Run by Iowa educators, #IAedchat is on Twitter the first, second, and third Sundays each month at 8:00pm CST. We have added #IAedchat LIVE to the fourth Sunday of the month at 8:00pm CST. This will take place in Google Hangout on Air. We will share the invitation and link to #IAedchat LIVE each month.
My school is forming a trauma team of which I am a part of. We went to the Keystone AEA trauma conference where Jim Sporleder presented. Also attending the Heather T. Forbes conference in June. #iaedchat
When you’re working with a S who is disregulated, it’s a teachable moment when we stay calm. This helps them see there are options other than being triggered.

Adverse Childhood Experiences
(ACEs) starts with the caregivers. When it’s a toxic environment, it can take 20 years off of life expectancy! @SporLin#IAedChat
#iaedchat One of the biggest misconceptions of a trauma-informed approach is a lack of accountability. False, there is plenty of accountability Its just how and when it is delivered "We held the kids accountable at the end of the conversation, not the beginning." - @SporLin
Mike from Marshalltown. Question: What barriers were present as you were bringing awareness about trauma and ACES to your school? Please share the experiences you had as you were training the staff #iaedchat
#iaedchat-my question and biggest frustration is How can we get staff members on board with this? Why the pushback from the adults in the school? How do we make them see small changes can make such a difference?
Implementation of a trauma-responsive approach starts with discipline. It's not that there isn't discipline, it is how it is delivered and it is through the context of relationship. #iaedchat
Becoming a trauma informed school is very difficult unless 75-80% of staff are on board -Jim Sporleder @TamyraWarnke@RWildcatCheer -Do we have it? #iaedchat
We are partners with kids in their education. With that, we should treat them as professionally as we are expected to treat each other in a positive school culture. With dignity and respect, collaboratively, working with rather than doing to #iaedchat@SporLin@danpbutler
ACES - the Silent Disease. We only know the Ss ACEs score if the S self reveals it. We can’t treat the trauma kids differently. It’s a change in approach with the caring adult relationship that make the difference for ALL students.
@SporLin#IAedChat
"Given that a person may not always be able to communicate/ disclose
their trauma histories; and Given that we do not wish to do further harm; Therefore, we need to presume the clients we serve have a history of
trauma and to exercise “universal precautions.” Hodas #iaedchat
Biggest challenge we have today is that we have disregulated adults working with disregulated kids. (No shame… it’s about the stress that is on Ts)
@SporLin#IAedChat
Once you learn to "put your mirror down", it allows you to do so much more. A regulated adult is well prepared to begin this type of caring relationship with kids. @SporLin#IAedChat
"We have disregulated adults working with disregulated kids." @SporLin Educators are under such stress due to many factors. No judgment. How do we help get back to a regulated place for the good of kids and ourselves? #iaedchat
Vulnerability. It keeps us from taking a step forward. We allow ourselves personal growth that helps transform who we are and makes us a better person.
@SporLin#IAedChat
Can you talk about the importance of educating students about the brain and the process the brain goes through when working through stressful events? Do you have any recommendations for teaching this? #iaedchat
Fear and control - is that your discipline routine?
Don’t skip giving Ss voice and create a relationship in order to change the behavior.
@SporLin#IAedChat
#IaEdChat Fear-based discipline causes stress. Stressed brains don't learn efficiently. For those with histories of toxic stress its even worse as they are often living in a stressed state. If our goal is for kids to learn we need to be all working from a regulated state.
You've shared the importance of speaking through a situation side by side with a student before consequences are applied. Can you discuss on how the staff may proactively work with the students to problem solve before a situation escalates? #iaedchat
"I have found that students will read most pieces if you tell them why you’ve selected the particular piece. If you can stress the importance and purpose of the book, poem, article, or excerpt, most students will read." #StartWithWhy#EdChat#IaEdChathttps://t.co/Jtt7uP5ijz
We asked Jim - What would you change in the landscape of education?
The elephant in the room is high stakes testing. It needs to be addressed. The amount of stress that is placed on Ss is a barrier to change their mindset. Kids are more than a test score.
