The first Twitter edchat in the Philippines, helping teachers grow their PLN, use tech in the classroom and promoting a culture of teachers helping teachers.
I'm a literacy coach, MYP English teacher, and international literacy consultant in Tokyo, Japan. I'm thrilled to be moderating the chat today. #edchatph
Good morning #EdChatPh Just dropping by to say hi! I love this PLN! Great job sustaining the passion @ginoloko! Shameless plugging but I hope to work with #EdChatPh, especially those based in the Philippines! #SparkEmpathy with @EmpaticoOrg Have a great chat!
I am proud to share that I will be part of the Founding @EmpaticoOrg Connector team. Together with other passionate and innovative educators, we will collaborate to help #SparkEmpathy and #SpreadMoreKindness. Looking forward to this amazing collaboration!
Create time in your schedule. The best part of twitter is that you can do what you want on your own time. Even if you cannot be in the chat when it happens, you can still follow the chat and respond. Utilize your resources so that they work for you!

A1: Read, read, read! Check-in with your PLNs. At the busiest of times, take at least a few moments to REFLECT. Are you still grounded to your why? What might you change to do even better? Reflection is such an important part of learning. #edchatph
A1 - I think this comes from lots of personal reflection and wanting to get better. There is so much useful information that is available. Technology has made learning about new techniques so much more accessible than years ago. #edchatPH
A1 A desire to learn is cultivated and supported. Reflecting on the day's class, how it went, sparks the question: How can I be a better teacher? And of course, supported by admin, with collaborative and reading time. #edchatPH
A1: As Ts, we must cultivate the growth mindset to instill it in our Ss. I love to challenge myself by taking on projects that are slightly harder than what I am comfortable with. #edchatph

Right. Pre-service education is catching up on reflective teaching and learning. Self-regulation is a necessary skill to grow in the profession. #edchatPH
A1: Now that we have PD on our fingertips, we can set aside the time everyday/weekly/monthly. I am doing this now & doing my best to set aside time for the @Seesaw ambassador training. #edchatph
A1: As Ts, we must cultivate the growth mindset to instill it in our Ss. I love to challenge myself by taking on projects that are slightly harder than what I am comfortable with. #edchatph
A1: When time is limited, Ts can take ownership of their PD by participating in chats, attending PD & reading books. When time permits, Ts can push outside their boundaries & go a step further by moderating a chat, presenting their own PD & writing their own book/blog!
#edchatph
A1b - Find an area that of teaching that is most important to you and start developing that skill. Many times we try too many things at once. We all have strengths. Focus on those, then hit parts that you aren’t as strong at. #edchatPH
A1: We teachers really do have to make a conscious time commitment to seeking out PD, whether it be in a formal or informal way. Being involved in these chats helps me! I get to hear ideas from some of the best educators of modern time. Can't beat that for free PD!

For any of us to become better at our craft, we must first recognize the need to improve. @KidsDeserveIt and should always see the best we have to offer. #edchatph
Good for you. I am using every opportunity to interact with teachers and learn from them. I ask for their suggestions on how we can improve the school. And in conferences, one of those most excited to learn even if I organize them. #edchatPH
A1 Baby steps: join one Twitter chat, attend 1 Edcamp experience, read a professional text. It is hard to fit all in a given day but if one moves beyond their comfort zone, they can reap the benefits of a healthy professional life. #edchatph Carol ELA Consultant from Long Island
This really has me thinking. How do we inspire teachers to learn? Some of us hear "PD" and shut down, assuming it will lead to yet another education trend that will soon fall by the wayside like so many before it.
#edchatph
A2: Those in positions of power confusing leadership w/ control. It's not about control, but empowering—creating a space where Ts can cultivate their own autonomy. That can't happen in a vacuum of control, but it can flourish in an environment filled w/ trust & agency. #edchatph

A2 - Time, support and really not understanding the keys to improving. We assume that educators know what they need to do for success in the classroom. I don’t see that as true. I’m a completely different teacher today than 30 years ago. Must love our jobs to improve. #edchatph
A2: Getting the support we actually need. Right now, we are trying to create a cohort to build a PLN for #tcrwp. It’s finding the time that fits all of us. #edchatPH
This is an important point. I think we can change the negative connotation in PD by giving teachers back their choice and voice in the PD they experience. #edchatph

This is why I love @EdcampUSA because it takes away the experts because everyone becomes a participant/contributor & folks feel comfortable collaborating #edchatph

If you get a chance, please join @MrsHopp126 as she moderates #teachpos this Sunday night at 7:30 est, 6:30 cst, 5:30 mnt and 4:30 out west. She is covering those hard to reach students. Should be great. #edchatPH
A2: When Ts are trusted, they are more likely to take risks and advance their teaching. My administration trusted me to experiment with robotics and engineering, and we ended up with state Champions and world competitors. #edchatph
We all suffer from it. #edchatPH It takes so much effort to go against the compunction to criticize first before looking for solutions. Yet here we are, willing to take it on. Thank you, #Eduheroes

Q3: Last week, we discussed ways to support new teachers. How can we ensure that new teachers feel supported while also ensuring that they have agency and autonomy? #edchatph
It has been my promise to myself this year that I will be positive & create that nook surrounded by positive people. It has to be a conscious effort. #edchatPH

I'm seeing some really good progress lately by asking the question, "What did you mean by that?" I have seen several times where bad feelings were avoided by asking that. #edchatph

A1 PD is ongoing, “...teachers must take charge of their own professional development. ‘And I don’t mean for one year, I mean for the rest of your life’ (11). If you have not created a one-year plan for professional learning, start now.” (Steven L. Layne, 2016) #edchatPH
A3: We must build relationships with new Ts. Open up true dialogue and treat them with respect. This builds trust. When there is trust, they will know they can come to us for support AND that they are valued and trusted to make their own professional decisions, too. #edchatph
Great chat! Leave everyone with this.
There will always be reasons to find an excuse not to get better. Instead, remember that our students need our help every single day in school. Our jobs change lives for the millions of children. It’s a honor to teach. #edchatph
One of the first things we did in my department was send out a survey to determine which type of PD is important to our Ts. I also think that it is important to model the type of engaging and empowering teaching that we want for our students when designing PD. #edchatph

A3 it’s important to pair up new teachers w/mentors on the campus, maximize your champions/ILT on campus to check in on them & help coach them up, but also remember to not overwhelm them, feedback is important for growth, lots of encouragement goes a long way #edchatPH

A3. I believe , that like students new teachers also need champions. #edchatph and so a mentor mentee relationship needs to be established and followed through till the teacher has made a place for herself in the new system.
Yes, opening up true dialogue is vital and so, so powerful. Dialogue builds trust, and trust opens the door to true relationships. And it's all about relationships. #edchatph

A3: Admin should cultivate a tribal community whose goal is to improve Ss achievement. Seeing our leaders working with our Ts in the front lines goes a long way in motivating educators to do more for our Ss. #edchatph
A3 Our new teachers will replace us someday. We should pass on what we can, share as much, and of course, engage them in productive conversations. #edchatPH

A3 As a new teacher in public school it's the environment and workload. For this year alone there had been 4 cases of suicide of new teachers #edchatph
A3: We need to be open to collaboration and mentoring, both as a mentor and as a mentee. As teachers, we live most of our professional lives in our classrooms, and having co-educators to bounce ideas with helps us learn more effective teaching strategies. #edchatph

A2. ‘Teacher Agency’ includes experiences, setting goals, and seizing the “to do” list. I am my biggest obstacle to ‘teacher agency’. There may be outside factors, but ultimately I am responsible for my growth as an educator. #edchatPH
a3 I think it's important to look for and point out particular strengths that new teacher brings to a department. We can encourage them by trying some of their ideas. #edchatph

A4: Teachers must be respected and valued as professionals. They should be given choice and voice in their PD opportunities. Too many times all PD is mandated "from above" with no input from teachers. That must change. #edchatph
That is a sobering statistic. It's vital that teachers are valued as professionals—this includes valuing the need for a work-life balance and self care. #edchatph
Sorry I have been having internet connection issues.
Allow Ts to voice their opinions & recommendations to staff in a discussion. Allow Ts the ability to seek out PDs that are of interest to them & then share with the staff in a group setting. This creates more learning!#edchatph

A3b A welcoming environment where a new teacher can get support from Mentors who are not just subject experts but also caring inspiring leaders #edchatph

A3. It is imperative that a Beginning Teacher (BT) Support Program is implemented in a school or school system. A BT mentor is essential! Those daily check-ins & weekly coaching meetings reassure the BT and encourage their growth. #edchatPH

A4. I believe ownership of professional development and learning should actively be encouraged by school districts, local schools, and within professional learning teams/networks. When teachers own it so will students. #itstartswithus#edchatPH#BloomingOneMindAtATime
