#DITCHbook was created by Ditch That Textbook author Matt Miller. The chat focuses on innovative teaching ideas and disrupting standard textbook education.
As we start, here are some things to think about: EduProtocols are (easy to use) things we do in the classroom that we can mix around to create any kind of lesson for any kind of classroom in any grade. #ditchbook

Lisa Scumpieru, 10th grade ELA teacher from Hagerstown, Md. I’m still up for a change, so I thought I would drop by. I can’t guarantee if I’ll stay for the whole chat. #EST:school tomorrow #ditchbook
Me too! Have been intrigued about #eduprotocols since #ditchsummit! Not sure I have completely wrapped my head around it yet. I think they're prob simpler than what I'm thinking! #ditchbook
Q1: Are you tired of always looking for a fresh or one-shot lesson and constantly trying to explain what the assignment is? What is your current solution? #ditchbook
A1: #ditchbook EduProtocols are my solution! 8-10 mixed and remixed to create multiple mixes of lessons: Iron Chef, 8 Parts, 4 Elements, PechaKucha, etc. Saves my life.
✨A1: I love searching for new ideas and lessons! I might be crazy, but it's what excites me and keeps me energized! I have found that using gamification, like #XPLAP, with your favorite ideas can increase the longevity while maintaining student engagement!✨ #DitchBook
Q1: Are you tired of always looking for a fresh or one-shot lesson and constantly trying to explain what the assignment is? What is your current solution? #ditchbook
A1 Take current lessns a build opportunities for student o do the "heavy" lifting. Band is a perfect place for protocols prior to rehearsal as well as during. Makes the learning process faster and the music making deeper. Still working on these. #ditchbook
A1: Protocols! A gem I learned from #DitchSummit and am putting into place in my classroom. Build a system and then use it with each novel/short story/drama that we cover. #DitchBook
A1: Sticking with a routine that works. Keeping the protocols the same with different skills. A huge time saver for me and less confusion for the students. #ditchbook
A1: focus on routines related to workflow and ALWAYS solicit student input on lessons and tasks. Also, I stopped actually giving whole-class instructions a long time ago (screencast the gist, intervene on individ basis) #ditchbook
A1 HyperDocs can solve some of those issues. I am also a huge fan of workshop-style instruction. Once routines are established, Ss get to work. Excited to think more abt #EDUProtocols tonight to share w Ts in my district! #ditchbook
Q1: Are you tired of always looking for a fresh or one-shot lesson and constantly trying to explain what the assignment is? What is your current solution? #ditchbook
A1: I maintain an element of stability in every lesson. It will start/end the same way, but what happens in the middle may be a mystery. Also, transparency goes a long way. When trying something new/risky, I tell my students and ask for their honest feedback. #Ditchbook
A1. I've found a solid core group of tech tools that I enjoy and always refer back to them. @Flipgrid#GoogleTourbuilder@AdobeSpark@padlet I introduce new tools selectively and slowly! Therefore, it's not always NEW NEW for Ss and I!
#ditchbook
Q1: Are you tired of always looking for a fresh or one-shot lesson and constantly trying to explain what the assignment is? What is your current solution? #ditchbook
A1: Google Classroom is where I house lessons. Everyday I post an announcement or assignment with objective and anything they need access to. Love it & allows for Ss to easily go back and see what they missed. #ditchbook
A1 No surprise here, I use digital tools like Flipgrid to enhance lessons that need a refresher often. My student know Flipgrid already so even when the activity is new, they know the "deal" with Flipgrid. #DitchBook
A1: I use Google Classroom as the hub of my lessons. Per the suggestion from @loriblocker and @kfoleysharp (according to Google), the option to add Topics is a welcome one. #Ditchbook
A1: Finding new ways to use the same tools -- or a "retread" on old lessons -- can put a new spin on learning while keeping students in a comfortable framework. #DitchBook
A1 I’m not sure 🤔 I have an answer for this. Excited to learn more. I think the closest thing I have seen in our elementary classes is math stations. Students learn a new one each week and expand their choices. #ditchbook
Yep, we think a lesson may be killer but if it doesn’t engage the kids like we thought then find something else. Getting feedback from Ss is huge! #DitchBook
A1 I love pulling together 10-15 standards into a fun flow and do that same general workflow 10-12 times. Faster and easier each time. That’s how I started leaning into #eduprotocols#ditchbook
Yes! And..if you number your assignments like @alicekeeler explains in her book starting with 001, you can correlate the numbers from GC with your grade book. Less confusion and more organization - a teacher’s dream! #ditchbook

A1 If honest... probably current solution is grapsing at what sticks? But do use Google Classroom and just getting started in a lot of this so good chat to be in right? #DitchBook
Competency was a big topic in today's #4ocf Voxer book study! his is the case for students as well! Build up their skills. Don't be surface level on a bunch of different skills and tools! Go deep! #ditchbook
A1: I feel like focusing on "lessons" in general as the fundamental structure is just exhausting. I don't want to be constantly teaching lessons! Alternative: make the experience bigger, encompass more, and bring it outside the classroom! #ditchbook
After #Edcampyo I started using them in math, the kids appreciated the consistency and for quite a few the engagement became the numbers themselves. I didn't expect that at first #ditchbook
Interesting! I have tried this, but find that direct instruction is important the first time. Students then know they can refer to a library of How To Videos I've created for the specific tools I want them to use. #ditchbook

✨A2: I ❤️ using technology! Anywhere technology can enhance a lesson and increase feedback, I use it! There are so many tools available that can assist instruction; I haven't yet struggled to find a great match! #DitchBook

A1: If I look at the Madeline Hunter 7, I'd say Ind. practice. If it's the 5E's, the I'd say the 'Elaborate' phase. Making sure Ss work is meaningful. #ditchbook
A2: Ummm. I don't really struggle with tech integration anywhere. It's kind of my superpower, and sometimes in my classes, we just need pencil and paper. Sometimes. #DitchBook
I have taken to writing my own curriculum. I write units of study for my grade at the district level, but I craft and differentiate all activities by group, period, and need. It's a constant process of growth and study for me and my kids. #ditchbook
Q1: Are you tired of always looking for a fresh or one-shot lesson and constantly trying to explain what the assignment is? What is your current solution? #ditchbook
Used the protocols method for kids to make the posters. Focused on slope, graphs, tables, ratios, constant of proportionality, etc. Eventually turned them into wallpaper #ditchbook#teamBCSD
A2: There is SO much potential for using tech to enhance closure activities/exit tickets. But I tend to get caught up in the logistics of it - should we grab chromebooks with 5 minutes left, just to pack them up? Or should we use cell phones? #ditchbook
A2: The guided practice portion. I think when I model it for them, I want to show them my version of what I’m asking them to do. I get creative with Chatterpix, @flipgrid, and Screencastify. Yet, how much do you show before they mock/copy the T? #ditchbook
A2 Full Band rehearsal. We record, use a digital tuner, etc... BUT I am oit sure I want technology there too much, The human part of making music is too important. I don't wanta sterile environment but do want the things that can done with tech to be to free up time! #ditchbook
A1 Started using a #HyperDoc . As extra credit on their semester exam Ss provided feedback on my first use of it- 9 tasks, one was optional, one was artsy, one was summative. Feedback= positive! Ss felt it was all-in-one shop and could see everything at once. #ditchbook
A2: trick question. It isn't the parts of the lesson that have caused me the struggle... it's the ways I have tried to DO the parts of the lesson. When it gets inauthentic or seems forced, I look at what needs to change about the task. #ditchbook
Enjoying these conversations and stealing ideas to take back to my school to better engaged all of our Learners hoping also to increase my #PLN#Ditchbook
People either didn't believe or have trouble understanding that some of my highest and lowest students were getting pleasure out of working on a problem with a friend on the whiteboards or teaching the skill. #ditchbook
Ha! Yes! I only dropped in to #sstlap for a couple minutes! Had to do a few things before #ditchbook. Wasn't efficient with my time earlier in the evening! Oops! #netflixproblem
Just make sure they have the right vocab and concepts clearly shared/displayed and it doesn’t matter HOW they share it: essay, video, webpage, Preso, whatever! #ditchbook
There's plenty of room to grow there. I'm the tech coach for HS and one of two Eng Ts, plus a gazillion other titles I have (small school), so we're 1:1 and I'm working on them. :) #DitchBook
✨A3: NO VACANCY FOR WORKSHEETS! Students groan when they see them, and so do I! Save the trees, save your student engagement, and save your sanity! #DitchBook
A2- I don't feel tech NEEDS to be integrated into all parts of the lesson plan. Tech for tech's sake is pointless. Anything not meaningful and purposeful for my kids learning and/or development isn't done. I use it when it adds value, which is often, but not always. #DitchBook
A2: I personally don’t find it difficult but my colleagues struggle with doing more than substitution. Combining apps to create engaging projects tends to be the most difficult. #Ditchbook
A2 Not as much trouble if I can just have them use their phones (we're BYOD), but anything that is easier on laptops, I have to share 1 set with 2 other teachers- hard to plan.#ditchbook
A2. In terms of beginning, middle, and end, I have my go-to routines... My biggest struggle is sometimes in providing and proofing student resources for student use when researching/creating in class. Need to be better in curating these ss-related sources. #ditchbook
A2) I wouldn't say struggle, just sometimes don't do it. Nothing beats reading as a class with kids making funny voices etc...except when you do a choral read and record it! #ditchbook
a2 Having meaningful, purposeful learning experiences in math in a challenge with tech, especially enhancing conceptual development and/or independent practice (beyond Desmos) #ditchbook
A3: Worksheets have a very minimal, if even nonexistent place in my lesson planning. What value do they hold? Can't the learning be done in another format? #Ditchbook
Yes! Did you watch/listen to @jcorippo's #ditchsummit video? Loved it. Great frameworks to apply to any content. Excited to learn more, too! #ditchbook
A3: Never. Ever. Worksheets do nothing to elevate the learning. And I disagree with the idea that solidifying content knowledge has lasting value. Let's go DO something with the knowledge and use our resources to fill in gaps when they arise (as NEEDED) #ditchbook
A3: Worksheets have no place in my lesson planning, but I can look at one at times and turn it into something interactive via @goformative or @flipgrid. Last year when we went 1:1 with i-pads a S said, “Why can’t we do a worksheet, it requires no thought.” No answer. #ditchbook
A3: I don't really do worksheets. I do have some word root books that I work through with my Ss, but we're moving toward S agency and self assessment here. It's working well so far.#DitchBook
A3: I find that Ss are not interested in worksheets. Many of them brush them off or are not engaged at all. I have a hard time even considering them as an option in my classroom. #ditchbook
A3: We use a lot of worksheets and I really want to get out of that routine. My biggest fear is happening: turning worksheets into google docs. 😩😩 planning on changing it for this upcoming semester #ditchbook
A2. In terms of beginning, middle, and end, I have my go-to routines... My biggest struggle is sometimes in providing and proofing student resources for student use when researching/creating in class. Need to be better in curating these ss-related sources. #ditchbook
a3 worksheets are fine, they just can't be the only thing Ss see. A sheet for Ss to record their thinking or create their visual model, this is a worksheet for me, but 20 of exact problems is not. #ditchbook
I find they are helpful for visual learners, I sometimes use short ones to practice a new idea, before jumping back to personalized dialogue/action. #ditchbook
Some students do thrive with graphic organizers and @ericcurts have some lovely digital ones that work well in hyperdocs for choice for those who use/need them. #ditchbook
A3: Mainly we use planning sheets to get our calculations or thinking out on paper first before starting a tech project. For 3rd grade being able to do paper/pencil is still important. depends on what you consider a “worksheet” #Ditchbook
Excellent! We're all about finding ways to break out of traditional teaching with tech, creativity, innovation, etc. Sounds like you're a great fit! :) #DitchBook
A3: Students find comfort in familiar methods. Worksheets can be a nice sign of stability to students. But that doesn’t mean you can’t revolutionize the worksheet! Mix up the status quo; ask thought provoking questions! For example, make a briefing for a president! #Ditchbook
I would argue that's not a "worksheet" - unless they do it like small robot humans, hand it in, you grade it, and then hand it back..then BOOM next unit. #ditchbook
A2: I struggle most with tech and intervention work. Much repetition is needed. Almost need worksheet-like experience (A3). The websites accelerate too fast. #DitchBook
A3: Almost none at this point. A few used as a progress check or as an article/reading exercise. No parades thrown by students over a WS yet #DitchBook
A3: Honestly they are the "threat" when Ss take tech for granted, works like a charm. WS day was their worst ever when they weren't appreciative #ditchbook
A3) I believe this is a mindset for some teachers as well, and as a principal I try and model this very concept in my day to day activities #OneNote#Ditchbook
I create my own #Sketchnotes graphic organizers that are amazing in assisting with S retention of whatever I'm covering...even movies over our content in Mythology! :) Used Google Drawings to make them. #DitchBook
A3 Worksheets done as a group bore Ss. As a piece of a #hyperdoc Ss are more likely to complete as a part of the whole theme, done at their own pace, with the answer key to self correct. #DitchBook
A3) hopping in for this one - I once wrote out a sweet plan on the back of an old worksheet I found in a random teacher desk in one of our school’s CPU labs. About the most use I’ve had out of a worksheet in a while. #DitchBook
A3) My kids love worksheets when they make the work and then record the answers in another language. Stepped away but started again today https://t.co/i7qwsAAZox#Ditchbook
A3) worksheets are one way that my Ss practice a skill. I teach K so lots of my rarely used worksheets r colored on. Sometimes it’s an entry task. #Ditchbook
A2 I use #HyperDocs for almost all of my in depth units. I can't really think of a place I struggle integrating tech. Sometimes it isn't always the best option thought #Sucker4PostIts#ditchbook
A3: My Ss are complicit so they do it, which is making me realize that I have to change quick! Lessons are provided for us, and I haven’t made it a priority to change it, which is another mistake of mine. #ditchbook#notenoughtime
A2 Hmm... I'm going to switch it up and say as a tech coach, my hardest sell is math because so much of the work does still need to be done on paper. (Not to say that I don't think it has a major role to play) #DitchBook
A3: do you require all students to plan with the same sheet in the same way? What if I want to plan in a Google Drawing and use stick figure representations or build a lego structure showing my thoughts? #ditchbook
YES! I love Eric's resources. I find when working on the computer like in computer science class the kids really need to write it out first. #Ditchbook
A3 I try to eliminate worksheets at ALL cost. There are occasionally engaging activities BUT I think no matter what, it can be brought further with technology. #DitchBook
A3b Ss aren’tclammering for them, but the sad part is school has trained them (I’m speaking broadly here) to just want to do the simple regurgitation. When asked to solve complex problems, they rather have a ws #ditchbook
I love the notion that edtech isn't an 'event.' If we layer it into our lessons/ units, and give Ss many opportunities to share their thinking/learning digitally, the depth of convo can occur. HyperDoc > @flipgrid responses > @seesaw > Adobe Spark, etc. #ditchbook
A4. Zero place. I've used paper worksheets maybe 5 times in all the past two years? Not going to lie, there are many "worksheets" that are "substituted" via tech, but event these have the collab component and share ability on Google for my viewing. #ditchbook
I have a hard time teaching and/or getting my colleagues to understand and implement app smashing. Like using @PicCollage to create visuals for pages in @BookCreatorApp#Ditchbook
In reply to
@jcorippo, @PicCollage, @BookCreatorApp
Gotta run and do bed time stories on this 5th Snow day! Thank you @jcorippo and #ditchbook Protocols are not about making it easier for us but making it easier for us to spend more time on the things that matter. The kids can do SO much if we show them & let them. DEEP leanring!
