In Super Mario Maker, you get to invent your own Mario game!
Q4: What are the most compelling reasons for students to make/create/design with technology?
#122edchat#fearlessedchat
Chats at this time are always hit or miss for me with an infant and toddler at home but I'm glad I was able to swing by tonight. Great crew here! #122edchat#fearlessedchat
A4: When Ss can take ownership of what they're doing, their pride is increased tenfold. That results in more enthusiasm for class in general, which means happier Ss (and Ts!) #122edchat#fearlessedchat
A4 Tech should always be in service of a goal...a higher level goal such as a learning content, aspect of critical literacy, social justice issue, etc. Tech is way to extend learning/demo understanding/represent concept/create &/or manifest an idea…. #122edchat#fearlessedchat
I have the whole range! I have a 1 year old, a 6 year old, and a 13 year old. 3 different bedtimes! It feels sometimes like I am a hamster in a wheel! #122edchat#fearlessedchat
I remember when we first turned to GSuite. Closed gaps, kids kept working collaboratively when they were out sick or when the school was closed for cold/snow. Kids working well into the night. #122edchat#fearlessedchat
Q5: I have used virtual simulations as I introduce topics like the lives in Colonial America (Social Studies) or virtual field trips to look at cultural art (Spanish) all to bring different experiences to the classroom. #122edchat#fearlessedchat
A4 Number one is this is what the world will expect of them. Number two sometimes the only way students will communicate is through technology. #122edchat#fearlessedchat
In Super Mario Maker, you get to invent your own Mario game!
Q4: What are the most compelling reasons for students to make/create/design with technology?
#122edchat#fearlessedchat
A4.1: Producers > consumers. There has been a cultural shift where we depend on others to create for us, but why? Some of the best ideas are trapped in the minds and hearts of the students within our own classrooms and homes. #122edchat#fearlessedchat
A4: WE have to show our students that they can be and ARE creative. So many kids say, “I’m not creative, I cannot draw”. But I want to show them that they so totally are capable and need to be innovative. These skills will help them so much! #122edchat#fearlessedchat
A4: Kids are born into it now, it is inherent into them to use it. Better to learn it and help them use it correctly and collaboratively. #122edchat#fearlessedchat
A4: Students will continue to work with technology in their future, so if we expose them early to designing products, IMAGINE the things that they will be able to create as they grow up! This is our opportunity to really help the creation of a brighter future. #122edchat
That they are MAKING something. They are regurgitating info or filling in blanks or just following the status quo - they are innovating, creating, exploring, and being all the 21st century needs them to be #122edchat#fearlessedchat#slightsoapboxmoment
In Super Mario Maker, you get to invent your own Mario game!
Q4: What are the most compelling reasons for students to make/create/design with technology?
#122edchat#fearlessedchat
A4: Using tech definitely helps Ss stay engaged in the assignment/project. The T encourages, advises, & coaches - this takes away from the traditional teaching style of direct instruction. It totally transforms the learning experience for Ss! #122edchat#fearlessedchat
A4.2: I remember when I was teaching kids how to edit sound in Audacity. I would always tell them that if they did not like what was on the radio they should make their own content. Very easy to do; all it takes is time and patience. #122edchat#fearlessedchat
This creativity seems to fade with age...for many. It is our job to help keep it alive. I took the #andIcreate@Buncee pledge to hold myself accountable. #122edchat#fearlessedchat
A4 #122EdChat#fearlessedchat Reasons for tech...bridge the learning gap between traditional teacher approach & students preferred working styles. Ts get the work turned in while Ss get to create their final works using desirable tech. that gives them ownership in their work.

Q4: What are the most compelling reasons for students to make/create/design with technology?
#122edchat#fearlessedchat
All three of these are skills necessary for innovation. Students need to know they deserve it! Believe in them, help them embrace their passions. #122edchat#fearlessedchat
In Super Mario Maker, you get to invent your own Mario game!
Q4: What are the most compelling reasons for students to make/create/design with technology?
#122edchat#fearlessedchat
A4: I think the students we are working with today are so ready for it. There is so much tech readily available to them. They are ready to create rather than just consume. Challenge them to go to the next level. #122edchat#fearlessedchat
In Super Mario Maker, you get to invent your own Mario game!
Q4: What are the most compelling reasons for students to make/create/design with technology?
#122edchat#fearlessedchat
A4: Technology is going to be a major part of our students' futures. We need to equip them with the skills now to succeed later by allowing them to create and design with technology. #122edchat#fearlessedchat
A4: Students will continue to work with technology in their future, so if we expose them early to designing products, IMAGINE the things that they will be able to create as they grow up! This is our opportunity to really help the creation of a brighter future. #122edchat
So True! If we stop being producers, how will our society look in the future? We need to push kids to step out of their comfort zones, be okay with feeling uncomfortable, and accept that mistakes are a part of the process! #fearlessedchat#122edchat
A5 So many, I will run out of room!
It lets Ss find their voice- so many ways for them to express their ideas & their learning with countless tech tools.
It gives them a taste of what their future will be. So much of their future will be tech focused! #fearlessedchat#122edchat
A4: This generation of students really loves technology. Interest produces results. Integrating tech in the classroom allows Ss to take pride in their work and love what they're doing #122edchat#fearlessedchat
YES! It’s because students get so used to playing the “game of school”. How many jobs are going to require us to sit in isolation and just regurgitate information nonstop?? #122edchat#fearlessedchat
This creativity seems to fade with age...for many. It is our job to help keep it alive. I took the #andIcreate@Buncee pledge to hold myself accountable. #122edchat#fearlessedchat
A4: I completely agree. The world of tech is a moving train. You don't have to know how the engine works, but you have to know how to ride it if your going to survive.
A4 Students become resilient, they learn to work with others, and they become more creative through problem solving. A whole another part of their thinking seems to open up #122edchat#fearlessedchat

And so it has become our job to not give them material to consume, but the tools to create! Such an exciting time to be an educator! #122edchat#fearlessedchat
When @megan_hacholski and I worked with @scratch, we always put the Ss in pairs -- 1 "driver", 1 "navigator". The navigator was the eyes for the team. Had to communicate well with the "driver". #122edchat#fearlessedchat

Q5: How can we use virtual reality within our classroom to allow students to have the same “out of this world” experience?
#122EdChat#fearlessedchat
A3b @rlmiller137 may have joined someone for a YouTube video about student choice of voice. Tech should be one of the choices, not the only option #122edchat#fearlessedchat
A1. Google drawings is under represented. You can use drawings for graphic organizers, interactive posters, goolinks, game boards, and so much more! #122EdChat#fearlessedchat
A5 A student gifted me with a VR set and I think we have a VR cart we can check out...just haven’t used any of this yet. I love idea of virtual field trips especially when considering equity issues/$$$ and limited schedules/time in secondary settings #122edchat#fearlessedchat

Q5: How can we use virtual reality within our classroom to allow students to have the same “out of this world” experience?
#122EdChat#fearlessedchat
A5: We did some stuff a couple years back with @Google Expeditions. I was in meetings yesterday w/@SmartLab_tweets where they were discussing incorporating VR into the Lab. Yes, please! #122edchat#fearlessedchat
A5 This is actually an area of #edtech I have not explored. I admit to feeling intimidated by virtual reality! I don't even know where to start! Any suggestions? #122edchat#fearlessedchat
A5 VR takes Ss to places they may never go. It's espec important when teaching a language to teach the culture too. VR makes that possible #fearlessedchat#122EdChat
A2. Try one thing at a time. Find a tool you want to try, try it, get comfy with it, then try something new. There’s a lot of stuff out there. Just take it one cool tool at a time! #122EdChat#fearlessedchat
OK...A5....very biased on this one but if you aren't using Virtual Reality you are missing out! There is so many places to go and so much to see....and the reaction of kids is priceless! #122edchat#fearlessedchat
Oh my goodness! I’m so passionate about this. So lets say that the students are exploring Biomes. Have them Screencast about the different biomes as if they’re taking their viewers on their very own personal tour! SOOO COOL! Ss love it. #122edchat#fearlessedchat
A5 #122EdChat#FearlessEdChat my best friend & old college roomie & current instructional coach at Round Lake SD @JennyLichter is using #googleexpeditions app and VR goggles to explore amazing places with Ss! Very cool & innovative ways of exploring our world!
Super Mario Galaxy allows players to have a 3D experience.
Q5: How can we use virtual reality within our classroom to allow students to have the same “out of this world” experience?
#122EdChat#fearlessedchat
I am literally doing this right now....we did an intro to Biomes with #googleexpeditions, then they need to look at live in these biomes and using self guided tours to help understand how people live. #122edchat#fearlessedchat
A3. Collaboration course! But bc my lessons call for it. A bad lesson is still a bad lesson even with tech. If a teacher never lets kids work together, tech won’t improve that much. #122EdChat#fearlessedchat
A5: I've never been able to experience virtual reality, so if anyone has one just laying around their class ~let a girl know~ #122edchat#fearlessedchat
Let me know if I can help!! It’s such a great way to get Ss interested in it. Last year, I had them make a GSite for a specific biome and embed posters, screencasts and resources to it! #122edchat#fearlessedchat
We have some amazing people in the house every week...and we are not even running at full strength. Please add us, and give some thought to hopping on board to host...if the kids cooperate. #122edchat#fearlessedchat
LOVE!!! Have them make a G site and tie it to how humans have impacted them. WE then revisited when we talked about Symbiosis! #122edchat#fearlessedchat
Love using @tinkercad. Gives kids so much freedom to bring their best ideas to life. So incredibly easy to use. I wish I had more time to play myself. #122edchat#fearlessedchat
YES, they get to chose their project outcome, newspaper, book, blog, website....and talk about what life is like living in that biome! #122edchat#fearlessedchat
A4. Ss love to use tech to create! Let them! It increases their chances to be creative and when they grow up, their jobs will ask the to create with tech all of the time! #122EdChat#fearlessedchat

Q6: What advice do you have for making student products better?
#fearlessedchat#122EdChat
A6 Give time for peer and teacher feedback on products & projects given a clearly defined set of criteria. Matching task to purpose to audience is key too. Kids must be given time to revise and refine before the “grade” is final. #122edchat#fearlessedchat
A6: Allow for student choice. No templates! Let them create, even if they struggle through that creative process. They will BLOW your minds. #122edchat#fearlessedchat
A6: Celebrate the win. Then break it down and find a way to make it stronger, better, louder, brighter, faster, messier, etc. Reflection is key, if we desire true growth and progress. #122edchat#fearlessedchat

#fearlessedchat#122EdChat
A6: Um....One thing I would say to anyone with feedback, is to give feedback. Most of the tech companies working with EDU listen to all the feedback! Including GSuite #122edchat#fearlessedchat
A6. Give kids voice and choice in their product and give them a clear rubric. Change up their options for creating. Kids often default to slideshows, challenge them to try something new. #122EdChat#fearlessedchat

A6 PEER. REVIEW. Ss care, and listen to feedback infinitely more from peers. Lets be honest, their peers are the audience they want to impress the most #122edchat#fearlessedchat

They CAN do it. It's just easier to run to the store or Amazon to buy it. Breaks my heart that they cannot see what we see in them. Patience. #122edchat#fearlessedchat

A6 #122EdChat#FearlessEdChat My answer stems from servicing students w/ more learning needs so I think providing them examples at the set level of expectation helps them understand what to strive for. I don’t think it stifles the creative process to show them good examples first

A7 Taking away that we need to be more Mario & Luigi in our EDventures. We'll encounter many Koopa Troopas & Goombas along the way but there's always a 1-Up 🍄 nearby. Thanks @Stella_Pollard & crew here for a great #122edchat#fearlessedchat!
Overwhelmed and already blown away by what I'm seeing in #122edchat. I cannot wait to sift through all this amazing content! Thank you to @MillerMathSMS for stepping in to help @_on11 hold down the fort!

Did everyone have fun tonight?!? The party continues next Wednesday night at 7 Central as my good friend, @MrPStrunk takes the wheel for #122edchat! Let's close out 2017 in style...party hats and pie pants, optional. :) #fearlessedchat
When the product is not the end of learning, but a leaping off point, some interesting things start to happen. I am not a fan of the "end of unit project"- it feels too final. When products are part of the learning process, they adapt, flow, improve as Ss create. #fearlessedchat
Thank you so much to our friend @Stella_Pollard for hosting the #122edchat / #fearlessedchat collaboration tonight! We are so grateful for our little family here.
The Wednesday night crews at #122edchat and #fearlessedchat are amazing!!!! Thank you so much all for this PHENOMENAL conversation! @Stella_Pollard rockstar job!
A6: Keep looking at ways to improve, tweak and transform has been created. Don’t focus just on finishing. I love when S’s show me a product and already start telling me how they want to modify it next. See it in @SmartLab_tweets everyday! #122edchat#fearlessedchat

100%. I have a girl who didn't say a word for the first three months of school. Introduced @Flipgrid, she started talking through that tool, and now she actually raises her hand in class. Boom. #fearlessedchat#122edchat
