A1 I think the best think you can do is allow for free time. Problematic when every moment is scheduled.
-
A1: Relevant student-led projects to make difference in school/community promote creativity, resilience. Open-ended= better.
-
A1 Sometimes I think it's important to just let kids be. Same with adults.
-
Would the free time be completely free, or do you think there should be some guidance for activity? https://t.co/iuJxjcnURb

-
A1: providing options to demonstrate understanding allows for freedom and flexibility
-
A1 Why we need recess and time outdoors whenever possible. Tending to a garden or something equally nurturing.
-
A1: Shift away from teacher as dispenser of knowledge toward facilitator develops learners as creative, critical thinkers

Hello everyone. I'm Stephanie Solis from Chicago, IL

Should student-led projects be all their idea/s or should some guidance be provided, parameters? https://t.co/XzMmo5JNSH

A1: Relevant student-led projects to make difference in school/community promote creativity, resilience. Open-ended= better.

Yet some Ts feel out of control when Ss have free time. Must honor their struggle and support.

Sounds like you are creating a Love it! https://t.co/kdMVUAh13O

Need to balance promoting and providing guidance.

A1 Creativity is a huge problem. Most 3 year olds are creative. Many univ Ss have little creative problem solving skills today
-
Maybe a bit from Column A and a bit from Column B.
-
. CCSS learning target rubrics keep focus, but student choice w/in guidelines promote innovation, ownership.
-
I entirely understand. A lot of us need that kind of support. Hard to let go.
-
Guidance as needed? Some will run with it, some will need a jump start/encouragement
-
Perhaps guidance as asked for.
-
2. In what ways do you allow students to differentiate and demonstrate their learning?
-
. Agreed. Guiding questions lead struggling learners through the process.
-
A2 Maybe ask students what they would like to teach. What interests them? Give suggestions.
-
Thinking of going back to basics in the Fall with simple creative/critical thinking exercises in every course ...

A1 This is Kitty in Cal For T led lesson needs fast pace.several activities in 1 period.wi/ random calling on S to engage

How can we help those Ts let go and prove that Ss will still be productive?
-
A3: Students use to evaluate peers, provide formative feedback to colleagues.
-
A2 Games, debates, concentric circles, Socratic seminar allow all to engage but allows difference in what each S offers
-
Still working on earning my Bachelors in ECE. Hope I can answer at least some questions!

create relevance, increase engagement, & are effective framework for 4 Cs.
-
Please share when you do.
-
Agree, students need time to express their interest to keep them engaged.
-
4. Are your students building a digital portfolio to self-monitor their progress? Promoting .
-
. Absolutely! Our "studio in a box" has been ordered and we eagerly await its arrival :)
-
Learned helplessness: "just tell me what to do and I'll do it"
-
Not sure. I have trouble with it myself. I just know that as a kid I would have liked more time like that.
-
A2 Yes!Need to continue w engaging activities even at univ.
BUTstudents need to strive in each class

Yes, so important for children of any age to be able to express their interest https://t.co/ZH5wrrKIO2

My apologies. Requires more braincells than I have functioning right now.

Interesting. How does structuring free time work? Not trying to be difficult but oxymoron?
-
I always try to structure 'free time' around a social emotional skill: empathy, self-control, etc.
-
This is actually becoming a very useful strategy for many children https://t.co/FDbAoq5nNC
-
-
Maybe teach everyone yoga or meditation.
-
When I was a kid we would have a few minutes of putting heads on desk. Seemed more like punishment than free time.
-
5. Have you considered bringing guests into class to broaden to build ?
-
Kid O and Kid Q both learn Yoga for the Special Child. I think it helps settle Kid Q down.
-
When I teach col S's & T's I do bingo, concentric circles, human treasure hunt w/ them.We ALL need to b'woke
-
The 'play' is unstructured but behavior and skills used are anchored in something that promotes productivity.
-
I find that even doing dishes can be calming. But of course gardening is more enjoyable.
-
In other words, do all kids know how to manage free time? Teach the skills necessary
-
Q5. Have you considered bringing guests into class to broaden to build ?
-
A5: My son still talks about career day, guest speakers came to school with insight into jobs w/which he lacked familiarity.
-
I remember that too. Ugh.
-
The stories that can be told resonate with students. https://t.co/8fUoospW1h

Interesting. I would use gardening that way. Sense of wonder, ie, seeing plants sprout & weeding, discipline

The importance of Not all of us do best with one way https://t.co/9wpIE8KhDz

Perhaps not the same as a classroom pet, but taking care of plants could teach similar skills.
-
A5: Always bring local experts in to support .
-
A5: Goal - , hangout sessions w/authors, scientists, etc. Tech expands opportunity.
-
Are they still doing that?
-
-
Q6. Have you discussed w/your students to build ?
-
Most of us don't. We all have our quirks and our learning preferences.
-
I hope not! I think we know more now than they did then.
-
I grew up in the 60s. My grammar school was overall very backwards.
-
-
And now I feel really old. Talking to all of you youngsters.
-
Stop me if I ever preface remarks with, "when I was your age..."
-
during some classroom observations I did student did after gym class with soft music
-
Q6. Have you discussed w/your students to build ?

A5 Need more career guidance 8th-12th & univ for Ss. They love it, want it.
