Hi #4thchat Friends - Ready to talk Loving Literacy - How Do We Get Kids to Do It? We are trying a 30 minute format tonight - feel free to add #4thQuickChat to our regular hashtag!
Doing well. We are supposed to get temps in the high 20's tonight - NOT ready for the cold weather. But the foliage is sure pretty! #4thchat#4thQuickChat
A1 Provide many opportunities throughout the day to read. Celebrate reading often! Give time for the students to discuss what they have read. #4thchat#4thQuickChat
That's HUGE @rader5thgrade lThere are so many ways to incorporate literacy during all areas of the curriculum - need to capitalize on it. #4thchat#4thQuickChat
I am so glad that the last two years that I taught ELA, I made sure our read aloud time was first and never got overlooked. My students really looked forward to that 10-15 minutes at the start of every day and enjoyed the books. #4thchat#4thQuickChat
I think students need to know it is a priority for ALL of us...we need to give them time to read books they enjoy throughout the day. #4thchat#4thQuickChat

The kids are NEVER too old to be read to...it's fun to see the students get into a shared experience through a read aloud! #4thchat#4thQuickChat Good for you @plnaugle to keep that going!

A2 Every week as we read a story from our book, we connect if we can to the author of the story on Twitter. They are all so happy to respond to us. #4thchat#4thQuickChat
I was so inspired by @pernilleripp 's Global Read Aloud (#GRA) Project that I made sure we took put and connected with others reading the same book. even got the authors to tweet back to us. #4thchat
This is the time of year that I miss living in the Northeast. I loved fall. The crisp weather, the beautiful foliage, a fire burning in the fire[place, sweaters, running through the fallen leaves. #4thchat
*Q1: What are some ways you nurture a love of reading in your class? #4thchat#4thQuickChat
*Q2: Where does technology fit in with the love of literacy? #4thchat#4thQuickChat
A2: Love listening to stories online; having students use the Nook or Kindle app on iPad. Fav part is when they discover they could get the definitions of unknown words at the touch of a button! #4thchat#4thQuickChat
A1: I talk about books every chance I get. I let them know my favorites, what I'm currently reading, and ask them for recommendations. #4thchat#4thQuickChat
#4thchat My Ss read the whole book (One and Only Ivan)w/o destroying it with endless questions. (You know the ones.) Threw in a fun @quizizz formative for accountability. OMG, the small group bookchat I had today! Absolutely a-ma-zing! The insights! Shoutout to @pam_pdnolte!
I have a special red wooden bookshelf that houses my very favorite books and ones I know most kids I teach love (Diary of Wimpy Kid series, graphic novels) and tell the students that the books on those shelves are so special that the books can only be read in my read. #4thchat
A3: My last year as a 4th grade teacher I incorporated the Notice & Note by @KyleneBeers & Robert Probst. Kids loved looking for and using the Signposts! I think it gave them a new appreciation for reading: https://t.co/cW9imlx7Al#4thchat#4thQuickChat
If a students asks me if they can take one of the books from the "special bookcase" home to read, I make a deal with them that they must tell me about the book when they are done. It's like our special secret. #4thchat
A4: I once saw a teacher write notes to her Ss right in the book - she would give the book to the Ss and ask her to ask a question/make a prediction. Got lots of kids to enjoy reading! #4thchat#4thQuickChat
A5: I think that no matter what we need to get the books in the hands of our students. The more we can talk them up; have theme days; connect with others will make a difference! Let them READ!!!!! #4thchat#4thQuickChat
Our librarian has worked hard for the past couple of years to get over 60 guest readers from our community to come to our school for Read Across America Day. We even had a team from a hospital arrive by helicopter last year. #4thchat
A3. I have a wall that says I mustache ask you a question. There is a question for ever RL standards Velcro to the wall. They can pick one off their to respond to during SSR. I also started #sketchnotes this year and seen HUGE success! #4thchat#4thQuickChat

Some schools have every teacher post on the outside of their doors what they are currently reading. Should be posted in common areas so everyone can see. #4thchat#4thQuickChat
