Hello, #HCPSTeach friends! Thank you for joining us this evening! I’m honored to be moderating this chat in partnership with teachers from Hillsborough County, Tampa, FL.
I’m a literacy specialist in the West Clermont School District in Cincinnati, OH…coming to you from Norfolk, VA where I’m partnering with a school for a couple of days. #HCPSteach@WestCler
A1 Visual images are changing the publishing landscape. Here’s an article filled with examples about how visual literacy is changing what we want to read. #HCPSTeachhttps://t.co/9yXVTKdzPb
A1: visual literacy allows students to explore their learning through a different medium. It can help make connections to content and is imperative to visual learners. #HCPSTeach
We are living in an image-saturated culture. It’s important for Ss to be able to construct meaning when looking at various images like infographics...just like with text #hcpsteach
A1 I’m so glad to have extra characters! I give talks all over the country about how comicbooks can help increase comprehension using visual literacy to give deeper understanding to concepts. Comics have evolved beyond being just for reluctant readers. #HCPSTeach

A1 - Because it allows s's a variety of ways to show their learning. Some of my s's prefer to use words, some prefer diagrams, some pictures #HCPSteach
A1: Because what we see or create for others to see has the power to change the world. But until we tune into the space between our ears and what we’re thinking about all of it, and until we learn to ask the right questions, it doesn’t much matter. That’s literacy. #HCPSTeach

I'm Abigail sorry I am late! I teach amazing 4th graders A1 visual literacy opens a door to art and music which changes people for the better... living with an artist I am more and more convinced visual literacy will help bridge gaps #HCPSteach
Here is a link to my talk at @C2E2 last year on #STEM in the classroom connecting it with comics to engage students. I’ll also be on an upcoming episode of the podcast Classroom Brew. #HCPSTeachhttps://t.co/5j58U9kTRJ
A2: Reading an image still takes into account your background knowledge and requires you to take in and process information, as well as infer about possibilities. #hcpsteach
A2 In some ways, YES! I start by scanning the entirety and then tend to examine the information based upon the graphic top to bottom. But then again I'm a mathy.....#HCPSTeach
A1: Images tell stories, allow readers to create meaning. From drawings in caves to hieroglyphics; images hold meaning. Look how the @nytimes has image use has evolved...fascinating. https://t.co/ybycJMgWTR#hcpsteach
I am very interested in the relationship between reading comprehension and graphic texts. So many higher order thinking skills are at play when kids read them-- def. NOT just comic books. #HCPSteach
A2 reading an image can involve so much more. Reading symbols and understanding their meaning knowing that certain symbols in succession might mean something different than solo and also reading the image to understand deeper thoughts and ideas #HCPSTeach
Q2 I think reading an image is a lot like a close reading of a traditional text-- take in the big picture first and then hone in on the details... then start to synthesize and connect those thinking dots! #HCPSteach
A2 When I’m thinking deeply about an image, I decelerate. I dwell in the image for a while. I need to do that more often when reading complex text. Easier for me with images. #hcpsteach
Our brains dissect images. We can notice & interpret details, just as we notice & interpret information in text. Ex: The cover of a book can draw us in & make us want to read the story being told through the picture. We can look at an illustration & gather info. #HCPSteach
Q2: I bring my schema to make sense of what I see, I ask questions about why it was created, and I always think about the choices the creator of the text made to help me understand what it says @HcpsTeach#HCPSteach
A2 reading an image using skills like context and inference similar to reading a text. However, reading an image is a much more nuanced technique that needs to be honed like reading. One of the best things about visual literature is that it encourages rereading. #HCPSTeach

A2 You read explicitly and implicitly. You look for ways the creator intended you to "read" the image and then you also try to bring your own new meaning. You make connections to things you already know. #HCPSteach
A2 a picture tells a thousand words... the longer you read it, the more observations and connections you make, and you begin to question and infer #HCPSteach
A2: Metacognition. There is power in thinking about our thinking. I love when we change our minds after seeing images, reading texts, and conversing with others. Part of the beauty in being human. #HCPSTeach
A2 I am always drawn to images first- they lead me to the words. I agre w/ @TannyMcG that I reread them as well. I usually see something more after the words #HCPSteach
Agree. I actually feel more stress when asked to read an image or comment on a painting. Much more comfortable with words! Our students may feel the same when faced with text. #hcpsteach

@booktoss has an article in the most recent Reading Teacher about graphic novels called Moving Our Can(n)ons: Toward an Appreciation of Multimodal Texts in the Classroom-- lots of great information about how to teach kids to read them! #HCPSteach
A2- you begin by assigning meaning to the image and developing your own feelings about it. From there, you’ve built connections and started your own “text” along with it. Add it to the existing text and you’ve got a recipe for comprehension 👍#HCPSTeach
A2v2 Additionally, there are many people who are more comfortablewith reading an@image than reading a text. This can be seen with the rise of sketch notes, concept maps, and graphic organizers. #HCPSTeach
A2: Every image has a subject, action, and details that make it just like a story. Understanding these details is vital to getting the "big picture" (pun intended). #HCPSTeach
2 - My third graders are learning to identify the author's point of view, and we are comparing the author's point of view to our own. Tomorrow, we're looking at an image to compare perspectives. I can't wait to see how they each have different perspectives #hcpsteach

Look at the new ways students think and search. Often students will google a concept and switch to images rather than text. They communicate with emojis, memes, and snaps. These evolutionary changes to communication have to be affecting cognition as well. #HCPSTeach
I would say the reverse in Mathematics, introduce the imagery of a conic section and most of them panic. I try to get them to 'own' the imagery and produce their own with overlapping tech on their choice of real life photos. Helps a little #HCPSTeach
Sketchnoting allows my students to share new knowledge in a way that is exciting! The are engaged, and love that they have a say in what they are doing! They feel empowered when they are sketchnoting! #HCPSteach

A3: I did this all the time for my unit on Social Injustices. Used powerful images from 60’s to launch conversations BEFORE digging into text #hcpsteach
A2 Also words and images are representations of meaning ... students need to be able to decipher that meaning... I think this is through using rich authentic text ... #hcpsteach

A3 I use padlet as an exploratory tool for the students to find images that fit the mathematical concept that we are covering. Linking background knowledge with our new material prior to instruction. #HCPSTeach
Have you seen @SolutionSquad ? That comic is created by a math teacher and comes packed with supporting materials for lesson planning. It also has an inclusive cast of characters that nails representation in meaningful ways. #HCPSTeach
A3 I recently saw an image path. Images placed on the floor in a pathway where students could walk, talk, and view together. Will try this out soon myself! #HCPSteach
A3: Just today I was perusing Pinterest. I gathered lots of background knowledge just from the pictures I saw. Images let us connect the dots. #HCPSTeach
Q3: I love the I See, I Think, I Wonder strategy for building background knowledge in all disciplines. When we look closely and ask questions we suddenly know so much and ready to learn more @HcpsTeach#HCPSteach
Images can help students understand what something is like - for its own sake, in relation to themselves, and in relation to the larger world. #HCPSTeach
A3 social studies seems easy to me. Show pictures of the time period, maps, cultures that are being studied, etc. in science show models of atoms or molecules. Anything visual to get the gears turning! #HCPSTeach

A3: In our social studies course of study, we’ve been talking about drawing students in with various images depicting the same historical event. Let them get curious. Let them ask the questions. Investigate. Decide. Discern. #HCPSTeach
A3-I make a #scroll out of the text! This allows my s's to see the text (and pictures) in it's entirety (as one continuous piece) Before we read the text, we always do a picture walk & ask Q's, make inferences, & and break the book up into scenes.
@davemiddlebrook#HCPSteach
A3: example: in math I was introducing number bonds. I just showed an image of it and had them talk/read it. Then we discussed what it was and how to use it. Allowing them to discover first. #inquiry#HCPSteach
Searching by images scares me because it allows an appealing picture or flashy info graphic to lend legitimacy to ideas or beliefs that may be hazardous. Teaching information evaluation is more important than ever. #HCPSTeach
A3 Images build interest and engagement around topics. I also think that sometimes concepts in content areas are to hard for some kids to visualize on their own. They need an image as a jumping off point #HCPSteach
A3: Post images/pics on charts around the room.Ss walk&talk&jot down on chart what they notice&wonder. The convo from the images alone is deep and rich;activates&connects background knowledge.Connect that to text&thinking is deepened, confirmed, challenged.Awesome! #hcpsteach
A3. By starting w image Ss have confidence in their own knowledge. They are engaged and ready to add info to their notes. They want to know what comes next. #HCPSTeach
A3: images are a great way to build schema, encourage student talk through questioning, inferring and sharing thoughts and ideas. It really builds a sense of wonder about a topic #HCPSteach
A3: @gfletchy is the great mastermind building student questioning and inferencing skills is KEY to problem solving in math - our kids need visual representation to make connections! Read alouds and schema walks with images should be a daily thing in math class #hcpsteach
I take a page from an animated conversation in a comicbook and remove the text using MS Paint. I ask the students to use the images to inform the text that should be in the bubbles. It’s a great integration of #STEM and ELA. #HCPSTeach
A3: Images can introduce information explicitly or implicitly. An image of the water cycle is very direct & can help students recall background knowledge about rainfall and evaporation. An image depicting a story can help the reader guess what they will be reading. #HCPSteach
A3 I recently saw an image path. Images placed on the floor in a pathway where students could walk, talk, and view together. Will try this out soon myself! #HCPSteach
A1:I am revisiting this question as I just remembered @Verleza is doing research on the use of memes in information warfare (e.g. Russia, ISIS) Images have far-reaching implications. Important for our Ss to understand what they are "seeing&hearing" when they see images.#hcpsteach
Great resources being shared! We use @participate for the transcript which collects all the sites shared so you can save for later #HCPSteach#howiparticipate
A3 understand Ss background and experiences and find an image to connect it... if Suzy's dad is in construction and you're teaching 3D shapes, show a building he built possibly -now they're interested #HCPSteach
A4: I provide images of our final product when we are working on MS Office projects. This helps Ss see the goal as they are working. It also helps them self-check their learning. #HCPSTeach
A4 google image search is a good go to. There are so many filtering options, you can even filter for images for reuse permissions. Such an easy/free resource! #HCPSTeach
A4: Me too--excited to learn from others here! But, always intrigued by the images you create @TannyMcG and would love to be better about creating my own and using to spur others' thinking! #HCPSTeach
A4 Outside! We always find plenty of examples of mathematical applications in real life and .......its beautiful outside right now in FL #HCPSTeach#Don'tBeJealous
A4: @pixabay is my go to for inspirational images. High quality, open sourced images for just about all of my needs. There are "artistic" images as well, so I don't share it with the Ss. #HCPSTeach
A4 A great place to find quick icons (of just about anything!) is The Noun Project. https://t.co/d0omo7N5Jk Over a million icons created by the global community. It’s FREE! #HCPSteach
A3 Just this week worked with a 5th grader and we combined an article, Youtube video and an infographic. There were powerful connections made. We started with the infographic first so there would be at least a little BK. https://t.co/UIyNqoDlyG#hcpsteach
A4: https://t.co/AS34YI4S1s This is the website but there are at least two volumes of these Life images available at the public library. They are A.MA.ZING. #hcpsteach
A4 you can find them@by keeping our eyes open, but I prefer to crowdsource and challenge the students to bring me interesting images. Student voice and student choice will boost engagement. Simple things like that can empower higher order thinking. 🤛💪#HCPSTeach

A4v2 @VOANews has great images from all over the world that are stunning. Also, it’s important to teach about copyright and Creative Commons. Usage rights matter and crediting sources is a good habit. #copyrightnerd#HCPSTeach
A4: We also have a graphic design program at my school. The students can create amazing images if I ask. They love seeing their work in our assignments. #HCPSTeach
A5 I really don’t know how to answer this one. A lot of Ps might view this as kit hard enough because it’s not what they did in school. Can’t wait to see answers! #HCPSTeach
It was actually one of those moments where my colleague and I looked at each other in awe. They saw the single story right away and were INDIGNANT. 😊 #proudmoment#HCPSTeach
A5 I want to host a Parent @EdcampUSA ... visual literacy would make a great session ... and a way parents can support literacy even when they may not be able to read #HCPSteach
A5 show it in action- invite parents in for a specific time/lesson, or if all Ss are media released, film a lesson for them. Not only should Ps see the value but they should celebrate the learning too #HCPSteach
A5 This is a tough one. The biggest hindrance to progress is “That’s not how we’ve always done it” The best way to overcome this is to show the parents data and have the kids show them what they’ve learned. The best proof is results! #HCPSTeach
A5: If your school hosts a literacy night, one of the segments or rotations could address visual literacy. Also, incorporating a visual component in school projects helps parents get involved in visual literacy, even if they don’t know it! #HCPSTeach
A5: My daughter's teacher had each student take turns creating a visual bulletin board about themselves. No words allowed. Each student had to tell about themselves visually. #HCPSTeach
A4: If anyone is doing work about immigration these heat map pics from Richard Moss are "A spectral, almost sci-fi drama of human endurance and survival" #hcpsteachhttps://t.co/dnQkjGn0jM
A5- by teaching their children to respond to powerful images(digital and non-digital!) and use images to add to their thinking. When parents see their children contributing to their own learning, it’s only positive.#HCPSTEACH
Having a hw assign where students talk about illustrations or images from text with an adult at home is a great way to get kids to share their reading life and encourage conversations at home w/out parents feeling like they can’t because they haven’t read the book #HCPSteach
Q5 Well since #visualliteracy skills teach s's how to understand the purpose & meaning of images, Maybe if children gain this understanding, they'll be less likely to be manipulated by ads billboards, even commercials that want to tell them what to buy, how to look etc #HCPSteach
A5: I also think teachers need to read graphic novels themselves... see how they are organized and be metacognitive about them-- How am I processing this text? What am I inferring? How is my thinking enhanced by this (awesome) combination of images & words? #HCPSteach
Only 5 minutes left in our #hcps chat. Time for #HCPSTeach “Share & Show”! Don’t be shy. Tell us about something going on in your classroom that connects with visual literacy.
