Hi everyone, I'm a pre-service teacher at Grove City College in Pennsylvania. Favorite poem is "This Too Shall Pass" by Helen Steiner Rice #gccedu#fledchat
Good evening #fledchat. Lemarr Treadwell, Fresno CA. Adjunct Professor, School of Education, Fresno Pacific University. I plan to build my diverse PLN #followfive new leaders from tonight's chat!
A1: We are all different and unique in the experiences that we have have had. In the classroom, it's the blending of different student's backgrounds together. #gccedu#fledchat

A1: Diversity is people having different experiences. Everyone is diverse and even if a group looks alike, they are are unique because of their different and individual life experiences! #gccedu#fledchat
A2: Diversity in the classroom means not just recognizing the cultural differences each person brings, but also their unique learning needs and goals. #FLedChat
A2: Allowing each learner the freedom to develop and work in a way that suites them best. We have to meet the diverse needs of our students. #gccedu#Fledchat
The Road Not Taken was the first poem I ever analyzed and it truly has shaped my life. I often take the road "less traveled" just to see what everyone else was missing. #FLedChat
A2: In the classroom, students are all different and come from different backgrounds. They also bring uniqueness and different learning styles. #gccedu#Fledchat

A2. Diversity in the classroom means that each kid's uniqueness is honored and that a safe space is created for kids to express their unique experiences and perspectives. #FLedChat
A2. Diversity in the classroom means that each kid's uniqueness is honored and that a safe space is created for kids to express their unique experiences and perspectives. #FLedChat
A3: I try to incorporate diversity in every lesson now. I look for things that my students will recognize and throw in things they don't. Teaching CS I am able to expand tasks to meet their interests/needs. #FLedChat
A3. Incorporating diversity in the classroom means to allow class to celebrate diverse cultures and provide opportunities for Ss to show their learning in multiple ways. #fledchat
A3. I think any time a teacher lets go of control & sets up learning experiences where students have more choice (or even total choice) in how to pursue learning, then that's incorporating diversity. Hasn't happened a lot for me this year, unfortunately. #FLedChat
A3: I loved starting the year with a Multiple Intelligences Assessment. Ss learned that they had more in common with some who look or act different from them, and learned to appreciate other skills/talents. #FLedChat
I teach US History ... much of what we cover is about seeing it from varying perspectives ... how is history affecting different populations ... #fledchat
I would say yes to this. Because inherent within is the ability to choose based on what you know and don’t know; what is common and what is different. #fledchat
#fledchat A3 We were fortunate to have Congressman John Lewis speak with our students a few years ago regarding his role in the civil rights movement. Spoke of his role at Selma, March on Washington and learning from Dr. King. Powerful lesson for our Ss.
A4: #FLedChat is a perfect example. Our diverse backgrounds make the conversation so much deeper. Our desire to understand each other's point of view makes us all stronger. #FLedChat
A4: I think that when we let our students recognize that each and every one of them is unique and diverse, then they can learn to appreciate each other as individuals. #gccedu#Fledchat
I’m a NY transplant in S FL now. @ScarsdaleHS was an amazing place to foster creativity & critical thinking. The mascot was “Bandy,” our yearbook was The Bandersnatch, and every year we had a day long student talent show called Jabberfest! Thought you’d like that as well :)

A4: I think people can feel connected because underneath it all, everyone wants to be respected and appreciated and people are unified in their most basic desires. #gccedu#fledchat
That's an interesting point Dr. McCoy; I have had students discussing current events and would agree with you, specifically events in Orlando too that still are sore.. #fledchat
We have incorporated the #SDGs and student-designed campaigns where students create and establish a platform. Students are changing students' beliefs about things. #fledchat
A4: As a history teacher, the diverse student backgrounds enrich conversations and provide richer classroom discussions by encouraging multiple perspectives and global context. #FLedChat
Q5: In an ideal world, we would walk together as brothers and sisters in the sense that we have in-common characteristics yet possess unique stories, yet value each other. What is your story? #fledchat
#fledchat A4 We added soccer as a varsity sport a few years ago. It has helped to unify our growing Latino population into our school culture. The team has had great success!

A4/5. I draw a lot on the parallel with Biological Diversity. That being the result of local adaptations to a mostly identical set of genetic information. #FLedChat
A5: My story is my entire life. Every chapter is different than the previous one. I love that each of us has a unique story, even twins have individual experiences. #FLedChat
That's wonderful! I am blown away by some of my youngest babies recognizing that things need to change. I want them to feel that they have the power to enact change for the better. #FLedChat
A2: Diversity in classrooms means that learning takes on multiple forms, grades don't limit us, because we assess in multiple ways, we present in multiple ways, we learn in multiple ways, we grow in multiple days. #fledchat
A5: My story has always included being involved with children. I love interacting with them, teaching them, and learning from them. Children inspired me to become a teacher! #gccedu#Fledchat
@Flipgrid really opens the doors and the minds of our students. It does give purpose and meaning to what our students want and need to say. #fledchat There is an audience.

A5: A small part of my story is that I am new to the education field and am excited to become a teacher of impact! Above all that, I am first and most importantly a child of God. #gccedu#fledchat
A5: My story has always included being involved with children. I love interacting with them, teaching them, and learning from them. Children inspired me to become a teacher! #gccedu#Fledchat
Aww thank you! I have never once regretted my decision to major in elementary and special education. One of the best decisions of my life! #gccedu#Fledchat
Q6: Our students have stories just as we do though they may be at the beginning. How do we empower our students to see and celebrate their diversity as well as others? #fledchat
A6: We plan for it. We make the sharing of their stories a part of the lesson plan. We encourage them by making it an expected activity in our classes. Share your projects. Tell what you liked about it. #FLedChat

A6: I think that, as teachers, we should be pointing out the strengths of each individual student. We should also be celebrating different cultures in a positive way! #gccedu#Fledchat

A6. Invite students to share from their cultures and their interests. They may be surprised by things they have in common & may just learn a thing or two from their differences! #FLedChat
With tools like Microsoft translator I'm able to communicate with All my students and their parents. we have 76 different cultures in my district. #fledchat
Q7: Perhaps there were similarities and differences in our responses tonight. That’s diversity. Diversity of opinion or perspective. What is your opinion perspective on diversity in schools and classrooms and how to move it forward? #fledchat
Q6: We can empower our students by celebrating their differences and work to understand their background and where they are coming from. #gccedu#fledchat
A7: Diversity within classrooms is something that we, as teachers, need to acknowledge and respect. We shouldn't dismiss it, but celebrate in the fact that each of us is made special with our own talents that we can bring to the table. #gccedu#Fledchat
A7: One step at a time. One Day at a time. One student at a time. I (we) can all start with broadening one student's idea or perspective of diversity & developing appreciation of others. If you don't know @Belouga_ I highly recommend it as a tool in the classroom! #fledchat
A7: Diversity is in every classroom and it enhances the learning environments and grows our students. We can move it forward by delighting in our students differences and celebrating individuality! #gccedu#Fledchat
A7. I think that first we need to find ways to develop our students' understanding and appreciation of individual differences. If that means deliberately delaying curriculum at the beginning of the year to build classroom culture, so be it. #MaslowBeforeBlooms#FLedChat
I'd like to thank you for sharing tonight, your perspectives, your opinions, your stories. Life would not be the same without the #powerofyou! #fledchat Signing off!
