - kids want right/wrong and “the answer”. It’s interesting to see which kids are able to move away from that easily, in my experience its often NOT the straight A kids 🤔 #NoVAedchat
A4 I find it easier to intervene and provide immediate feedback with this model. I can check in with a lot of students in a short amount of time. #novaedchat
A5 I want to know what people have started with... like, where do you jump in? I think that's something I'm asked a lot and I'd love to have other ppl's examples to share #NoVAedchat
Q4 When Ss reflect on their learning, they have pride in that work and know what the know and what the don’t know yet! Like the Personal Goal Tracker @ProfeTravis#NoVAedChat
A5: https://t.co/TNMIWfl4gY helps with setting the stage. Though you must do all the parts to get full benefits. Can't just stick a toe in half way. #novaedchat
Yes!! I had an amazing coteacher a few years ago and whenever Ss brought up grades/SOLs we would start yelling “what are we doing in this class!? LEARNING!!”-might’ve been a little crazy but we had the whole class on board pretty quick! #NoVAedchat
I say a lot that a great start would be to sign up for the PBL 1 Academy Course! It's important to learn about structures to put in place for students so you they are learning at a rigorous level! #novaedchat
A5: I like using Google Forms (breakout), even in the math classroom! You can use "response validation" when setting it up so that students have to give a certain answer. It can help your mixed level students work at their own pace while getting immediate feedback. #NoVAedChat
A1: If students can feel as if they own their learning they’re able to really dive deep into the topic. With ownership, comes engagement and true passion! #Novaedchat
A5a: I have two questions that I seem to get all the time and would love other's responses: I would love to, but my kids are too low, or can't be independent, so how can I? How do I do Blended Learning when my class is 75% ELL? #novaedchat
A3: as students take ownership of their learning, we truly see them shine. Students will start to understand that they are the real motivator behind their learning. We will see students that previously disengaged from a topic that suddenly want to dive in head first! #novaedchat
As #novaedchat comes to an end, I’d like to take this time to make a quick plug for an amazing event on April 21st at @IrvingMiddle. We will be hosting the spring edition of #EdCampNoVA! If you’re interested, check out our registration page https://t.co/Sh0E1tFfXN
I’ve taught sped for 10 yrs, these are the kids who benefit from #BlendedLearning the most!! I would tell them to observe someone who is trying it. And to just try SOMETHING - give the Ss a choice in just one assignment and see what happens 😊 #NoVAedchat
So glad you could join us tonight! If you have a topic you'd love to chat about, message @techymargaret & me about guest co-hosting! We'd love to have you. #NoVAedChat
