Q2. Recruiting student teachers is often a common practice when recruiting. How does your district recruit University students prior to their student teaching semester? #K12Talent
  • bcwhite Jan 22 @ 9:13 PM EST
A2. We seek opportunities to partner w/ universities for observations, practicums, or other teaching blocks prior to student teaching. We host pop-up teacher chats at universities to meet w/ students to share more about teaching and/or our school district. #K12Talent
  • bcwhite Jan 22 @ 9:13 PM EST
A2. We have also formed a district consortium to host virtual career fairs. This allows us to communicate with students in a simple and easy way, without dressing up and traveling, in a chat format that they are comfortable communicating in. #K12Talent
  • JessicaABennin1 Jan 22 @ 9:16 PM EST
A2. We are working with the Universities, and inviting their pre-student teaching students to our District for some Professional Development surrounding classroom management, and networking with specialists within the district. #K12Talent
  • JessicaABennin1 Jan 22 @ 9:16 PM EST
@_AASPA_ Q3. What strategies does your district have for improving partnerships with the Universities to help with increasing the number of student teachers that the University sends to your district? #K12Talent

A3. We look for opportunities to present during college education classes as well as partner with student organizations. We partner with university professors and student organizations to understand their needs and how we can help fill those. #K12Talent
  • bcwhite Jan 22 @ 9:18 PM EST
A3. We partnered with our city to provide a TopCity Teachers Program for student teachers in all city districts. The program incluedes a social, a lunch with the Mayor, and professional development. @TopekaChamber #K12Talent

A2 & A3: We partner with 2 universities & identify ST's early enough to put them through a summer “instructional coaching” program so they hit the ground running once the semester starts. Our CT’s who accept ST’s 4 this program must be trained instructional coaches. #K12Talent

  • JessicaABennin1 Jan 22 @ 9:21 PM EST
A3. It's important for the University to know what systems of support your district offers to teachers. We invite the professors to tour our schools, observe PLCs, and attend our yearly Evening of Appreciation for our best educators. #K12Talent
  • JessicaABennin1 Jan 22 @ 9:23 PM EST
Wow! I love the summer coaching program. #K12Talent

@_AASPA_ Q4. Does your district have a systematic way to identify Education Support Professionals who would make good teachers? What is the process? #K12Talent
  • bcwhite Jan 22 @ 9:26 PM EST
A4. We have a Para Tuition Assistance Program that paras can apply for to receive tuition assistance and become a Special Education Teacher for the district. Applicants are screened for program requirements, reviewed, and interviewed. #K12Talent
  • bcwhite Jan 22 @ 9:26 PM EST
A4. We also partnered with our local university as they implemented a para-to-teacher program based on a grant through the state. We market to our paras and they apply through the university. #K12Talent
  • GregDietzD207HR Jan 22 @ 9:28 PM EST
A4: We require parapro's (teacher assistants) to have an IL teaching license. This gives us a cadre of internal candidates to choose from as jobs get posted. We do have a high turnover because many end up with teaching positions after garnering experience with us. #K12Talent
    In reply to @JessicaABennin1, @_AASPA_
  • JessicaABennin1 Jan 22 @ 9:28 PM EST
A4. We have found success by sending emails seeking those with intent to become teachers and then setting up individual meetings to map out their goals and help them identify how to become licensed. We are looking to advance our strategies. #K12Talent
  • JessicaABennin1 Jan 22 @ 9:29 PM EST
@_AASPA_ Q5. What incentives does your district offer for hard to fill positions? #K12Talent
  • bcwhite Jan 22 @ 9:33 PM EST
A5. Our district offers an incentive payment of up to $1,500 for newly hired teachers in areas of shortage, critical need, or other factors as identified by the Board of Education. #K12Talent
  • JessicaABennin1 Jan 22 @ 9:33 PM EST
A5. We have found sign-on bonuses work well. The District pays up to $2,000, and depending on how hard that position has been for the school to fill, they sometimes match the $2,000; so the teacher receives a $4,000 sign-on bonus. #K12Talent
  • JessicaABennin1 Jan 22 @ 9:34 PM EST
@_AASPA_ Q6. Does your district strategically staff Title I schools, or other highly impacted schools? What steps are taken to strategically staff certain schools? #K12Talent
  • bcwhite Jan 22 @ 9:37 PM EST
A6. We strategically staff Title I schools and other highly impacted schools. We added teaching positions to support with interventions and learning. We also added positions to address the increasing social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students. #K12Talent
  • JessicaABennin1 Jan 22 @ 9:39 PM EST
A6. We provide additional staff for behavior interventions and counseling/social work. However, that is often reactive. We are studying ways to staff with teachers and administrators using a different staffing ratio as preventative work. #K12Talent
  • JessicaABennin1 Jan 22 @ 9:40 PM EST
@_AASPA_ Q7. Is your district offering incentives for highly effective educators who choose to work in highly impacted schools? What are the incentives? #K12Talent
  • bcwhite Jan 22 @ 9:44 PM EST

  • bcwhite Jan 22 @ 9:46 PM EST
A8. We have not focused on out-of-state universities at our district. Our virtual career fair participation allows us to market and connect with out-of-state universities in a simple and easy way for students to explore possibilities. #K12Talent

A8. Some Universities have allowed us to visit their students, on campus, in their education classes, a few months before the fair. We have found that by networking with the students prior to the fair, our hiring increases by 12-15 teachers! #K12Talent
