A1 -- As I might have said to some of you before:
Flipping solved multiple problems for me. If I find something that solves those problems better, then I will bail from #flipclass ... but 5+ years later, here I am!
A1: Started flipping out of necessity. Try-out #20Time#geniushour one semester & ran out of time for the course. Flipped to vids for the sake of time. Worked-out pretty well so I remade a lot of vids, revised the structure of group space and it took off from there. #flipclass
A1 the tech was certainly what made it possible - the students who made flipping attractive would not have taken in direct instruction from a textbook. #flipclass#flipclasschat
#flipclass#flipclasschat so funny that picture of aaron sams, he was discussing it one night at fliptech East coast and making fun of his youth and lack of glasses, wrinkles, etc
A1: hey #FlipClass#flipclasschat lindsay, instructional coach from Ks. When I flipped my class is was a personal drive to find a better way to reach all students in their learning process where they were instead of teaching to the large group as a whole.
Q2. What do you think is coming in terms of technology and how do you see it affecting the way you flip your classrooms? AI, robotics, automation, etc. #flipclass#flipclasschat
A1 my primary reason to start #flipclass in my classroom was to prove it didn't work, then to deal with the absentee issues associated with a tradtitional class #flipclasschat but it became a solution to so much more!
That's so funny because I came at #flipclass from the opposite angle: "Here is what I think I should do, now how the hell can I get enough tech devices to make it work?!"
A1: Receiving devices drove me to figure out what I should do with them - Learned about flipping from an #EdTechTeamOnline cohort last summer. #FlipClassChat
A1 I missed the keynote being referenced so not sure if I’m interpreting “drives” right. The impetus for the flip (once I learned about it) was a class who worked well during work time but who could not NOT interrupt me and get off track during a lesson. #flipclass#flipclasschat
It will be absolutely transformative for you and your Ss. I gained so much more quality f2f/group time with my kids. They could never get the experiences they now get pre-flip. #flipclass
A2: I think the constant growth in technology will increase the teaching of skills such as adapting and open up the ways students can demonstrate learning. #flipclass#flipclasschat
Q2. What do you think is coming in terms of technology and how do you see it affecting the way you flip your classrooms? AI, robotics, automation, etc. #flipclass#flipclasschat
A2: I hope/expect that 3D videos will become easier to create and access in the next 10 years (maybe five?)
Not quite sure what I would do with that advancement, but we'll figure it out!
#flipclass#flipclasschat
So glad you are joining us this evening @MrSmithMath10 on #flipclass don't be afraid to ask questions or share as you have a group of pretty awesome flippers in the chat this eveing. #flipclasschat
A1 - What drove me to flipclass was a very bad winter in which we had 17 calamity days. I found out about #flipclass on one of those snow days. By moving lectures to videos, I gained 50 instructional days.
A1 - #FlipClassChat#flipclass - Repeating the same lecture on poem metalanguage made me realise I could record it and allow more freedom to think and interact with Ss!
I really *hope* that you are right: the direction of tech advancement will be toward students' needs rather than other more nefarious directions....
#flipclass#flipclasschat
A1: Hey #flipclasschat Lucas, HS sci teacher from VA (chat newbie). I discovered #flipclass observing a school with 1:1 for my own district. Ironically, my observation was the teacher interaction Ss in class, with the tech barely visible. The tech was a tool, not central focus
I chose the most direct instructed thing I taught, grammar. YouTube was my main go to. A good headset w good mic. And I would look at templates for students to follow, I used a unit pacing chart so they had an idea of where to be #flipclass#FlipClassChat
No, it was pretty much me pooping my pants when I looked at the calendar and saw how much further I wanted to go with my kids. We didn't go 1:1 until the following year, which made it that much easier. #flipclass
Tip would be: Go easy on the tech... not too many tools. And if you can do it on pen and paper more effectively, just do it that way. #flipclass#flipclasschat
Would like to meet @bakerhhhs some day. I have flipped my Gen Bio, Hon Bio, Phys Sci, and APBio classes. Will get to A&P at some time. Would love to get insight on how you run your course. #flipclass
A2: I think augmented reality and VR are the next steps, especially in medical training. There are some pretty awesome #anatomy#physiology 3D experiences out there. #flipclass
A2: I can see AI impacting formative assessment, making assessing even quicker and easier; perhaps facilitating personalized pathways or guidance for remediation/retraining. #flipclass#flipclasschat
This year we had the opportunity to be a part of Google Expeditions. A representative came out to our school and brought devices and our classes went on AR tours. Planets & Dinosaurs were the themes my Ss had fun with - It was like a new "hands-on" experience. #FlipClassChat
For one thing I have simplified the video creation -- much less use of greenscreen!
I don't assess Ss understanding with multiple-choice GoogleForms anymore, like when I started.
Using an LMS in year 2 really helped with organization
#flipclass#flipclasschat
A2: in the shortterm I would have to agree with Quim Sabria founder of @edpuzzle in our discussion 2 wks ago he believes future is in making integration n streamlined experce & meeting needs. check out my podcast with him here https://t.co/prIWYUJxgx#flipclass#flipclasschat
Where are you from Bob? FYI @DOminiakSCIENCE and I met (definitely NOT for the 1st time; we go way back) again at #FTEC18 and she said she is developing a medical diagnosis course for next year. I live, eat and breath this stuff. Would LOVE to chat and share. #flipclass
No! During a class when I had them watch videos individually (to train them to eventually do it at home), my most disruptive student was overheard saying, “Wow, I’m actually understanding this!” I keep that moment in my heart <3. #flipclasschat#flipclass
A3: i am a big fan of @padlet . But I was focused a lot on S collaboration and now shifting more toward S creation so video tools and other creation tools are of focus. #flipclass#flipclasschat
My biggest lament early in teaching was how I was stuck teaching the whole class together, with little time to provide real help and build real relationships. #flipclass showed me it was possible
I don't think we talked much at all at #FTEC18 about video production (except for 1 unconference session) ... but in his keynote Aaron Sams himself directed us to consider the importance of video lessons as the defining aspect of #flipclass ....
I used my previous lesson plan books, and for every lecture I gave, I made a video. I had 50 lecture periods (43 min) that were moved to video. Typically, when I lectured, it would take the whole class period. #So20thCentury#flipclass
@chriscummingsHH did when she flipped #apchem. She's not on this chat but may be able to help. Using @edpuzzle for formative assessment is one of my goals for this coming year. #flipclass

A2 honestly I find in my area tech is adopted somewhat slowly on the education side...so I’ll be watching to see what YOU all start to use and steal all y’all’s ideas ;) #flipclass#flipclasschat
A3 - I would like to see different types of tech that allows for making Flipped Mastery easier. I have made a google site for my Gen Bio class and am working on putting everything in Schoology for Phys Sci class. Wonder what else is out there #flipclass
A3: This one is tough, as I'm more into function and usefulness - but I will say that the Quests feature in @classcraftgame has great potential for #flipclass#flipclasschat
BTW this video is a MANDATORY #flipclass#flipclasschat watch regardless of your subject area or grade as it provides a great example of a simple but effective way to use the medium #flipclass#flipclasschat
Every night as an alternative or supplement to the reading/note-taking assignment. @edpuzzle will def help me keep track better of who is doing what and for how long. Some kids rather read the book, some the video, some both. I'm flexible. As long as they do something. #flipclass
A3 I’ve used Edpuzzle a bit (not that it needs more attention lol) and will do so more in the future. Google Forms were what I started with (well, after one attempt at something else Crystal Kirch mentioned back then - called Sofia, I think?) #flipclass#flipclasschat
I am in Ohio. Do you post anything online? Currently, my A&P class is very traditional. I do gear it towards Ss interested in health careers. Try to discuss many types of opportunities in health fields. #flipclass
I have to dig up notes but I saw s teacher demonstrate different paths using google forms. Set up like a quiz, but lead to different things based on answers. #flipclass
I think we should have a session on tips and tricks for video making. I know @martharamirezco has a great post about it, and we all have our own thoughts. We should share! #flipclass#flipclasschat
I don't think we talked much at all at #FTEC18 about video production (except for 1 unconference session) ... but in his keynote Aaron Sams himself directed us to consider the importance of video lessons as the defining aspect of #flipclass ....
A3: I absolutely love @screencasto . Either use as a no-frills basic screencasting tool (free), or use the robust (and SUPER INTUITIVE and EASY) editing tools (paid, totally affordable). Hands-down AWESOME. For my chromebook, screencastify (free) works just fine. #flipclass
Were there any particular features of an LMS you were looking for when choosing? I'm wondering if there was anything exclusive to flipped classes that you were looking for, or the LMS was just for organisational purposes.
#flipclass#flipclasschat
I'm not exactly sure, but I get a pretty good idea of my students' opinions/attitudes from the year-end survey which I require everyone to answer in June
https://t.co/U8svLIvpZN
I recommend doing something similar -- improves my teaching practice!
#flipclass#flipclasschat
Like a view of the week or month and where you would like them to be each day. Their pace will fluctuate but it gives them smaller goals. #flipclass#flipclasschat I will post an example
Make any video your lesson...Bring formative assessment right into videos & "force" student interaction..Many of my Ss would get HW done on the bus ride home with @edpuzzle#flipclass
Yoga 370s. Touch screen, flip-back into tablet mode. Sweet, sweet machine. Used to use my personal chromebook because my old school machine was a piece of something. But now 100% school machine. Love it. #flipclass
As you start you are barely ahead of the kids some(many)times. Once you build a library of digital resources (all sorts) give students access to all of them n let them pace rather than a day to day. if they are unprep, give thim headphones and a space #flipclass#flipclasschat
The IT director at my school introduced me to Schoology in 2013, and it met my needs nicely for hosting & neatly listing video assts.
I also really like the direct message feature (only to adults, not Ss) so they can ask me Qs anytime.
#flipclass#flipclasschat
LOVE IT!!! use it. and having talked with the founder I am all in as his heart for students and teachers is clear. They came to Illinois Flipped and Blended 2 wks ago and met with Ts for a total 13 hours get input and train. hear Quim here https://t.co/prIWYUJxgx#flipclass
A good microphone is SO important. Almost the only thing needed for early starters, but I think the very first thing to purchase when you do start to put $ into the flip. #flipclasschat#flipclass

Also, I got pushback on the shorter videos because some Ss said that I went too fast and just gave facts to remember. They tend to prefer ~10 minute videos over the ~6 minute vids.
Surprising feedback!
#flipclass#flipclasschat
as follow up over B...everages aaron explained to @collsphysistry that he doesn't use tons of video with his classes now at the graduate level as other tools can be employed, but when I asked if this applied to HS his take was lack of matur=more vid #flipclass#flipclasschat
Hahaha, my green screen is also feeling lonely! I started that way too, but I think I need a better camera before I get back to using it, the build in camera in my devices just makes it so much easier and, as you say, streamlined. #flipclass#flipclasschat
I mean, it's not as scary as putting 9 former students on-stage in front of about 100 strangers to talk about their experience in your class .... but I just don't have as much steely confidence as @collsphysistry!
#flipclass#flipclasschat
My YouTube analytics tells me a lot of my traffic comes through this platform, but it’s not really heard of in Australia, we have a different set of commonly used platforms #flipclass#flipclasschat
A5: Using ideas like flipped, PBL, and Maker approach to break traditional cycle... Additionally, support risk taking and failure as a true learning path #flipclass
Great thoughts! I think there is room for everything, though. We haven't gotten to a point where we have exhaustively analyzed best practices. #flipclass#flipclasschat
I bought a lapel mic at MicroCenter for about $30 and I still love it so much. The clip fell off but I use a binder clip. Please don't judge ;)

It is a way for students to advance through the learning targets using a mastery approach. You would set up tiles or "grids". The lower grids (activities) are at the bottom of Blooms, and as you master those, the activities start meeting the higher levels of Blooms #flipclass

My Ss totally would have jumped in on lampooning my videos! They make memes of them as it is - which I add to our class @quizizz meme set. Especially the one where I make the "neeerrrooowwwmm" sound of a passing car describing the doppler effect. #flipclass#flipclasschat
I’m a big using of the speed up function in my own podcast listening and video watching, @YouTube s auto captioning is great for my eal students! #flipclass#flipclasschat

Mine is set up to randomly pull 10 questions from a question bank. Students must get a certain score to move to next lesson. Ss have 3 attempts before they are locked out and have to meet with me to see where the weakness is. #flipclass
Every year, each class has at least 1 awkward moment like the discussion in the first 20 mins of ML2S.
I work to improve Ss' skills & bring the "shy Samanthas" up to "director Samanthas" with multiple opportunities, but not a full-scale play production.
#flipclass#flipclasschat
A5: I think asking students for feedback every quarter kept me adapting and growing and changing things. Kids will tell you what they need, we just need to ask. #flipclass#FlipClassChat

I should make a video on how to use the noise cancelling feature of audacity to improve old videos or fix otherwise unsalvagable audio tracks! It’s saved my time many times! #flipclass#flipclasschat

A5 I just keep saying it because it’s true: relationships. Doing #flipclass lets me build better ones with my Ss, and that makes all the difference. (Though sometimes what I learn leads to calls home or to Children’s Aid :(.) #flipclasschat
With all due respect to them, I believe that my 8th grade students are too young & inexperienced to know their best way of taking notes and absorbing information.
My #flipclass is partly about helping them learn how to learn.
Our job is to expose student Les to the best learning possible. Knowing our limits as teachers can only make students stronger when they are exposed to multiple sources. Imagine the power when you say I don’t do it as good as, say, @tyleradewitt or someone else #flipclass

Here is a link to a web course they offer that does a much better job explaining it than my 144 characters https://t.co/cu7Js9Bwp7#flipclass I don’t think it is free though

A5: I didn’t really beat the system. Admin has given my #HHAandP#anatomy#physiology elective pretty much carte blanche as it’s not tested. So tone of the class is markedly relaxed & focused on learning, not testing. This student-made banner hangs at front of the room.#flipclass
I can totally see my students making me look very good at FlipTechColombia! Haha! @collsphysistry 's students were amazing! I'm sure yours, @flipping_A_tchr are too! That should be a thing... flipped students' conference! #flipclass#flipclasschat

I started making videos in March, the school year before I started flipping. By the time school started, I had most of the videos made. It made my life easier when school started. #flipclass
Yes, and I still remember their names years later....
The very best moment last year was when one "impossible" student from 13 years ago came back to school *as a new teaching assistant* in the SpEd program which he used to be a member of!

Just a #flipclass#flipclasschat reminder before anyone bows out tonight from a VERY active and exciting chat the next #flipclass chat is 2 weeks from today same bat-time same bat-channel with Mr. Swan and Mr. Walsh sharing the wheel. (DEAR GOD! is that right?...umm...yes)

I’d totally pay for that. I wonder if we could get some EdTech and #flipclass company’s to sponsor kids to go, like girls state or boys state, then we pay to just observe and interact with the students? #imgladialreadyhostedmyconferenceforthedecade
