#Kinderchat, glue, glitter, gogurt, bringing daily joy to twitter. Find us Mondays, 9 pm EST and 8:30PM London time when we talk all things Early Years!
Hello and welcome to #kinderchat! My name is Megan and I will be your chat facilitator tonight. I am an ECE Site Director at a PK-8th grade school and am from Chicago.
Hi everyone! My name is Kenzie and I am a student at UW-Platteville in Wisconsin! I am a senior studying elementary education and this is going to be my first ever tweetchat, I am excited to participate! #kinderchat#uwpsoe4020
I think a dramatic play area is so important for development amongst other children, especially in young-aged classrooms. It helps fuel social skills and cognitive development. #kinderchat
As a reminder, tonight’s #kinderchat is based on this article (https://t.co/F3GMrDzCY1) where we will be discussing the educator’s role in pushing for equity.
My name is Tonya and I am a student I am living in Clarksville Tn but from Oklahoma. Today I turned in every assignment I had due.. I am so relieved.
#Kinderchat
I believe that a dramatic play area catches the students attention more and it is more likely that the kids will want to learn when there is a dramatic play area that has educational aspects incorporated into it. #Kinderchat#edit2000fa18
kimberly from fl. isd for equity and crt. on my pc with tweetdeck bc im in 2 chats right now and its great! but to be quick i didnt use caps and punctuation #kinderchat
Welp. Got my first "how in the world did I get that scratch when I don't remember even getting it" while working with kids this evening. I'm sure it's the first of very many! 😂😭😂😭😂😭😂😭 #LoveThemThough ☺️☺️☺️☺️
Hi everyone, I'm Abigail McCormick! I'm a student studying Early Childhood Education at Cedarville University. I'm from around Detroit, Michigan, and my good thing is that I got to have some me time! #Kinderchat#EDUC2100
Hi, I’m Yana. I am a student at Apsu majoring in early childhood education. I am from Nashville, Tennessee. One good thing that happened today was that was that it was my last day for certain classes. I am very excited for Christmas and to spend time with family. #kinderchat
#kinderchat one good thing-
My 6 y.o son has started recognizing words in the holiday books we have been reading. I am also his Teacher so 2x psyched for him.
Amy here - principal of the ECE division of a french immersion priv school in The Canada. One good thing today: one of my most cautious gr 1s asked me a question entirely in French! #kinderchat
#kinderchat My name is Callye Ann Chastain, I attend the University of Georgia, and I am from LaGrange Georgia. One good thing that happened today was that the weather was pretty amazing.
One of the good things that happened today was one of our young 3 year olds who is currently non verbal called his teacher “mama”! Everyone was so happy! #kinderchat
Since there are so many new faces tonight; I’m going to tell you a bit on how our community’s chats are loosely structured. We start with greetings and then I’ll start to introduce a few discussion prompts. Respond to those and to each other. Then we will wrap up. #kinderchat
Prompt 1: The article brings up 10 ways that educators can act for equity. Is there a practice, of the 10, that your school is doing already? Please share what it is and how your school is engaging in the practice. #kinderchat
1. My role is new to my district this year. My actual title: Instructional Staff Developer for Equity and Culturally Relevant Teaching. So that article is right up my alley of supporting Ts. But, # 1 it's a mindset, a continual journey #kinderchat
OMG. A few yrs ago, we had a little guy who was selectively mute at school. The day he finally spoke, his teacher and I both cried, but had to pretend to be cool! #kinderchat
Personally, I think that my school is working towards embracing immigrant students and their culture. We have over 35 languages spoken at our school and representation from so many more countries. #kinderchat
That’s interesting that your district has this specific of a role. What a great opportunity to push for equity for all students and families. Are you enjoying it? #kinderchat
A1: I am still in college, but I love the idea of adapting to the students and teaching the way they learn. All students are different and the teacher should differentiate their instruction to meet the needs of the students. The classroom should be student-centered! #Kinderchat
At the University of Georgia teachers do such an amazing job at explaining what it takes to succeed. In the syllabus there is clear instruction as to how you can come out with the best grade in that particular class. #kinderchat
I think the schools I have worked with really strive to embrace immigrant/minority students and their culture by making them feel included and by educating other students of different cultures and backgrounds. #kinderchat
#Kinderchat#EDUC2100 A1: I know in a lot of my college courses we've been talking a lot about making sure to include a wide variety of cultural literature, and history so that students can identify with what they're learning and feel included in the learning process!
#Kinderchat We have an ongoing conversation in the research world about teachers reading literacy research. How do the EC and Kinder teachers out there engage with literacy research?
Answer 1: At the school I have been observing in they have set up a file system that allows each child to be in charge of their work. This goes along with number 4 in the article PROVIDE STUDENTS CLEAR GUIDANCE ON WHAT IT TAKES TO SUCCEED. #Kinderchat
I think the schools I have worked with really strive to embrace immigrant/minority students and their culture by making them feel included and by educating other students of different cultures and backgrounds. #kinderchat
This is something that I am very interested in as a future teacher! I want to be able to help as many students as I can, and I'm so interested to see how I can apply that and integrate it into my teaching! #Kinderchat#EDUC2100
A1: I believe that the schools i have worked with have done a good job of incorperating different cultures into different activities, and have done a good job creating a sense of equity #kinderchat#edit2000fa18
my school is writing new goals & vision this yr. We are focused on parent/community partnerships, along with involving Ss in their education & setting goals with them. #kinderchat
I think my school is always striving to be better at #3. We are an intl' school, and always working to be more mindful about what that means. #kinderchat
Wow! That’s amazing how many languages are spoken at one school it would be very challenging I feel if those cultures weren’t also embraced to enhance the community. #kinderchat
I think that is amazing. I think all schools should try to do that. When I was in school we only had one language ever spoken in our school. Being adopted from Russia when I was younger, having to learn English was a big struggle for me so that would of helped me. #kinderchat
While I am still learning, a lot of my classes discuss how we should engage in culturally relevant pedagogy in the classroom. In order to benefit our students the most, we must relate curriculum to them and incorporate different cultures into the classroom. #kinderchat
Being available to "chat" via text, email, phone, face2face; weekly newsletters, invitations to come in to school; assemblies, celebrations at end of unit of inquiry; flexible scheduling of mtgs #kinderchat
I have built a binder with our kinder goals and the Ss personal goals and they build their plan each day on what centers to work on that will help hit their academic and personal goals. They are getting good, #kinderchat
Answer 1: At the school I have been observing in they have set up a file system that allows each child to be in charge of their work. This goes along with number 4 in the article PROVIDE STUDENTS CLEAR GUIDANCE ON WHAT IT TAKES TO SUCCEED. #Kinderchat
A1: The school I am in right now does a great job at number 10! We are really working on teaching the way that students learn, instead of just expecting them to learn how we teach. #kinderchat
I have also been studying those methods in my college courses. If students can relate what they are learning to themselves, I believe they will be more engaged! #Kinderchat
A2: Parent partnership is huge and now we have wonderful technology like SeeSaw and other apps that allows more communication between educator and parents. #kinderchat
It's definitely something that requires a lot of thought and planning! It's great that your school is working to be mindful and intentional! #Kinderchat#EDUC2100
A1 Parenrs are included in all aspects of school life - meetings to explain curriculum, participate in school outreach, class projects tomshare their interests, support in making sure we are meeting social and academic weds of their kids #kinderchat
A2: I would like to see more practice in teaching students more than one way to learn how to solve a problem and allow them to choose which way is easier for them. #kinderchat
For prompt, my math class in college is really preparing me to see different ways on how to teach math so students have different ideas on how to solve math. #kinderchat
I agree! I think so many students would benefit from options. We say that they all learn differently so it would make sense that they process and get to the conclusion differently as well! #kinderchat
As an administrator, I am working to challenge the staff to think mindfully about number 6. Do our goals for how we hope the children will act and engage with instruction align to the ways we are doing discipline. #kinderchat
I would like to see #9. I feel like our schools do not get enough help. If we could get more partnerships to help with the students it would help the schools so much.
#Kinderchat
I think this idea is great. Not every student learns the same way. We need to give them a few different ways to achieve the same goal and let them find which way is best for the to achieve it.
#kinderchat
It’s important to keep in mind as we are discussing equity, that we need to reflect on own cultural lens & the implicit biases that stem from our world view. How do we respond when our lens is in conflict with a family’s lens? How do we work together for common goal #kinderchat
A2: Seen from observations number 10 on the list I would have loved to see more of the teacher setting aside her beautiful lesson for the couple of students that couldn’t understand and start over teaching them in another way with maybe with some manipulatives. #kinderchat
Hi, I am Sam and also a future educator. I totally agree with you one how this article helps us to see different ways to pursuit equity. I also want to be able to help as many students as I can and articles like this one can help. #kinderchat
i've been thinking about this, too - we teach reading/math, etc as SKILLS THAT CAN BE LEARNED, with differentiated approaches & strategies for ea. We need to do behaviour same way! #kinderchat
If we are keeping the child at the heart of the conversation, and work from that point of view, we should be able to come to consensus. Be flexible, open-minded, and see to understand another's perspective. #kinderchat
Important to focus on what we agree with. We need to Listen to parents concerns, thoughts and suggestions. Make it about what’s best for the child and not set up an adversarial situation #kinderchat
Cultural differences in beliefs re: children, learning, success can make this so tricky. All parents want success for their children, but what that LOOKS LIKE can vary greatly. #kinderchat
That's why small group and individual teaching is best, whole group doesn't hit many Ss, I love your statement of setting aside the beautiful lesson plan, and give them what they need in their way #kinderchat
A2: Seen from observations number 10 on the list I would have loved to see more of the teacher setting aside her beautiful lesson for the couple of students that couldn’t understand and start over teaching them in another way with maybe with some manipulatives. #kinderchat
Exactly. Why do we spend so much time punishing children for behavior rather than taking the intentional time to model and teach the skills and ways of being in a community that we want them to learn? I suspect emotions and biases have a lot to do with it. #kinderchat
Hill, I totally agree with you. I know when I was in school it was so hard for me to learn they wanted me to because I learn differently. I think we do need to teach students more than one way to learn. Everyone is different and it is unfair to teach one way. #kinderchat
We you hear a T blame their performance on their circumstances whatever they may be, its a problem. Then, they don't do anything to improve their performance for the benefit of the S, that's a bigger problem. If your isn't learning, find the way to teach him/her #kinderchat
Exactly! Especially when you consider that success is defined differently in different cultures, as is the importance of school and learning! #Kinderchat#EDUC2100
A2: I would like to see schools build more, better relationships with parents. There are many communication apps that allows quick and easy communication between the teachers and the parents. The parents should be in the know about their child's education. #Kinderchat
I’ve started to host small groups with families where they come in and paint or do another art activity (to make it community and not me as the expert) and then I just sit and listen to them tell me their hopes and dreams for their children. It’s a start...#kinderchat
This article came out the same time that the POC conference wastaki g place. A few of our teachers attended. I went years ago and found it eye opening. #kinderchat
Have you ever heard of the Zones of Regulation? It’s a good program that gives words to our feelings and gives strategies to help us. I like it! #kinderchat
A3: I'm struggling with #7, which I'm reading as rewarding the smart kids with summer school enrichment. I may be just crabby. I believe we should enrich the curriculum not encroach on the next grade/year's. #kinderchat
Reading this brings ideas I can use when I start to teach. Like building a relationship with the parents, embrace all students from everywhere in my class, help my students with studying skills, etc..
#Kinderchat
Almost all of PEI lost power as well as parts of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Luckily my electronics were charged and it wasn’t too cold! #kinderchat
WE also need to be in the know about their child & everything that goes on. Communication is two-way. We need to remember to value & empower Ps. When they know we want to hear what their desires & needs are for their child, we will have better relationships. #kinderchat
If nothing else I love the language- I’m in the green zone today! It just gives words that some kids might not have! Plus the strategies are great too #kinderchat
A2: #Kinderchat#EDUC2100 I'd like to see more emphasis on #4 because studying and organization are difficult and take practice! It comes more naturally to some students, but others struggle finding strategies that work for them; we need to help them discover how they learn best!
I don't like summer school for anyone, really. Traditional summer school to catch up. Am I reading this incorrectly? I have a headache, so, could just be me. #kinderchat
After reading the article has helped me set up some future goals for myself as a future educator. One of which is to make sure each student and incledued and find ways for each student to learn thier way at a pace they can handle. #Kinderchat#uwpsoe2010
Our school uses this as well. When I sub I try to ask the kids why they may have put themselves in “that zone” and why/what happened. Rich descriptive language depending on age and grade.#kinderchat

Here’s the link to their site. It’s a great way to help kids identify their feelings and gives them strategies to help their self-regulation #kinderchat
Basically - 4 zones: Green - calm, alert, ready to learn. Yellow - getting excited, a little boisterous or emotional, but still in control. Red - OUT OF CONTROL NEED STRATEGIES TO GET BACK DOWN. Blue - tired, sick, sluggish.#Kinderchat
A3: #Kinderchat#EDUC2100 As teacher we need to remember that no single teaching strategy is going to be the solution to all of our problems. Different learners and situations call for different approaches, and we need to focus on finding what's right for students, not for us!
I don't like summer school for anyone, really. Traditional summer school to catch up. Am I reading this incorrectly? I have a headache, so, could just be me. #kinderchat
3.5 I think its SO important for early childhood educators to do the equity inside and outside work bc we are setting the S's foundation on education. We have the power to break systemic cycles of oppression #kinderchat
Reading this brings ideas I can use when I start to teach. Like building a relationship with the parents, embrace all students from everywhere in my class, help my students with studying skills, etc..
#Kinderchat
Maybe? I don’t like summer school; but I think that comes from my privilege. I spent my childhood summers at the library and the park and camp. That’s not option for lot of kids & for them maybe being in specialized/interest based summer school would be positive. #kinderchat
I realize my description sort of sounds like a behaviour chart, but NO! It's a shared vocabulary that creates self-awareness and empathy, sharing of strategies. #kinderchat
I would love to involve Ps more, but they all work and have a hard time coming in during the school day. I"d love to use their gift/expertise to teach Ss things different than I can #kinderchat
Sidenote- I always thought I lived most of my life in the green zone, but I’ve since come to realize I spend more time in the yellow zone than I’d like to admit, lol! #kinderchat
The primary and middle school principal shared this article (https://t.co/G3CYihpafx) with the staff today and it fits in well with the focus of our chat so I am going to share it with you in closing. #kinderchat
This is great! Behavior issues can be difficult to deal with, and teaching students to be self-aware, self-controlled, and responsible can help them to succeed! #Kinderchat#EDUC2100

We need to remember not to jump to conclusions nor assume without taking the time to listen. We can be open and available to suggestions and check our own biases and where they might stem from #kinderchat
I have taught summer school many years ago when we had it, we made it so fun the kids loved coming. Now I tutor in the summers and the Ss have no slide and end up even with the peers they were behind in and feel so much more confident #kinderchat
My school offered summer school and I enjoyed it! And it was always surrounded numerous topics like reading / science / health / etc. I took a health / fitness class in like fourth grade as a summer school and LOVED it!!! #Kinderchat
That is great that the school is recognizing the importance of the student's different cultures. Such a wide range of languages! The school must have to work hard to include and embrace them all. #kinderchat
3.5: Just today I have been reminded how important it is to actually sit down and talk to the child who might be “losing it”. Because it’s so much easier to come to a consensus oh behaviour when we do #kinderchat
The tricky thing with parent meetings can also be language. We are working really hard to hire school assistants who come from communities the children do so we have staff with shared languages as families. Then they come to the meetings too and help translate/engage. #kinderchat
I’m not a fan of summer school to catch up per se. I’d like to see programs that open up for PBL or makerspace/geniushour opportunities. Get the “catch up” taught I. A more creative format #kinderchat
As we wrap up, take some time to check your messages and mentions and to connect with those you’ve met at the chat. Thanks for coming to tonight’s chat. Next week another member of the #kinderchat village will be here facilitating for you all. Have a great night!
Yes, don't say things like, 'Why don't you know this? I taught it to you yesterday.' Guess what? You taught it to yourself not the student. We all don't learn the same way. What makes better sense to me, might not to you. #kinderchat
Lifetime Sports was always the one I signed up for as it was like a three hour PE class. Here you chose two blocks that was morning and afternoon. In sixth grade I took one that had to do with teaching you skills on how to survive if you got lost in the woods #KinderChat
I know having an EAL/ESL teacher who is actually from China, and fluent in both English and Mandarin has made a world of difference for some of our Chinese students. Just to know some adult understands them! #kinderchat

Thank you everybody for letting me experience and participate in my first ever tweetchat, I'll have to do this again! Have a great night!! #kinderchat#uwpsoe4020
get with leadership and ask do/why meeting have to be at the school and at a specific time? Can you hold them at varying times within the community? Easier access for parents. #kinderchat
Thanks for having me! I enjoyed the discussion! Makes me so excited to start teaching! I've run into many people who can't wait to get out of teaching and tell me horror stories, so its refreshing to talk to people who are passionate and excited! #Kinderchat#EDUC2100
The health summer school class in fourth grade involved different things with the body. At the end of the summer we'd build this "body walk" and have all the other summer school classes go through it in groups and we Ss would talk about it with the other Ss. #KinderChat
Musing on the summer school thread: what if the primary focus & goal of summer programs was NON-ACADEMIC skills (social, emotional, physical) that are critical to academic progress? #kinderchat
So what if summer programs were PLAY BASED ALWAYS FOR ALL AGES, with teachers/coaches there to support the social-emotional-behavioural regulation we know kids need? #kinderchat
And by "play based" I do not mean board game camp or soccer camp or lego camp. I mean truly open ended, room full of options, access to outdoors, DO WHAT YOU WANT play. All day. All ages. #kinderchat
Thank you every one for making my first tweet chat a good one. I learned so much from the article and I know that I could apply it towards my future self as an educator. Thank-you. #uwpsoe2010#Kinderchat
