just realized it's a math chat...have fun! Catch ya next time!
Tonight we are having a math open chat. You can ask any questions or share ideas. Go ahead!!
How is everyone meeting needs of the struggling math Ss? esp with number sense
Thanks!! So wonderful to have such great support!
Great! Anyone have suggestions for struggling students counting money?
That is a great question. I just started touch math with a couple students. Seems to be helping. https://t.co/A2MLhq6bIv
How is everyone meeting needs of the struggling math Ss? esp with number sense
Hi! Andrea, from Bay Area. Joining in after our with ! Ready to talk math. :)
I've heard of touch math- where can I find resources? online?
I'm thinking of taking out a small group and doing our old math series. Our current is just too hard for them. :(
I'm also interested in Touch Math....
Michelle from WI, reading but exercising at the same time
Yes. There's a bunch on Pinterest. I pinned a few if you want to check them out. https://t.co/v2d55HFQSw
I've heard of touch math- where can I find resources? online?
I've started a workshop model. Mini lesson, have to do task then station. I meet w struggling ss daily during station
for struggling number sense, manipulative of any kind, until I find something that works for them! they get to draw it out.
Hi everyone! Just finished up chat with . fun! I'm sara from WI.
Hi Claire here from Vermont.....it's a beautiful time here......maple sugaring season...yum!
What are you currently using?
Do you have any advice for someone moving from an intermediate grade to 1st?
I have kiddos use 100s chart to place the coins onto as they count them up
I have a class shop; to make learning more meaningful Ss can earn $ for turning in homework, getting Dojo pts, etc
I'm still practicing with just skip counting. Later I will connect with money.
Number sense is so important to build!
Hello, coming in late from Wyoming
It's very, very fast paced and assumes a lot that my Ss don't have. HM is our old series.
make sure to get add facts to 10 string before moving on
We just switched to Eureka Math this year in our district.
went from 4th to 2nd then 1st. even from 2nd to 1st was a jump, but just a lot of patience to start your best bet!
I do something similar - engage whole group and then rotations .. I'm able to meet with each kid daily!
Cody Dunlap. We had quite a few classes together.
Hi, parent of a 1st grader. Just had parent-tchr conference Friday. Our girl needs a little boost in math so thought I'd check in.
look at finding books at garage sales or retiring teachers. Manipulatives too! Legos, block, magnetic letters
new book to
read to support Number Sense Routines: Building Numerical Literacy Every Day in Grades K-3
60 minutes. mini lesson 10-15. Then I meet with 2 groups.
Are you still teaching money? I didn't think it was a 1st grade standard anymore...
Hi I'm Holly, K-5 STEM Coordinator in Tampa, FL! Sorry I'm late... This time change has me all messed up!
Welcome, Jeremy! How great to see a parent joining us! Do you have a particular question?
Eureka Math & are pretty much the same thing. How's it going? It's tough for our kids.
I don't go too deep. Just coin ID and tying skip counting. Dimes=by 10's
Sorry to be joining late - I’m Jenni from Ontario. What’s the topic tonight?
My Ss love for skip counting. https://t.co/fg5TDwrLLb
I'm still practicing with just skip counting. Later I will connect with money.
we do in our district...asked to help support 2nd grade
Yeah. There's QUITE a bit of paper/pencil work too.
math - ask any question or share resources / ideas!
switching over to my laptop & tweetdeck, too many notifications on my cell
Is that in your standards?? That sounds like a hard task.
Oh, I’m not teaching Math this year! :( I’ll still try to join in when I can. :)
Yup. . What module are you on? We skipped 3 and are on 4. Won't come close to finishing.
much more fun! Gives the "fun" side of my brain something to relax with! :)
Karan from WI Does anyone know much about the Bridges math program?
We're going REALLY SLOW in our first year. I'm only on 2. Yeah, we'll be way short.
daily number talks REALLY help esp with explaining their thinking
I'm thinking about skipping around after spring break to touch other content.
Me too but I'm in denial.
Last year was year 1 and we did 1, 2, and 4. We did 5 the last 2 weeks of school...It was sooooo tough!
Matific is a great tool! It aligns with our textbook and standards
It's a little better this year. Although still way short...
What areas does she need support? How can we help?
Have you checked out It's a great student-centered resource!
Read it this fall! ❤️d it! Also check out Cathy Fosnot's work.
Remember to model, model, model. They do not come pre-wired knowing what to do :-)
That's why we skipped 3. We were afraid we'd never teach place value...
I agree although I haven't done much of number talks lately... I should get back. https://t.co/fkFSg2Szok
daily number talks REALLY help esp with explaining their thinking
We just use the supplement Number Corner. Time consuming but very beneficial. Can be hard to follow
Touch math for coins is awsome!
Exactly. It didn't have Singapore math but I called and they added it. Now I can assign tasks. https://t.co/EKmnDLgP4v
Matific is a great tool! It aligns with our textbook and standards
I use number strings to build fluency with numbers and teach strategies. Anyone else use them?
Totally agree, although I find myself making up ideas. "Last year I had a Ss say..."
we still teach money because it's in our curriculum
Daily number talks are SO important. Doesn’t need 2 be long, just focused to get students thinking/talking https://t.co/pol7542hRg
daily number talks REALLY help esp with explaining their thinking
Number strings? Tell us more! https://t.co/iNmDB6C6TG
I use number strings to build fluency with numbers and teach strategies. Anyone else use them?
I'm very discouraged with the timing, but hopeful this is a good learning experience.
When I was teaching math, I did! Great for visual and then talking about it!
feel free to come by! is an amazing math teacher, I recommend watching her!
YES! It also helps reinforce the mathematical practices (if you're CCSS)
My students can't wait to use it. Indoor recess everybody wants to play.
lower on 1st test of oral counting & M-COMP. Teacher suggested supporting with games at home. Particular suggestions?
is an amazing Maths teaching tool that allows teachers to target children specific needs in a focused way.
no. So ss will record what they are seeing? Great idea!
Number Corner? IDifferent pattern each month. Place Value, writing equations, collecting various things
unfortunately denial doesn't work for me. Also take class for a Digital certificate. lesson plans and report cards Eek!
Goodness, I did everyday math @ my old district. We have Math In Focus! Oops!
In 5 years Ss could be amazing. But will it be around in 5 years? And what of the Ss who quit in the meantime?
Definitely try it. Your Ss will love it. We started by using it whole group and then moved to individual.
and I tie my account to my website and parents can go on. see and hear how the kids learn and its a win win!
LOVED Everyday Math! Now we have GO! Math... Sigh...
Dot on coin for every 5 cents. Touch and count by 5s. Biggest thing is knowing how much each coin is worth https://t.co/jAvOlG30q4
3+7. Kids put thumb up when know answer. Call on S and ask how they solve. Call on someone else for another way. Etc
Do you do a lesson per day?
Touch Math for coins- We say "DinkyDime", "No Neck Nickel" and "Big Kahuna Quarter" to help us remember
She is!! I was able to observe the other day. if you get a chance you should go! WOW! https://t.co/u9x1Hh3HVp
feel free to come by! is an amazing math teacher, I recommend watching her!
have GoMath as well. Glad we can use it as resource and pull to meet st needs
I love touch math, but have never seen it used for money! I will look into it!
I LOVE it! Sharing this one with my teachers!! :)
wow! I have never heard of such a test... Are they just saying the numbers or reading?
is a tool that compliments the c/room practice. I'm in Syd and I can tell you the impact it has here is huge.
I do feel she would do better if she had more time.
We are chatting math here at any chance you can stick around?
I really like using literature that incorporates math. Like counting books. More relaxed.
thx for the reminder. I'd started following it but hadn't checked the site out.
I also really like the lesson plans that go with the units. https://t.co/rh0DpQamyr
is an amazing Maths teaching tool that allows teachers to target children specific needs in a focused way.
Sure! I'll pop in for a little bit!
we love bump! Class favorite!
never heard of it! Would you mind sharing what it is?
thx. She often skips and it's hard to tell if it's true mistakes or lack of focus. She can be a character. ;)
Ive never heard of this, can you tell me more?
We use for coins too. Love the singing and moving. https://t.co/bLakIAF2La
Touch Math for coins- We say "DinkyDime", "No Neck Nickel" and "Big Kahuna Quarter" to help us remember
I have student accounts created, does the site pre-assess them?
l/plans are made by tchrs like me and checked by our content team. We have educational professors that check everything
she's getting math support on the side. Not sure what the person's position is.
Absolutely! I can email it if you like. I've got a bunch of different versions.
I need to check this out!
she may take after me. I took my time!
ldegroot@spiritlakesdc.org thanks!
Hi all! Jumping in a bit late!
Hey! Another familiar face!
I love this idea! Using it tomorrow!!!
thanks -- hadn't heard of that.
Hi Donna! Happy to see you here!
my questions is... what to do w ss who flips numbers. 25, 52/ 13/31
YAY! I was just on your site looking at the resources. Always a go to.
Hi Donna! WElcome! Thanks for the awesome Make 10 freebie this week. Very timely for my class!
This has a Ontario curriculum focus, but still has good ideas/strategies that could work for u https://t.co/vUvlB8dN4P
hi buddy! I've missed you!
Always nice when the timing is right!
I really feel like I'm missing out on something. Please share more.
Do you know how to play bump?
I love bump! I haven't done that enough this year. Guilty of going one to one and forgetting some great hands on games.
I don't but I just clicked on the the link. I'll check it out.
I have a S who still can't read or write out of order. He can write 1-100, but not a 41. Help!
You are welcome. I like she uses linking cubes. Never thought of that. :)
Our firsties have a math binder and each month they learn 6 new games .. bump was last month and returning in April!
What if you put sticky notes around the house with numbers and she had to find and put in order?
I find that as well! Hard to balance all the tools/strategies
your kiddos will love it!
Tell me more about your math binder. https://t.co/SJF2N3HUSi
Our firsties have a math binder and each month they learn 6 new games .. bump was last month and returning in April!
Just takes time. Determine which numbers they get stuck on and continue to show them the number in isolation.
I can't wait to try it out.
me too! Think my kids will love it!
It is somewhat a memorization thing, but will also improve as they understand more about how are composed.
He is stuck on all. Can't find a pattern. :( I will start with teens and move on up.
thx! So glad I asked teachers. Where in Ontario are you? We know a teacher in Brantford area.
I need to check this out & tell my teaching partner! Thanks for the tip!
I was hoping place value unit would help, but it's made it more obvious that he is confused.
Thanks! I am going to send this out to my sts so they can start playing!
Oh! I thought it was just a few. Yes, definitely work in chunks.
Maybe do more concrete with building numbers first. https://t.co/n8grBlk2Pz
He is stuck on all. Can't find a pattern. :( I will start with teens and move on up.
binder also includes 100s chart, games in sleeves and tic-tac-toe board for Seesaw task cards! Love the organization
So each student has a binder?
You’ve come to the right place at the right time! ;) In Waterloo Region. Brantford is pretty much right next door.
What do sts have in math binder
Keep him with smaller numbers and provide lots of hands-on practice for PV.
Agreed. That's what we are doing w/place value, but what he says and writes down don't match.
However, policymakers also believe that anything worthy of further education.
Do these binders go home as well or just to use at school? https://t.co/kj2SsdMuvf
binder also includes 100s chart, games in sleeves and tic-tac-toe board for Seesaw task cards! Love the organization
Use lots of different representations--linking cubes, ten frames, bean sticks, etc.
of course! Did you see the basic version she tweeted out?
is that same for kids who flip numbers?
For example, S can visually read 23 base ten blocks and make 23 with blocks, but writes 20.
Ah! Didn't put a reminder for ; therefore, I'm late. Natalie from La! Coach this year, 1st grade next year https://t.co/b9c2zKEmD3
I know the struggle. Sometimes they copy routine and still lack understanding. https://t.co/fI1sIX3bSU
For example, S can visually read 23 base ten blocks and make 23 with blocks, but writes 20.
We did lot w/building numbers w/10s and 1s using cubes to physically connect. We'd chant, "Tens & ones" to remember order
I use binders, too. Tally Mark, count days, fill in 10 frame, weather and place value each day.
cool! My wife spent early childhood in Brantford and is still connected with her childhood friend (the T) & family.
I like adding the games to the binders!
I used to use it as a "calendar", but moved away from that and use it more as an organizational tool
Huh, writing the number right after building it? Like he builds it and then writes it wrong?
with a reward at the end, I presume? Cool idea.
We incorporate all of that in Calendar Math. That covers a lot of info
makes it super easy .. I'm keeping the games for next year and then I don't have to reprint!
What about a tens and ones table to help write 23 like the ways the base ten blocks would be laid out?
Getting info from OT on strategies. She recommends visual pursuits. Will share when get info
I truly believe most reversals are developmental and will disappear on their own.
has the calendar binder pages I use on her site. I added ten frame
I wonder about that too. They lack of left to right directionality. They may write number 21 right, but 1 first then 2.
Thanks for all the great idea Is this a weekly chat? Trying to get more involved!
will do! Yeah, we're New England Yankees with a touch of Canadian blood. 🙂
did you prep these at the beginning of the year?
That would be awesome! Thanks! https://t.co/mRUlextQSz
Getting info from OT on strategies. She recommends visual pursuits. Will share when get info
I have a S that is doing that. Working with the base 10 blocks and mat is helping. https://t.co/anlXTcqBil
I wonder about that too. They lack of left to right directionality. They may write number 21 right, but 1 first then 2.
S was reading a number (41) that was already written. He knew the 4 meant 40, but didn't know how to read the 1.
It is weekly. Always great info. I'm glad you made it tonight. https://t.co/GBHowId8bU
Thanks for all the great idea Is this a weekly chat? Trying to get more involved!
If they can count accurately with base ten blocks, I think the understanding is there.
Right. Or a sentence frame to fill in ____ tens ____ ones makes _____
Yeah. I do believe I have to go back to more concrete.
That's what we are trying now.
I would think you keep trying different tools, include ten frames and get them to understanding in chunks. https://t.co/FjE30eacsE
Huh, writing the number right after building it? Like he builds it and then writes it wrong?
That's what I had to do for these kiddos. They aren't ready for abstract "YET". :) https://t.co/eMQ1WPY1CI
Yeah. I do believe I have to go back to more concrete.
Keep in mind that base 10 blocks are still pretty abstract. Try linking cubes or ten frames.
hard for parents to know the difference!
we do, too! Calendar goes fast now that the kiddos understand!
Thanks everyone for the chat. I'm back to report cards and dinner! Take care and have a great week!
Thanks! Ill try to join next week to! gotta run & get some other work done now! :)
I like the linking cube idea for one of my Ss. I think that will really help. Thanks.
THat's the visual spatial aspect that our OT is telling me about. What I've heard she recommends is fascintating.
thanks for the great ideas tonight!
but they get confused between 12 and 21. If the number is shown w base 10 blocks, they can count. Half way there:)
I think you'll love it! Kiddos will, too!
Right brain/left brain kind of stuff. :-)
10 frame cards work? https://t.co/gwvUSTVhvH
Keep in mind that base 10 blocks are still pretty abstract. Try linking cubes or ten frames.
love the idea of having a calendar binder. Will be creating one for next yr
Do you have an onsite OT?
using 10 frames from you for counting days in school. Sts made lots of links to that as we study larger numbers
math exp. uses the phrase 10's and extra ones. I don't have Ss who rev. teen # this yr.!
OT stuff fascinates me. I seriously thought about going into the field once. One particular boy is left handed also.
Silly ? how do you store?
I really like those. Keeps the color the same. That would help make the connection. Thanks.
ex. 16 is one 10 and 6 extra ones.
Yea!! I always love hearing about the positive that's happening in classrooms!
Maybe I could see one on your blog? Please. https://t.co/BXhiGcLMPo
kiddos also have a pencil pouch in binder - contains whiteboard marker, pencil, eraser, and cubes
Us too! Decomposing is fun with large numbers:) https://t.co/hAl0TfA6sS
using 10 frames from you for counting days in school. Sts made lots of links to that as we study larger numbers
Very cool! Will look into making those for next year.
I have 7 left handed students this year. Luckily my teaching partner last year is left handed. VERY helpful
You are giving them a huge gift for 2nd grade doing lots with making ten and using frames!
1st yr using in that manner & I am pleased w/ connections. Thanks for all the great posts on your blog!
I completely agree! A strong understanding of place value is essential for 2nd grade!
We use calendar, base 10s, coins, bead strings: kids always talk about # of 10s & ones- 10 and 2 more
so glad we just had the teacher conference bc we talked 10-frames. Know what you're saying!
I have parents that ? why so much work on making 10 and using frames. Build that number sense!
