Good Morning #bfc530 Kevin 7th gr history teacher from NW NJ recently returned from an awesome weekend trip w/my daughters & dad to Cooperstown and the @baseballhall
#bfc530 Good kind of loud- whenever we do hands on work. When they start talking about their project and showing what they can do, it gets very noisy. Productive chaos!
My classroom is the good kind of loud when students are having impassioned discussions with their partners. It’s the good kind of quiet when they’re deeply involved in expressing the stories, images, and ideas that matter to them through writing. #bfc530

The answer may be the same for me... highly engaged, passionate and creative students can cause classrooms to be both the good kind of loud and quiet depending on the work taking place. #bfc530
A good kind of loud involves engagement. All students are working diligently on an activity or collaborately to solve a problem. A good kind of quiet takes place during silent reading when all you hear are paper pages whisking as they turn. #bfc530
The kind of loud I like is when students have a noisy reaction to something that we’re reading. It shows me they’re emotionally invested in the literature, which is one of the most important goals in my ELA class. #bfc530
We should, more often, consider this in our practice. Is quiet really compliance or boredom? How can you tell? How do we teach that to new teachers? #bfc530
Loud is when we debate the meaning of comic book panels, hip hop lyric annotations, creating comics to superhero music, putting Napoleon on trial #bfc530

That is the answer. Best noise is when they are working together to figure out @breakoutEDU or a problem/question. Positive discussion about news and lit. Quiet means listening to each other or taking the standardized test. #bfc530
Good noise includes discussion, laughing, music, clapping, etc. Noise shows a classroom is alive. Thankfully I have had great "neighbors" over the years that appreciate my style & recognize it is good for the students #bfc530

Mine is the great kind of loud (much to the dismay of my across the hall neighbor who likes quiet!) but the kids are engaged, discussing, relationships are happening, and learning is happening! #bfc530

good morning #bfc530 gang - being a #librarian means you hear everybody's perceptions of noisy & quiet, and exactly what those are supposed to indicate
We are usually a class filled with voices and exclamations. However, I love it when a child is speaking and the others are quiet and really listening. #bfc530
Good quiet is when we have learned about something so profound, so emotional, that there are just no words for a few moments. Gives me goosebumps when I see the expression on their faces when the understanding washes over them. #bfc530

I feel that our classroom is the good kind of loud most of the time...learning, exploration, inquiry, collaboration is happening all day long! Occasional reminders, due to excitement levels, are sometimes necessary. #bfc530
A few years ago, I did an independent study with a student who wanted to learn more about her auditory processing disorder. Together, we learned that students with APD or ADHD often need total silence to concentrate on a difficult task. #bfc530
Thanks Eric. I thought you were going to mention that Im not wearing a Met hat (I was going for diversity in cap wear there, my Dad has on an old St Louis Browns hat) #bfc530
Good kind of loud: when they're in groups, discussing, debating, sharing
Good kind of quiet: when they're reflecting, working on a self-selected task, moving thru choice activities #bfc530
Good kind of loud: when we do centers & kids are having fun interacting & creating. Good kind of quiet: when the kids are really involved with independent activity—such as research—about something they want to know about. #bfc530
Hey #bfc530 friends! Long time since the last time I’ve been able to join you all. I have five minutes to chat before I get ready. Hope you all are doing well.

Always! It's the gauge I uses to ensure the students are truly collaborating, sharing ideas, helping one another solve problems, etc. If it isn't, my favorite saying is "It's too quiet in here!" #bfc530
Good morning! Good loud is what I call, “Working noise.” Chatter, but focused & on task. Not-so-good is the kind of social talk that gets louder and louder when there’s that ‘loss of control’ moment - technology issue, interruption - during that ‘what’s next’ moment #bfc530
When I ask students for total silence during writing tasks, we talk about how some students need it in order to work, and that the work is hard. For many of them, silence becomes an act of empathy instead of compliance. It’s not perfect, but it does make a difference. #bfc530
Good morning everyone. The good kind of loud is when everyone is actively engaged and the quiet when Ss are thinking actively listening to what their peer have to say during discussions. #BFC530
I think you can tell by what the Ss are doing, how they look. Whispering off-task conversation, heads down on desks, (quietly) distracting others are quiet signs of disengaged learners. Doesn't matter if it's boredom or compliant. #bfc530
Good kind of quiet, when students are contemplating/reflecting on a serious theme, considering if an action was just or unjust, right or wrong. Uncomfortable stillness can motivate minds to noble ideals. #bfc530
I don’t think silence is often necessary, requiring it sets up a battle I don’t want to have. Productive volume, where everyone is able to think/work, that’s what I aim for! #BFC530
Loud is when we debate the meaning of comic book panels, hip hop lyric annotations, creating comics to superhero music, putting Napoleon on trial #bfc530
I even feel like during independent reading or read a loud there is always some noise. Someone shocked at what is happening in the book or laughing at it or showing someone etc #bfc530

Loud-When Ss are actively engage in a discussion, project, game, etc
Quiet-When Ss are really trying to concentrate on something-could be a math problem. #bfc530
Sometimes when all the groups at their boards get quiet it helps to alert me that most groups are stuck and it might be a good time to call them all over & offer a minute or two of direct teaching as needed.

We are running a few “practice sessions” in class for our standardized tests which are being done online for the first time. The quiet feel oppressive on those days. #bfc530

Good kind of loud: when you can feel the excitement. When kids are laughing and talking and working together to solve problems.
Good kind of quiet: reflection and the individual time to really think.
#bfc530
I struggle myself w/total silence, I dont focus as well, I need background noise (ex. right now the TV is running although Im not paying attention) Some Ss are like me, others need quiet. Need to remind myself & those like me of empathy during times needed for quiet. #bfc530
“Productive volume” – that’s a brilliant phrase. As students are about to start a task we could ask, “What would be a productive volume for this activity? What will the room sound like if it’s going well?” #bfc530
Wonderful that they recognized your style, acknowledging that it is legitimate, and accommodated you. Not many districts would do that. Shows you are valued! #bfc530@historycomics@CoachKCullen

I am definitely a person yhat needs. Little noise to work. I opt for white noise in the classroom if they're taking a test so it isn't TOO silent. I also have noise cancelling headphones for Ss that need the silence #bfc530
We need to understand the difference between purposeful noise and off-task noise. I visited a school once that boasted that they had silent music classrooms. T monitored Ss playing via a headset. My Qs, what is the point when Music is meant to be an expressive art.
#bfc530
Good loud = excitement about their questions and ideas; student voices, actions, and feedback celebrations Good quiet = enveloped in their own work and ideas so much so that the world has disappeared #bfc530

When classrooms are noisy with energized collaboration, it is awesome. Quiet and reflective silence can show the impact of new thinking or understanding. #BFC530
We have recently ‘discovered’ the value of silence, in our classroom, when students are focused on reading independently ...you could hear a pin drop! It’s become an exciting moortant practice for us...only lasting about 3 minutes at a time! 😊 #bfc530
I have one class who doesn't quite get the "quiet and actively listening" part. Continual reminders that listening is part of learning as much as sharing is. 6th grade is still young, and not all are ready for that leap to MS at the same time... #bfc530

This discussion reminds me of A Knight’s Tale and the importance of words #bfc530https://t.co/SvgrCGLpiK. So funny. Loved showing parts of this movie in class.
Wow! That was quick and amazing. You’re all geared up starting your teaching days and now I’m going to have to try to fall asleep. 😴. Happy Monday to you. #bfc530
The good kind of loud is when they’re discussing what a photo is before we begin every unit. The good quiet is when I can tell they’re intent on their #hyperdocs#bfc530
Not a school in the system I work for! The Principal couldn’t see the issue, even though most other subjects were collaborative. No student took elective Music in Grades 9-12. As one who was teaching some Music classes in grades 7&8 at my school, very sad! #bfc530
Highly recommend the Guava Chicken with Bamboo Rice at Hula Grill Waikiki @hulagrillwaiks Thanks to the wait staff especially Racquel on Sunday and Kat on Wednesday. #bfc530
I always liked to have a busy & productive classroom - lots of movement/ grp work. Because of that, when I assigned individual work time, I asked for quiet for the Ss who needed it to work; being mindful of the introverts was impt to me. This was always “good quiet.” #bfc530
Hey #bfc530 !! My loud is when Ss are discussing, questioning, collaborating. My quiet is typically during individual practice along with lecture and tests.
I often give Ss a sticky note on which to write one or two key words/terms that come to mind as they prepare their thinking. After T&T, they can add a sentence or two to the sticky note. The sticky note can serve them for their notes, or me as Assessment For learning;) #bfc530
