#EsportsEDU Archive

Competitive gaming is making it to the mainstream! Competitions are selling out venues like Madison Square Garden and online streaming of Esports is as popular as viewing of professional athletic events. Colleges are starting to provide scholarships for competitive gaming. It is time to build the pipeline to prepare students for these opportunities while honoring their interests and valuing their skills. This chat is aimed at building a community around the growth of Esports in grades 6 though 12 which will naturally feed into the college programs. Join us for the weekly #EsportsEDU chat at 7:30 pm ET. It is a 30 minute chat that will have one question / topic each week to guide the discussion. Use the hashtag #Esportsedu or join us via participate.com at participate.com/chats/EsportsEDU

For #esports practice this week, we ditched the computers & went analog to practice our calls & rotations. Players left w/ a better understanding of the importance of positioning and “doing your job” in Rocket League. Discipline wins games! #education #esportsedu #fhleads #edtech

Q1 / Tonight's Topic: How can we move from a casual game club setting to a truly competitive #esports program? #esportsedu
  • mr_isaacs - Moderator Nov 15 @ 7:37 PM EST
A1: I have been introducing games that are popular in #esports to my game club students and playing games like #starcraft2 with my #lunchbunch. I figure exposure will at least give these titles a chance. In the end, you can lead a horse to water... #esportsedu

I think joining a league or organizing a season with other local schools helps. Forming solid teams, holding scrims and taking time to review gameplay and talk strategy. Focusing on team health and dynamics. #EsportsEdu

absolutely - at least joining the league creates the option for kids to participate and I believe once that legwork is done more kids would express interest and get more involved. Good point. #esportsedu

A1 at my school, I’d be thrilled just to get a real gaming club going. But it might be better to skip ahead to organized esports to encourage discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, strategy, etc. #esportsedu

A1 I’ve coached varsity football, wrestling, and track for 11 years. I’m bringing the same mindset to #esportsedu. From the beginning I’ve treated it like a sport, not a club.

We have discussed this in our district as we begin the planning process and have determined that sport is truly what it needs to be. A team just like any other. And we are excited to offer an #esportsEDU opportunity to our kids.

I went the opposite direction. We picked one game & formed a team around it. I hope to expand, but I can’t imagine running a practice with more than one game. Rutgers esports is coming in Monday to review film with kids. I feel overwhelmed having one varsity #esportsedu team 😂.
