#aussieED Archive
#aussieED was founded on the belief that all teachers, and students, should have unlimited access to Professional Development, on their own terms, to improve their teaching, their schools and change the lives of the students they encounter. Since then, we have embarked on a mission to reach educators, not only in Australia but, all around the globe. We want to smash the barriers that prevent teachers from easily connecting and learning with each other. To that end, we have developed a regular Ed-chat each Sunday on twitter at #aussieED. The chat allows all teachers, leaders, administrators and all those connected with education to meet on an unbiased platform and discuss the real issues that effect what happens in classrooms everywhere. Our chats are authentic because we are real teachers walking the same walk that so many do everyday.

A1. I make goals & strangely end up in a different, better place. "Life is what happens while you're busy making other plans"
A1. If you aim for nothing, that's what you'll achieve right? Recently been setting goals for my faculty. https://t.co/PLgG5jsQ9R
Hi Bern from Melbourne - enjoying holidays
A1 I've had a great relationship will goal SETTING my goal achieving needs work
Anne-Marie from Brisbane, looking forward to another session!
Haha! So often true https://t.co/I9o7Qktsjq
A1. I make goals & strangely end up in a different, better place. "Life is what happens while you're busy making other plans"
A1 - I often make goals & take too long to achieve them. Unless someone gives me a deadline...
I have an OK relationship. I find it needs to really engage me to follow it through
A1: I like the idea of goals more than the reality. At times I feel like I should write my goals post accomplishment! Is that ok?
Hi all! Heather here from Wollongong. Spending the first week relaxing, then gearing up for next term
A1- I facilitate goal setting with my team using Growth Coaching strategies. Also have my own personal coach/ mentor.
Hi - Ang from Manchester UK - a bit late this morning!
Used to have heaps of shallow goals but now only have 1-2 deep and important goals.
A1: Myself, I don't write a lot of things down. Ss, extensive work on goal setting in the classroom. Challenging area.
A1. Also been working as a head teacher to help my staff set their own goals in accord with their strengths, interests & passions
A1 on a personal level when I was doing challenge walks target was to complete walk within time limit
A1: I think it depends, if they are goals you have set yourself I usually achieve, its when others set goals for me that i struggle
A1: healthy, structured and somewhat linear.
A1. I end up making goals and reaching them in a way that is the exact opposite of what I thought. https://t.co/Se7c4UOtjF
A1 I've always been a list maker.... I tend to add things to the list if they weren't there and I did them.
A1 : Have to be different to what you do already. If you do the same things you have always done, you'll get the same result.
A1 Its complicated, the more i achieve the more i raise teh stakes do more try harder push further - its the seeking
A1: I've found that the goals we have to formally set get forgotten, while the ones we set ourselves are exceeded
Awesome and you probably learnt more the unexpected way, I know I do. A1
A1 This year been very much driven by School Improvement Plan - whole sch targets analysed for impact and my role within that
A1 cont...also am participating as a mentor in the PEN ASPIREAlliance project very satisfying project
Love this graphic. I read recently you should always be looking forward to something great the next day. https://t.co/ddihbVsoA0
A1) I'm pretty goal orientated. I tend to set and then work towards them. I am also obsessive about lists
A1 an evolving relationship
A1: I also work closely on school alignment from strategic plan to classroom practice through shared goals and vision
like the teacher welfare in there an important part of the profession that often gets left of the list or ignored
A1: I feel at times we set goals to please others. So they can measure what we do/don’t do. That’s not the point!
So true, Heather, goals I'm passionate about rarely have to focused and motivated to achieve IMO.
Me too! I always put a couple of things that I have already done to motivate myself
A1: setting and achieving goals happens daily but developing SMART goals is crucial
A1 I try & exceed them, smash them, crash them, beat them but it seems to cost more energy time love the older i get
A1: at work right them down, cross them out when achieved.
Question 2 will be up in a minute!
A1 Large part of my role has been creating an environment where staff can achieve their goals.
Kia ora everyone, a wee bit late - Emma from Newcastle
Absolutely! I believe that is Einstein's definition of insanity? =) https://t.co/6BErZCL32X
A1 : Have to be different to what you do already. If you do the same things you have always done, you'll get the same result.
Question 2 will be up in a minute!
It is pretty hard to achieve any of the rest of that without looking after the staff who make it happen!
Yes need to realistic but challenging otherwise no real satisfaction IMO. A1
I do better focusing on one main thing at a time.
A1 My relationships with setting and reaching goals is
So true! https://t.co/PYWl5JWnqg
A1: I've found that the goals we have to formally set get forgotten, while the ones we set ourselves are exceeded
A1. as a snr HR teacher, we need to mentor our Ss through their goal setting journey each term
I need a goal to set goals, I think.
Hello Ines here from Germany. Sorry, I'm late
A1 hit, miss, oh... I never expected that!
That's interesting! We'll be talking a bit about "professional" goals and those for Ss. I wonder why that is?
Likewise,am finding this to be so true with our digital transformation at my school.
A1 i think by taking on too much i spread myself to thin till the goals just whiz by sleeplessly and i up them again
does the rate of change we face make the need for goals less relevant. No idea what tomorrow looks like. Next year?
True and need to have at least most of the core resources at hand.
Yeah, that's probably a better way of explaining how I set goals too... https://t.co/Q89dHZNjHI
I need a goal to set goals, I think.
A1 Agree sometimes we just need to go with the flow because fighting the current at times doesn’t work
Great approach! Something I'm trying to do of late. Takes really honing in on what's important to you. https://t.co/uf5Q2WVJjH
Used to have heaps of shallow goals but now only have 1-2 deep and important goals.
Hi all, Steve from Brisbane here. First week marking and reporting, second week prepping for term three :(
a2 Keep the goals simple & meaningful
A1 I have had a very intermittent relationship so far, start with great intentions then life gets a bit fluffy
A2: it helps to break them down into manageable pieces. Then when they achieve each piece can reflect on journey they have taken
A2) I get Ss to set 3 goals. 1 short term, 1 for year and 1 not school based.
Do we really have to set the goals we're most passionate about or they just come to us naturally?
in my job without lists there is no chance of success
Ahh, teachers get too many holidays don't they? ;)
A2. Focusing on an inspiring endpoint helps sts work out the intermediate goals required to get there https://t.co/EOMc8zAHKK
A1 the worst goals are the ones you have already achieved the best ones are impossible but most challenging, fun, to
A2. I refuse to let them walk in the room until they tell me what their learning goal is for the lesson. They create them, not me.
A2: My students tend to be super vague when setting goals. We sit and chat about the specifics of HOW to achieve them
I like to say " 1 app at a time, Ellen. 1 app at a time."
"Fluffy"! Great word for it. That's where I've mostly been with setting goals as well!
Ss have goals is so crucial - again with them being SMART. Helping them achieve in increments.
Thanks Rob. Focus on the goals that will have the biggest impact on the most people including ourselves.
I just stress if i don't have lists
we meet with each S individually twice a term to discuss their SMART goes & how they are working towards them
A2: our home group Ts work with Ss to create SMART goals and check in with them every couple of weeks to monitor progress
That's a good point. I am probably not even aware of so many of the goals I'm setting myself
A2 2 week t&l cycle. Focused, sharp, negotiated goals. Feedback only references goals. Ss collect evidence of mastery
A2 Within a lesson can use three tier challenge style obj then train chn to choose appropriate challenge - training to set goals.
I just find opportunity seems to present itself when I'm busy doing other stuff. And you can't ignore opportunity.
Yes likewise, some apps favs 4eva, some don't last a week!
A2 Where do you want to be, what do you want to achieve, work back from there - baby steps!
A2. Share your goals with your Ss - let them know how you are progressing in the hopes of modelling best practice
Use a review and response model with ss: analyse their own data, set their own target be timely in review https://t.co/MXmrtpQMSx
A1 Key to setting goals is to set 1 or 2 goals you believe in... SMART for accountability, but personally aim for stars
Creating learning intentions every lesson so they understand what the is for the lesson and what they are trying to achieve
A2 Strong focus on teaching Ss to self-manage, collaborate, communicate, think & research. Focus on the goals that are important.
A2 - Using scaffolds to start with, such as SMARTA
A2 Find out their priorities and passions and work back from this! plan backwards for success LOL
A1 on a personal level when I was doing challenge walks Target was to complete walk within time limit
A2 : Are primary children really capable of setting their own learning goals or should it be us, the professionals that set them?
A2: I don’t know if I ask Ss to set specific goals. I do ask them to challenge themselves and to do their best. Challenge is good!
A2 Need to encourage Ss to look back and see successes and their journey - can then see value of goal-setting.
A2: have kids own the goal: WHY then how then what
This is a really interesting question... What do we think? https://t.co/cfS3VDYyL8
A2 : Are primary children really capable of setting their own learning goals or should it be us, the professionals that set them?
A2 make the goal visible write it down, read it out, carry it around with you, own it
Love this. It's true, sts are more willing to take risks when they realise you're doing the same https://t.co/Rmwf3lAbf0
A2. Share your goals with your Ss - let them know how you are progressing in the hopes of modelling best practice
Setting st. goals alongside them, but how to make them take ownership
is getting Sts to challenge themselves
A2 We use SMART goals.. I like the concept of them but feel they get a bit wordy/lengthy especially when Ss have 3+
Great q Bryn also can young children understand how to assess their success or otherwise? Does it matter?
I believe in S having a goal and constant feedback. Ss need direction and we need to hear what they want to achieve
A2 The answer is always a vid. I get students to speak their goals into my webcam. Then I play them back when they're slacking.
told one of mine my goal was City 2 Surf... not anymore due to bung knees :(
thinking! https://t.co/R0yxGXMX0k
i quite like settinggoals that are pretty damn well impossible as they are more spectacular to fail i learn more
A2) I'm trying an assignment list this fall to allow my Ss to work at their own pace. Hoping it helps meet individual needs.
A2- goals are just words if not revisited, examined, adjusted
Nice Joel, evidence is king and queen! A2
My problem too :) https://t.co/2sZ8XQr6ef
A1 I've had a great relationship will goal SETTING my goal achieving needs work
Depends on child I reckon Bryn, I have some that can but others that can't and need a little guidance
That's the right way to show Ss how to set own goals. https://t.co/pgoMM1eID2
A2 Strong focus on teaching Ss to self-manage, collaborate, communicate, think & research. Focus on the goals that are important.
Yes they are. If they reference success criteria in ss friendly language.
And they will often be the first to jump in and help you with them :) https://t.co/PwLmagfa0r
A2. Share your goals with your Ss - let them know how you are progressing in the hopes of modelling best practice
It's always great for Ss to see that we're still learning. Especially good for them to see that we make mistakes too
and it LI are conceptual in nature (not product specific) then students can set goals at differing levels.
have wondered about this for a while. Not really come to a firm conclusion so would be interested in thoughts
Key point, the goals and process must not be confusing for the students.
A2 thinking of having Ss tweet their goals, learning or otherwise, as a way 2 mk connections that might help them achieve goals
That's real life application of how to writing:)
a2 we also do one word goals in Jan
Like the vid goals sounds like it keeps Ss accountable. Would be nice to play them back at end of year too
I think it's helpful for us too. The longer I teach, the easier it is to forget the struggle to understand
Depends on goal-obj set by us-over-arching goal cd be clearer h'writing, more ind work etc
Question 3 will be up in a minute!
Question 3 will be up in a minute!
IMO students of a young age can reflect but not really analyse?
I find once you've gone through the SMART process, you then need to condense into a sentence. "I will do X by Y".
Karen -Sydney Planning to spend the next weeks training skipping teams going to Sweden @ beg of next term 4 World Championships
I think they absolutely are with guidance and structures for consistent feedback
A2 build relationship, learning rigor, know where Ss are at so they can progress, more reflection.
I think they're very creative in finding their goals. They need a lot of support but no one 2 do their work 4 them.
Love that idea Kelly. The more human you are the closer you get with Ss
I like that. Always try to share model my growth for them.
Q3 What challenges must you overcome to better achieve your personal, professional and learning goals? https://t.co/jpWv0SA2XY
A2- goals require a little 'stretch' to zone of proximal development
I think yes! Important to teach goal setting skills though. Hey every toddler had a goal to walk right? https://t.co/BncfHKCQy0
This is a really interesting question... What do we think? https://t.co/cfS3VDYyL8
A2 : Are primary children really capable of setting their own learning goals or should it be us, the professionals that set them?
Such an important point to remind Ss of!! They often expect things to go smoothly give up when it doesn't https://t.co/T6d7fqAfrx
They pick their game up just knowing that the vid exists. Just saying "remember that vid u made?" gets them on track.
A2: I think having Ss reflect on their learning is very important. If they haven't established goals, what do they reflect on?
take a picture of them with their goal & post to any social media w/a class hashtag
Nice, key then is to slowly remove scaffolding dependent on student readiness.
...yes...I'm looking at seesaw app for sts. to document learning journey
A3 time management without a doubt
they need modeling, support & structure to move from "be better at spelling" to a SMART goal
A2 As a teacher essential q is: How will this help my students?
That's a very different approach to all of the adults sitting around without them and deciding what they need
A3: The challenge of fear. Of getting it wrong. At times ‘I don’t know’ is the toughest line to deliver. Shouldn’t be, though!
A2 my Ss use our learng intentions/success criteria 2 set goals. they wear these lanyards with HUGE pride https://t.co/g7WtGE1qyW
A3 risk take at every opportunity
A3 : Apathy. Difficulty. Time.
accountability to oneself - most important kind
Nice Tray, students need to understand the difference between goals and targets too.
A3 Need to ensure that goals set have a real impact - ensuring this is the key challenge IMO
A3. I think the single biggest challenge is failing to prioritise & just keeping busy. Must make choices. https://t.co/GkPx4LoeWE
A3 time, fear of failing, cost, competing demands,
Yes as they are not experts in the curriculum like we are.
A2 tough for me as I teach progs in a museum. Being clear to Ss about what they can expect in the prog, what they will learn
A2: we talk about what we are grateful for before goal setting and then try to envision how we could contribute back
that's right, and goals can also come out of how complex their transfer of knowledge would then be
A3 I think finding time to work on yourself professionally sometimes gets lost in the workload + focussing on the students goals
A3 Also not being selfish enough to put in the necessary time and effort. Success= sacrifice
A3 Also not being selfish enough to put in the necessary time and effort. Success= sacrifice
A? yeah that's NOT gonna work no input, no freedom, no responsibility, not how we run business politics world, mayb
A3: We set formal PD goals but they're crazy rigid about how you prove you're reached them. Must be done through class observation
A3 I often set goals and let them fall by the side. I've found the biggest changes I've made have been decisions in the moment
I agree but they can become experts in terms of their own awareness.
I guess it's all our jobs! Great mindset!
A3 Focus and be patient - don't treat long term goals as short term ones! 17% battery! 1.3 % per question
A3 Prioritising is important, figuring out what to do next. Been doing lots of reading these holidays to develop this skill.
A3. Late to the conversation but my biggest challenge at school as in life is TIME - there is never enough of it.
can bvery much relate to that!
always a pleasure Ellen :-)
I love those resources!! Hope you don't mind me sharing them with our staff?
A3 - Understand that failures & hardships are part of the package
I think they could definitely set goals around learning behaviours
A2 I work with adult learners & they already have a career pathway in mind so I guide/facilitate & listen
A3. Time, time and time... If I had more time my life would be so different... but I don't so just have work around them!
Hi,
Tam from North QLD. I plan to rest, reflect and spend much needed time with family & friends.
A3 ensuring goals are meaningful and challenging
A3: keep focusing, time management, strict workflow
The more goal is theirs and in their language, the more likely success.
A3 challenge of setting a stretch goal, takes me out of comfort zone, may not be achieved straightaway, learning that that's ok 2
A3 Finding the time it needs to do Phd while still teaching
A3 Set boundaries so you can have a life & career
A3b Another challenge for me has been around setting too many goals. I'm now focusing in on a couple to make real change
A3: Time. Setting goals takes time. At times the learning of others takes precedent over mine. Why? “I think I can” though!
the ability to be organised. I need to get things on paper. So many thoughts if it's not on paper it's not clear
Same here and these are easily measureable and more likely to build momentum.
that's me too Rob... but slowly learning to be more selective in where I put my energy
What sort of chatting do you need less of?
A3) You have to overcome the fear of failure, embarrasment and thinking about what others might think
A3) I've bought lots of PD books with intent to grow. I need to do better at protecting my time to read them.
A3. Time, realism and the fact that one goal can be quickly replaced by another. The world moves quickly https://t.co/WNZEs4kvtT
Q3 What challenges must you overcome to better achieve your personal, professional and learning goals? https://t.co/jpWv0SA2XY
Great point Marc, often we sacrifice too much for too little IMO at times.
oh thank goodness it's not just me :)
A3: I tend to set myself too many goals. Getting better at accepting I can't do everything at once, but focus on doing 1 or 2 well
A3 - Motivation can be difficult for me to find...
That's definitely going to help according to "the research" that a lot of blog posts reference
A3 : It's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day
A2: give specific feedback and show lots of examples of what is expected too often we assume students know where they are heading
Question 4 will be up in a minute!
Question 4 will be up in a minute!
So good to have you on ! I shared your ideas around changing maths mindset language in our school newsletter!
Yep. First law of engagement: ownership is necessary for perseverance.
e.g. get to class on time, complete set task etc.
A3 Keep my passion for informal learning while coping with formal study
A3. I just got Wanderlust for my "ToDos" eventually when I get through that I will get to my "Wants" - maybe - one day : ).
It's hard to focus in just a few things when you have hundreds of students, several classes, maybe more than one job
ps Ss capable, nd app modeling, support, scaffolding etc. & this not age based but culture/exp based
teachers finding it difficult to do rigid assessment? Maybe there's something we can learn from this?
Time never seems enough but I've learnt that stuff somehow manages to get done
And belief in the outcome.
Cooking strawberry jam while enjoying 🍓 (its lunch time here) https://t.co/d7uQfwJthK
Please follow or for tonight’s questions.
tough, though, when they look to you to lead! Maybe its the feeling you should be getting it right?!
A1. As a teacher with my previous class & setting goals for myself professionally.
A3 knowing what to say no to....what not to choose....
could be based on the 6 facets of understanding, to 'show' transfer.
need to make mistakes. It's ok to fail!
I get the sense it's the human struggle =)
And would feed into knowledge/skills goals we set
Q4 Why do you choose the goals that you do? How can we know we are setting goals that are right for us? https://t.co/Abl6XtWUaO
Nice James, one thing all Ts (or most) need to be stronger at!
A3 learn not to bite off more than I can chew, finish what I begin. Focus not helter skelter
The things that make life worth living... (me too!)
Failure is one thing I'm good at... all that matters is I learnt from it
sticky notes: most used resource on my computer
A3 Patience, organisation, small steps, self doubt & the continued desire to aim higher
A4 Need to analyse what's going on now, consider what will have real impact, set goals, analyse success. Must be part of cycle.
Knowing what you want makes the chase more worthwhile. I want to leave a legacy. https://t.co/beO5wcxqpM
Q4 Why do you choose the goals that you do? How can we know we are setting goals that are right for us? https://t.co/Abl6XtWUaO
Me in a nutshell https://t.co/U5iEjrgLuq
A3: I tend to set myself too many goals. Getting better at accepting I can't do everything at once, but focus on doing 1 or 2 well
Choose from the heart as much as from the head. Right goals- we don't think of quitting or changing.
That's tricky. We're given room to adjust ours as year goes on if we need.
Choose from the heart as much as from the head. Right goals- we don't think of quitting or changing. A4
Saying no is a tough one... when those doors open I love to charge in https://t.co/tDbJxIayun
A3 knowing what to say no to....what not to choose....
A3 for a personal goal I want to complete another 100 mile event Need physical fitness & mental attitude
A4 Max student impact Vs possibility of success matrix
A4 Picking goals for myself as an individual and life and for my career and profession - keeping it simple and achievable
A4. We can judge the suitability of our goals by how closely they align with our personal ikigai https://t.co/pbso9RpRqS
A4 : This is where accurate and honest assessment comes in of our children's abilities and our own.
A3 i think saying NO taking on LESS volunteering INfrequently, sleeping MORE, reading MORE walking MORE
being in mo.
I heared recently if u don't read a book at least 3 times it will have no impact. Do u have the time?
Crap timezones screwed me up again so missing :(
A2:show my SS a continuum for each unit of work & set success criteria for each lesson using must, should and could
A4 - Thinking about some recent goals I've set... It comes down to competitiveness. I want to win!
Passion helps us grow. I like that.
My goals r chosen re my ss needs, school direction&personal carreer goals\interests. I reflect on my weaknesses and work on them
A4. We know they are right when we don't want to give them up even if we can't explain why (aka my PhD)
A4: When goals are thrust upon us, they often feel forced. Measuring goals = measuring effectiveness. But is that reality?
A4 according to the needs you have at the moment you set them. That is why they often change with time Adapting is key
A3: Using this again.. How can we change our def of success from being the best IN the world, to being the best FOR the world?
A4) I think you have to trust your instinct. If you feel strongly enough to make it a goal you'll see it through
A4: Ss and Ts can head down the data road to set specific goals, but is the data telling you the right stuff? Dangerous.
Some Ts put goals about planning or leadership, but they must be observed in class to see if they're achieved them
A2. We would sit down & chat about their test data & identify areas where they could improve. Pretest for current content as well.
Nice even if if it's get against ourselves.
I did it My Way by the sounds of things.
A3: make time for it in my day to do it justice
Completely agree or else very hard in terms of stickability
A4 my current goals are based on career prospects. Always surfing job requirements
3M's greatest invention and that's a big call!
I think that's why book chats help me because I revisit text.
A4 match your goals to your values and make both real by your actions
A3 narrowing down my goals, knowing what matters most, knowing my ONE thing
A4 - Ongoing teaching goal: want to make science fun & engaging so Ss choose to continue in HS
A4: It has to be something you're passionate/excited about achieveing or it's too easy to avoid it
A4. I choose goals that are ultimately going to make me better as a teacher, learner and as a person. https://t.co/0uN3GdVNSC
Q4 Why do you choose the goals that you do? How can we know we are setting goals that are right for us? https://t.co/Abl6XtWUaO
A4 I chase my goals hard because I want them really badly. If u don't want to achieve them, why are u setting them?
A3 - greater belief in myself
A3 yes there is always another day
A4: Unconsciously you have worked for your goals and then, later, recognise them. The same way you know if they're right's
A4 age, stage and experience and when you look at them and think blimey mate thats a bit ambitious - can you really?
Nice Ange, hard process but ultimately a big time and resource saver! A3
A4: interest, growth and learning. I don't sweat too much on whether it's right or not. https://t.co/UInOXMwk7u
Q4 Why do you choose the goals that you do? How can we know we are setting goals that are right for us? https://t.co/Abl6XtWUaO
A4. Good and timely feedback to students informs good goal making for informed improvement.
I never want to go through life and think, "I could've eaten that."
A3: Must overcome a fixed mindset, at times...maintain a 'can do' attitude, openness to change.
If I don't really _really_ want them, I'll rarely follow through
I love a bit of competition. I'm so much more likely to go after something if I'm in a race with somebody else.
Nice Anne-Marie I agree, if we're into it, it's right for us! A4
Always my struggle in the next great MOOC coming up
A4 when we bet the sun, risk the earth and pushing safety to the side with chutzpah commit to be teh best we can be
A4: I guess we know our goals are right for us when they keep us motivated and moving toward achieving them. Commit to the prize.
A3. My greatest one is fear. I feel confident with my knowledge but need more confidence when speaking in front of a crowd.
Kind of like some goals I set for myself!
Good morning to all! Joining late. Chris here from Ontario, Canada.
Agree - big challenge but come too far to ever want to give it up https://t.co/R4PHKMKjdG
A4. We know they are right when we don't want to give them up even if we can't explain why (aka my PhD)
it's important to project your values with colleagues.
this is great George. I have never thought about it this way. When setting and achieving a goal, I act this way
Question 5 will be up in a minute!
Great honesty Tam, little by little and regularity helps IMO.
Me too. And people look at me strangely as if to say I should be used to that because I teach...
Ts that post images of yourself on Twitter/YouTube: do you have reservations that Ss may find you?
A4: I ask: am I setting goals that that are backward looking - 'problem solving' or are they forward looking - 'future making'?
Oooh that would keep you focussed.
A4: your goals are right for you if both, heart and head, are saying they're good, positive, a progress.
Also, how do you deal with Ss finding you on Twitter? Block? Or do you promote it to them?
Does the head often get in the way of the heart. We don’t ‘know' its right, but know it feels right?
A4:choose something that challenges me and surround myself with inspiring colleagues, we all have our individual strengths
A4 choose on interest, where I know I can be better, to scare myself a little, to stretch myself sideways https://t.co/8JI5sWZ7PX
Q4 Why do you choose the goals that you do? How can we know we are setting goals that are right for us? https://t.co/Abl6XtWUaO
What are you posting that you'd be ashamed for your students to see? It's all about digital citizenship.
Nice Eric, good point. We want to almost irritated by the lure of success.
A4 when we stare defeat in the face and dismay whispers hissingly, and we know we can fail spectacularly then GOAL 1
I started my Youtube channel on the exact premise that they would find it & use it for revision https://t.co/G9K9hskXrF
A4 sometimes we have goals thrust upon us - so there are occasions where we don’t have control
I keep it professional, no more personal than I would be in the classroom. I don't follow back
A4) All my PD goals focus on me wanting to reach more individual Ss needs. This seems to be bigger hurdle each year.
Can't express it in a shorter way. Perfect! https://t.co/q5ddWN4ASg
A4 match your goals to your values and make both real by your actions
same here. I watched myself present...compelling viewing (not)...room for improvement
Yes! Not everything that is right on paper is good for your heart and values. https://t.co/h0p6MF1kN1
A4: your goals are right for you if both, heart and head, are saying they're good, positive, a progress.
Very NICE! Often we should think less and feel more, can't look back with regret IMO.
A4 I ask 'what will make me a better version of myself- sometimes it's T self, sometimes wife, parent, daughter, sibling self?'
A5) Keep informed, project manage, plan your time and resources
Change the mindset we have when approaching them. Love your goals like you're already reaping the rewards. https://t.co/Zx04EPJZ1e
A4: I ask - am I setting goals that are backward looking - 'problem solving' or are they forward looking - 'future making'?
A5 Be realistic - only set goals which will have impact, don't jump on every bandwagon, review regularly
A5: don't be afraid to fail/make mistakes. Stay focused and driven and allow others to join you on your journey
I choose goals that put me in the ZPD. They won't be easy but they will challenge me to grow
A5: Stay connected with people who have similar goals. When you don't feel motivated, dive into your PLN and come out refreshed
A5 : By setting them carefully and making sure that we ask for help when we need it. Also be relentless
A5: Have your team keep you accountable. Share them and ask them to check how you are doing. And be honest!
A5 Patience and persisitance
A5 suspect it's focus: choose 1 goal & 1 dream
If you can setup their phone and your webcam and film both at the same time, even better. Then they have a copy.
A4 surrounding myself with inspirational PLN online in lack of not many colleagues that inspire
Share them, review progress often and be dedicated towards them in mind and action.
A5 Develop & work on good systems that can free you up to focus on the main game
A5. Break every goal into achievable chunks - don't write 'do PhD' - write 'read 2 papers today', 'read 1 article on surveys' etc.
A4 I want to push my own and others' boundaries & set goals that encompass that drive
A5. Believe in them. There's no point being passionate about a goal if you don't truly believe it. https://t.co/OiilukdDLX
There's a term I haven't heard in a while. Somethng I apply often but rarely consider for myself. Tho maybe I should
A4: My goals/student goals are set based upon identified learning needs. When achieveable/realistic we know they are 'just right'.
You're not alone, just got Google Trainer, hesitant setting up first course! LOL
Visualisation often shows us the path we need to take. Slow progress is better than no progress. https://t.co/Zx04EPJZ1e
A5 pace yourself for success in your goals or just be!
same!! I make myself apply to present conference papers. I worry I don't know anything amongst my peers
A4 Goals based around a person's strengths are usually most effective.
A5 - Setting smaller, more achievable goals. These could lead up to achieving your bigger goal
A5 goals are made achievable when they are stretch goals- can be achievable/sustainable/realistic in increments/small steps.
Do it with someone else to start with maybe...almost never as bad as we think!
A5. It's not everything, but it definitely helps having quantifiable targets so you can measure progress https://t.co/lxj5r3Dd8O
A5 Refer to answer to Q4. if you really want it, you are more likely to put in the effort to achieve it.
Emotion and how I ‘feel’ makes a big difference to what I want to achieve and what I think I can!
A3b OK just set yourself 3 goals One short term, one mid term one and long term & make them personal
There are probably 56 cameras in your classroom each day. If they want an image of you, they'll get one. Sorry.
A5. Give yourself the pleasure of small rewards for achieving set targets & take a step back to view your progress every so often
A5) Make sure our professional goals are achievable, manageable and authentic.
A5 When I'm doing well, I'm setting my big rocks for the day based on my medium-long term goals. That makes for the best growth!
Love this. Maybe we need to follow our heart more then!
Yes. How do you eat an elephant?
A bite at a time and keep the rest in the fridge
A5 PARE away doubt, CUT out procrastination, STOP up excuses - just bloody do it stop whining give it a go, bestshot
Can a goal set by a tchr who knows their abilities well not be relevant?
A5b I also try to make sure I get those 'big rocks', based on my goals, done in the mornings or they don't usually get done
Tune out everything else that gives us a reason to not achieve goals. Focus on the people who can help you achieve them
My Youtube channel is for my Ss to use. Twitter is kept professional - don't post anything I wouldn't want Ss to see
A5) My PLN has helped me tremendously stay on track with growth as educator. They plant seeds I never thought of before.
By formulating them together w co-workers.
cheers, will def look it up
I like that....chunking up your own challenges!
A5 keep yourself accountable Reflect the same way we expect ss to. Ensure goals resonate and reflect your needs or follow through
considered it during challenging times at uni when was writing well with complexity. You find it your work improves
They can but then there's not the same level of ownership by the student.
My Ss know I'm on Twitter, but they don't really have an interest in education related tweets (which is all I do here)
A5. I'm a believer in telling the world about it so you're accountable, although research says u shouldn't. Conflicted. Thoughts?
A5: believe in yourself, visualise your goals, be happy about small steps of success. Then you're motivated and persistent.
A5 : Think about what you need to do next, don't think too far ahead.
It is hard but we don't want to look back 've etc" etc. This is why I'm speaking at Edtech.
It is hard but we don't want to look back 've etc" etc. This is why I'm speaking at Edtech.
May not always meet the lofty goals but we can celebrate those small successes... Making a difference matters most
But then I'm not aware on the research. I always though ownership of goals was important but is it?
Nice and often can pair up with someone seeking the same or similar success.
But surely lots of your goals would be reached faster with internet access!!
A5: achievable and celebrate the successes you are more likely to be motivated to repeat the process
Fair enough. Would that realistically affect their chance of achieving it? Genuine Q
I think we do. Gut feeling is quite often more than just a feeling. Intuitive?
always good to start with the end in mind. Brings focus to the goal -
A4 but one can extend their "comfort zone” If you have completed a half marathon train to complete a full one
Question 6 will be up in a minute!
Question 6 will be up in a minute!
Small steps - one foot in front of the other. What comes next? https://t.co/njwKxVX7lx
A5 : Think about what you need to do next, don't think too far ahead.
Collaborative goals makes so much sense! You have people with you fighting the same fight! https://t.co/TYMUqXxZVf
By formulating them together w co-workers.
A5 Share your meaningful, achievable goals. Nothing like being asked how close you are to achieving your goals to motivate you
Flipping my classroom really opened this up to me. 700 videos later I've seen myself teach a lot!
Embrace your mistakes. Always think of Thomas Edison. We'd be in the dark if he had been afraid of failure.
I agree. More people to help keep you on track, share those ups and downs with https://t.co/pfE50WoNKA
A5. I'm a believer in telling the world about it so you're accountable, although research says u shouldn't. Conflicted. Thoughts?
Good on you. I presented with someone else at Edtech Wgtn GAFEsummit, now ready do Melbourne solo.
I'm saying no a bit more this year to focus on paid stuff
A5: consider why, how, what it doesn't need to be massive either. A goal could be to join once a month
You'll do great. Many of the audience will in awe of your bravery, remember this!
Just wondering because primary ch often want to please their tchr so that may be motivation enough?
A6 Twitter! Through this I can develop own understanding of pedagogy through discussion, hear about Teachmeets etc
ha ha ha. You are right! Close your email and "social media" accounts when you want to be productive that will do
A5 for me: fewer, focused goals. Start day with them, review at end of day. I need to micromanage myself https://t.co/cSxGQNZQOo
A6 : Twitter. Especially fantastic discussions like chat
In all seriousness a mirror! A6 Biggest resource is our belief!
A5 the trick is to surround yourself with positive practical people people who will tell me when I am full of it
A5 prioritise importance, collaborate, share goals w/ colleagues, staff learning goal wall
A6: Twitter, books and reading. Also like to have the occasional chat/argument when i get really passionate about something!
Is twitter a resource? I find setting goals in a diary and having them on paper helps - I'm a visual planner type of gal!
Has a great podcast about learning from ups and downs. It's called My Bad.
Stops it being overwhelming.
Q5 make sure u r passionate and interested in your goal. Then break down into easily attainable steps! https://t.co/602hbyuulD
A6 priortising time to pursue them, for me that means narrowing down to just having ONE! I get impatient though
one goal 4 me is to stop doing 🍓-jam at the same time as
A6) My stubborn persistence.
Best resource I've ever had and taken me to so many places and memories
and as someone has already said...be kind to ourselves
A6: greatest resource is the people around you.. Family, colleagues, friends.. Draw on their knowledge
A6: Twitter, professional yammer groups, colleagues, reading
A6 substantive conversation, research & heart
Various edtech conferences, I learn a lot when presenting!
A6 the obvious one is twitter
A6 Growth mindset, networks, Non-teacher spouse
A6. Finding colleagues who are willing to listen, no matter how crazy the thoughts that i produce are. https://t.co/brihzcZXW9
A5 allow enough time for the plan and have a realistic target date to put into action
Safety and strength in numbers! A6
Sorry, joining late! A2 Teaching students about SMART goals, & the diff btwn short & long term
Yes. Great way to get valuable advice.
A6 discussions with other in whatever way available (in person, online, on the phone...) and just writing when no one around
A6 Twitter has also made me more aware of some great ed books - so much more aware of the wider ed world, current research etc
A6 digital & people resources, time, collaboration!
and perhaps let them be stretch together w colleagues in teacher learning communities ?
A5: Maintain a growth mindset, create achievable goals, be reflective with periodic 'check-ins', be relentless and persistent.
I want to see pics of this jam.
A taste would be better but i'l live with a pic :)
A6. By far the most important resources are the people who surround us. Both our supporters & critics! https://t.co/V9ZnLc1F9Z
Q6. growing and learning from my peers is key. Twitter is great 4 connecting & learning 4 improvement https://t.co/ft8Pa7hD7x
A6 I use Trello to keep my life in order. It's sensational! Heaps of boards where I can move tasks around https://t.co/ob7NPBfbd6
I believe goals are just words. It's the action, scaffolding, differentiation and feedback that matters
LOL! My father's an accountant and so is my wife!
I start those conversations with ‘this might sound crazy, buuuuutttt’….
A6 - Twitter chats, being w/like-minded people, reading, attending PDs, talking w/other
A6 Meeting up with colleagues on similiar journeys
A6 SLEEP perchance to dream (to succeed) HOPE for a better world JOY in doing a good job PLAY like our kids do LOVE2

A5. I'm a believer in telling the world about it so you're accountable, although research says u shouldn't. Conflicted. Thoughts?
Position yourself so that the majority of what you do is in your strength zone.
a6 people irl and online. PLN are vital to my growth&sustained change in practice. Accessing experts&mentors is priceless
A6. My 'have a go' attitude I won't learn if I don't try & if I make a mistake then I try again & again - I'll get it right 1 day
But make sure they're constructive critics, not the Ts who will talk down anything new being tried
definitely, too many goal setting sessions/meetings are preoccupied with 'putting out fires' & in the box thinking
A6 most recently I gave my team an anonymous survey to complete re my leadership. Was inwardly quaking but pleasantly surprised
A6 More and more, it's working and collaborating with growth-mindsets and tve goal-setters and achievers!
you are welcome here any time just like all other s

A6 discussions with other in whatever way available (in person, online, on the phone...) and just writing when no one around
This is exactly what I try to instil in my children and students!
I know what you mean but respectfully disagree. My harshest critics have been the ones I've learned the most from
A6 Google Calendar has been massive for me!
A6: for workflow: for time management:
Also great if you can get your whole team using it
A6. Read books. Twitter. Internetz. Talk to people. Then take that stuff, blend it up with self-reflection & make something new.
I agree. Although positive conflict is a necessary, healthy and welcome part of the teaching profession in my opinion
Do u ever set goals that r 4 ur growth too. Sometimes we have to pave a road before others will travel it https://t.co/cvcrRszZFL
My goals r chosen re my ss needs, school direction&personal carreer goals\interests. I reflect on my weaknesses and work on them
Question 7 will be up in a minute!
Question 7 will be up in a minute!
For the jam I might actually do it one day :)

A6: Prayer, reflection, working out, running, sleep, good diet, meaningful conversations.

Hmm... I can see their point. Perhaps it's like a pregnancy... Don't announce till >12wks
Provided that I have the resilience+insight to recognise which parts of their opposition are valid & which are not.
Teachers in my school who most love it are the lowest grades. Parents watch the vids with the students and love it.
Jam talk is best talk. Thinking of making marmalade over the holidays

A6 I would have to say offline time helps me keep focused on goals and passions
Q7 If you can, please share one PERSONAL goal for the 2nd half of the year. How will you make it happen? https://t.co/hTCBqUC7fi
Oh, you're so balanced! (Want some!)
A6 personal and professional commitment, then space, time, support and trust to implement
It's hard to do in teaching. But find others that have complementary strengths.
A5. I don't wait for opportunities, I create them myself. Find my own PD relevant to my needs. Surround with inspiring educators.
Glad I woke up early here in Ontario to hop into weekly Twitter chat! Great conversation around Goals this morning!
Not to mention that I don't usually get to choose whether my critics decide to be constructive or not!
You sound like you might be an introvert as well!
I find sharing professional g with peers & leadership often leads to collaboration that helps achieve said goal
Oh this was in reference to my growth. I keep my goals in context, so effort isn't wasted and impact is maximised.
Found these people on Twitter & now get 2 dream & create with them. Then we take it back 2 our own schools https://t.co/Lh1IZDTalD
Nice to see you my friend. Promised I'd be more tuned in on Sundays. Hope you're having a great summer!
I had colleagues telling me "we all think you're crazy, but go nuts and let us know how it goes"
Agree and we need the ability to recognise these smaller but significant successes
That makes sense. Work with the team around you. Complement one another! I like that.
A6. Another great tool is a good Twalk - walking with someone you talk too U get fit and you get to talk through your challenges
