A1: this is my biggest challenge!!! What storyline do I go with to capture the SS???
-
A1: Any stories in my life that relate, esp. stories about my kids and my dog!
-
This isn't part of a game, I act out The Teacher from the Black Lagoon o the 1st day so they know I have a sense of humor :-)
-
A1: Ss love to hear about my family...though I have to be careful now that both my kids are at the HS with me! yikes!
-
A1: I also share things that were challenging for me when I was a S and now as an adult. It's good for them to know we struggle!
-
A1. I love 2 share stories, it's all about connecting - to my family, travels, jobs, exp, s's love my retail shoplifter stories lol
-
A1: any stories where Ss can relate what they are gong thru w/you. Tell lots of things my own kids do who are same age as class
-
I usually do that too. My daughter is in 5th this year, so I'll try not to embarrass her too much
-
A1 I share stories from my life, esp when I was a student. I also try to include some history of science stories, people/places etc
-
Off to a great start! Q2 coming in 2 minutes!
-
Personal stories that place the learning process in a completely different context - preferably one with a strong visual.
-
My son will be in K at my school this yr so I might have to start being careful too!
-
A1: I share a lot about my dad, my hero. He was a lifelong learner, always reading, writing, and thinking. My inspiration! :-)
-
A1. 2/2 the best stories are about my kids who came to be in my class as 5th graders - now s's can see how hard work = success
-
That's very cool. Sure Ss appreciate it
-
-
-
A1: not game related... I share enough of my life to get them hooked... But leave enough unknown so they want to know more!
-
A1: Started last year with a picture slide show of my life to connect with Ss asap They loved it
Doing it again this year
-
-
A1 Ss reflect on fam food traditions & share w/ class and I do as well. Food is powerful & imp aspect of tradition and culture.
-
Own kids @ my school, embarassed them, but they also ❤️that I was there. Son n my class 1 yr
-
A2: Confidence in themselves as a person and a learner, exploring their interests and passions, ....
-
A2: I allow students to talk...a lot, and I really listen to them. Because I share a lot, they are open to sharing their stories
-
A2: Ask your Ss how they want to be remembered from this year. Encourage them to share their own legacies. https://t.co/pp1Gw5B9tg
-
A2. I've been in same school/grade for 18 yrs now & have posters of my "captains" and leaders from years past - it's like LionKing
-
A2: I encourage them to figure out what makes them tick... Why should they care?? Then build on that... There is often sarcasm used
-
A2: Also helping them to know that one bad day is not their legacy, they can start fresh the next day...
-
A1: jumping in....I share my struggles as a student- testing difficulties I've had and failures- basically show Ss I'm human
-
A2: share own stories and give engaging assign where Ss create worlds based on their lives
-
My D is super excited about getting 2 rotate into my classroom. She's waited 5 years to be with me
-
A2: I feel like this generation needs a reason to care... Helping them find that is half the battle!
-
That is awesome! Do you have siblings/family members both up?
-
Very cool. Amazing, he turned off "mom" part. Even called me Mrs. Csoto w/rest, his choice
-
A2: portfolios- Ss create a legacy by their wk. I want 2 mk them proud N their wk- legacy they made during the time we were 2gethr
-
-
I totally agree. Once they find a reason to care everything else is easier. So hard to find sometimes, though!
-
A3: I'm going to do a Space Exploration theme...I'm SUPER excited!! It's coming together so well!
-
A3 I've used movie 100 Ft Journey and TV shows: Great food truck race, Masterchef, and Cake Boss as themes in my culinary classes.
-
My D wants to call me mom. I said Ms. Mom to you!
-
A3: I CANT DECIDE!!! Help me! DC? Pokemon? Pirates? Jungle? Aweeeeeeeee
-
-
A2: this is a real challenge. Spoke w today abt this: assignments can't just be turned in, returned, & then forgotten.
-
-
A3: Our them is really a lot of questions...What makes a good citizen? a good student? good school? career? worker?
-
A3: trying to use Zootopia for theme. Song fits everything I want, just figuring out logisitics
-
A3: Also thinking about doing a them around Beowulf for 3rd quarter
-
A3. I so love 's Divergent theme. It really speaks to adolescents finding themselves - but I think it'll be PokemonGO
-
-
A3: it's the small details that start to concern me If I pick a theme will the small details fit? if so how? just need to commit!
-
Love all the theme ideas! Ready for Q4? Coming in just 2 minutes!
-
A3: Looking into ARG, so theme as it's being described here would be sci-fi-Ultimately themes need to enhance messages/purposes tho
-
I do love how she has multiple themes throughout the year, I may go with that. I don't want
-
I've thought about space exploration too. Guilds could be different roles on board? or different countries/companies?
-
Why do I keep typing "them"!? haha! ;-)
-
-
I picked theme and am working on small details, felt easier than going the other way.
-
A4: Allows Ss to take risks and do things outside of their comfort zone. Buy-in, engagement, focus, etc.
-
A3: excited to say I'm doing a pirate theme and implementing ideas from and and
-
-
A4. I'm loving the AR elements for especially for students on Autism spectrum to "buy in" to game / share reality
-
A4: When Ss are immersed learning comes alive for them. Creates memories & learning that last far beyond class.
-
A4: if Ss are fully immersed, more engaged, more willing to take risks and give full effort.
-
Avengers / X-men maybe? Side quests to level up or discover new abilities?
-
A4. 2/2 so 4 me it's role playing or maybe an edu version of LARPing but w/o costumes? If that makes sense
-
A4: I like the idea of failure in the game and then a "restart" teaching them to never give up!!
-
I was thinking of a Rogue Astronaut, but I love the super hero theme interweave...hmmm...wheels turning https://t.co/1CFnOoxDXL
-
-
Avengers / X-men maybe? Side quests to level up or discover new abilities?
-
Is it cheating to say it forces Ss to follow Campbell's hero's journey? Being in a situation usually asks that you grow to get out
-
A4. 3/3 As I talk to t's re: and s's who play, FAIL, and still play - T's don't understand why...If only they tried
-
Totally agree. They need to see failure as a reason to keep going, not give up
-
A4: Would you rather read about a trip to Hawaii or EXPERIENCE a trip Hawaii? Same with Ss. https://t.co/ifhDKap93I
-
I like this idea as well. I'm struggling with how to structure a restart without burning through a lot of time...
-
A4: I create an experience w every lesson- I ensure that all Ss r involved thru THEIR interests- then I match standards to lesson
-
A4: risk tasking is a must! Bravery is #1, allowing students to feel as if they are part of the lesson/or actually help create it
-
Love hearing all your ideas! Q5 coming in 2 minutes!
-
I like this a lot. Have some 'safe points' where they can bank their XP...
-
A4: I have a small crush on batman because of Ben A... Hence my DC obsession
-
-
A5: Offer choice often, structure projects to "show off" different skill sets/strengths, cont'd
-
A5 Cont'd: create community where acknowledging strengths in each other is commonplace
-
- Reminds me of the game Chutes and Ladders.
-
-
A2: End of 1st unit, Ss reflect on each other's strengths & their importance to the team. Helps each student feel valued
-
A5. We have monthly grade level awards ceremony honoring captains, leaders, workers, citizens, and students - maybe add gamers?
-
Q5: I'm thinking that 1st thing will be to work together to discuss 7 Habits by Sean Covey, then discuss how they worked together
-
That's a great idea! :) https://t.co/OhsByCG38y
-
-
I like this a lot. Have some 'safe points' where they can bank their XP...
-
A5: structure groups to include different gamer types. Offer multiple paths through tasks?
-
A5:I love "calling" Ss on their strengths! I do it drama style. act like I'm going to point out bad stuff & instead point out good!
-
A5 Create learner interest profiles that ask what roles each S is best at when it comes to group work. Then let them assemble teams
-
I use the 7 Habits of Happy Kids (written by his son) in my class...love them! Going to add PDL this yr https://t.co/ia9mQkerDv
-
-
Q5: I'm thinking that 1st thing will be to work together to discuss 7 Habits by Sean Covey, then discuss how they worked together
-
A5. 2/2 we have class "tribal council" weekly, so modeling recognition happens - getting s's to see strengths/skills of peers
-
A5/2: list the qualities of a good team. We can post those qualities for future
-
- I did this at the end of the year, but I love the idea of doing at the end of each unit.
-
-
Q6 coming up in 2 minutes!
-
A5: Have members of each group be a diff type of gamer, have team bld activity where Ss get to show their talents in beg
-
A5: I make sure I point out SS strength in front of their team mates... So they will learn how to utilize that strength
-
-
A5: I've used - daily recognition & Ss get to nominate students for badges. I do like ideas I'm seeing abt monthly awards
-
A5: This is a challenge! I think relationships are the only way to effectively do this. Work to know Ss interests & talents.
-
A6: Thinking iMovie trailer teaser then scav. hunt clues to the overarching problem and theme....still working on it..
-
A6: Share an exciting intro video and build excitement. Ss create team name & promo video to introducing team to class.
-
A6: still thinking about my beowulf theme start up...
-
A6 Creating a video backstory as an exposition to the moment the narrative of the game begins.
-
Love this idea, Heather! https://t.co/GgteHjDtcH
-
-
A6: Thinking iMovie trailer teaser then scav. hunt clues to the overarching problem and theme....still working on it..
-
-
A6: My 1 game last year at finals... I created a flier advertising the benefits... Everyone read... Ss started saying "no way!
-
A6: waiting for some inspiration for this Q.
-
A6: highest levels lowered # of questions on the final... Ss loved it!
-
I think it's time to plunder!!!
-
Q7 coming up in 2 minutes!
-
-
We are as well. I'm still trying to find all the pieces for my costume! I want a wooden leg!
-
A6: I really want to do a series of pirate videos to introduce each unit- then have a challenge in the video for Ss to accomplish
-
A6. Nothing comes close to intro video, but I can only hope to put something as cool together for students
-
-
A7 I launch bakery missions. 3 diff levels for varying XP points. All require Ss to demonstrate their learning in creative ways.
-
A7: This is one of those details I am still working out. Have to do some serious planning soon as school starts in 3 weeks
-
-
A7: Lots of choice and XP points.I want to have Mission Training, Space Walks, and maybe have someone in charge of Mission Control!
-
A7 I'm hoping our sci-if quests can place Ss in ethical dilemmas similar to those in the books we are reading as a part of the game
-
A7: pondering this in a math class... Bare minimum for proficiency... But extensions yield higher points... Still processing
-
Last question of the night coming up in 2 minutes!
-
A7 Challenges that involve different types of media poster/video/podcast/etc. reaches multiple interests/abilities. Adds variety
-
-
Giving Ss choice in how they present info keeps it engaging, same amt of pts no matter the media type?
-
-
A7 To personalized incentives to engage them in content that they may not otherwise find interesting https://t.co/qceiPyaF2h
-
poster -> proficient
podcast 'interview' -> advanced
video 'lecture' with visuals -> mastery?
-
A7: I'd love to have Ss develop quests in BreakoutEdu format for other classes!
-
A8: I award team & indiv badges for XP. team badges for product quality, efficiency, & sanitation. Indiv for demonstrating PDL.
-
A7: We had our 1st BreakoutEdu yesterday w summer school Ss! They loved solving the quest to unlock locks! https://t.co/fQOU2cgsEz
-
A8: a reward of some kind... Guess would depend on the game?
-
A8: So I'm thinking about doing an AlienGo where they have to accomp. things to capture aliens..
-
-
A8: W/Zootopia theme, Ss will earn police badges at end, feel accomplished in now they get to "police" thier own learning
-
A8: Also want to copy the NASA badge system so students can level up to higher ranks.
-
OH! A locked room mystery could be a fun theme! Side challenges earn clues to escape from room/haunted building?
-
A8. I've mentioned b/f about using https://t.co/qtlWp9ZjJY 1" circular stickers as badges - s's love them and "collect" them all
-
A8. I've mentioned b/f about using https://t.co/NsTJsKPEQ1 1" circular stickers as badges - s's love them and "collect" them all
-
A6. Quests are the new for s's IMHO
-
A*: Soaking up your ideas! ;-)
-
A8: rewarded with points and points gave them stuff... Best idea I had... Music on a test. Ss were digging to find that badge!
-
Your gamification sounds cool. The Ss will love it!
-
love this. I need to find ways to do this in the library, Tisha.
-
A7: a quest essentially wouldn't end (if wanted)- Ts can add on or redefine purpose so Ss can learn multiple lessons/content
-
Tomorrow night is our chat at 5 PST! Theme is People's Choice! Please join us! It's another awesome community!
-
Whew! I love this chat! :-)
-
A8: Ss will walk the plank in my room to earn a medal for their pirate hat and badge for their leadership duties & accomplish.
-
I'm ready for coffee talk time!!!
-
Thank you and the awesome crew for yet another wonderful week talking ! You are all so inspiring!
