#5thchat is for people interested in chatting about topics in education, especially as they relate to Grade 5. The goal is to connect people who enjoy learning & sharing, plus supporting & creating partnerships worldwide!
A1: Of course it will! This will help a wide array of students with different interests and learning styles be more interested and eventually help their cognitive skills as well. We can ensure this by having many different types of tech options in the class #5thchat
A1: tech shouldn’t be just digital 📝 Ss should be accessing info they don’t already have access to, creating new things, collaborating w/new people #5thchat
A1. Oh yes it will. To ensure that it happens, we have to connect tech to the SAMR model and make sure that we are not having them do task that are replacing the paper versions, but being inventive with tech. #5thchat
A1- Yes it will! Students can work on interactive websites, breakouts, Nearpod presentations, etc. to keep their minds engaged in the lesson and teach them how to problem solve. #5thchat
A1: Integrating technology should be used to help enhance the lesson, as long as your are not using it to replace a worksheet it will enhance any lesson. If it is same just a worksheet on steroids then nope it won't enhance #5thchat
A1 Yes, #edtech will provide opportunities to develop cognitive and problem solving skills when integrated with purpose and intent. Collaboration and reflection need to be part of the picture. #5thchat
A1 I follow the https://t.co/QkufhXpH2I framework— will the tech engage, enhance, extend learning? Is curriculum solid? Then add tech. => @lkolb#5thchat
RT @T_HEB: A1 Yes, #edtech will provide opportunities to develop cognitive and problem solving skills when integrated with purpose and intent. Collaboration and reflection need to be part of the picture. #5thchat
A1 The biggest piece is of integrating Tech is to make sure it serves an actual purpose. Make sure it’s not tech just for tech’s sake. Think SAMR or similar models. #5thChat
A1: I think that incorporating technology in my classroom will definitely help with problem solving skills. Incorporating things like iPads for the students to use learning games or even having the option to listen to text could be helpful. #5thChat
However, the classic SAMR model leads people to think it is a race to the top. If integration is to be purposeful it needs to fluctuate. I prefer the swimming pool model. https://t.co/LsQD94sQiO#5thchat#edtechchat
Here is the SAMR model showing the different ways tech can be used in instruction, from low end, substituting the regular way of completing a task, to redefinition, thinking outside of the box. #5thchat
Tech can definitely crease learning and problem solving if used with intention. Teachers are able to allow their students to access the world and have a global audience. We need to be providing more than a video game experience. #5thchat
1A: Technology is a tool to transform teaching and student learning. How is what you are doing is different from 2 yrs, 5yr, or even 10 yrs ago. Technology provides an even playing field for all students. It is an equalizer. #5thchat
We can insure this by always leaving our students options. They eventually find something they prefer/enjoy using and they could use it more often in or out of the class. It is so question that students love learning new things, so this will keep them excited! #5thchat
A2 I find that #edtech does keep Ss engaged. Integration brings relevance to our classroom. Their learning matches their world. Amplifying their voice through tech further empowers our learners (podcasts, blogs, tweets). #5thchat#edtechchat
A2: It will as long as it is meaningful. Students are typically tech interested, so pulling to interests will always bring engagement and interest. Need it to be something worth doing, tech wont save a bad lesson #5thchat
A1 You have to place pedagogy first. How does the #edtech used will help you to meet the learning need? Think about its purpose and the desired outcome. #5thchat
A2: Several ways can help, find new ways to present information, let them take control of "figuring out" how it works. Like using @ABCyaGames to let them create Vocab words #5thchat#GIFvocab
A2 - Depends on how the tec is used and the T's excitement. Combine it with offering choice, connecting to real world applications, and don't overuse. I try to use a variety of tools b/c not everything appeals to everyone. #5thchat
A3: I think that teachers can find their own techniques when incorporating technology. For example, many teachers may use a SmartBoard, but have different activities and uses for it in their own class. #5thChat
A3: Personalizing lessons is always a great option for teachers. Every classroom works and learns differently, as well as every student. If the amount and types of tech are personalized for the class, learning will be much easier #5thchat
A2: Technology is a great tool to help with student engagement. But, also giving students voice and choice when creating is essential to increase student motivation. #5thchat
A2: absolutely! Ss should be able to use what they know..increased motivation and desire to work using this format..again tech activities should be meaningful #5thchat
Nearpod is an interactive Powerpoint where everyone has the same presentation on a mobile device, when the T moves to the next slide so does the Ss's. It has many different features of formative assessment throughout the lesson (multiple choice, short-answer, draw, etc) #5thchat
A3: Ss with choice and the ability to add their own voice and image make it very personal. A video reflection, or "how to" to show understanding is a great way to go #5thchat
A3: tech is a great way to provide multiple entry points - videos, texts, different leveled sites, personalized activities through google classroom #5thchat
A3. Yes, I think different tech apps and educational websites make it much easier to personalize education. We have lots of information available to use via the "old" way of digging through piles of resource books to get the personalize ed. #5thchat
A3 Personalized learning is one of the many great things about tech. Ss have ownership, set goals, make plans, build their learning plan. Make sure Ss explain how the tech is going to help get them to their goal. #5thchat
A2 It depends on how #edtech is used. Sometimes we use technology when it is not needed thus hindering the learning experience and our Ss potential. #5thchat
A3: Yes give them choice example we took our leveled readers and I let Ss choose which book to read then they "read and roll" and choose to present #5thchat
A3 Learning can be personalized without #edtech. However, integration opens up new pathways to success & removes barriers to lrng. Personalized menus, T created videos, backchannels, and plenty of choice. #5thchat
A3: Yes! If you have a good LMS that provides completion rules for Ss. It makes it possible for your Ss to self-pace through a unit or a topic. Students take assessments when they feel they are ready. Not when the teacher thinks all students are ready. @Schoology#5thchat
Q2- Yes! Technology is something that gets kids so excited. I think that anything having to do with a screen will make any child want to participate and learn. We can pick fun activities and switch up the activities so that the Ss don't get bored of the same tech tools. #5thchat
A3: Yes, but when doing PBL, Ts need to make sure they leave room for creativity and don't just give a checklist. Let Ss bring their own strengths. I give menu options, we use @Seesaw and let the Ss choose the tool. #5thchat
A3 Absolutely! You can start by empowering Ss to take charge of their learning, pique their curiosity by having them offer up #edtech suggestions. You'll be amazed how much they know but we have to ask. #5thchat
A3 Best personalization technique is to encourage S creativity. Ts need to release some control. Let lego creations or a one word poster become the springboard to reflecting understanding. #5thchat#CreateWithPurpose
It doesn’t have to! Many teachers nowadays fall victim to leaning on technology too much. This often happens bc the students know more about the tech than they do. If a teacher takes the time to learn and balance out their lesson, it will seem like it never changed. #5thchat
A4 hopefully the integration of technology will enhance your pedagogy! Good teaching and curriculum should come first. Technology is a road to help you guide Ss to the end goal. #5thchat
I think that technology integration would affect my teaching practices. I hope to work with special-needs children and hope to be able to track down as much assistive technology as I can to enhance my students' learning experience. #5thChat
A4 Only if you fall into the "bells and whistles" trap. IMHO, the best Ts are those who can teach w/o little or no #edtech but demonstrate genuine care and interest about the subject at hand. #5thchat
A4 Tech integration will change teaching practice. It is unavoidable as #edtech tools have the power to improve teaching and lrng but it should not change the foundation of teaching philosophy. #5thchat
A4: Maybe...but understanding teaching and student learning encompassed with good instruction and technology integration is priceless. As Emeril would say..."Kicking it up a Notch!" #5thchat
A4: I think that technology integration would affect my teaching practices. I hope to work with special-needs children and hope to be able to track down as much assistive technology as I can to enhance my students' learning experience. #5thChat
Agreed, all Ts like their learners are different and we should not put everyone in a box specially when it comes to the integration of #edtech for instruction. #5thchat
A4: I think teaching pedagogy comes first. I know I want my classroom to be student-centered, and technology is just one way to help me accomplish that goal. I do get reenergized when I see new ideas though. #5thchat
Bingo! Learning is about relationships and making a connection with your learners. Technology can help but it will never replace the human touch; the caring heart of a Teacher. #5thchat
I think technology can be very beneficial to students and should be integrated in the classroom. However, I believe tech should enhance ones teaching and the students learning. Using technology in the classroom should help us teach instead of becoming the way we teach. #5thchat
We have to stop looking at technology as an add-on or an extra. It is an integral part of the world our students live in, and they will NEED technology skills. Many of our students will even CREATE the technology of the future. #EdTech#DitchBook#TLAP#KidsDeserveIt#ETcoaches
A5: I think that there are forms of technology to fit every type of learner. Students that are behind can get extra practice, and students that might be ahead can accelerate their learning through technology. #5thChat
A5: That is one of the beauties of tech; it can appeal to several learning styles. It can also help everyone feel involved without putting anyone on the spot for shy students in the class. #5thchat
A5 Yes! but you got to know them first, establish a rapport and let them share their diverse cultural backgrounds, values and beliefs to foster understanding of one another. That is is OK to be different and that when it comes to #edtech there is something for everyone. #5thchat
A5: In my classroom, each students is using a tech tool to help them be successful within the classroom setting. Accessibility features on the iPad and Read & Write app provide an equal playing fields for ALL students. #5thchat
A6: Since some parents are still behind on the tech trend, it is always going to be a little more difficult. There are many tech based ways to connect with the parents and make sure they know what’s in the class, but some still may be hesitant to use it. #5thchat
A5: Yes! Tech tools are a great way to get every kind of learner involved. I also think that every kid responds to technology esp living in the 21st C #5thchat
A6: I think that if parents are familiar with technology, they would be able to assist. However, it is the teacher's job to make sure students are comfortable with said technology before assigning at-home projects. #5thChat
A5: Technology is so helpful for diverse learners. Ts and Ss creating visuals, text to speech, speech to text. @Flipgrid with ELL students and those that have difficulty putting thoughts into writing. So many possibilities. #5thchat
A6 Yes, but we need to engage Ps and make them partners in the learning experience. Start by keeping them informed & provide as much information as possible about the #edtech you plan to use in the classroom. #5thchat
A6. Involving parents is an area we need to work on. As more apps are availble to share information to parents, we also need to make sure we are taking the time to educate our parents too. It is not the same school they went to as kids. #5thchat
A6: Yes! Parents, if they know how to use the tech, will be able to help their children. When I have my own classroom one day, I will try to contact the parents through a tech tool (bloomz, remind, etc) and explain the assignment to them so that they can help their child #5thchat
A6: I would hope Ss would be able to teach their parents. Tech shouldn't be a barrier. I make myself available to help. I've walked parents through steps on the phone, recorded example videos @Screencastify#5thchat
A7: It really depends on how the teacher uses it and how the students respond. There are many subjects that need technology to teach accurately, like science. With others like math, it can be helpful, but more students respond by doing more of the work traditionally #5thchat
Q7: Definitely! There is tech available for every grade and every subject area. Nearpod is an awesome tool for this, as well as other interactive websites and whiteboards #5thchat
A7 The first question should always be, How will technology help to meet the standard? If you can't answer it. Talk to your next door Ts and join a Twitter chat like this one to find what works or has not for other Ts. #5thchat
A7: Project-based learning in various academic areas.. Allowing students to create projects using tech tools of their choice. Must think about incorporating the 4 C's - create, collaborate, communicate, and critical thinking skills. #5thchat
A7: Yes! A universal goal should be for Ss to express/explain their learning and thought process, and there are many ways to do this. For example, Ss record vid of their music piece or how to solve a math problem, create mind maps for diff topics, etc. #5thchat
A8: If the tech your using is internet or computer based, there’s always going to be little sneaks trying to take advantage of it. in a time like 5th grade, kids get curious and rebellious. If you’re using the Internet, make sure your school has good security blocks #5thchat
A8: When using technology, students could over-explore the internet, leading to things like predators and cyber-bullying. Teachers should be proactive about making sure students know internet safety. #5thChat
A8- It is very important to make sure that the students know how to be safe on the internet. I think that b4 any tech stuff is done in the classroom, Ts need to have a "internet safety" day where Ts discuss what information is never to be shared on the internet w/ the Ss #5thchat
A8 Privary, Cyberbullying, FERPA, and CIPA come to mind here. However, we should always model what right looks like if we are to nurture our Ss as global citizens of the world. Blocking everything is not the answer... #5thchat
A8 ... and if it is ask yourself, What will my learners do once they leave my classroom? We can build walled gardens at school but the real world is a whole different story. Our job is to prepare them for that! #5thchat
A8: The internet gives the ability to connect with others around the world, which can be great, but approach with caution. Some platforms allow control of sharing S work. Ts can also look for other classes to connect with through tools like twitter, seesaw, flipgrid. #5thchat
You should see my email account. I tell my students I am ALL knowing. I know when you post. I see it on my iPad, Computer, phone, and yes my iWatch. 🤣 #5thchat
