State of the time, but it might be.
Thank you for having us at tonight. We are a new PD company designed by teachers for teachers and we are excited to learn from you
Welcome to . Tonight's chat will be moderated by .
We will use the Q1 A1 format and please don’t forget to use in your responses.
Please introduce yourself.
Hello - environmental educator just moved to TN. Happy to join the chat. Thanks. What kind of PD do you offer?
Michael Stone, Albert Einstein Fellow, former Calc and CS teacher in Chattanooga
What's up tweeps? I'm Mike, an English and ESL teacher and a TN Teacher fellow
hello all 10 year math science educator happy to join. waz up
A1 This is a TOUGH ? for me, but I'd have to say the first TNCore training conducted by . It really stretched my thinking
I loved a math PD I went to several years ago in Hamilton County. It was super interactive and gave me ownership over my learning
How so? What did they do to stretch you?
awesome! https://t.co/TvbbmwkLcO
The best PD leadership workshop where that was 2 days long, the focus was on us strengthening our own voice, trusting our instinct.
I learned about and justifying my answers with evidence. I wasn't used to doing this in an ed. setting
Great point. That is so important and not necessarily an intuitive part of teacher development https://t.co/8qPMUi9tHu
I learned about and justifying my answers with evidence. I wasn't used to doing this in an ed. setting
i notice there is such a difference in PD it is hard to know if one is good ahead of time
These things were not components of my pre-CCSS teacher ed program at college. I'm sure they are now
. I wish they were…but still many teacher prep programs are missing this important piece
A2
I always look for PD that can impact the way I teach…immediately. Capacity building is huge. No sit and get!
A2 I look for PD that will teach me something new that I can implement in my classroom.
i look for something that builds on a strength or supports a weakness. It must be something I see as adding value.
A2 I sometimes attend share sessions where Ts just sit around and share ideas over a certain topic.
I love too…but sometimes I really wish I could have an expert help me shape my craft. https://t.co/WJ8uPF7ghe

- I am looking forward to the Summit next week as solid PD.
Not to say teachers aren’t experts…but you know what I mean? A great T helping me polish my skills and find new ones
A2 if topics are of interest to my growth and of the people present have expertise that interests me https://t.co/5SGrPcnDP8
I too am looking forward to summit should be amazing looking forward to presentation on
will be great non district PD.
you know I have to ask, where do you find funds to attend these? ISTE will cost me ~$5000 in CO! https://t.co/S9R1aMPn9i
I won't do ISTE this year probably - I often get one big event a year, speak to reduce cost often
A3
I’ve had a hard finding high quality PD in the area and it’s hard to travel often. Loved STEM Fellowship!
great suggestion - try to present so you grow professionally and get support of school leaders.
. blended learning conference
A3 I present at conferences too so that I can get in for free or at discount. In the process, I've really enjoyed presenting
- join the converation - what is your favorite PD?
So Q3 follow up question…
When you present, what key elements do you make sure to include?
A3b I look at the audience of events and decide on my topics- diff depending on if Ts, admin, tech mostly https://t.co/bTqKj8lXrP
So Q3 follow up question…
When you present, what key elements do you make sure to include?
a sense of joy for the opportunity to share my ideas with others.
I include things that Ts can use right away. I always think "If I were attending this session, what would I want out of it?"
Great Point! you have to tailor content to the audience or the PD is a complete waste of time/money https://t.co/iywm7GbUNI

The ones where I can choose: edcamps, online self-pace, conferences.
Couldn’t agree more. I want to make sure, if I’m presenting, that I would like being in my audience! https://t.co/IYE2Icjdlf

Does CS stand for computer science? Just guessing...
computer science … yes
sorry…might have jumped the gun a bit on this one :) https://t.co/lPDnO3WThu
Does CS stand for computer science? Just guessing...
the basic vocabulary involved in computational thinking
Q4 alternative …
Do you / Should you integrate computer science/computational thinking in your class?
A4 I think it'd be helpful for me to learn how to code. From there, how to integrate that into English class, I have no idea
Great to know. You’re 11th grade ELA? You might want to check out
Great intro to CS PD!

I don't really want computational thinking in my class. I want divergent, non-linear thinking
A4 computational thinking should be in all classes. CS is a harder sale for me. Something has to give or change so possible
a school.system should have a plan for every grade to be touched. Yes.
students could design their own webpage for blogging maybe?
I hear you, but I think I can make case…just maybe not in 240 characters https://t.co/EJ2yjTkXFF

I agree… Modern CS/CT is all about creative problem solving and documentation.
problem is fishing time in curriculum where it doesn't feel like an add-on. I want it done well if done.
Maybe...but I'm not sure I can justify them spending the time on it with sites like Weebly out there.
This is hard in HS, but we have a great integrated CS strategy for K-7. https://t.co/CWlPVUS6hr
problem is fishing time in curriculum where it doesn't feel like an add-on. I want it done well if done.
and the hard part is Ts already feel pressed for time- many don't even talk digital citizenship because of "time"
Definitely have to find the balance between developing tech skills and stealing time from core content https://t.co/GegWifdvvG

Sorry I have to run a bit early! I've been chatting at my daughters' play rehearsal and it just ended. Thanks for the chat!
and districts having the tools to do it
It’s ridiculous this is still a problem…but clearly it is still a major problem.
I have never attended a , that would be very cool. Wish I could find one near me.
A5 I get something out of anything I go to, sometimes I just have to be more intentional than others https://t.co/v7ka1TeJZq
Awesome Todd! thanks for joining us for your first :) https://t.co/ISFXFbqdYj
never attended one. This chat is my first foray into finding ways to improve my tech skills to enhance teaching
HUGE problem, for some districts bandwidth and lack of devices/support are insurmountable to Ts to tackle it
A5
The best 1:1 training I went to was an edcamp where I met The training was a 5 out of 10, but I met GREAT people!
I love roundtable, share your finds, networking, Qs asking events that intro me to new ideas
I would agree- it opened the door for relationships that allowed to more learning though https://t.co/vtlQ6sOkIE

In know this is a small chat tonight, but hang around for the BIG reveal a the end!
I think we all have diff needs/goals/starting places when attending conferences. It's hard for training to hit everyone
I’d love to see another about CS. I’m curious about your hesitancy…wondering if I’ve lost perspective.
great point. Probably can’t find a genuinely effective one-size-fits-all PD https://t.co/OIeaqQSqd1
I think we all have diff needs/goals/starting places when attending conferences. It's hard for training to hit everyone
A. Not enough devices B. Focusing on integrating tech well is my current goal. C. Ts already feel taking on too much
A6 working towards that with integrated units in our ES-Haven't yet due to mismatching of units in mapping https://t.co/sUFw2o9vjZ
make sure to use in your response so everyone in the chat can see and join in :)
You're not alone. Many Ps want it but want all the other things too. Creating electives next year in ES https://t.co/RG4pV7fZcd
Ok. I can see all of those as valid points. I just keep watching my 1st grader and wondering why she gets no CS
crazy creative! We’d love to have you come to our integrated elem CS PD … we don’t want CS to steal from math/ela
in your opinion, would you want CS skills in your ES child or ability to use tech for learning? Curious
We would like to invite you to attend 1 of our FREE trainings in June in Nash & Chatt
PD participants get $100 courtesy
cs (especially in ES) is about teaching Ss to use tech to enhance the learning/production process.
I see two separate ideas. Meeting the 4 C's of tech integration AND CS. Time for both hard! https://t.co/4zV9hmBHPU
I see those as the same thing. tech for learning is really what cs is all about.
do you think computational thinking is happening without tech in elem? Even cup stacking in gym class is that right?
that's why I'm asking...ill look at them. I can't even get keyboarding in curriculum well though :(
