We have so much access to technology today! Do you use it? If not, what's getting in your way?
-
A1: something to write with and something to write on
-
A good scientific calculator and the knowledge of how to use it plays a key role in my Algebra I classroom.
-
I find a lot of teachers w whom I work use the tools but in ways that seem analog
-
-
. Having the knowledge to use it is the key, for sure! It's not always easy.
-
In other words, they don't harness the full potential of the tech tool
-
. Do you ever add technology into this mix? Always paper and pencil?
-
A1: the tool isn't as important as the knowledge and skills required to use it well. Takes time, focus, and purpose.
-
. So interesting, isn't it? Technology is only as good as the way in which we use it.
-
A1 I think is not which tool, but how engaged and knowledgeable you and your ss are about it
-
I'm a professional developer - but yes, I use things like Padlet and TodaysMeet even w Ts in sessions
-
talented teachers and specialists (slp, psychologists, soc worker).
-
And what the desired end result is
-
Indeed, much like textbooks and other resources!
-
. You're spot on. Rolling out a new tool, in whatever form, is an event! Have you found any powerful ways to do this?
-
I agree. The Ss are so immersed in tech, the key is engagement.
-
hopefully the tech opens up new possibilities for learners (teachers incl.)
-
You don't have to be completely knowledgeable to try tech. Take the Ss on the journey with you. They love it!
-
That is so true...it should enhance not substitute or just entertain
-
-
A1: Using tech to innovate and not replicate paper tasks is an key. So purpose is essential!
-
A1: an open mind and a willingness to grow their brains in new things like learning a new program, not just a babysitter.
-
I think the key is the cognition being put toward a learning goal. Sometimes engagement is surface level
-
-
-
I totally agree with the engagement piece. This is the hardest part sometimes!
-
I use reflector when I intro a new app on the iPad to my students. Model first always
-
Or activity or "busyness" looks like cognitive engagement but isn't
-
Joining in a bit late! Becky from Baltimore, MD :)
-
. Love this thought. Digging deep with grit and perseverance!
-
depends on the Ss - ex. gr 4 Ss have 1-1 iPads. Ts stick with a few powerful apps at first, but let students explore.
-
I love that you are using technology but remembering the REASON behind it! :)
-
. You help your scholars do this every day in your classroom, Ms. McNelly! Such talent!
-
agree, without reflexion on the subject at hand technology is just another tool
-
Q2 coming up in a moment!
-
Q2 coming up in a moment!
-
-
-
iPads are education tools for Ss only if used not as a replacement and if teaching/assessments/"accountability stays the same
-
Involve campus educators in the planning of professional development, what do they perceive as their challenges?
-
A2: Empower them to get professional credit for the development they choose to do on their own.
-
A2: Edcamps. the (un)conference!
-
A2: Ask staff what they want to learn..provide choices..gather feedback & use it to plan future PD's Give time to practice
-
Q2. Our district conducts polls and also offers lots of PD opportunities in many areas taught by other Ts.
-
A2: Now that's a HUGE question! Stop "drive-by" PD. Leaders must listen to Ts about their needs/
-
Depends on the topic one is teaching
-
, differentiate PD for staff and utilize the expertise of the staff members. So powerful to learn from our colleagues.
-
think... Have there been recent issues on campus that shed light on areas where professional development is needed?
-
A1 Using available tech in the classroom to get Ss involved with their own devices if possible with a well planned activity
-
A2: Teach meaningful reflection for each staff member and ask for input on different areas of growth in culture and academics
-
Q2: PD through online modules allows for a great deal of differentiation. Collaborative groups can still be a part!
-
A2: Shouldn't it reflect what we expect to see in the classroom? No such thing as "average"
-
-
I think this is key - teachers, like students, learn more deeply when given agency. https://t.co/gYD3wo8ATt
-
-
A2: Empower them to get professional credit for the development they choose to do on their own.
-
If your planning PD for everyone you're doing it wrong ... PD should be individualized ... a la cart the learning.
-
. Differentiation is for the adults, too! Love it!
-
Time to practice is such a big piece, but I think that it is often missing!
-
Practice w feedback is key. As a PD provider - Ts do better if I'm invited to support after the initial seminar
-
A2: Coaching is the new PD for every subject area! "Show me and I will never forget"
-
I find a very few leaders that do this. Sad.
-
A2 Allow teachers to be exposed to methods, technologies, conferences, tools, etc. And let them design!
-
Give a needs assessment, ask them what they need to improve on, then look for really good materials. https://t.co/dZkCYTSMzA
-
Amazing perspective! https://t.co/bQGPE2LlVO
-
-
If your planning PD for everyone you're doing it wrong ... PD should be individualized ... a la cart the learning.
-
this & an opportunity to work on personal weak points. We're not all the same
-
True! Show me, and be there with me!
-
A2 by providing PD that the T wants and allows them to deliver what is necessary.
-
. Love it, Rickie! Modeling our expectations in everything we do is key.
-
If your PD doesn't inspire teachers into action, it was a bad PD ... I won't sugarcoat it
-
A2: choice & differentiation of content, mode, expectations. Make prof learning meaningful & personal. Ask Ts what they need!
-
you two are awesome examples of this! I'm always learning from you both
-
Most of my PD work is still 100 Ts crammed into a lecture hall. Not the best for transfer.
-
-
-
PD is about learning opportunities ... are you creating opportunities or just checking boxes?
-
I just arrived at - excited to jump in! PD should be responsive and targeted, just like T feedback to Ss - make it meaningful
-
A2: Plan less! The unconference system made popular through shows the power of developing ad lib PD w real impact
-
When it's non evaluative and authentic coaching can be very effective PD! https://t.co/iTysQ1x02A
-
-
! Yes. Coaching and Mentoring.
-
. That has to be tough! Wonder if you can get them discussing and reflecting?
-
-
A2 Example: For me to deliver I need a first aid qual - therefore need time & support to attain this
-
Lg PD sessions rarely effective but of course I use tons of collaboration, tech tools, etc.
-
Hello everyone!! Jenna, Lake County, EdTech/STEM Specialist - late to the party!!
-
. Never enough time! How can we use technology to make more of it?
-
Real-time feedback if communicated properly, is better than any PD.
-
And use reflective writing!
-
-
A2: PD needs to model classroom best prac. If you don't want it done with s's don't do it with teachers! https://t.co/fzbQ2pZXiw
-
-
-
-
Appropriate that today was working on site Prof Learning for 16-17. Reworking to do - less planning, more connecting
-
I'll be heading to Saturday w
-
. Yes! The power of reflection! So important! Almost as important as the follow-up.
-
A2. PD will be meaningful when teacher's have voice and choice, follow through opportunities, recognition and feedback :)
-
But can also be a form of PD. If the leaders know how to do it w outside experts, can be effective
-
good PD can be a follow up to real-time feedback. ID what needs work, and work on it
-
Attendees must be aware of the program goals/expectations before they signup. Fixed midsets not welcome. https://t.co/6OUznrefCr
-
-
Lg PD sessions rarely effective but of course I use tons of collaboration, tech tools, etc.
-
Right on! :) PD should model good teaching, period.
-
yes, after teachers have been exposed to ideas we go thru a Design Thinking process to help them produce a prototype
-
Wonderful point, it can be integrated seamlessly into continuous improvement
-
In my ex to achieve a first aid qual attendance on the course is mandatory Cannot do distance learning via tech
-
. What do you use to deliver real time feedback? This is great!
-
Real Time Feedback - Google forms, flubaroo, quizzizz, quizlet, etc.
-
How do you combat those fixed mindsets?
-
Hi.
Will from Markham, ON Canada. I am a Gr 6 T and TED Ed club leader.
-
A1: An LMS/Student Portfolio interaction is key. I achieve this via as my LMS and as my Portfolio
-
Let's flip the tables ... teachers, when you show up for PD leave your negative attitude and your grading in your classroom.
-
reflecting on ideas, best practices& strategies work wonders for our Lg PD
-
Yes when it's relevant it makes sense! https://t.co/enr6rPxQlC
-
-
good PD can be a follow up to real-time feedback. ID what needs work, and work on it
-
we know this doesn't do well w/Ss, so why do we do this Ts? Most PD I've had is poor pedagogy
-
How do you help teachers to adopt this approach?
-
Time May be there is if PD is refined to support ind T needs and not generic all must attend style PD
-
A2 Just as voice and choice works in class, shld be used for PD.
-
-
-
-
just discussing ideas works wonders
-
Sum eval at the end on Socrative gives presenter and PD team immediate feedback
-
Q3 How do you use technology to effectively differentiate instruction and reach every child? https://t.co/NB8AuCugPa
-
I'm still disappointed that leaders think the get more for $ w large-scale PD
-
Get early adopters first. FOMO, craft easy to digest hands-on PD delivered in safe/encouraging space. https://t.co/q4pnBRMKWS
-
-
How do you combat those fixed mindsets?
-
Good PD. Consolidated obs that inform Ts what happens in the classroom, interventions needed.
-
-
idea exchange w/peers has been my fav, most productive PD
-
A2: PD for teachers by teachers. Flipped learning for more in depth conversations. Job embedded practice, feedback and reflection
-
A2. Plan professional development? Hell, I'ld be happy if it would have a line in the budget!
-
ensure PD is specific to ind T needs & don’t waste time having mandatory fit all type PD
-
With my Ss I use formative As using lots of & using to reflect https://t.co/yC5LnPCuIJ
-
-
. What do you use to deliver real time feedback? This is great!
-
. Tell us more about this! What does it look like?
-
A3: Provide different levels of support in terms of processes/expectations/content in centers with my 1st grade spec ed Ss.
-
Any formative assessment tool that is not evaluative.
-
A3: suite is great for assigning and feedback - is awesome for discussion boards and peer review
-
A3 I have instructional videos for students to watch when they return from being absent. It is a good way to catch them up.
-
A3 Using conversations in google classroom to give feedback allows me to reach each one in my class
-
. I'm in the special education world too. Favorite apps/tools to do this with?
-
Using laptops/ipads. Forgot that part. :) https://t.co/TK9FuPEo4F
-
-
A3: Provide different levels of support in terms of processes/expectations/content in centers with my 1st grade spec ed Ss.
-
A3:Utilizing S choice in creating artifacts 2 prove mastery of a benchmark takes on whole new levels w tech! Ts, give up control!
-
Agree & this PD is usually carried out via the virtual environment & T feels isolated 1/2
-
QR codes are easy to do with different links!
-
Blendspace is my personal favorite! Youtube as well. How about you?
-
-
that's tough some have been burned for so long ... at some point we, as teachers, have to change our attitude,
-
A3. By giving every student the same level of rigor, but tools can scaffold the experience - YouTube Playlists build background
-
2/2 isolated because there is no chance of human interaction - interface is via the computer
-
another way is individualized flipped lessons on !
-
. Love Blendspace! I also find really useful ways to use ThingLink!
-
A3 Every item in a class can be used in the tech puzzle. Allow Ss to try all & gravitate to their faves. https://t.co/oa445ziUko
-
-
Q3 How do you use technology to effectively differentiate instruction and reach every child? https://t.co/NB8AuCugPa
-
A3: low entry, high ceiling -- the tool should be accessible by all learners, but have great potential for extension
-
I have never heard of that before. Checking it out ASAP! Thank you!! :)
-
How about we model "inquiry" and have teachers explore their areas of interest or gaps in learning? Walk the walk.
-
A:3 Using digital Lit resources like allows me to change the reading level giving all Ss access https://t.co/19mNw0Jytm
-
-
Q3 How do you use technology to effectively differentiate instruction and reach every child? https://t.co/NB8AuCugPa
-
Love love love! https://t.co/DyD5dxrMl1
-
-
A2: PD for teachers by teachers. Flipped learning for more in depth conversations. Job embedded practice, feedback and reflection
-
-
agree---I've been LOVING YouTube Playlists for my Kinders to build 3D Shape knowledge during math!
-
Yes!! So simple and so powerful!
-
I love the idea of the "tech puzzle" - tech as the tool and not the goal
-
Agree use skills audit / plus T personal needs & not repeating generic PD exercises to frequently
-
Do you find it difficult to juggle multiple tech tools while trying to reach and teach every learner?
-
Right. Requiring all Ts to attend a PD w/o real reason, or planning is a waste of time and resources. https://t.co/O9EmJjBqBh
-
-
ensure PD is specific to ind T needs & don’t waste time having mandatory fit all type PD
-
. Sometimes great ideas come when we least expect it!
-
A3: provide choice to students as to which device, app, resource to use. They know more than us! https://t.co/GoD4noF87l
-
-
Q3 How do you use technology to effectively differentiate instruction and reach every child? https://t.co/NB8AuCugPa
-
A3: student chosen products for pbl - Ss teach each other technology when I give choice. They differentiate themselves!
-
A3 with text to speech add ons allows Ss to hv text read aloud to them. Game changer for Ss with reading disabilities
-
it doesn't have to be a juggling act - provide options, allow Ss to gravitate toward what works for them
-
also important to note, we don't have textbooks. So sharing of resources (especially free ones) is key! A2
-
. is a great way to differentiate at a high interest level for scholars at different levels!
-
. I agree with you Shari! Choice is powerful for learners.
-
Loving too! https://t.co/Qt8wLzZoWT
-
-
. is a great way to differentiate at a high interest level for scholars at different levels!
-
Allow students to explore & take risks with tech. Especially areas that we may not be comfortable. Let's learn from our students.
-
some teachers still laugh when I tell them "I learned it from YouTube." It's a great resource
-
-
-
Absolutely! Risk-taking should certainly extend into the realm of tech https://t.co/CL0YqmMJUi
-
-
Allow students to explore & take risks with tech. Especially areas that we may not be comfortable. Let's learn from our students.
-
A3: supports personalized learning w/choice in topic, process, output. Ts make the environment, tech is the not average tool
-
I allow them to use what they feel comfortable with (as long as they can explain it to me), worth it!
-
I agree . Ss are digital natives! So much to learn from them and we can learn a lot from our mistakes, too!
-
it also shows a lack of seriousness which Ts absorb & tune out
-
is awesome! It's just as interesting for adults!
-
A1: tools are less important than attitudes and mindsets. Give me a library and basic supplies with positive attitudes & effort
-
that additional layer of requiring explanation is great!
-
A3 I'm no expert on it, but flipping the class allows advanced Ss to accelerate but gives time for intervention as well.
-
Darn tootin` https://t.co/6EbfBhzUAg
-
-
some teachers still laugh when I tell them "I learned it from YouTube." It's a great resource
-
- I just learned about by watching the feed from - go Digital PLN!
-
after all, concepts are not tied to tools, take risks! Love it!
-
-
-
A3: Must Do/May Do options for choice in individualized learning. Using google to create individual schedules and flipping
-
A2 Focus more on effective communication with students' personalities. Get more bees with honey. https://t.co/N8W4IWmrjY
-
once my laptop wouldn't sync with a projector. I had to call tech support, my students!
-
“: Wrapping up Q3, on to Q4” join in !
-
-
-
Teachers need to show more initiative in getting it ourselves ... can't expect it to be given to us .
-
I love it!! My 1st graders taught me to use my first smartphone!! :)
-
A3 some of these new intelligence-based learning software programs do the same so cld have blended learning.
-
A3 Absolutely variety is key & use cross platforms to reach out to all Ss instead of clunky VLE like Moodle 1/2
-
. I hear you, but it's our job to also prepare Ss to use 21st century skills & tools effectively too, no?
-
A4. you can assign different lessons to different ss, the varied functionality allows for a deeper experience for some
-
-
Soft skills are almost MORE important in the digital age!
-
I'm in a large district 95K students ... 9k staff/teachers ... individualization not going to happen.
-
Love I'm not 100% flipped but I love doing it when I can! On demand learning! https://t.co/3gWxuvWNQO
-
-
A3 I'm no expert on it, but flipping the class allows advanced Ss to accelerate but gives time for intervention as well.
-
Like this, would love suggestions pertaining to math PD. Need to do more choice with Ts like we do with Ss.
-
The things that our students can teach us! :) https://t.co/ALAxYfRCBm
-
-
once my laptop wouldn't sync with a projector. I had to call tech support, my students!
-
2/2 A3 cross platforms e.g. etc..
-
I feel like our district does pretty good with this. I need to brainstorm this more.
-
A4: It allows customizable, flipped lessons to take flight with the help of EVERY and ALL videos on the Internet! Great source!
-
A T friend told me in her old district staff signed up to teach PD and when 5 Ts signed up the class was on. I LOVE this!
-
A4: has amazing resources to offer Ss and Ts. Short video instructions, going deeper options and more..rewind :-)
-
! Just, I LOVE the flipped method! So much more buy-in & changed the role of the T to a collaborative prtner
-
. Yes, you are right, Amy!
-
My district did something similar. It was incredibly powerful! So much ownership and relevance.
-
So true!! REWIND = self-paced reinstruction!!!
-
What grade level? Message me..would love to discuss math PD
-
A4 the videos tie in well for flipped learning. I've used them in the past for this. Can tie in questioning at different levels
-
-
Continue providing us with Ss-friendly videos and PDs with teachers on how to make effective videos. https://t.co/FG4inebCzJ
-
A4: I just showed a TedEd video today! HS Ss need short and relevant. Ted talk is on my bucket list!
-
This is what makes using so awesome during the instructional day. https://t.co/cR6XNfwd26
-
-
A3 I'm no expert on it, but flipping the class allows advanced Ss to accelerate but gives time for intervention as well.
-
All revolved around expertise. If a T was skilled in an important area, they signed up/spread the knowledge!
-
was great! Hv to go look but forward to networking w some new Ts frm the chat! Thx
-
A4: Engagement - student choice - relate to what students think is important - stay up to date with authentic literacy
-
-
-
. Love the "if they can explain it to me" caveat.
-
A4: would love to start using videos more with my Ss, need to find more Kinder friendly videos, can't wait to start lookin!
-
Oh boooo! I was teaching so missed
-
Thanks for the inspiring ideas ! Excited for next week!
-
, it is amazing how much we learn as teachers, and when Ss realize this MAGIC!
-
-
-
A4 Is there any subject matter on ? on
-
-
. Thanks for your awesome engagement, Rebecca!
-
I create my own videos for my class using Explain Everything. You add draw, add text, shapes, pictures etc.
-
It´s all about the journey...
-
I've been a consultant for 10+ yrs. Have seen a couple of times Ss included! They need to be!
-
-
Imagine the smartphone, IPad, & laptop will be the worst tech our students will ever know. https://t.co/rg5iVfHU02
-
-
I love it!! My 1st graders taught me to use my first smartphone!! :)
-
, yup, my 15yo nephew is my IT go to guy, they get smarter every day :)
-
we use design thinking sessions with ss, works great
-
Thank you to the AMAZING for hosting this inspiring conversation with tonight!
-
Thanks for hosting tonight’s really enjoyable collaboration
