The name is Matt. I teach 5th graders in AL, and I'm a proud Hufflepuff at Hogwarts!

A1: HS lacks a morning mtg but on Fri we do high 5 fri. Music over loud speaker and groups greet at the door. This was our 1 yr.

A1: Model positive, 1st & foremost! Then start day w/positive reflection about day before. And yes, music is huge part day.
I greet students as they come in. Ask about what they did weekend/yesterday or about morning.

I was always a fan of the music over the intercom. We didn't do it regularly at my school, but it was a nice treat!

the kids overall enjoyed it. The group that hosts that day gets to pick the music.
A2 Ss can write about whatever topic they want w/in genre we are examining
A2: Started Genius Hour last yr. (We called them Passion Projects.) Completely student driven.
A2 Ss have control over how they share their learning.
A2 Next year I am going to be doing more projects which will lead to more Ss choice and engagement.
A2: We vote. We use an Official Counter who tallies. Sometimes we just raise hands-other times we do a 'super secret squirrel' vote
A2: In computer lab, Ss can work on reading/math skills website or work on keyboarding skills website.

Allowing Ss to have choice in a product gave opportunity for them to use creative talents that I wasn't aware of.
was invaluable to me this past year...just as good for bringing them back down as it is for revving them up!

Love it! We had a small 10-minute gap in our schedule right after lunch where we did Flow and Maximo all the time!

A2 Ss choose books, writing topics, projects. Sometimes partners for work. Have done Genius Hour and liked it a lot.

A4 - I think it's important to provide scaffolding. Support them through or they'll become frustrated and lose desire to wonder.

That is a great way for authentic learning also.

I struggled with this too. Found that providing feedback stems gave Ss a nudge 4 how 2 develop meaningful feedback.

A6 Small steps. Don't try to have them jump into something they are not comfortable with. Help them see how to do this gradually.
A6: Ss choice should be taught to ALL preservice tchrs. It's a classroom belief system. It's in the building of the environment.
