A1 R&R allows me to give my mind a break which helps me feel rejuvenated. Taking time for me renews my body & mind.
A1 Balance is important in all endeavors. Our plates are full and hectic, we need R&R to keep healthy and be optimal.
RT
Q1 Why is rest & relaxation important in a COL?
A1: Nobody can give their best if they don't regenerate once in a while. All work and no play...
A1) Educators need the chance to recharge their batteries - step away and refresh.
Makes Michele a dull girl! https://t.co/X9LbDt2Cty
A1: Nobody can give their best if they don't regenerate once in a while. All work and no play...
Weird, I don't even remember how to do that.
A1 When I don't get enough rest it can negatively affect
my mood, immune system, memory, & stress level.
A1 Need R&R so we are energetic and can focus on learning.
Yes! I am doing some fun reading & catching up with family & friends. I am heading to NYC on Thursday.
A1: It is important to relax and have time to simply break and recharge just like any other activity.
A1: Recharge and refresh. Allows us to rengage with new energy, focus, and creativity.
A1: Rest and relaxation is crucial for a healthy body and mind. Important to have energy and feel good for COL
I am multi tasking tonight helping my daughters both study for upcoming tests, I will be in and out of the chat
A1 We need to model healthy lifestyle balances for Ss - and just straight up chill to recharge. https://t.co/LU6Y4cj1eA
RT
Q1 Why is rest & relaxation important in a COL?
A1: We need to model what it looks like to be a "whole person".Ss need to see us being real people. Plus we need to be real people.
A1 Interesting article in Toronto Star today about how sleep & sleep management is important for his level athletes.
You can try, but going a hundred miles an hour all the time will break something at some point.
A1: As with our own children, stress in an educator can be felt by Ss. Learning & relationships suffer.
Like the saying: absence makes the heart grow fonder.
A1-when too stressed/overwhelmed everyone can feel it, relationships can suffer. Leads to lizard to lizard conflict, not in cortex
A1: r&r is critical - mindfulness and meditation can bring about great benefits with short periods of rest https://t.co/UbYTorPEAy
A group of us are heading in for the day. We don't have it all planned, but that is part of the adventure.
A1 Lack of rest can cause people to just go through the motions
A1: We owe it to our staff and students. Nobody is at their best when they are worn down & worn out.
Got to get off the coaster at some point! https://t.co/9UzFKvFQL1
You can try, but going a hundred miles an hour all the time will break something at some point.
Thus a Culture of Compliance! https://t.co/tpsy6yXkQR
A1 Lack of rest can cause people to just go through the motions
We have some new PLN members here- please make sure to connect and create a true COL!
A1 We need some R & R from the "job" of teaching but never needed from the "joy" of learning.
A1: We need time to rekindle our passions, reflect, tune out the noise.
A1 If I am not rested I am not the best teacher I am capable of. Students also need to be rested to perform at best potential.
Should have read “high level athletes.” I hate auto-correct! Roger Federer now tries for 12 hours sleep each night!1
Very important! I need to delete work email from my phone from time to time to unplug. Hard for a Type A person.
Q2 How do you find time for R & R?
Absolutely! Kids pick up on our verbal & non-verbal. https://t.co/TxcB2RWAP6
A1: As with our own children, stress in an educator can be felt by Ss. Learning & relationships suffer.
The AP training will help you create a PLC and ACDC videos are great for flipping the classroom. https://t.co/HlzxWWSIUU
Hopefully an intense week in Chicago will get me ready - along with
Hey ! Megan, joining late but happy to be here!
I agree, we shouldn't just be getting through the day
RT Q2 How do you find time for R & R?
RT
Q2 How do you find time for R & R?
A2: Easy not to take time for R&R- must be intentional and build it in weekly calendar. There is always time for your health!
A2) Educators should be proactive in planning R & R.. Sometimes you have to make the most of what your schedule allows.
A2 Often you have make/schedule time for R&R and healthy activities.
A2) Now that is an interesting question.
A2: Have to carve out time - No work weekends don't just happen; they must be planned.
Intentionality is critical for R & R. Plan for it.
A2 With three kids in activities, a lot of my rest comes as a fan in the bleachers. I also try to protect my weekends.
A2: It's honestly a struggle. I'm finding that it's really about being present where I am - leaving my phone in the other room.
A2: Schedule it! If meetings and walkthroughs can be scheduled, put R&R in your calendar and you'll follow through!
A2: Consistently working to model a balanced life with family, friends & interests is key to remaining healthy and positive for S's
A2 Worst weeks, block time in eves for just me. Best weeks, walking outside whenever I can, buying a new book, dining out!
A2: You have to carve out time for it or it won't happen. And you should not feel guilty for doing it.
A1: Even 10 minutes here and there can make a world of difference! https://t.co/3PNmDXKpHd
Q2 How do you find time for R & R?
A2 It helps to schedule/plan down time. Making it a priority & just as important as other tasks
A2-go to house and take his money in Texas Hold Em, Easy money!
A2 R and R could also be partaking in a hobby or activity you enjoy to recharge! For me it's golf
A2: During the rush of the school year I have to let R&R come to me...teaching, coaching, & parenting leaves little time.
A1: R & R is needed to recharge and be able to give 100% to each other. COLs take energy, healthy energy, but energy.
Heard that in Europe they work fewer hrs yet are more productive-that says something about R&R.
A2) I tell teachers that you have to take care of yourself first.
I agree, when I am not rested I can't fight off all of those germs in my classroom
A2: When possible, we like to plan vacations that leave the phone & computers behind.
Be present.
https://t.co/ziiInlWXa4
A2: It's honestly a struggle. I'm finding that it's really about being present where I am - leaving my phone in the other room.
A2 I have never been able to work out the type of downtime I'd like as EDU and parent. Just accepted that. It was worst as 9-12 ELA
A2 Many of us need to completely disengage from technology to "find the time" for R & R. Becoming very difficult.
Love this about not feeling guilty! Thank you https://t.co/0JW5x1W5sR
A2: You have to carve out time for it or it won't happen. And you should not feel guilty for doing it.
COLs take energy, healthy energy, but energy... GREAT answer https://t.co/m5eintSzB4
A1: R & R is needed to recharge and be able to give 100% to each other. COLs take energy, healthy energy, but energy.
A2: not sure it's really possible in today's culture of accountability. Lots of pretty platitudes about it, but little real time
A2: Honesty with students is important; tell them rest is a priority for a couple of days - then expect to offer the same in return
A2b: Try to combine things, get creative...rock out while doing the dishes https://t.co/3PNmDXKpHd
Q2 How do you find time for R & R?
build in staff R&R even if it is a minute or two at a staff mtg!
A2: I make agreements with myself regarding time on the weekend and evenings so I can be 100% present for my family.
That's what summer is for, right?
A2: Finding time isn't the hard part for me - its actually TAKING the time. It's there, I often just work through it. Oops:)
A2 R&R happens when get home and do nothing but play w kids for an hour. Nonnegotiable! Also practice breathing/mindfulness in car
Love that Megan > healthy energy!
https://t.co/Bmav38TRGX
A1: R & R is needed to recharge and be able to give 100% to each other. COLs take energy, healthy energy, but energy.
A2 Put myself in positions I cannot possibly be tethered = yoga, running, hiking
Nice to have wknds off...but often sets me back on Mon.
A2) Believe it or not is relaxing for me.
Perfect word for R&R---> Nonnegotiable https://t.co/ywguGs1Oig
A2 R&R happens when get home and do nothing but play w kids for an hour. Nonnegotiable! Also practice breathing/mindfulness in car
Tough one - leave the phone behind. https://t.co/C86vJkrVMM
A2: When possible, we like to plan vacations that leave the phone & computers behind.
your welcome! It is so important to take time for yourself! It makes you a better version of yourself for others.
Truth! I never seem to get away from a Sunday night cram session. https://t.co/Dl3uaYxRQy
Nice to have wknds off...but often sets me back on Mon.
. I've instated zero tech nights where I just shut down all the things and wing it - I do remember how to read maps!
Reading through all of these answers it seems like we're running away from our tech. Really been loving my analog watch lately.
Maybe more importantly, T's need to be encouraged by leaders to enjoy & balance personal interests vs. work to stay fresh for S's.
week of from work (I teach middle school science) AND week off grad school (M.Ed. Cohort...graduate in April)!
"Take care of the ppl that take care of the Ss" Heard that today from a mentor!
YES! Ts ----> Please take time for yourselves. You deserve it! https://t.co/HFvHbkVtVz
Maybe more importantly, T's need to be encouraged by leaders to enjoy & balance personal interests vs. work to stay fresh for S's.
Love this! Un-tether your personal time! https://t.co/BXVDshBuXI
A2 Put myself in positions I cannot possibly be tethered = yoga, running, hiking
Q3 How do you build R & R into your classroom/school?
A2: I meditate and read. Of course I have to redirect the thoughts of work when I meditate &the books I choose are all Educational.
This year I've tried to be better at saying no so I can say yes more often to things I love
Just breathe...
https://t.co/sttquKA1XP
A2 R&R happens when get home and do nothing but play w kids for an hour. Nonnegotiable! Also practice breathing/mindfulness in car
A3 I am looking for ideas for school R & R.
.....and GO!
RT Q3 How do you build R & R into your classroom/school?
I bet that is difficult for you to do and it is so very important.
This is key! https://t.co/V62TK47zWn
This year I've tried to be better at saying no so I can say yes more often to things I love
A2 Weekend naps and quality time with my girls without needing to leave the house. We love family game night or movie night
A3: Days where students have multiple choices and self-paced work with music and no pressure.
A3: I try to take a brain break with my Ss by watching a S chosen or video. I have had Ss meditate too.
A3) Our PTO provides "luxury lunches" for our staff (2 hour lunch off campus) once a year.
A3 I planned a fun work-out challenge for Ts when school started. Working out is a great way to reduce stress.
A3 Brain breaks are a great way to break up the routine, get Ss moving, and improve focus.
I think we need a break from work period. Whether it's using tech or not.
A2: Relaxing is a matter of creative survival. Fail to make the time and do so at your own peril
A3: Try to build in time during a mtg or PD that allows Ts to go outside of the typical agenda. Creativity can be relaxing
A3: We have fun together, do silly things, have conversations about things that are important to us https://t.co/B4Cu9CJghg
Q3 How do you build R & R into your classroom/school?
OHHHHHH! I heart this! Check it out https://t.co/Qu6EDyZGPQ
A3) Our PTO provides "luxury lunches" for our staff (2 hour lunch off campus) once a year.
A3-mindfulness, guided imagery, 10 minute silence, drawing, practice relaxation response, belly breathing, high interest act.,
. bring a yoga teacher to your school for your staff...help them create the space:)
A3 Doesn't everyone just have kids sit in bean bag chairs all day?
A3: Create a vibe for learning first...no need to squeeze every minute of every class period. Let the learning flow.
A3: I have recently developed the habit of hitting pause on a project & walking away or just sitting for a few minutes. Helps!
A3: Personally I don't. Work through the day to make time for family. For Ss I make sure task is varied to alleviate mental fatigue.
A3) I close the building on the weekend. Not all like it. Go home to your families.
I don't know many who are good at saying no.
You work hard, you deserve a break even when you think you don't have time for it
We have done a scavenger hunt for ingredients in recipe, then cooked together and then ATE. So fun! https://t.co/ULggOKiU1X
A3 I planned a fun work-out challenge for Ts when school started. Working out is a great way to reduce stress.

A3) I close the building on the weekend. Not all like it. Go home to your families.
A3: Our amazing PTA changed our mailroom into a Ts lounge so Ts could eat lunch in an relaxed environment! https://t.co/QekrP9xOMJ
Be careful - did you see about parent religious objections to yoga in GA?
A3: In classrooms, often getting students up and moving is just the "rest" they need - a break from sitting.
This is important. My colleagues would work every weekend too if I opened the school. https://t.co/LEQnGNvno3
A3) I close the building on the weekend. Not all like it. Go home to your families.
. - paired learning walks for 15 minutes in the fresh air:) https://t.co/0p0YQ0elJL
A3: Try to build in time during a mtg or PD that allows Ts to go outside of the typical agenda. Creativity can be relaxing
...OR...get together for exercise & wellness with colleagues!
A3 Long ago I took teachers to nearby bar for faculty meeting. Beer tap was labeled "agenda."
A3: We need to rethink the school schedule (i.e., limit # of AP classes a student can take, mandatory study hall, longer lunch)
Unfortunately and sadly yes.
A3-looking for someone to ignore stigma of massage and do 2 minute massage in schools. Huge in Europe https://t.co/bQJKkCkP2a
Brain breaks are essential in my classroom, especially today after a long weekend full of candy
A3: Music sets tone as Ss enter & if we need to chill, we ease into the day - a couple minutes of talking, trivia, sharing
A3: It may not be perfect balance, but leaders, remember to share and celebrate staff accomplishments and successes w/ everyone!
Building relationships is the key!
Sooo important.. We all need brain breaks.
Both great ideas for team-building and reducing stress.
Q4 Do you feel R & R leads to more creativity and innovation? Why / why not?
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR read this post about a man, a woman and a fly who had the COURAGE TO ACT -- https://t.co/uPrJZGJG0h

A4 There's science behind why creative ideas come when our minds are relaxed. wrote about this in
RT
Q4 Do you feel R & R leads to more creativity and innovation? Why / why not?
A4: Resounding YES! Tired minds produce tired ideas. https://t.co/rQ2zb3SnOi
Q4 Do you feel R & R leads to more creativity and innovation? Why / why not?
A3: Cultural celebrations may help provide a mental balance for all of the hard work and sacrifice by staffs & also reduce silos.

A4: I notice when I am rested and relaxed, I problem solve and collaborate w others much more effectively!
A4 Any way that one can create space to think, reflect, and be grateful = opportunity to create and construct occurs
A4 I think a healthy stress & relaxation can both lead 2 creativity. In the overwhelmed state, brains & creativity shut down.
A4: A tense brain will not innovate like a relaxed one. Must be open to new ideas, thoughts, changes
I think it speaks to our desire to make our profession stronger by having a hard time answering Q2
A4) It provides a fresh a perspective to tackle challenges. Just step away and come back. .

RT
Q4 Do you feel R & R leads to more creativity and innovation? Why / why not?
Q4 Physical & mental R&R is a must in order to recharge, refresh, recuperate; without adequate R&R decrease in performance
A4: My best ideas come to me at 5:15 am in the shower - rested and ready to create.
A4-for sure, a tired/stressed brain is focused on survival and is reactive, a rested brain is proactive and creative
A4: I think it's why we struggle with change and best practice. No time to open up our minds. That hamster wheel won't spin itself.
Plus you should see the GIFs
Agreed...can more easily step back from emotions and be empathetic https://t.co/hL30FeMfFa
A4: I notice when I am rested and relaxed, I problem solve and collaborate w others much more effectively!

Mine come when I am driving or falling asleep. I often record them on my phone during these times.
A4) I have great ideas on the lawnmower. :-)
Q5 If you could give advice to others regarding R & R, what would it be?
A4 It gives my brain a chance to wander and dream, something I don't allow as much while working and packing every minute.
Ppl wo work excessively think they're working hard, but miss the working smart piece
RT Q5 If you could give advice to others regarding R & R, what would it be?
RT
Q5 If you could give advice to others regarding R & R, what would it be?
A5: I work too much to be qualified to give R and R advice. But I can say, I've never regretted a vacation
A5: Don't wait for it to happen or complain about it...make it happen!! https://t.co/RGfq3H5VcW
Q5 If you could give advice to others regarding R & R, what would it be?
A5: I would give others (and my younger self) this advice..."It's going to be OK, take a break and relax- and do not worry so much"
A5: Whenever possible and when appropriate: NAP!
A5 Find things you really enjoy and your more likely to do them. For me it is now golf and pickleball.
A4 It goes back to what said about healthy energy. When we have positive vibes going our creativity intensifies.
A5
1) Live a balanced life.
2) Surround yourself with amazing people.
3) Have fun!
4) Work hard / play hard.
A5 Include time for R & R in your calendar just like you do for meetings, appointments, etc...
A5 You'll rarely if ever read an epitaph that says more time should have been spent at work. Life. Is. Short.
A5 there are times when you have to say no and not feel guilty about it
Nothing like being in nature to relax and refresh
A5 Don't look at your fitbit sleep patterns. This causes more stress since I don't get enough sleep.
A5) Find time for R & R. Make time for R & R. We need you fully charged and ready for a challenge.

Q5: your work will be there tomorrow. Unless it's report card time, let it be and take a break!!
A5 Listen to those who love you...they know when you need to slow your roll:)
A5: Plan it and follow through! Only cancel in case of emergency or you may be the next emergency!
A5: use your summer well: teaching is seasonal shift work. Crab fishermen ain't got nothin on us!
You're greatest self comes when you're aware of everything around you. You cannot be you're best self without R & R and reflection.
A5: Breathe deeply and always remember in times of stress that "This too shall pass."
A5-mindfulness-being aware of my breathing and muscles makes me slow down & take needed breaks throughout the day. Stay regulated
A5: You're not so important that learning won't happen in your absence. I suck at taking my own adivice - just sayin'
My PLN are the best advice givers! Check out all of the A5 ideas!
Ha! I mean I look for EdCamps in other states, for goodness sake - crazy or energizing? For me it works!
A5: Fulfillment is much more important than accomplishment
A5 Enjoy and live in the moment with those you love and care about.
ha! https://t.co/H7iDF4sRYP
A5: You're not so important that learning won't happen in your absence. I suck at taking my own adivice - just sayin'
A5 You can only max out a strong work ethic to accomplish great things if its coupled with a strong rest ethic!
A5: Be mindful of physical and emotional wellness. Establish limits to your work in order to have time for wellness.
- I've come to terms with the fact that my "hobby" is reading Ed related books. That IS my R&R.
Took my wife on mid-semester vacations twice and nobody missed me! And we had a great time in both cases.
So true! Soooo many of my lovely colleagues have control issues... let it go wonderful folk!
A5-enjoy your family and friends and take s money, really people it's easy and fun!!
A5 No, you are not loosing out or falling behind if you are resting when others are not!
A5: This is morbid so I apologize in advance. No one will write, "I just wished I had worked more on their tombstone!"
Relaxation= “the release of tension, a return to equilibrium.”
Love this wikipedia definition!
I am in the same club. I like reading writing and talking about Education. It's who I am.
I can learn from this for sure
A5) Stepping away to re-fuel for PD can be energizing. We often have to insist when teachers resist https://t.co/y7Z9C79ipu

Yes, they know when I'm burning out before I do. :)
Play with your kids, nieces or nephews. Puts everything into perspective.
Q6 What has happened in the past if you have not taken the appropriate R & R?

A6: Relationships break down
RT Q6 What has happened in the past if you have not taken the appropriate R & R?
A6 I ended up in the hospital last year (my 1st year as a principal) from ignoring my health & myself.
Take mental & emotional vacations; get away from negative thinking, negative emotions, stress, or overwhelming situations.
A6) When I was teaching I would teach summer school. I would hit a wall in October. I needed that time off.
Don't put yourself in the hospital.
https://t.co/4OOVGsJcDV
A6 I ended up in the hospital last year (my 1st year as a principal) from ignoring my health & myself.
A6: When I slow down long enough to look at my family, I realize what is important and rediscover a semblance of balance.
A6 Stress, illness, anger, bad teaching, bad relationships.
A6: I get grumpy with students and peers if I don't step back on in a while.
