Love that you are brave enough to ask questions. I figured it out on my own because I was too whatever the right word is- to ask for help! I chat 3-4 times a week (not usually ever on a Friday or Saturday) on most of the ones mentioned. #formativechat is right now!
A1 Immediate feedback. Looking over the formative assessment then talking about the errors students made. Using questioning to guide discussion. This could also help with grouping for blended learning. #formativechat
A1 As a teacher make it a point to ask those lowest students questions and invite those students first.
Never rely on the known quantity of the smart kid who monopolizes answers causing Ss to think they don’t need to learn. #formativechat
#formativechat A1-When formative assessment data becomes instantaneous, it allows students to inform us immediately on their progress towards mastery, rather than waiting to get a paper back before getting that all important academic feedback.
A1: I like to see which students are responding more frequently/accurately so then I can focus to give others more opportunities/means to express themselves. #formativechat
A1 One of my favorite things about @goformative is the view responses. I like you can see quickly how students are doing and pull students as need to start a discussion about their work. This allows for personalized feedback or small group feedback. #formativechat

Hey Stephanie! It was so great seeing you last week :) I love the grouping idea along with the others! Formative data can be a great way to pair up students for discussion! #formativechat
A1: A way I have done this is with a word cloud. It shows all the responses and the most popular are large. Good way to discover class personality. One year 7th hr was a bunch of fighters. Even they were surprised. #formativechat#edmodolove
A1: I will often summarize trends I see in formative data and present to kids for discussion. Ex: Half of us aren’t sure what set of numbers to use when measuring with a protractor. What questions or advice do you have to share? #formativechat
A1: Data should be shared as quickly as possible for students to use. This can guide whole group discussions or even small group discussions. #formativechat
Great strategy for class discussions! Great way to create a learning environment where students feel comfortable sharing their insights! #formativechat
A1: I love love love @PearDeck because it allows such versatile ways to give answers. It gives ss who are quiet a voice without anyone knowing it is them. @Flipgrid is the same. The quiet ss get a chance to speak! sometimes I use a google form for data aspect. #formativechat
A1: Explain the data as part of the formative process to Ss, so that Ss understand that there is a goal to reach and formative is the means by which to meet it! #formativechat
A1. Having class discussusions about the formative data. What types of questions were asked? What subjects were the Ss not familiar with or confused? #formativechat
And it is a way for Ss responses to be seen, but have more confidence in sharing their answers, unless of course they are the ones that say " I wrote that one" #formativechat
A1: Ts can leverage S data by using the data for Ss to place themselves in groupings that show where they are and where they want to go as learners. If they are in the red, are they prepared to shoot for the green or yellow? What’s their level of comfort? #formativechat

A1 We should be looking at formative data with a close eye to take next steps and indentify trajectory and ongoing needs. If we are truely doing this, Greater Ss voice should be a natural product..... If we are hearing more from Ss awe are doing it right. #formativechat
That is great. I could avoid saying so many stupid things if I took to that advice. I do try to always hear what my students are communicating-even if they can’t say it with words #formativechat
A2: questions that allow Ss to critique the questions. Is there a better way I could have asked you this? What questions should I have asked? #MetacognitionRocks#formativechat
A2 Always look for relevance and ask students to relate the learning experience to their daily lives. Then always ask for reflection after the assignment or lesson is done. Collecting data is one good way to reflect. #formativechat
A2: You could ask Ss to look through data to find common mistakes/errors. Ask Ss to find other ways to solve problems/answer questions. Ask Ss to find problems most people got right and talk about why. #formativechat
A1 How about using formative data to pair students for discussion based on complementary strengths? The creative thinker with the knowledgeable yet concrete kid. The idealist with the realist. The two activists. The two quietly awesome kids.
#formativechat
A2: Questions that allow a followup in the discussion. "Why is this a more precise answer?", "How do we know that this is tue?", "Where can we find out more?" "What if we ___?" "How can we use this for something else?" #formativechat
A2: Best question I use is ‘what do you notice?’ In relation to a visual, a tool, an exemplar, etc. Low stakes for students. What kids notice (and don’t notice) is very informative for us. Time and time again it’s shown me never to assume what kids are noticing. #formativechat
A2: I love to ask Ss questions that are scaffolded and build on one another so that the Ss see how all the questions relate to the whole of the formative/lesson. #formativechat
#formativechat A2 - Ask questions that are relevant to the students and allow the students to be creative in the ways that they show their mastery of the question.
A2 TS Need to rise the critical thinking in the discussion based on the results of the formative.
-Find the Mistake
-connect it to the real world
-s created Challenge for other ss
-Would you rather?
-Which one does not belong
#formativechat
A2 Some guided questions
-What actions did this ss take?
-What might have happened if we tried __?
-What could they have done?
-What could they try to avoid next time?
-Are there similar things between these to examples?
#formativechat
relevance is so important, Ss need to understand WHY they are learning something and be able to connect it to what they know, their backgrounds, #formativechat
A2: Questions that allow a followup in the discussion. "Why is this a more precise answer?", "How do we know that this is tue?", "Where can we find out more?" "What if we ___?" "How can we use this for something else?" #formativechat
A2 Leading and or open ended questions shine a spotlight on both choice and creativity. They allow you to see different thinking, reasoning, and logic. We just have to make sure we are listening to understand. #formativechat
A2: Open ended questions are best in all subjects. Too often though that only happens in ELA & social studies. The best math/science challenges make finding the details part of the struggle students need to overcome #formativechat
A2: Open-ended, higher level thinking Qs that are relevant to Ss and to content, encourages boxless thinking while discussing! Validate Ss responses and facilitate deeper conversations! 😊 #formativechat
A2. Open-ended questions so that the Ss can give more information in there responses as to what I need to gather or seek! Some Ss may need a lead into the type of info seeking! #formativechat
A2 We can ask students to ask their questions! That engages them, reveals sources of curiosity and confusion, and leads to discussions based on their values. #formativechat
agreed, but it's also not reasonable to think you can quickly read and respond to each one. I love Multiple Choice so long as we recognize the limitations of MC. #formativechat
A2: Open ended questions are best in all subjects. Too often though that only happens in ELA & social studies. The best math/science challenges make finding the details part of the struggle students need to overcome #formativechat
I like the approach you take to this Q! It's important to discuss not only class content, but the learning process so that they are able to better understand it. #formativechat
A1: I try to give students a greater voice in the class discussions by letting them know that any formative assignment can be done countless times. The first lesson I do, I put this quote up and we talk about it and what it means in the classroom. #formativechat#growthmindset
Yes! "Forces" them to look at the information differently. Removest he plu and play answer and requires some investigation and deeper understanding. #formativechat
Awesome idea for leveraging the formative data you are collecting! Student ownership can start from any point in the formative assessment process! #formativechat
A1: Ts can leverage S data by using the data for Ss to place themselves in groupings that show where they are and where they want to go as learners. If they are in the red, are they prepared to shoot for the green or yellow? What’s their level of comfort? #formativechat
#formativechat a2 It's all too easy to ask questions in L1 so these stem sentences give power to ss working in or from their Language 2. Springboard or stem sentences empower
A2: questions that do not have a right or wrong answer but can make thinking visible. Also, questions that other ss have posed rather than predetermined questions from us. #formativechat
I like MC for an initial look at where a student stands, but then I like to pursue more open projects/challenges to force higher order critical thinking-also I find it to be more accessible for those struggling #formativechat
A2: I also love to have Ss come up with answers that make sense through textual support. I want them to think outside the box. In the 80’s in school, it was one answer and only that answer. I would always try to challenge the T, but was always told I was wrong. #formativechat
Love the inclusion of "plan" in the answer. While many discussions may be impromtu, you have to have some of the questions to gyide the discussion planned. Much like we do here. #formativechat
I would also include questions asking the learner what the next best step would be for them? and follow with some choices for expanding their learning on that topic. #formativechat
A3 You must make sure you hear from every student even your shy students. So try using online discussions too this will help meet the need of all students.
#formativechat

A3 During class discussions, students can offer nonjudgmental feedback by saying back what they heard a classmate say, asking questions about each other‘s contributions, and articulating common values. #formativechat
#formativechat A3 - I use "Math Talk" in my classroom. This poster hangs in my room all of the time to remind my Ss how to properly engage one another in discourse in the classroom.
https://t.co/ccIY3Nb78U
A3: I like the Socratic Smackdown Method because it has Ss come prepared to the discussion and discuss like questions with a circle of peers while others pull from the conversation to build on the next question. #formativechat
A3: Rule 1-respond positively to each other; Rule 2-don’t accept any first answer Rule 3-question your own responses Rule 4-assess any personal growth/changed ideas #formativechat
A3: We learn by talking, by exploring through conversation, the what ifs and whys, it gives students a chance to test ideas with one another and it gives Ts a sense of where to take learning for the Ss in front of them! 😊 👍 #formativechat
Q3: Our classroom discussion usually revolve around authentic student samples (math process) so it very much does both. They are assessing a peer and reflecting on their own work at the same time. I am often putting up work with a small detail mistake. #formativechat
A3: my lessons always begin with grp discussion. Students then assess whether they are ready to leave and work independently. If not, they stay and ‘give me a second chance to explain it better’. There’s no shame or judgement. Just kids owning their learning ❤️ #formativechat
A3 Create a process/system for Ss to listen and evaluate W/O responding until some journailing, critical thinking on the divergent or convergent ideas. Speed this process up to real time and watch for great Qs from Ss that draws out the learning from each other. #formativechat
Yes. I was an English teacher for 24 years and kept that in my mind daily. I never wanted a S of mine to feel like their voice did not matter because I was the only one that could be 100% right in the classroom daily. #formativechat
#formativechat a3 Using a rotating panel of ss judges to assess class discussion, means they are more actively leaning in to listen. Sharing that load means 99% participate
A3: I think it’s important to create routines and norms around reflection and feedback so that students learn HOW to do it. Needs to be explicit #formativechat
A3: I have not actually thought about using them for peer or self assessment. I guess that it could be part of their written reflections, but I tend to not discuss their reflections whole class. Those are more 1:1 for em. #formativechat
A3: I think it is important to start from the beginning of setting your class climate up in a way that Ss feel comfortable talking about data. Ts will have to explicitly teach how to do it and practice it. #formativechat
A3. As we are discussing the topics, giving Ss time to ask eack other questions for review with subject matter and discuss topics amongst themselves, allows for peer review and self review for assessments to bring questions and point forth! #formativechat
We love these three strategies! They are not only engaging, but also informative for the T! Ss can share observations/inferences and help you discover new things to inform your own instruction! #formativechat
A3: if Ss are able to earn points by demonstrating how they deepened their understanding and by helping others understand, they will put forth their best effort. #formativechat
A3 Using Socratic Seminar/Circles for discussing topics. Allows for multiple viewpoints and arguments to be challenged. Really makes Ss assess others and their own thinking. Adding the “hot seat” to the center makes Ss think on their toes. #formativechat
Thanks @goformative & @Rdene915 and all of you for the time learning together this evening, have a terrific Tuesday! #formativechat stay cool, the temperature’s rising! 😉
These are great follow up questions! They not only asks Ss to dive deeper into understanding the learning process, but also can help you plan meaningful modifications and learning extensions! #formativechat
Requiring a peer review as a criteria for an assignment is a good way to get them to offer constructive criticism. How might i use goformative for that? ideas anyone? #formativechat
I like showing them the questions that most of the students missed and have them talk about why or have them look at trends they notice... question 2, 4, 7 are most frequently missed- maybe we need.... #formativechat
As we wrap up #formativechat...thanks to everyone who participated! It's energizing to hear all the awesome strategies you all are using to fuel class discussions and give students greater voice!
I do that too! Also, if you are using something like @Goformative, you can hide the names so that they can talk without judging each other. They start to see each other as true learners — not someone that must be perfect always. #formativechat
I like showing them the questions that most of the students missed and have them talk about why or have them look at trends they notice... question 2, 4, 7 are most frequently missed- maybe we need.... #formativechat
A2: One of the simplest is ‘are you getting this’ or a specific question to that effect-also what is inspiring to you today and how can we connect it or what’s a problem we want to solve #formativechat
Thanks for joining in tonight, everyone! As always, this has been my favorite Twitter time of the week and I can't wait to continue digging into what everyone has shared! #formativechat#eduheroes
Agreed! #formativechat is the best "pick me up" for the beginning of the week! It’s not the same when I miss one chat week. Could this be an addiction? If so, it’s a good one. :) Have a great week. Stay cool. #formativechat
Agreed, it's also a great Q for students of different skill levels. It provides students with an entry point and thus gives them the opportunity to become engaged in discussion! #formativechat
Yes! Some Ts were afraid that Ss would not take the formative seriously without a grade, but actually Ss look at formatives as opportunities to see growth, figure out areas they are still struggling with, helps them ask?s #formativechat

I love that feature about @goformative - it allows such great discussion but provides privacy through the hiding names; it takes away the judgment and contributes to a collaborative mindset. #formativechat

A3: Providing opportunities for discussion where students can practice communication skills like in socratic seminars or philosophical chairs through use of @goformative can help students with peer and self-assessment. #formativechat
Ugh! I am in the U.S. for break and got my times all messed up and missed the #formativechat this week. Was still in my Brazilian time reference I guess. I will try again next week @Rdene915@davidwkwan and @goformative.
A2: questions that do not have a right or wrong answer but can make thinking visible. Also, questions that other ss have posed rather than predetermined questions from us. #formativechat
A2: I feel its important to level the questions (blooms taxonomy or costa's levels) depending on the point of the unit the ss are in. For ex, at the beginning of a unit it is better for a "knowledge level question" and at the end more "synthesis and application" #formativechat

A1- Let the discussion be the FA. Weave your questions into the discussion and let the Ss take it from there. Nothing says your FA (or your data) has to be physically collected. :) #formativechat
Thanks! I totally agree! Planning can include anticipating the responses you'll receive and planning for open-ended Qs to make sure participants are learning from them! #formativechat
A2- In math, I find the best questions to ask are the simple ones...Why? and/or How? If my Ss can answer me when I ask them these, I know they get it. #formativechat
I like the idea of 1-1 reflection. An idea that just sparked is one of the reflection questions being, "so what did you think of when ___ said ___?" or "what new Q's came up for you based on the class discussion?" #formativechat
