Q1: As a district team, we closed learning gaps for all of our students. At the end of the day - it is always about empowering all Ss to go over that high bar of learning expectations. #OHedchat
A1: I enjoyed celebrating with my teachers when we saw the impact our efforts at differentiating were making for not just gifted kids, but ALL our kids. #ohedchat
A1: The opportunities I have with my students is what I celebrate this year. My classes have afforded me the opportunity and freedom to be able to have awesome conversations with students. #ohedchat
A1: One of the many celebrations Id like to share is how the adults have fostered a system of student servant leaders in/around our community! #ohedchat
Latex Vinyl printer, green screen, broadcasting, coding robots, stop motion legos, graphic design, video editing.... A LOT of student led projects using creativity and letting them follow their passions! #ohedchat
A2: I am always trying to balance all the different aspects of my education life - I always wish that I could spend more time just watching Ss learn across our classrooms. It keeps my work grounded and in perspective. #OHedchat
Tmrw is our last day before Christmas break and I'm going to do a debrief of the year so far. The question I like to ask the most is what their goals are. I never let them get away with saying trivial things. That leads us into talking about how they reach those goals. #ohedchat
A2: Not being in a school environment I have time to attend conferences/workshops/etc. and I would have like to have connected and learned at more of these. #OhEdChat
Oh, this is a tough one! I think it's a real art to finding the right balance of directing/supporting and keeping everyone engaged and feeling ownership. #ohedchat
I hope they actually open up and let me know what I can do to help them be successful. I've been trying to do more of a flipped classroom with my @YouTube channel and I'm curious to see if they think its been helpful. #ohedchat
A2) always wish for more time I can spend in classrooms. As an admin, schedule is not always your own and putting out fires gets in the way of classroom visits. #ohedchat
A3: Building Assessment Literacy skills - in educators, Ss, legislators, the community - is always a challenge. I hope the work @DrBDrost@TebnerEbner & I will be leading in 2019 around Performance Level Descriptors will have a positive impact. #OHedchat
A3: I'm not sure this is a new challenging aspect--just seeing the wide range of strengths and needs and working to best support all with what they need and want. It can be a bit daunting at times! #ohedchat
A3: The kiddos that “fall between the cracks”. Every school has students that are in “programs.” What about the kiddos that don’t qualify or no one signs off to give them services...what does the next 2 wks look like for them? Chaos & Instability. #ohedchat
The growing impact of mental health issues with teenagers. It’s a vicious cycle- mental health impacts academics and attendance. Medications are expensive and therapists are hard to come by. Tough to see a student struggling. #ohedchat
A3: Most challenging thing in 2018? An epidemic of mental health crises for our kids; many of which may be unnoticable. We have to continue to support these needs - it’s far bigger than any curriculum. #ohedchat
A3: The kiddos that “fall between the cracks”. Every school has students that are in “programs.” What about the kiddos that don’t qualify or no one signs off to give them services...what does the next 2 wks look like for them? Chaos & Instability. #ohedchat
A3) balance.
Rigorous but practical and relevant and engaging but content and reading and writing and life skills and character building and service. Include technology and how to write cursive, read charts and solve equations, and be kind and eat well and sleep enough.
#ohedchat
A3 - As a district, our challenge this year has been students with disruptive behaviors and finding ways to support teachers and principals with those challenges #ohedchat
A4: 3 things 1)Hattie -the value of helping others to visualize data -and through that. learning. 2) James Nottingham's work on the Learning Pit to engage Ss in the work of learning 3)Burg -Use the Go-Giver model to add value to the lives of all those you work with. #OHedchat
I try to build relationships with the students. I know their behavior can be a symptom of their circumstances. I want them to know I am here...not going anywhere. #ohedchat
I have a friend who has wisely pointed out (as have several) that this upcoming break may not really be a "holiday" for some kids--it can be the longest, scariest, saddest break for some kids. #ohedchat
A4: I thought I was empathetic, but I am learning everyday as I learn about the challenges our students face...to have #compassion & #empathy. #ohedchat
A4 - I’m working on a very complex skill right now, listening, really listening. As a central office admin I am not in the shoes of the teachers and principals. I am spending more time with them and listening to their issues, ideas, suggestions. #OHedchat
A4: It’s not a new skill, but a new appreciation to sit back and make observations. I’m guilty of trying to roll up my sleeves and do too much too fast. Patience is key! #ohedchat
A4: I think a lot of it involves reflecting on skills that may need strengthened and finding ways to build on those skills. I’ve been more patient and a better listener. #ohedchat
Yes! I tend to want to jump into discussion, and sometimes giving people space to talk, think, and reflect also gives them a moment to breathe and find the strategy or solution they need. #ohedchat
A5: Building a culture that focuses on giving Ss opportunities to learn how to be learners - and develop self-reliance...all while building academic skills, collaborating, and stretching their creativity #ohedchat
A4: I've been learning more about technology and the creation of content. I've been working on modifying projects from previous years and ones that I've recently found to have them better suite my students. #ohedchat
A5: Not a new one: the ongoing challenge of continuing to do what we need to do in supporting kids' learning and growth, along with addressing new initiatives, whether local, state, national. #ohedchat
#ohedchat So sorry I'm missing out on tonight! These are great questions. Had to get some end of semester stuff finalized and some really great exercise equipment put together! Happy Holidays!
A5: Social Emotional Learning and mental health and how we deal with them in the school setting. How do we balance those needs with academic needs. #OhEdChat
A6 - for the first time in a long time I think the @OHEducation and @OHEducationSupt are actually listening to the field. I am hopeful ODE will be able to continue this and help balance against misguided legislative whims. #OHedchat
Last years budget got passed, but than it starts all over again. Its become an annual “thing.” People’s lives are affected, new teachers and programs. #ohedchat
It's especially frustrating when there's a promising program that gets some traction--and it's gone tomorrow. These are the kinds of things that become exhausting after a while. #ohedchat
A6: Innovative and transformative leadership. As I work to transition back to a school environment in leadership I want to make an immediate and lasting impact. #OhEdChat
A6: Feedback. So much of the work I do, and the books I read, focuses on Feedback - how to give it, use it, reflect on it, act on it. Does it help measure progress? Identify next steps? Help me achieve a goal? #Ohedchat
A6: "Joy in the Journey"---the "perfect" educational year doesn't exist--there will always be challenges, frustrations, worries. But there are also successes, epiphanies, and growth. I want to focus on that, and be joyful. #ohedchat
A6 - I want the theme to be “Learning is fun” let’s do more to empower teachers to have the freedom to truly engage students without fear of test scores. #OHedchat
