Today's #Edchat Topic: What should formative assessment look like and how can it be balanced with summative assessment over the course of a lesson? Let's begin!

Do you think that sometimes Ts fall back on that b/c they "know" this way and are unsure of how to use other activities for formative assessment? #Edchat
#edchat I have lots of ideas in my book Assessment That Matters. Let students create and demonstrate their learning through videos, blogs, podcasts and so much more.
Yes! This is my biggest concern with my son's MS: weekly "checks" in each content class that are part of the grade book. School says it's formative, but it's punitive, too. #Edchat
Language courses should focus less on what students know about the language (grammar rules, conjugation tables, etc.) and more on what students can do with that knowledge, from a functional, communicative perspective. https://t.co/9qt9w3ZrG7#edchat#mfltwitterati#flteach
I really don't understand why every teacher, especially elementary teachers, aren't following @heymissbaker. I mean...she shares insight from 5-7 yr olds! How can you beat that? They are quite funny! #ccsdtn#edchat
#edchat how about taking all the rich information you gather through formative assessment and simply turn that into the student's mark?!? Why give them a paper pencil test when you already know what they know😊
I don't think they are the best assessment of learning, but w/ Ts completely overwhelmed with all of the balls in the air, I can understand the use of them. #Edchat
Any suggestions for language translation apps or resources? I have very limited experience in this area and I have a student from Cambodia who speaks Khmer. Very excited for this opportunity and I want him to feel valued and appreciated! #MtBos#iteachmath#edchat
I can never understand how some educators attack the standardized test culture forced on education, yet they support their own over testing practices. #Edchat
#edchat have students create screencasts explaining a concept, have them create a video tutorial for a classmate, so many creative ways for students to demonstrate their knowledge

32 years I have arguing that you can have those marks in your markbook w/rich evidence to support them when you let students demonstrate their learning in different waysThis is the role that I see edtech havingPodcasts, videos, screencasts, marriage of analog to digital #edchat
Completely agree. We have to use formative assessments to drive our instruction within the lesson. We can’t just be concerned with “getting through the lesson” or “covering” the material. Address student’s needs. #edchat

Don’t underestimate their cognitive abilities! Never teach in the middle, find the gaps, fill them in concept by concept, and always expect them to surpass grade level content. Remember that worksheets and websites don’t teach Ss, you do. #ChatWithTNEdu#edchat
Q4: We all know relationships are so important – and it’s great to hear your tips tonight. But we ALSO know that high-quality instruction must be at the center of what we do each day. How do you balance both? #chatwithtnedu
Being honest: depends on the T. One would hope that the T goes back and re-teaches the content instead of checking it off the list and moving on. #Edchat
The single most important thing I bring to my classroom each year is that I believe in everyone of my students. My goal is that they believe in themselves, no matter what comes their way. #edchat

SBG q- If grades reflect mastery of an ELA standard, but if Ss are already below grade level, how does that keep them motivated? Wouldn't Ss walk in, hear that, and potentially not try because they would feel it would be out of reach to earn a high mark? #sbgchat#elachat#edchat

We must first teach educators how to teach our Ss to test. Then they need to understand data and it’s importance. Until then educators they’ll will continually complain, for they will reject the data that represents their teaching abilities and blame it on the Ss #edchat
