Yesterday, a colleague said “we all need to keep things fresh, or they become boring to teach and boring to learn” which got me thinking about our #scitlap topic for tonight…
Phil from Northern, VA. My favorite Christmas carol would probably be Joy to the World. Love my tradition of collecting nutcrackers. I have a few dozen, they are a lot of fun to look at. #scitlap
I'm Lori, from ATL. a FUN tradition happened this week as I broke out the Chanukah decor and fried latkes for my book club (even though Chanukah is 2 weeks out...) #scitlap
Hi I’m Molly! I’m a pre-service t studying at Grove City College in Grove City, PA. I love spending time with family on Christmas & my favorite holiday song is Silent Night #scitlap
Meggan from Central/South Texas, Favorite? I like the jazz/old versions of many carols... also, maybe secretly the cheech & chong Christmas song... #scitlap
A1: Trying new things (as long as they make sense)- changing your delivery or including something you just came up while driving to school with because of last night's news. #scitlap
Science is all new content with the shifts but I think content should always feel fresh because it should be updated every year to make it better and adapted to individual students you have each year #scitlap
A2: Investigation of the human body systems is ripe for a more innovative, data-driven approach. With the plethora of sensors and research, a deeper dive than just naming the organs could be easily achieved. #scitlap
I have a great "cell choice" project for 7th grade. Kids can go with standard "build a cell", "write a song", or create a cell metaphor. LOTS of success. #scitlap
I can’t say that I really like teaching different preps but I will say that it helps keep me fresh. I am able to take ideas from one content and put int in the other. #scitlap
A3: Earth science is ripe for engineering challenges that use information to create products that rectify or lessen the impact of natural disasters. #scitlap
A3: Tx has a 6th standard that asks them to memorize the % of elements in the crust, atmosphere, humans & oceans. Also, memorize plate names. This is a memory test.. not science literacy! #scitlap
Natural resources and the discussion on renewable resources as viable alternatives through energy production design challenges could foster some awesome discussions about feasibility. #scitlap
We do an elemental scavenger hunt so that the Ss realize what elements are most present. It is fun when they start to see the patterns. They don’t know percentages, but they see patterns. #scitlap
Okay, I'm thinking of another bucket list item....green-screens. Research any area in the world really affected by erosion and "report" about it via the green screen. #scitlap
I saw a devastating video of a landslide in Sri Lanka that made me think of it. Will need to be careful instill compassion to pull it off. Sad stories, but deforestation was the cause. #scitlap
They have that cool circuit tape. I went to a session where we created get well cards for kids at a children's hospital in Memphis...while learning about LED lights and open/closed circuits. BAM #scitlap
A4: Last year, @KRScienceLady gave me the idea to frame magnetism and electricity under the idea of ENERGY. I just keep going back to the idea of ENERGY. Not so worried about the names of circuits. #scitlap
We did do a lab once where we put plants under red light and blue light to see if there was any difference in the growth rate. It was interesting for the kids but totally spectrum free. #scitlap
My teachers did some interesting labs with cinnamon on water and a screw in wood to demo wind currents in the hemisphere. Its good to have some concrete examples. #scitlap
A5) networking with other teachers; attending conferences; subscribe to podcasts/TedTalks. Beg borrow and steal successful lessons and drop the ones that bomb. #scitlap
A5: I've been going to trainings with @BSCSorg science stays fresh for me when I focus on student thinking and student ideas. There are always new misconceptions. #scitlap
A5 Twitter, Pinterest, TpT, sharing ideas, talking to kids about what they want, Genius Hour. Balance of tech/traditional. You gotta do the work (fun work) #scitlap
A5: For me the science concepts only changes a little yr to yr, keeping it fresh for me happens when I have different kids/personalities. I'm in it for the kids! #scitlap
A6: Student Choice Menu for Waves!
MakerSpace for Longitudinal/Transverse Waves
Pasta Bridge Design
Roller Coaster Design
More #PBL this year! #scitlap
Q6 Spending a lot time hooking myself this year, but it is going pretty well and I am able to keep lessons engaging. My fav has been letting Ss have control on some things. #scitlap
A6: Adding gamified elements to class has encouraged all students to get involved and contribute. This layer of organization has kept students invested even if they aren’t as enamored with the topic. #scitlap
A6: I'm spending so much more time questioning students and following up my questions with what do you mean by _____. Can you say more about your ideas? #scitlap
A6) Reflecting on lessons, building upon what worked by incorporating ideas from others! I did a cell campaign (found in a fb group) that my students got SUPER into #Scitlap
I sure didn't check the spacing of the q's tonight. OOPS! As a side note, anyone want to try moderating in January or February? We like to keep an 8(ish) week rotation and are ALWAYS looking for new hosts! #scitlap
A7: I’m currently reading #eXPlorelikeapirate from @mrmatera as a refresh on my gamified classroom. Not directly associated with content, but nurtures favorable elements of classroom culture that makes content more accessible. #scitlap
They are on my weekly list. I highly recommend them. There is also a slow chat #XPLAPcamp. @supervxn is wanting to start a science xplap slow chat. Reach out to her if you are interested. #scitlap
