-
Hi Glenn! So glad you are back for more convo tonight! :-)
-
-
Alisha...does twitter count? :)
-
-
Started dabbling in Pokemon Go this past week. Trying to figure out how to bring into my classes.
-
-
It is def a game you have to learn to play to use effectively :)
-
have Pokemon represent a content item.
-
It's like a puzzle that you have to solve matching same color dots
-
honestly I have never played angry birds
-
One of my former students found out I am playing and pointed out I used to take his phone for playing pokemon.
-
Like the old Tetris a little bit? Dating myself....
-
I actually played that once!!!!
-
I like real slingshots too much to want to play that one
-
-
A1: Intro a task or quest that is easy to do like create an eBook on but complex and open ended like 'ing
-
A1. Level the tasks. Maybe incorporate higher grade-level standards? Like 6th for 5th.
-
A1. Not sure about this. As music tchr, might choose a well-known song they must master on their instrument.
-
A1 That's a tough one: teaching PE, I have a lot of control over physical content, so I can add more physical barriers and challenges
-
-
A1 easy to learn, difficult to master is usually how I approach my subject in general.
-
-
A1. Or in addition to leveling the tasks, require Ss to teach it to another to show mastery.
-
A1: wasn't sure how I wanted to answer, but loving the ideas being given.
-
A1: I know! Create something simple on GarageBand, use it th/out the course to create more complicated musical selections.
-
A1 basics are easy to grasp, memorize, but applying them is more rigorous.
-
A1: I have Ss play trashketball inorder to get a clue for a scavenger hunt
-
A1. DOK! Higher DOK = more points?
-
for example I want to teach adding fractions. Each Pokemon represents a fraction add together to see highest
-
A1) Put 5 or 6 unrelated items in an envelope and tell students to create something they can use with it in 10 min.
-
I was thinking that as well. Kagan silly sports and games may work too.
-
A1 part 2 I've actually used water balloon sling shots to knock down blocks onto pigs before. actual Angry Bird gamification!
-
Exactly what I was going to say! https://t.co/VLQZ9Gx2Ft
-
-
A1. Or in addition to leveling the tasks, require Ss to teach it to another to show mastery.
-
We are off to a great start! Q2 coming at ya in 2!
-
-
Nice! What a great way to collaborate and create.
-
My kids did that, loved every minute of it in afterschool program
-
for science have them represent elements to make equations
-
This is awesome! https://t.co/9zJNMJASwF
-
-
A1 part 2 I've actually used water balloon sling shots to knock down blocks onto pigs before. actual Angry Bird gamification!
-
That looks like flow...just my speed. And catching little pocket monsters...
-
A1 task is easy to practice in groups, then mastery must be shown without a safety net of the group
-
-
-
Is it true that we have 3 music teachers here tonight?! Do you all know each other?
-
-
-
A1. Music - Rhythms. Can define the rhythms as the slingshot - making more complex rhythms the higher level.
-
A1: anytime we hit the MR on the SAMR model.
-
Sidenote: has a similar game where Ss answer Math ?'s to get the piece to slingshot...more game-base instead of
-
A1 for my version of Pokemon go, it will be easy to find characters, harder to complete tasks to capture
-
-
A2: A michelin star awarded for each side quest completed. Earning 3 in a unit would unlock special advantage in game.
-
A2: badges for each skill earned, more badges = more challenging levels or greater rewards
-
A1 you need you game to be realistic. Need to know how items work
-
A2: Badges/stars/?? rewarded for levels achieved or quests reached?
-
-
A2: Giving out XP or Badges for completion of work or moving to a next stage of work in progress
-
another game I didn't get into
-
A2. Music/band. The greater the proficiency demonstrated in a musical performance the more stars earned.
-
I have Ss make avatars @
start of year, using their Avatars-Use these th/out year on https://t.co/b4g8ZdOA7N & communications-DigiCit
-
A2: Maybe a better way to do rubrics, 1, 2 or 3 stars. Much more kid friendly.
-
A2) Want Ss to read variety of genres; award Genre stickers/badges for each genre requirement completed
-
A2 I would use XP points for each task (built into Classcraft for example), or maybe even award badges worth XP at the end of class.
-
-
A2 I have created levels based on capture point totals. It's still at the handwriting stage. https://t.co/tCpFR2X4jy
-
A2. If Ss doing research/writing: more sources = more points (or also, higher text complexity = more points
-
A2 Music/orchestra, different stars or levels for 1/2/3 octave scales
-
A2: I'm struggling with this right now... finding quality "rewards" that HS kids will buy into, for consistent effort and initiative.
-
A2: The more difficult the challenge they choose the more points? Ex. Recipe with multiple steps = more points.
-
Octaves/range. Excellent idea.
-
Loving all the ideas! Q3 coming in 2 minutes!
-
A2;For each quest the Ss completes, get XP, leaderbadge, gold & level up in skill that they could use to forge together 2 get new item
-
It's a challenge for elem/middle too--saw a school district that has Ss shadow community members at their jobs as a reward!
-
Easier on string instruments than band instruments, though!
-
A2: Might work it into exemptions for quizzes and playing tests - "Complete X no. of musical challenges, exempt from Friday's quiz"
-
That is very cool! Community buy-in as well as engaging for Ss
-
-
-
that was a thought I had too. Also thought about surprise bonuses/prizes for closing out 1 or 2 of the genres.
-
My kids will do anything for a "free practice video pass" (if you track any kind of practicing)
-
A3: Team members could work together to collect badges that unlock special privilege and help in class challenge.
-
That's a good plan. Classcraft is to be my go-to this year! Do you use the free version? https://t.co/GmEybQBAS3
-
-
A2 I would use XP points for each task (built into Classcraft for example), or maybe even award badges worth XP at the end of class.
-
A3. Clash of Clans - everyone grouped together and killed me. :-)
-
for Business Ltrs - each represents part of a Ltr - all 9 must be caught to count as a Bus.Ltr. Am I on right track?
-
same could be done for simple/complex sentences at younger grades for writing.
-
You will be surprise with what they value:) Try asking them as well
-
A3: Team quests and challenges - also is awesome for this!
-
-
I was trying to figure this out for leveling Ss needs so they could earn xp at their comfort level. Thanks
-
A3: Group quests, sometimes group made by me, some by Ss.competition between groups for XP, groups unlock secrets with collab. skills
-
A3. Trumpets vs Trombones vs Percussion - if I can figure out a way for them to "battle".
-
-
A3. Have Ss. build fortresses/staging areas on Minecraft? Complete tasks and get points for training? Collect badges?
-
A3 Quizzes/summative assessments = boss battles, can be cooperative (teams). formative assessments = minion battles
-
Is this incorporated for entire year or a set amount of time? Just curious.
-
A3 I am learning about breakout education at an edcamp next week. Exciting to learn the logistics
-
A3. Also: could incorporate our study of American Rev. -- battles
-
A3: Hoping to create "Instrument Guilds" that challenge each other to attend Sectionals, earn points at Coffee Houses, etc.
-
A2. Thinking of completed mech=part of a level badge earned-Ex:Must have 3 Mechs earned to get "Intern" badge.
-
You will love it! Both the physical and digital versions!
-
I'm thinking about have 8-week challenges. Or maybe 3-month?
-
It's great way to collab/competition and assess Ss learning
-
-
A3: Maker challenge in groups for special badges or ??
-
I would change the theme every 2 or 3 months.
-
How will students be placed in guilds? I've thought about this but struggled with the logistics.
-
-
-
A3) Perhaps can create a with quests and successful completion unlocks new quests thru revealing password to next level
-
By instrument type. Trumpets, trombones, etc.
-
I am here!!! I am here!!!
-
hoping to learn enough to get ideas of how to adapt for foreign language
-
A3:One of my goals this year is 4 each guild to build their own house, by winning boss battles, achieving quests, winning mini games
-
Q4 coming up in 2 minutes! Loving all the fabulous ideas!
-
I like the idea of having Ss take Bartle test and variety of game types in guilds
-
-
Do you have balanced(ish) sections? That's always my problem!
-
Instrument guilds encourages Ss in sections to help each other with fingerings, rhythms, etc.
-
Keep in touch if you want ideas. My most successful ones have been the ones I've written myself.
-
-
-
you might find some already written for that. The library of games is growing exponentially!
-
A3: Where to even begin!!! So many possibilities!!!
-
A3: Could be individual or team
-
Thanks. I love how these questions challenge me to think differently.
-
A4: certain aspects of game unlimited time, but side quests could be "blue light special" for limited time
-
A4 I do a lot of station/center work in PE, so I use an interval exercise timer app to control how long each task is, then Ss rotate
-
A3: Each person or team could have a special skill or purchase their skill. Different skills have different earning powers and powers
-
Give Ss a certain amount of time to complete a side quest for XP. When time runs out...SQ is closed.
-
A4. Time based levels a mechanic in many online games. It seems like a logistical nightmare to me in class with 50-60 Ss.
-
A3: Players could sell items
-
Yay!!! One of the guru's is here tonight
-
Time could be 1 class period or full week?
-
A4: Could have a challenge with a timer - maker challenge - or time sensitive info that comes out over the life of the game
-
A4 certain things must be completed in time. I am having certain characters available only on certain times and places
-
Thank you for the time idea.
-
A1: A big part of those games is finding ways to do the same task in faster & more efficient ways. They limit players' resources/time
-
I feel like I was on right track when I read responses.....that's good!
-
A4. For team-based tasks: complete in a pre-determined amount of time. Or, 1st, 2nd, 3rd.
-
A4 Post side quests on Google Classroom...link is only up for ___ hours/days
-
A4) Small group work where they must solve several puzzles w/in a time period, w/the earliest finishers getting prize eggs
-
Levels could also give players or teams abilities / powers that other levels don't have https://t.co/ebnFqZ57B8
-
-
A4. Time based levels a mechanic in many online games. It seems like a logistical nightmare to me in class with 50-60 Ss.
-
Side quests: differentiation!
-
Love this idea ... side-tracked now with tons of ideas for my classes!
-
A3: Could even do it in Minecraft!!!
-
Hoping to do similar activities in my Music classes too!
-
On campus scavenger hunts & pics sent. Points for quickest times.
-
A4:I do an amazing race which is strictly time challenge & some of my random trivia questions have 2 be answered before a certain day
-
A3: Can you imaging students building their cities on the walls of your room or even with legos...they could earn pieces!!
-
The moment when you like your own tweet because you're so into the chat.
-
Would love for them to have the power to play in tune. :-)
-
-
Hey, a good idea is a good idea, even if it is your own! :)
-
Keep up the awesome....Q5 coming in 2 minutes!
-
A4: My Ss had a Maker Challenge in groups and had 20 min. to build tallest building-highest wins https://t.co/RsYCVsRM2X
-
A4: Farmville....I imagine that is like Hayday!? Im not allowed to play that anymore. Sucked most of June away from me last summer ;)
-
I use guilds so that its more like 15 groups to keep track of
-
A4: Could use a lot of the same mechanics we shared about Clash of Clans
-
Yea, I played ZOO several years ago...had to stop saving the animals...
-
Did the same w/ Girl Scouts! But they only had newspaper.
-
A2: Puzzle games loudly celebrate when you make progress. There's a sound effect, music plays, or confetti flies. Find time to cheer!
-
for sure! You'd have to not make it time based.
-
-
-
A5. Music class - find the unison. Who is doubling the part you're playing???
-
A5) Use QR codes hidden; for example in books, etc., where Ss reveal a special character in classroom game or quest
-
A5 this one I have no idea for... hope to get some ideas.
-
A5: More AR apps, like and layar to embed content
-
Welcome to chat...YEAH!!!!! https://t.co/nYKAxIdCa0
-
-
Love this idea ... side-tracked now with tons of ideas for my classes!
-
A5 Definitely giving students gold to use in Classcraft to buy outfits/accessories and train new cool pets with...kinda similar?
-
A5: I've wanted to use Aurasma for years - now I think kids will finally get it. Bringing life to old paintings seems awesome.
-
A5:I love how PokemonGo mechanics appeal to many diff gamer styles. Socializers, griefers, explorers, achievers.
-
A5: Use Google Expeditions or Earth to take videos or pics of physical quests or scavenger hunts?
-
A5: is a super fun scavenger hunt w/similar features (not AR but other parts) that I have used w/my Ss could be a quest
-
A5: Hidden clues setup around school, certain problems are worth more than others.
-
class craft has all that? I need to check that out.
-
Do you teach MS? I am a MS Literacy teacher, very intrigued by your ideas....
-
-
A5: Use QR codes hidden around the school to open new info in a quest.
-
A5. This isn't really answering the question. But it guides Ss to bring Minecraft creations to life https://t.co/1bCl8TfoP2
-
Have you ever played a game called Masterpiece? Board game from 70s. I plan to use elements of it in class like that!
-
A5: My 9yr old daughter and I were just talking about this tonight!!!
-
A3 Have opportunities to customize their experience in ways that say something about them. Let them play out attractive identities
-
A5 I am hiding clues around school, maybe even some places like ball games or the mall.
-
A5. QR codes around campus w/ tasks
-
A5: Hidden pokemon, students have to earn points to buy clues. Clues lead to pieces
-
Realized how easy it is to throw all goals out the window for a game! :)
-
Times flying! Q6 in just a minute!
-
This is Luke, checking in. Completely lost track of time today!
-
Love it! You could give clues and students could have to scan things to find them! https://t.co/eftk2gREN9
-
-
A5: More AR apps, like and layar to embed content
-
A5: PokemonGo has shown me that you can rope people in even when they have no idea what they are doing! Surprises around every corner
-
I teach 6th grade! :) I'm in a 5/6 building though, but obviously, working with similar ages to you!
-
A6. Hide clues in the practice room - they never go in there.
-
That's what I've been thinking about doing next year. A ticking clock adds challenge & excitement.
-
Join TONIGHT at 8CST w/ host steering the ship of pirate scientists! All subjects welcome.
-
A5: I've known teachers to hold scavenger hunts at the school, where other teachers give out clues.
-
Could totally incorporate that into my PBL on GeoCities. Thanks!
-
Excellent! Perhaps we can DM sometime? I have so many questions!
-
-
A5: I have a local music store that might love to be part of a physical quest for Music kids!
-
-
A6: Adding in physical parts to challenges. I like using math and phys ed together!
-
Love this idea! Stickers to Ss that reach Level-Up - wear all day long (for more XP?-show me prior to going home).
-
A6: I have challenge where Ss are racing to see which team can whip cream the fastest. Requires technique, collaboration, and speed.
-
-
And young and old! Parents are playing w/kids Would be great to do something where Ss go home & engage w/parents like that
-
-
-
A6: I'd argue Fruit Ninja is more about recovering from constant fail-states!
-
A6 students have to answer quickly. Bonuses for speed as in
-
A6: Could pose a challenge for the team to work out....first team to come up with correct answer wins XP https://t.co/jb3GPKbPSi
-
A5: Make a great vocab, speech/lang activitiy, ELL. Clues relate to an item and students have to use their knowledge to find them
-
A6 Who can play a passage the fastest without compromising accuracy? Slur the most notes w/1 bow (or fit the most notes in 1 breath)
-
A6: Sight-reading challenges, maybe ones that get progressively harder! Challenge other kids to do more/faster.
-
Anytime! I'm new to all the gaming elements but doing Mission Impossible w/Amazing Race style elements this yr
-
A4 You could create a legendary "unbeatable" challenge w/ a time limit that's open-ended and let students try to beat it all year
-
A6. Math comes to mind! Also, engineering challenges. And social studies (Revolution battles, dates, leaders)
-
A5: Screams mini game to me, Hidden point totals behind folders up on the board. If you get the ? right you get the point total.
-
Just read a great article about , love the idea of getting children socializing around game, both IRL and in game.
-
A6. Also, something w/ Periodic table. Hmmm.
-
-
A6: We have a review game I like to call trashketball where Ss who answer questions throw a ball into a bin for 1, 2, or 3 pts
-
-
A6 Can do speed quizzes! Also, for PE, I'll be doing timed physical tasks for speed vs accuracy challenges.
-
Would love to learn with/from you.
-
-
No it can't be...last question of night coming up in just a minute!
-
the problem is people are sitting around together, but just staring at screens, not really interacting
-
A6. Playing technical exercises with no mistakes at increasing metronome markings.
-
haha I played this too! Hated getting the sunflower!
-
-
-
-
As a former speech therapist......love it!
-
-
Thanks for the awesome ideas and discussion tonight! Brain is on fire! Ducking out early - thanks !
-
WHAT????? This is becoming a favorite chat!
-
A7: SimCIty type games, where I need to continue to build and create
-
I love those! To add to challenge, sometimes I split the material up and spread it around the room. Ss rotate to each
-
-
I ask my Ss THIS all the time, trying to understand.....
-
A7: Rt now it's PokemonGo Anticipation is huge..where will they be? What will I learn about this game next? What are those pink things?
-
Q7. I think the novelty of PokemonGo keeps me going. I drove to Long Beach the other day and found a completely new set of Pokemons.
-
A7. In Bloon City - capturing more territory and upgrading my weapons/tools so I can defeat stronger challenges.
-
-
I have MS 6th-8th graders.
-
-
A5 Encourage teams of your students to find examples of your content outside of the school building.
-
A7 No favorite app, but genre = turn-based strategy! Love empire building with combat.
-
-
Yes, I do similar as timed stations. :)
-
Q7 Not an app, but Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. Time, challenge always changes, collaboration, locked levels until you advance.
-
A7 I like civilization type games because I enjoy building and expanding. If it can have different outcomes, I will replay.
-
Q7 I want to see what is waiting in those locked levels!
-
A7: I currently suck at hitting Pokemons with the Pokeball. Need to improve!! Other games - improve speed and levels.
-
Super fun! Forces collaboration & communication. Would be great team-building fun in class.
-
A6-must complete side-quests or "complete a Business Deal" w/in a time limit-quickest gets 10 pts, next 8, 5, 2. Out of Time=0 pts.
-
A7 my husband plays the same games and enjoys the battles, weapons and strategy
-
I found that the type of gamer I am depends on the game I play: Dots (Achiever), WordsW/Friends(Social), Pokemon(explorer) Just me?
-
A7: I like that not all the mechanics of the game are given. You have to learn to play. No punishment ever, but rewarded for learning
-
Twitter Chatter (investigator).
-
-
A7: Mobile Strike, use recommended quests to procure items for their house, but will mix in choice and voice for other quests
-
I think the concept is amazing, getting small groups together, walking and talking. That is an amazing
-
A7) Time elements or sense of urgency that attention is needed "NOW". Prizes bigger earlier or clues disappear the longer you take
-
I love thinking like this. So rewarding for Ss and me!
-
Divergent! I like that! :) https://t.co/K9dUOyxfYe
-
-
Interesting! You're divergent! ;-) My daughter and I joke about this...because we are the same.
-
I love this community! Thank you for all the sharing, follows and learning! It is fantastic! (Answering my questions!)
