Hey #formativechat! Marisa Thompson, HS ELA, Carlsbad, Ca :) Self-advocacy turned out to be my year & I'm proud of the totally unintended result: biggest growth gained from student-reflection/survey? Students' confidence! KEY to self-advocacy! Excited to read people's thoughts!
Here we go with Question 1 tonight: Based on your experience, what are the main barriers that students face in advocating for their own needs? #formativechat
Here we go with Question 1 tonight: Based on your experience, what are the main barriers that students face in advocating for their own needs? #formativechat
Ray from Rhode Island here. A1-I think that learned helplessness is a big barrier. Students are used to adults not listening to them, so they learn not to advocate for themselves. #formativechat
A1 Tradition, over-scaffolding, detailed rubrics --> This is how I get an A. Well-meaning teachers answer Qs instead of supporting skills: finding, attempting, applying, learning. When Ss train to complete & receive, there's no need to reflect or self-advocate. #formativechat
A1: In my experience, students are afraid to advocate for themselves because they are coming from homes in which they are talked down to if they stand up for themselves. #formativechat
A1: Often, they feel that they will not be listened to, or will be judged. Also, sometimes, they are unsure of how to approach the teacher or the subject. #formativechat
A1. Students not feeling trust with their teacher-- that they won't be listened to/heard and will be embarrassed. They will shut down completely. #formativechat#ALPLEARN
A1: A lot of them don't know how b/c they've never had to do it before or they truly don't know what they need b/c they haven't been taught how to self-assess yet. #formativechat
A1: One of the biggest barriers that students face is understanding that their voice is important! They are allowed to have different opinions than parents/teachers and should let them know when they do #formativechat
A1: that they’ve learned how to do “school” so long- answering the questions the teachers have deemed important in the way the t want, when they want, and sitting in the seat the t put them. They don’t know what they need let alone how to begin to ask for it. #formativechat
A1: Some Ss don’t self-advocate bc they don’t have a rapport with a T. I’m interested in Ss who don’t identify with a “struggling” label (ex. IEP) and self-advocating, for them, may feel like saying “I’m stupid; I need help” rather than “Here’s what I need.”
#formativechat
Here we go with Question 1 tonight: Based on your experience, what are the main barriers that students face in advocating for their own needs? #formativechat
A1 if a S is dyslexic it is very hard to advocate an unfunded federal mandate if the school or district does not have the money to provide help. Or if providing help, it is not lawful, meaning not a program taught with fidelity and for the dyslexic brain. #formativechat#READ5305
A1 Traditional and archaic constraints such as time, grades, and teaching practices. They have never seen this modeled. School has been something done to them rather than for them. #formativechat
Here we go with Question 1 tonight: Based on your experience, what are the main barriers that students face in advocating for their own needs? #formativechat
A1: that they’ve learned how to do “school” so long- answering the questions the teachers have deemed important in the way the t want, when they want, and sitting in the seat the t put them. They don’t know what they need let alone how to begin to ask for it. #formativechat
I think Ss also know that some Ts will do the hard work for them if they wait long enough. Instead of empowering Ss, sometimes we unintentionally stunt their growth when we prematurely intervene #formativechat
I teach band in NJ. I foster self-advocacy by letting students determine which scales they are comfortable working on that they need for their music. I let them determine their best to play for me in assessments. Is that self-advocacy in subject area? #formativechat#sbpdchat
Understanding what their needs are. We have so many terms and accommodations (for SpEd) that Ss can sometimes be painfully unaware of the services they receive. Educating Ss to ask for what they need and know the materials they get is a big step.
#formativechat
Here we go with Question 1 tonight: Based on your experience, what are the main barriers that students face in advocating for their own needs? #formativechat
A1: Many times student’s don’t think their voices will be heard. So they elect to stay quiet. Whether it’s a learned behavior or inherent nature not we can work to teach them to start #formativechat
A1- lack of adult support outside of the classroom or the thought of their peers thinking they are “stupid” or not good enough. They care so much about what others think. #formativechat#edu5213SBU
A1: Students don't always know what they need and if they can't articulate what is missing they will likely not say anything at all. Building bridges can help overcome this, but sometimes its not enough. #formativechat
Even in just 6th grade, Ss have this ingrained in them from elem. that questions are supposed to be just about class. So many Ss afraid to speak for themselves and "offtopic" #formativechat#ALPLEARN
A1. This past year, I had several middle school students who were very resistant to new ways of learning. The new changes were by en large AMAZING, but had to fight to remember all the positive and LEARNING that was actually happening! #formativechat
Here we go with Question 1 tonight: Based on your experience, what are the main barriers that students face in advocating for their own needs? #formativechat
Having students set personal goals and reflect on the progress they are making at reaching their goals is a great way to foster student self-advocacy. #formativechat#edu5213sbu
A1 It’s difficult to stand up to a system you don’t have much power in. What happens when we ask students to anonymously state needs? @melissa_mulieri#formativechat
A1: Ss have trouble advocating for their own needs when they feel like they must be perfect on the first try. They don’t see the success in the struggle or failures. #formativechat
A1: Many Ss have difficulty advocating for their own learning because they may not have the language to describe what they need to do in order to succeed. #formativechat
So true. If they are taught to speak for themselves and be “off topic”, Ss will truly learn what it means to be a life-long learner and be inquisitive. #formativechat
Even in just 6th grade, Ss have this ingrained in them from elem. that questions are supposed to be just about class. So many Ss afraid to speak for themselves and "offtopic" #formativechat#ALPLEARN
A1) Because we have not given students an opportunity to be active participants in their own learning, they are often unaware of their own needs and as a result incapable of advocating for them. #formativechat
A1 For many of my Ells it is cultural. The teacher speaks and the students listen in many of their coutries. Self advocation is seen as being disruptive so that is a challenge. #formativechat
A1: this is a good question. In my experience the biggest hurdles they have are themselves. They don’t know how to advocate for themselves. They weren’t taught it and can’t express it well. #formativechat
I think main barriers include pressures of grades, the specific expectations of teachers that vary between classrooms and can be confusing. Also, the social pressures outside the classroom forcing kids into a mold. First time here, hope that makes sense. #formativechat#sbpdchat
Yes. Ss know that there are times if they wait long enough, they don’t have to advocate or act or learn. Ss-Ts rapport is key in breaking out of that rut #formativechat
I'm noticing a pattern of different types of "fear" for Q1. Students' (and anyone's) own fears often stop us from doing what we need to do. #formativechat
A1: Many Ss have difficulty advocating for their own learning because they may not have the language to describe what they need to do in order to succeed. #formativechat
Love that image there on the chalkboard. Relationship building helps the student buy in to the instruction. Makes the student think there is care and concern before grades and assessments. #formativechat#sbpdchat
Yes; we as Ts need to stop calling it “help” as well. Ss need guidance and clarification. “Help” implies a deficit and Ss don’t want to admit a deficit #formativechat
Agreed! The part about being well meaning definitely resonates with me. It's easy to caught up putting a lot of effort into something and take a risk to switch gears. #formativechat
A1: Many Ts may not engage Ss in co-constructing learning goals &/or success criteria, many may not give descriptive feedback that includes those criteria & therefore, Ss may be at a disadvantage when they need to describe any challenges/gaps that they have. #formativechat
There are often social pressures to either be "perfect" or "cool," which get in the way of student learning. These are both pressures we should strive to understand, but fight through to promote learning. #formativechat
I really like this "co-constructing" definitely need more ways for Ss to interact w/peers and with Ts in the classroom, builds a lot of vital skills #formativechat
A1: Many Ss have difficulty advocating for their own learning because they may not have the language to describe what they need to do in order to succeed. #formativechat
So true. Many students with learning differences, do not even realize they have a problem. Or if they do, they don't have the words and courage to tell their leadership or teachers. #formativechat#READ5305
Is there room to ask them what they want to learn? Obviously we are bound to our subject areas. But can't we ask what interests THEM within the content and teach to that? #formativechat
Hi #formativechat ! My name is Lauren and I am a second year student in the elementary ed program at the university of regina! First time here but happy to be!
Even though the top performers in every field are the people who ask for the most help, help-seeking is seen as a sign of weakness or stupidity. We need to destigmatize and elevate help-seeking. #formativechat
My Mac broke on the 6th, shipped out to get fixed, using old netbook, got Mac back, won't charge, they sent a charger today and no cable, so still no Mac :( #formativechat
Ohhh... This is great! We need to model the language our students do not yet use. Sometimes we jump over this step and exptect our Ss to inherently know this vocab. #formativechat
If we engage Ss in co-constructing learning goals and success criteria & give descriptive feedback that captures what Ss did well and what they need to work on, then Ss will develop the metacognitive skills they need to reflect on & describe their learning #formativechat
Yes, I do a lot of project-based learning and my ELL Ss are taken a back by this because it is not the traditional way of teaching. It takes time. #formativechat
A1 For many of my Ells it is cultural. The teacher speaks and the students listen in many of their coutries. Self advocation is seen as being disruptive so that is a challenge. #formativechat
A2: relationships and sincerity—I feel that without those, you are lost. I often model thinking and problem solving strategies for Ss to show them my struggle and have them help me #formativechat
Thanks for sharing this. This gets us thinking. What can self advocacy look like? Does it have to be vocal? What are different ways of responses that we can encourage students to "voice" themselves? #formativechat
There are often social pressures to either be "perfect" or "cool," which get in the way of student learning. These are both pressures we should strive to understand, but fight through to promote learning. #formativechat
I have seen this cultural difference as well. They have to be taught that it is encouraged here. It is still uncomfortable for them, though. #formativechat
A2 SLOW DOWN!!! When Ts focus on curriculum & burdens of regulations we forget that Ss need time and patience If we slow down & set a good tone Ss will grow and respond #formativechat
A2: start w/ day one by valuing their input and that they have a voice in how and what they learn and how they will showcase what they’ve learned. #formativechat
A2 -Foster a growth mindset and make mistakes a positive part of the learning process. I also make sure and thank my Ss every time they ask me a question and always tell them it was a good question. #formativechat
So true! I definitely felt this way when I was a kid, but have learned that collaboration and vulnerability as an adult are so valuable! #formativechat
A2: include the in every step of the process as much as you can. What do you want to learn? How can we show that we learn that? When do you think you’ll be finished with learning task? What do you need to complete task and learn? How can I help you do that? #formativechat
A1 sometimes it’s fear/embarrassment of needing help. Sometimes it is also that Ss over estimate their abilities and don’t realize they need help until it’s too late https://t.co/VCWzrAC4pb#formativechat
A2: It all begins with fostering a relationship with the student so that they feel comfortable talking to us. If students are comfortable with us, they are more likely to advocate their needs. #formativechat
By showing yourself to be a T who will listen to their Ss. Most times Ss have a hard time advocating if they know you are simply going to dismiss them. Consistency and strong relationships built at atmosphere of respect.
#formativechat
Precisely - this will increase their ability to reflect on and make the types of changes they need to make in order to achieve greater success. #formativechat
Right. I make it a point to talk about how the students who are the most successful in my classes come to tutoring. It has to be reiterated quite a bit. #formativechat
A2: Let them know from the start that learning something is very much like training for a sport: it takes perseverance and practice. From the start talk about growth mindset. #formativechat
A2) Give them an opportunity to practice asking for knowledge...even if it is off topic. I did a day where I said, what do you need to know before you graduate? It started with balancing a checkbook, lead to french braiding, and then ended with semicolon use! #formativechat
In order to foster a learning environment where students feel comfortable expressing needs teachers need to build relationships with all of their students and answer all questions honestly and sincerely. #formativechat
A2- be open, honest and vulnerable ourselves. I find that if I tell a story or listen to all types of music I’m opening that door for those conversations to come up. I was diagnosed with leukemia in August and have been out of the classroom this whole year. #formativechat
A2 - Definitely foster positive relationships, focus on learning, allow for a variety of ways to show understanding, emphasis growth mindset, model, celebrate mistakes, try innovative ideas #formativechat
A2. By allowing student voice and choice in the classroom, students are comfortable with expressing their needs. You must build to this, or most students will not feel they have a platform to express their voices. #formativechat
A2: Start by working to form strong relationships with your ss so that they feel comfortable talking to you. It all boils down to those relationships! #formativechat
A2: It needs to be practiced daily through personal reflection & feeback for the T too. Have a dialogue WITH Ss instead of AT Ss about how the lesson went & what they need. #formativechat
A2 Providing reassurance that you are there for them and that this is a safe area where we can question, think, and inspire one another. It MUST start Day 1 and continue until last day #formativechat#ALPLEARN
Right on! I wish the students would ask more questions. It opens up exploration and lets them feel comfortable investigating their needs. Inquiry has to be redefined as a sign of strength! #formativechat#sbpdchat

Model the behavior of needing support or guidance from somebody else. How easy would this be to ‘fake’ with a colleague for student buy in? #formativechat
A2 extensive modeling is important especially metacognition skills. Also helping Ss understand themselves as learners, embrace their current skills and set reasonable goals to move forward #formativechat
A3 I'm HS ELA, so we compare writing with previous essays. Ss love a group paragraph exercise; it leads to those conversations. Maybe before feedback station, Ss can identify their successes/questions. Playlists tailor instruction to individual needs = summer goal! #formativechat
A1: Based on my experiences, the main barriers that students face in advocating for their own needs include the lack of systems in place for students to have a voice and students not being encouraged to use their voice to advocate for themselves and others #formativechat
A2: We can openly value the learning process - rather than focusing totally on the end product/conversation/observation alone as proof of learning. #formativechat
So true! To add on to this, I think it's also about switching up the approach when re-teaching. Show Ss different ways to learn and allow them to recognize what's working for them. #formativechat
A2 cont.- my students have watched me struggle, lose my hair and see me overcome a huge battle. I wouldn’t be here without my #fetschsfighters and they know that. Being open and sharing has made an HUGE impact on my teaching & classroom #formativechat#edu5213SBU
A2 We have an activity in chapter 4 of EMPOWER Your Students that teaches students to distinguish between status goals and learning goals, identify sources of help in pursuing their learning goals, and effectively ask for that help. These are all learnable skills. #formativechat
I think we need to also rephrase for some of our Ss. Instead of “See me for help,” maybe we could ask “What do you need?” Rapport fits in here so we develop conversations to progress learning and provide natural openings for self-advocacy #formativechat

This is going to be some series of events to look back on... There is a light at the end of the tunnel! Maybe not until after #ISTE18, but it's there, nevertheless! #formativechat

A2: I give students a "get to know you" sheet on the first day. One of the questions says, "my teacher can help me learn best by _____" I get some great responses from students! #edu5213sbu#formativechat
A2: Make the atmosphere one where students are encouraged to give the teacher feedback and to discuss issues without judgement. Foster a growth mindset and illustrate times that you have had to advocate for yourself as a student or as an adult. #formativechat
A2: We can openly value the learning process - rather than focusing totally on the end product/conversation/observation alone as proof of learning. #formativechat
Consider using Teacher Empathy Map when design any activity to build student's capacity for advocating for themselves. https://t.co/dbMGftDeJj#formativechat
Absolutely - it's also a great way to build community as you honour different voices, democratize the learning space and model the creation or construction of new learning. #formativechat
Is it possible to hold onto those relationships throughout the years that students are in the same building if not classroom as the teacher they trust? #formativechat
I think sometimes we get frustrated when students do not speak up... We need to reflect. Did we allow their voice? Or just impose our will upon them? #formativechat
Agree 100% What's the point in having something done once and then never learning from it if we failed? For example: what if we could only take a driver's test once? #formativechat#ALPLEARN
Question 3 is here: How can we use formative assessment to help students improve their communication skills (ex: articulate their needs, listen to learn, retain feedback)? #formativechat
Yes - and what better way to of it than to focus more on the destination - value the way students go about learning and/or constructing new knowledge. #formativechat
When is it supposed to come in?!? I'm leaving on Wednesday which is why I said it! lol. I'm making a roadtrip out of it though... You have all week!
#formativechat

A3: Formative assessment can help Ss with their communication skills in a variety of ways. They can demonstrate their learning at another level that is just not rote memorization. #formativechat
I love that idea, I tried something similar last year using @edmodo and it was also a way to have Ss set goals for themselves and go back and reflect #formativechat
A2 You just keep telling them their their opions and ideas are important. You let them know that it is ok to make mistakes and that we all learn together. For me it is constantly reminding the Ss that they have to be active participants in their leaerning. #formativechat
A2: Besides foster relationships, building experiences for students is also important. They will remember how they feel 20 years later, but not necessary what they have learnt. #formativechat
A3 Since FAs are like Lego building blocks that need to be linked have Ss discuss, share, illustrate & present their FAs The more they are in front the easier communication becomes #formativechat
I love giving out anonymous surveys to my students. I use google forms and let them speak their mind periodically throughout the year. I’ve learned so much from these! #formativechat#edu5213SBU
I got it back Friday, my charger didnt work, went to store Sat, tried again, nothing, and the one sent today had no cables, so hopefully tomorrow #formativechat

A3. The more feedback we provide students, the better. Feedback can assist students in self-evaluation and an opportunity to build their skills as self-directed learners. #formativechat#edu5213sbu
Great question. Another one is...is there a way you can help the next teacher build upon the relationships that your students started to build with you? #formativechat
Let's encourage them to ask any questions or voice any concerns. Let's dispel the myth that challenge is negative, that outspokenness is discouraged. Debate should be encouraged #formativechat
Question 3 is here: How can we use formative assessment to help students improve their communication skills (ex: articulate their needs, listen to learn, retain feedback)? #formativechat
I do the same thing! The students react positively to them and really put thought in their answers. I got a lot of terrific feedback last year. #formativechat
A3: Formative assessment can help communication skills through @flipgrid, @goformative, @edjinotes, and interactive Google slides and docs. Students can show their knowledge with a plethora of choice and voice. #formativechat
A2: We develop positive learning environments when we chat with Ss between or outside of classes, let Ss re-do assessments, and ask how things are going. Ss won’t always ask for help if they’re not comfortable #formativechat
A3: It is crucial to include a self-reflection. Students seeing what they got wrong or right and how they could improve is good, but getting them to think about how they ended up there is just as important . #formativechat
Question 3 is here: How can we use formative assessment to help students improve their communication skills (ex: articulate their needs, listen to learn, retain feedback)? #formativechat
A3: We can include formative assessments that the only goal is communication. If the assessment is a written one, you can ask students to articulate their needs in written format. #formativechat
A3: I feedback is essential for growth and by providing consistent feedback, we can help strengthen those relationships and help them learn some more independence as well! #formativechat
Yes! Collaborate with counseling to make sure students get teachers they will be compatible with in the future/have trusted adults to turn to #formativechat our job isn’t just with one set of kids for 180 days....
A3) the trick is to truly use it as formative assessment and avoid the pressure of making it count for a grade. If you can't help yourself, then give them 2nd, 3rd, or as many as it takes chance learning to get full credit...which really just equals full learning! #formativechat
A3 Ss need to see assessment not as a one and done but as an ongoing process. I think as ts we need to set that tone. It’s about framing. I have told my Ss that feedback helps them level up and now they constantly ask for it. It’s about the culture you create #formativechat
A2: Provide examples of assessment work. We can use anchor papers to communicate expectations and increase their conform level in dealing with tasks. #formativechat
I’m a HS ELA T, but I chat with Ss in the Hall, or if I hear someone is making choices that may be detrimental to them, I’ll go find them during my prep or lunch and have a chat #formativechat
A3: Using FA's that provide instant feedback to students and allow students to have a say in the forms of FA's used in the classroom #formativechat#edu5213sbu
A3: Ss can share what they understand about the feedback with others, write responses to the feedback - reflect on whether these are fair points, write their own feedback based on the co-constructed criteria etc. #formativechat
Question 3 is here: How can we use formative assessment to help students improve their communication skills (ex: articulate their needs, listen to learn, retain feedback)? #formativechat
A3: Use tools such as Flipgrid to increase opportunities for students to articulate their thoughts and for teachers to listen and respond with meaningful feedback #formativechat
A3 This year I used video to have the Ss record topics throughout the year. Then I had them periodically review their videos to see growth. At the end of the year they reflected on the body of work and discussed ways to improve and ways they had grown. #formativechat
A3 - Use it to focus on the process and see where the strengths and weaknesses might be on a topic, providing meaningful and timely feedback promotes conversations and understanding, can lead to deeper knowledge and questions, promotes risk taking environment #formativechat
Question 3 is here: How can we use formative assessment to help students improve their communication skills (ex: articulate their needs, listen to learn, retain feedback)? #formativechat
A3: If a S needs to do a reteach lesson w/ me based on their FA, I encourage them to seek me out for help instead of the other way around. I also have them reflect on it & we discuss what problems popped up & how to fix them. Put the ball in their court. #formativechat
A3-When I use @goformative to ask for feedback, they are able to do so without the anxieties of answering in front of the whole class. Also, I am able to respond to their needs in a more timely manner. This is a great stepping stone to self advocacy. #formativechat
A3 We can have them practice asking for help and using feedback as their own lessons within the context of doing a project so they have something meaningful to ask about and respond to. #formativechat
A3: I've just been introduced to Flipgrid - this seems like a great way to practice communication through formative assessment! #edu5213sbu#formativechat
Sorry running late tonight! A1: I feel students don't know how to advocate for themselves so are uncomfortable at first. They also fear saying something incorrect #formativechat
A3: This is not a full answer, but if everyone hasn’t heard: @Flipgrid is now free! Student voice and communication just got more accessible! #formativechat
Question 3 is here: How can we use formative assessment to help students improve their communication skills (ex: articulate their needs, listen to learn, retain feedback)? #formativechat
A3 By allowing Ss to self-reflect on assignments. Ss can see where they truly are in their progress of achieving mastery. It will help them realize if they are struggling, on-task, or past the goal which in turn helps us differentiate their learning. #formativechat#ALPLEARN
A3- use it often and refer back to it so they know it’s important to you. Making sure to have one on one conversations about the information shared. Always let them self-assess. #formativechat#edu5213SBU
A3. Currently in Voxer Book Study reading #LetThemSpeak. (Mostly lurking with craziness in life) The group was just talking about Social/Emotional type exit tickets. This would definitely help with "Articulating Needs." #formativechat
Question 3 is here: How can we use formative assessment to help students improve their communication skills (ex: articulate their needs, listen to learn, retain feedback)? #formativechat
A2 Don't correct the question. Don't presume their perspective or redirect them. Congratulate inquiry and foster self-direction. Let them ask and answer the question the way they want. #formativechat
We love this strategy because it's not only give students a voice but also a way to find out what they are interested in/ anticipate encountering in the real-world!
#formativechat
A2) Give them an opportunity to practice asking for knowledge...even if it is off topic. I did a day where I said, what do you need to know before you graduate? It started with balancing a checkbook, lead to french braiding, and then ended with semicolon use! #formativechat
A3: I use google form to ask ss for their feedback at diff steps. then I follow through with classroom discussion or individual conference. Disc and conf is so crucial to 1, build relationship, 2, show you are listening and give them Practice using their voices. #formativechat
Thank you for a great chat tonight. This PLN is always refreshing, evolving, and revolutionizing my thought process as an educator! Thank you! Have a great week. #formativechat
It's funny I have never participated in an #edchat before this masters class. I have taken part of #formativechat twice now and always walk away learning something new.
A3 Joining Late... personal goal setting - Ss use 4 Cs of learning to improve cooperation collaboration communication & critical thinking #formativechat
A2: community building and being authentic with students. Making the classroom a safe place where everyone feels valued and heard. Admitting when we make mistakes and talking through our thoughts out loud during challenges. #formativechat
I have only tried this strategy with my tough kiddos, but I would talk to them when I greeted them at the door. I also would talk to them during lunch, recess, basically anytime I could. I honestly saw a change in these kiddos and I had less behavior problems. #formativechat
Thanks for joining me and @Rdene915 for #formativechat everyone! We are both going to be at #ISTE18 and would love to meet up! Let us know if you going to be there!
Thanks for joining #formativechat everyone! We are in the midst of still reading Q2 responses and learning a lot! We appreciate you all sharing your insights and experiences this week!
It depends on the unit/lesson. Generally I ask: what did you like? What did you dislike? Do you have suggestions for improvement? Was there a method that would have worked better for you in this situation? Do you have any suggestions for other programs? ETC #formativechat
Some of the things we have been talking about, I wrote about earlier, having time to reflect in the summer is always good https://t.co/q7p23KknqE#formativechat
A3: Giving students choice in assessment types. allowing them to use tools such as @Flipgrid to practice. Conference with them, set up peer conferencing by modeling effective feedback giving & receiving. #formativechat
Question 3 is here: How can we use formative assessment to help students improve their communication skills (ex: articulate their needs, listen to learn, retain feedback)? #formativechat
Not a problem at all! I have a learning difference (not a disability) and I have struggled in life, but it never stopped me from accomplishing a lot and being very successful. We are all different and students need to know that too! #formativechat#READ5305
On the first day of school I ask more getting to know them questions, how much they study, their feelings about math. Then throughout the semester I ask content/ teaching ?’s and then put in how are you doing, anything you want me to know. Etc. #formativechat#edu5213SBU
I read it as any student of any ability knowing or not knowing struggling to advocate. I think there are many different interpretations and answers to this question. #formativechat#READ5305
A1: A lot of teachers don't listen. Also, kids are taught to listen to adults and that adults know what's best for them. They are not taught how to respectfully advocate for themselves. #formativechat
Here we go with Question 1 tonight: Based on your experience, what are the main barriers that students face in advocating for their own needs? #formativechat
The problem is not getting what they deserve. It IS a problem when a school denies the S's right to a dyslexia program with fidelity and a certified dyslexic teacher. That is a PROBLEM they face. Their problems are our responsibilities as educators. #formativechat#READ5305
A3: Refer back to their formative assessment when addressing the topic. Give feedback on the formative, ask questions, create a conversation. #formativechat
Question 3 is here: How can we use formative assessment to help students improve their communication skills (ex: articulate their needs, listen to learn, retain feedback)? #formativechat
Great discussion on #formativechat and student advocacy. We have to start with safe and inviting classrooms and build relationships in order to allow Ss to self advocate their individual needs. #FCPSVANGUARD
Yes! I love how you brought up the point of celebrating mistakes. So much of self-advocacy is recognizing and being comfortable with areas for improvement. #formativechat

true! I think it also makes us educators more attune to the learning process, listen to learners more carefully, and thus provide them with better support. #formativechat
I love your comment and especially about having a growth mindset. I like using the word, "yet" and encourage my students to use it, know what it means and feel that hope when they use it too. Great analogy to sports too! #formativechat#READ5305
Great analogy, Brian! It's important for students to be able to connect their learning experiences. This can help them better understand it and communicate about it. #formativechat
Oral language skills, opportunities for cooperative learning and group sharing and exposure to world challenges are some that come to mind that could be helpful to helping Ss communicate more effectively and confidently. #formativechat#READ5305
