Hi there, Pedro Lealdino, from Brazil. Ph.D. student in Mathematics Education at the Université Claude Bernard - Lyon, France. Working on the subject of games, creativity and computer science. it's a pleasure participating in the @mathsweek this year again! #edchatie
Tonight on #edchatie we're discussing #mathsweek with @mathsweek
Here's Question 1: How do you use #Mathsweek to introduce new ideas to the classroom or to try something new?
#edchatie The learnstorm challenge was good using @khanacademy. It hasnt run for a couple of years now. I remember students telling me it really boosted their confidence in mathematics.
Looking to speak to CSPE, Religious Education and Politics & Society teachers about how they discuss/teach abortion and the #8thRef for an article #edchatie
Keep an eye for the first changeover in questions soon as we leave Q.1 and over quickly on to Q.2 (feel free to add more Q.1 answers if you like though)
#edchatie#mathweeek
Primary SET.
Q1. If nothing else #mathsweek encourages me to make sure my maths displays are clear, fresh and legible. It also gives me pause for thought regarding my methods. #iusemaths#edchatie
Hi there, I am Christian Mercat from Lyon, France. A very popular activity on Celtic knots brings together arts history and math of course https://t.co/rbxpSND0fO it will be once again featured in #mathsweek#edchatie
With @mathsweek in the media it’s a great way to get the whole school involved - using maths in home economics, maths in art, sport #edchatie#mathsweek
I'm an Art Teacher myself, working with @NCCAie on Art curricula, so thanks for posting that.
If you see Jean-Charles Charbanne in your University, please do say hello from me. He was over ehre a few weeks ago.

I like the #iusemaths poster that mentions a dress maker needing maths to measure out the fabric required. It brought the fabric & fibre strand from primary visual art curriculum to mind, which I hadn't considered before as an option for maths integration. #MathsWeek#edchatie
We're nearly halfway through tonight's special #edchatie discussion for #mathsweek2018. It's a takeover by @Mathsweek tonight so join in!
Keep an eye out for the changeover to question 3 in a couple of minutes
#edchatie Many schools introducing #stem short courses, shows the application of maths. Would also say Coding/Computer Science shows students practical applications of many concepts.
#edchatie Students compartmentalise subjects. In coding I like to give them a question like 2+2*3=. Nearly all the students will say 12 then when they run it they see 8 remember BOMDAS but never think of it first because it's 'maths' and this is coding.
There’s so many ways in which we use maths, sometimes without even noticing. It’s great to see all different aspects from dress making to styling hair or training and exercising! #edchatie
#edchatie#mathsweek Quickly popping into tonight's discussion to say Hello, and to hope many interested in @mathsweek will also be interested in our evidence-based special event next October. Do follow - thanks! https://t.co/y2tn8xzLm9
#edchatie Q3: Coding!!!! Pretty much everything is problem solving and the vast majority is using maths. Decomposition.. developing algorithms... debugging it's ALL problem solving.
oh that's a good one!! Binay Code, Fake Binary Code and Op Art activities. You can find all them in the #MathsWeek#edchatie . I don't have the link to all of them right now, but in a moment!
True and it’s important to see that there are many different ways to solve problems - we should be aware of that and also that sometimes more than one way lead to the correct solution #edchatie@fboss
It’s @mathsweek in Killowen! Remember to check your child’s bag each night and get involved as a family by helping with the “Challenge of the Day” There are lots of house points and prizes up for grabs! https://t.co/nZTHZF36j3#explorexcitexcel
Have a student you're struggling with?
Try the 'two-by-ten' strategy:
For two minutes each day, 10 days in a row, have a personal conversation with the #student about anything the student is interested in.
Wonderful idea by Raymond Wlodkowski
Here comes the last question for tonight's special #edchatie takeover for #mathsweek by @mathsweek and it's . . .
Q4: Huge shortage of maths teachers. Why is there no one to take up higher level leaving cert maths positions?
Here comes the last question for tonight's special #edchatie takeover for #mathsweek by @mathsweek and it's . . .
Q4: Huge shortage of maths teachers. Why is there no one to take up higher level leaving cert maths positions?
We're into the final question of tonight's #edchatie for #mathsweek2018 with @Mathsweek ->
Q4: Huge shortage of maths teachers. Why is there no one to take up higher level leaving cert maths positions?
We're into the famous, final five minutes of tonight's special #edchatie for #mathsweek by @Mathswweek
Any last thoughts, ideas, solutions, problems (want to "sum" up tonight :-) ?
yes - but why do you have to do the multiply bit ahead of the addition bit?
What's the reasoning behind that, I'm wondering?
