#musedchat Archive

Each Monday evening at 8PM EST, music teachers get together and share ideas about important topics within music education. It’s a great chance to interact directly with educators from all over the world and to get new tips and tricks to help you succeed in the classroom. The entire #musedchat discussion is organized and moderated by Joe Guarr.

Hi all! MT from MD’s Eastern Shore. #musedchat
  • jguarr - Moderator Mar 26 @ 8:12 PM EDT
Q1 have you experienced burnout in your own career? #musedchat
  • Muzzikkatt Mar 26 @ 8:14 PM EDT
A1: Not me, but my family. Asked many times, are you done yet? #musedchat
  • theatreducate - Moderator Mar 26 @ 8:14 PM EDT
A1: I burned out of performing in my 20s, went into corporate America and then found teaching. I feel like there is where I need to be. #musedchat
  • EmilyChurch86 Mar 26 @ 8:15 PM EDT
A1- I am so thankful for breaks! Any time I am starting to feel burnt out a break is close by. #musedchat
  • SamuelFritz Mar 26 @ 8:15 PM EDT
A1. Teaching band is way more like factory work than I anticipated. Every year many of the same things have to be taught over and over gets a little old after 20 years #MusEdChat
  • MrBMusicTeacher Mar 26 @ 8:15 PM EDT
#musedchat A1 Yes. It's mostly my fault I just can't say no..... Though I think I'm getting better at it. (saying no)
  • edujessication Mar 26 @ 8:16 PM EDT
    A1- I haven’t, but I had no idea I’d be this tired #musedchat #firstyearteacher

#musedchat A1 when my prof at the @UofTMusic told us about burn out I initially thought how hard can this be.....
  • jguarr - Moderator Mar 26 @ 8:20 PM EDT
A1: Thankfully no long-term burnout yet (in year 8 so far), but I do feel it a little bit at the end of each spring. There's just so much going on. #musedchat
  • theatreducate - Moderator Mar 26 @ 8:20 PM EDT
I’m well. Had to take a night off from rehearsal. Tech starts tomorrow. So different being a performer again. #musedchat

A1 This is year 21 for me. I haven't hit any burn-out. Many times I've hit overwhelmed, way exhausted, pushing too hard, why am I doing all these extras, but then things balance out (sort of) every once in a while & I am back to my happy place. :) #musedchat
  • jguarr - Moderator Mar 26 @ 8:21 PM EDT
Q2: What are the causes and symptoms of burnout that you've noticed either in yourself or your colleagues? #musedchat
  • Muzzikkatt Mar 26 @ 8:22 PM EDT
#musedchat However there are many different melodies to use instead of Hot Cross Buns
    In reply to @SamuelFritz
  • MrTeechr Mar 26 @ 8:23 PM EDT
Hello #MusEdChat! A1: I went through burnout following a ton of job-related, yet not music-related, stress. Mostly over it now.
  • Frenchie414 Mar 26 @ 8:24 PM EDT
A1: Year 10 for me and no burnout yet. However I’ve had a few job switches in my career. Elem music > MS/HS Choir > elem music again! #musedchat
  • Muzzikkatt Mar 26 @ 8:24 PM EDT
#musedchat Totally agree!! It’s why I’m still enjoying teaching after 20+ yrs
    In reply to @smanhart4
  • MrNathanRB Mar 26 @ 8:24 PM EDT
A2: The times I have noticed burn-out in teachers has been when they stop learning and become fixed in their traditions or prior knowledge. #musedchat
  • beckgillette Mar 26 @ 8:25 PM EDT
#musedchat Q2 Too many irons on the fire, not enough time, always being behind.
  • theatreducate - Moderator Mar 26 @ 8:25 PM EDT
A2: My expectations didn’t match the reality. I wasn’t mentally prepared for music to take over my life. I stopped being able to listen to music without being analytical. #musedchat
  • jguarr - Moderator Mar 26 @ 8:26 PM EDT
That's a good point, sometimes we stick ourselves in a rut and don't know how to escape #musedchat
    In reply to @MrNathanRB
  • beckgillette Mar 26 @ 8:26 PM EDT
#musedchat A2 Sorry! I'm new to this chatting thing! Symptoms: lack of clarity in thinking, reactive, anxious.
  • Muzzikkatt Mar 26 @ 8:26 PM EDT
Q2: True, spread too thin. Be selective #musedchat

#musedchat SaraBeth k-5 music in TX
  • EmilyAnn0113 Mar 26 @ 8:27 PM EDT
A1 nothing long term yet but literally every single May. first year in a new job at a new district interested to see if it happens this year. #musedchat
  • Frenchie414 Mar 26 @ 8:27 PM EDT
A2: I think musicians tend to “do it all.” When we’re spread too thin and we don’t take enough time for ourselves and our families, it can definitely lead to feelings of being overwhelmed. #musedchat
  • jguarr - Moderator Mar 26 @ 8:27 PM EDT
RE: irons in the fire Music teachers can be really bad at saying 'no' to things. #musedchat
    In reply to @beckgillette
  • EmilyChurch86 Mar 26 @ 8:27 PM EDT
A2- I think it’s rarely the kids that contribute to burnout but rather all the outside influences- rough schedule, high-stress performances, etc. I always know I need a break when I am less motivated to plan and just feel super exhausted at the end of the day. #musedchat
  • MrTeechr Mar 26 @ 8:28 PM EDT
The cause of my burnout was a piling on of expectations by admin along w/ the firing of a colleague. General toxic environment. Symptoms: depression & withdrawal. #MusEdChat
  • MrBMusicTeacher Mar 26 @ 8:28 PM EDT
#musedchat A2 the inability to say no. Symptoms include the feel that I was drowning in anxiety, short temper especially with my family. The guilt afterwards is pain that I wouldn't wish on anyone....
  • Tuffnellmusic Mar 26 @ 8:28 PM EDT
A1 - year 20 for me and I felt it about 10 years ago. Teaching MS band w young 2 kids just exhausted me #musedchat
  • jguarr - Moderator Mar 26 @ 8:28 PM EDT
Agree 100%. The kids are almost never the problem. The days when we can just teach are the best days. #musedchat
    In reply to @EmilyChurch86
  • EmilyAnn0113 Mar 26 @ 8:28 PM EDT
Without a doubt being spread too thin. Last job all of the music teachers were doing the job of at least 1.5 some doing the work of 2 people. New job I am the only music teacher pre-K-8th grade so again spread thin. #musedchat
  • Martino_s_music Mar 26 @ 8:29 PM EDT
Hi from CT! A1: I've never had a full-blown burnout in my 33 years of public school teaching, but I've had a slump or 2. #musedchat
  • jguarr - Moderator Mar 26 @ 8:29 PM EDT
I think you nailed the symptoms. When I feel fried, I essentially just go home and sit on the couch. #musedchat
    In reply to @MrTeechr
  • EmilyAnn0113 Mar 26 @ 8:30 PM EDT
A2: without a doubt it’s caused by being spread too thin. I haven’t had a job yet where I haven’t had to do the job of two people. even as I type this I am finally walking up my stairs and into my house at 8:30pm #musedchat
  • jguarr - Moderator Mar 26 @ 8:30 PM EDT
Q3: What supports from admins/colleagues would better help teachers handle burnout? #musedchat
  • Tuffnellmusic Mar 26 @ 8:32 PM EDT
A2 - causes were lack of sleep, constant criticism from co directors, trying to do everything at 100% #musedchat
  • beckgillette Mar 26 @ 8:33 PM EDT
#musedchat A3 My principal supports us when we have a family need or are not feeling well. She's understanding and supportive!
  • MrTeechr Mar 26 @ 8:33 PM EDT
A3 I don't think most admin fully understand the scope of the music director's job. Perhaps if they did, they would create ways to be helpful. I'm still waiting for funding on the assistant. #nevergonnahappen #MusEdChat
  • Frenchie414 Mar 26 @ 8:33 PM EDT
A3 cont.: Also a little appreciation goes a LONG way. “Hey, the kids did great at the concert!” or “Thanks for all you do!” from a colleague or admin... 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻#musedchat
  • smanhart4 Mar 26 @ 8:33 PM EDT
A2. External forces sometimes: pressure from admin/district/parents; not teaching appropriate grade-level? I think back to my 1st year as an elem.music specialist. I taught @ 9 elem schools. It was not where my heart was. If I was still on that track,I'd be burn-out. #musedchat
  • beckgillette Mar 26 @ 8:34 PM EDT
#musedchat A3 Our staff has regular "Friday Coffee" which helps us connect and support each other.
  • beckgillette Mar 26 @ 8:35 PM EDT
I agree with the appreciation piece! #musedchat
    In reply to @Frenchie414
  • adamskab1 Mar 26 @ 8:35 PM EDT
Kari from TX, running late tonight but going to try to jump in and catch up! #musedchat A1: I had complete burnout at the end of year one. I left the profession and never expected to return. I'm on year 7 now and pursuing a PhD so I can help young teachers to find joy!
  • MrBMusicTeacher Mar 26 @ 8:36 PM EDT
#musedchat A3 my admin actually has helped me out by not approving certain festivals, trips bc they know I do a ton. You guys rock @Mr_Zaroski @MrPParente Mrs. Angela Capozzolo
  • edujessication Mar 26 @ 8:36 PM EDT
A3- I personally wish a bigger network of music teacher friends to swap stories and ideas with #musedchat
  • Martino_s_music Mar 26 @ 8:36 PM EDT
A2: Prolonged: lack of admin support, too many demands being placed, dealing with the poor behaviors from students who need so much more emotional and behavioral support than can be offered in public school. #musedchat
  • jguarr - Moderator Mar 26 @ 8:36 PM EDT
    That's pretty awesome. #musedchat
    In reply to @MrBMusicTeacher, @Mr_Zaroski, @MrPParente
  • EmilyChurch86 Mar 26 @ 8:36 PM EDT
A3- attending concerts, visiting classes, and a “nice job” goes a long way. Luckily, I have a really supportive team and admin. #musedchat
  • jguarr - Moderator Mar 26 @ 8:37 PM EDT
Yes! An assistant or a TA would be a huge benefit for many of us, not just music folks. The teachers in my bldg who team teach seem much happier and energetic. #musedchat
    In reply to @MrTeechr
  • adamskab1 Mar 26 @ 8:37 PM EDT
A2: Major causes for me were lack of admin support and toxic school culture. I thought I was the problem and gave up. I'm thankful I discovered later how much of a difference school culture can make. Finding the right fit was one thing that helped save my career. #musedchat
  • Tuffnellmusic Mar 26 @ 8:38 PM EDT
A3 - big thing from admin & colleagues is the encouragement to take day off to rest and stop looking at the next item on calendar #musedchat
  • MrTeechr Mar 26 @ 8:38 PM EDT
Yes, I agree. My school is not large enough to support two music teachers. But I can dream. #MusEdChat
    In reply to @jguarr
  • adamskab1 Mar 26 @ 8:39 PM EDT
A3: So important to provide mentorship for new teachers. Not just an occasional check-in, but a comprehensive mentoring program from other music teachers. Pairing new music teachers with a good teacher in the building is nice, but not enough. #musedchat
  • beckgillette Mar 26 @ 8:40 PM EDT
    YES! #musedchat
    In reply to @adamskab1
  • jguarr - Moderator Mar 26 @ 8:41 PM EDT
Love this idea! A good mentor can help guide new teachers through those rough first few years (50% of new teachers leave the profession within 5 yrs) #musedchat

Q4: What do YOU do to combat burnout and its symptoms? #musedchat
  • Muzzikkatt Mar 26 @ 8:45 PM EDT
#musedchat Weekday salad lunch - each brings something
    In reply to @beckgillette
  • adamskab1 Mar 26 @ 8:46 PM EDT
A4: I believe the greatest way to combat burnout is to focus on your WHY. Why did you become a teacher? Why do you love your students? Why do you love music? On the most difficult days, re-center on that why. #musedchat
  • MrTeechr Mar 26 @ 8:46 PM EDT
A4: I keep my focus on the students. I make lists & try to keep ahead of paperwork, planning, etc. I try to keep my room/office organized so I feel less stress. #MusEdChat
  • beckgillette Mar 26 @ 8:46 PM EDT
#musedchat A 4: I recognize when I'm overwhelmed and take a day off. OR - stay late and get a lot done so I feel a lifting of the burden.
  • edujessication Mar 26 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A4- I very purposefully do not bring work home with me. I also play in a community band made up of local music teachers. While teaching elem music is so much fun, singing Sol-Mi all day isn’t as musically fulfilling as struggling through West Side Story #musedchat
  • Martino_s_music Mar 26 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A3: Admins need to see educators as people first. Colleagues need to reach beyond the 4 walls of their classrooms & take an interest in what's happening in their school. I'm blessed to work in an amazing school that has these! #musedchat #momauguinproud
  • EmilyChurch86 Mar 26 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A4- self care. I am actually pretty introverted so time to read by myself can do wonders. I read a lot of YA recommendations from students. Easy to read and “escape” with. #musedchat
  • jguarr - Moderator Mar 26 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A4: Important to have a hobby to come home to so I'm not taking work home. I was really bad at work/life balance my first couple years. #musedchat
  • EmilyAnn0113 Mar 26 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A4 allow myself to not feel guilty if I do get home early and fall asleep on the couch by 8pm #musedchat
  • Frenchie414 Mar 26 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A4: I focus on the parts of my job that I love the most; the kids. But also my select ensembles where the kids are there because they want to be. And I try to surround myself with positive, caring colleagues! #musedchat
  • Muzzikkatt Mar 26 @ 8:48 PM EDT

  • jguarr - Moderator Mar 26 @ 8:50 PM EDT

Yes. Being able to just stop. Because I'm never done. I will never be done if I spend every hour on school stuff. I need to allow myself time to live. #MusEdChat

#musedchat A4 it may seem insignificant but eating lunch with other departments help out. Also I have a philosophy I follow if my body is tired work out thr mind but if my mind is tired, ie burnout, work out the body.
  • smanhart4 Mar 26 @ 8:50 PM EDT
A4 Leaving stuff at school. I used to bring tons of stuff home to do. I reduced that immensely-I owe myself family time with my 4 girls & husband. I used to stay late/go crazy early regularly--there is always stuff to do. It can wait now. It all gets done. #musedchat

  • Tuffnellmusic Mar 26 @ 8:52 PM EDT
A4- the better organized I am, easier life is. I also like to read and binge on Grey's Anatomy. Working on constant sleep #musedchat
