Hi! I'm Beatriz Maldonado, director of language acquisition @BerwynSouth100 Excited to be moderating the chat with my professional crush Dr @JoseMedinaJr89#d100chat
A1: Sociocultural competence is the ability to understand another culture through language, customs, and values. There is a positive exchange between different cultures and a willingness to learn about each other based on an additive mentality. #D100Chat
A1:#d100chat The goal is for Dual Language students to view the similarities and differences between the two languages for the purposes of comparison and learning.
A1: #d100chat#d100pride#bsdbiliteracy
Here's a dual language parent's "Hope and Dream" for her child, demonstrating sociocultural competence "...appreciation for both languages..."
A1 Socio cultural competence means more that knowing the words of a given language. It is being able to use these words to appropriately communicate while respecting the beliefs, rules and values of the given group you are communicating with. #d100chat
A1: Sociocultural competence is how you communicate based on the situation you are in...it's what you believe to be true about a person's culture, backgrounds, and traditions. #teampershing#d100chat
A1: It's about creating a culture and environment in your building where everyone sees themselves...in the books, the halls, on the bulletin boards, etc. Diversity is all around and it is the norm. #d100chat#teampershing
Hi everybody! Socio-Cultural Competence is a way of life based on what you believe, and living and working through life effectively with people from other cultures. #teampershing#d100chat
A1: Sociocultural Competence is understanding that other cultures are different than your own and respecting the differences in order to find positive ways to communicate. Communication is deeper than direct translation. #d100chat
A1: Sociocultural competency is having the capacity to express yourself in said language, with knowledge of cultural context, customs, norms, etc., of a given society. #D100chat@BeaMaldo310@JoseMedinaJr89
A1: To me, sociocultural competence means respecting other cultures, regardless of how different they are, and being able to interact and appreciate the differences and beauties in each #d100chat
Q1: To me, sociocultural competence is the ability to see our similarities and differences - but, seeing the differences as opportunities to connect rather than obstacles to overcome! #d100chat#duallanguagerocks
A1: sociocultural competence is being able to communicate with others while understanding and valuing the culture, language and social norms of all parties. #d100chat
A1: #d100chat Sociocultural competence is awareness of the many aspects that culture is and how we can cultivate that awareness through education using authentic examples and situations.

Q1 Be proud of who you are. Be proud of who other people are. Strive for equity for yourself and each other. Live side by side in this world, respecting and valuing each other, because we are #bettertogether. That's my take on it. #d100chat

A2: Sociocultural competence is pillar 3 because its the greatest part of speaking more than one language... you get to appreciate and learn new ways to look at the world...#d100chat
A2: It is 1 of the pillars to foster respect for the culture that again goes beyond translating. it helps elevate the status of the minority language #d100chat
A2: Sociocultural competence is a pillar of dual language because it is not enough to just be bilingual or billterate. One must also have a foundational understanding of a culture in order to truly understand and value it. #D100Chat
A1: Sociocultural competence is not only being able to communicate or teach in a certain language. It is the ability to connect with a culture, understand that culture, and become part of that culture. #d100chat
A.2 It is an important step in dual
language to link concepts to students' personal, cultural, or academic experience. It provides a foundation: bkgrd knowldg and respect.
#d100chat#teampershing
A2: Ss & Ts regularly interact w/one another; having an understanding of diff cultures & being able 2 participate in convos w/ people that r diff than u is necessary. Being aware and making sure you are accepting should be a norm in todays classrooms. #d100chat#teampershing
A2: it's a pillar because it is a foundation of education, and needs to work side by side with biliteracy. It cannot be expected to simply be a result of dual language programs, but just as important. It's how we help foster global citizenship! #d100chat
A2: As dual language educators, our goal has to be to enhance our students’ language and critical thinking skills they need to go out and become agents of change in our world. #d100chat

A2: Because students in dual language programs are learning how to connect their culture and langue with other cultures and languages rather than looking at it as a difference. #d100chat
A2: Our “social culture” has become global with the help of technology giving us the need and opportunity to cultivate mindful students in our dual language program who, in turn, share their knowledge with others that goes beyond the language and literacy. #d100chat
A2: It's one of the pillars b/c you can speak a language w/out knowing the culture of the people who use that language. It requires you to cultivate more than vocab! It requires intimate knowledge & appreciation for those immersed in that culture. #D100chat@JoseMedinaJr89
A2. Sociocultural competence is the pillar that helps the other pillars succeed. It is one thing to teach biliteracy and bilingualism, it is another thing to teach respect and culture. Everyone needs to feel welcome and respected. #d100chat
Q2: Sociocultural competence is a must in every DL program. If all stakeholders don’t engage in dialogue about #bias, #prejudice, #privilege, and how to become more inclusive, we don’t really have dual language programs. #d100chat#duallanguagerocks
A2: Dual language education is a holistic education. You are not just learning language, you are learning about culture as you learn the language. You cannot have one without the other. #d100chat
A2: As dual language educators, our goal has to be to enhance our students’ language and critical thinking skills they need to go out and become agents of change in our world. #d100chat
Q2 Our culture is who we are. If we achieve high standards and speak in two languages, but don't know who we are as a human, then we won't be fully utilizing the skills we possess. #d100chat
A.2 It is one of the pillars because in order for students to be truly dual they most accept and embrace both languages, culture and beliefs. One is not better than another, having both is stronger. #d100chat
A2: Because students in dual language programs are learning how to connect their culture and langue with other cultures and languages rather than looking at it as a difference. #d100chat

A2: One of the reasons I ❤️ the work of @RG1gal. The power of language: instead of ELL, it’s emergent bilinguals. Respecting language & culture, not deferring to the dominant, English speaking as an ideal, but valuing culture & language (esp in mathematics!) #d100chat
A3: sharing my own experiences , both good and bad, as a bilingual person, a 2nd Language Learner, a child of immigrant parents, and a success story of a Latina, woman! #d100chat#bilingual
A3: Sociocultural competence is embedded into all units throughout the school year. We celebrate our Latino cultures through learning about leaders such as Cesar Chavez, family celebrations such as Dia de los Muertos, and music through our own Mariachi! #D100Chat
A3: Creating lessons that students can view in both languages. For example, idioms in English would not make sense to an ELL however, finding Spanish idioms will showcase the concept of figurative language. #d100chat
A3: I speak Spanish & English when giving common directions. I will talk about Mexican foods/traditions that are similar to Amer. foods/trad. I acknowledge the beginning of Ramadan (today) so SS feel like I at least try to connect on these levels. #D100chat@JoseMedinaJr89
A3: VERY DELIBERATELY! Its not something u can just wing! It has to be all hands on deck;Ts & Ss; it's in the little things as well as the big; creating classroom expectations & procedures that include everyone & that Ss have ownership in is a good start. #d100chat#teampershing
Q3: Valuing students’ language(s) and culture, using multi-ethnic literature, aligning instructional practices to the language of instruction, and realizing that students are awesome from the moment they walk into our class! #d100chat#duallanguagerocks
A3: In our classroom we lean about cultures through holidays, important people, and "polite conversation" during breakfast and snack. Their exchanges during those times amaze me. #d100chat
A3: Making it a point 2 say NAMES correctly, making sure that we r not "dumbing down" but r "scaffolding up"; creating opportunities 4 r diverse Ss 2 participate in rigorous wk & not make excuses 4 Y they cant; break down the barriers that stand in Ss way! #d100chat#teampershing
A3: Sharing stories about people, athletes, authors, that mirror the Ss lives, situations, struggles. Listening to and honoring their own stories. #d100chat
A3: I connect with my students on a personal level, having a very similar upbringing than them, bilingual, bicultural daughter of immigrants who felt the pressure to fit in with the dominant culture and pushed back. We celebrate our languages and cultures everyday! #d100chat
A3: by being purposeful in interactions with students. In 5LN, the majority of our class are ELs. Allowing them to be themselves unabashedly lets them embrace their culture, and teach it to others, including the Ts! #d100chat
Q3: Valuing students’ language(s) and culture, using multi-ethnic literature, aligning instructional practices to the language of instruction, and realizing that students are awesome from the moment they walk into our class! #d100chat#duallanguagerocks
A1. Sociocultural competence is being able to understand and accept everyone for who the are and building from their experiences to enrich your own. #d100chat
A3: As a teacher it is important to foster cultural differences, and to facilitate our students with every opportunity to celebrate who they are. This is done through books, projects, book clubs, presentations, etc. #weallmatter#d100chat
A3: We learn about each other, our cultures and cultures around us through our curriculum. Our students voices need to be the foundation of our teaching. #d100chat
A4: There has been a real effort to fill classroom libraries with authentic texts with characters that look like our students. We also have a great multicultural fair, but it could be even better. #d100chat
A3: Komensky staff include families in Family Literacy nights that include the integration of English and Spanish literature into family conversations! #d100chat
A3: Making sure to include all Ss in our conversations and to educate ourselves and our Ss about practices we are unfamiliar with. I did a lot of Ramadan research today to better understand one of my Ss holidays! #teampershing#d100chat
A3: it’s more than just language... it’s also values. Recognizing that some cultures value community more than individual success. That can Bea shift (& a positive one) that you can bring to the classroom culture. #d100chat
Q3 Find books, images, and videos that have characters that are mirrors for our students, and windows into other peoples' lives/cultures. The texts we choose matter. #d100chat
A2. You cannot say you have a DL program without pillar 3. We must understand the cultures of the students whom this program was created in order to better serve them. #d100chat
Q3 Find books, images, and videos that have characters that are mirrors for our students, and windows into other peoples' lives/cultures. The texts we choose matter. #d100chat
A4: School wide efforts include regular grade level meetings and school meetings to collaborate about students, effect strategies, reflect on current practices, and learn.#D100chat
A4: At Komensky, we involve our families in everything we do! We host family events during the school day and evening to involve them in our instructional program and celebrate our cultures. @komenskymwhite
and @CCTejas lead the Latino Family Literacy Project! #D100Chat
A4: Pershing is going to begin a book study on CRT and we have started having discussions centered around our different understandings of what CULTURE means. We need to be aware of our own understandings in order to be DELIBERATE about the work. #d100chat#teampershing
We have month morning mtgs to learn from each other & build culture!
And...This is my next read! Admin's recent gift to staff! :)
#d100chat#teampershing
Q4: School has an #Equity & #SocialJustice Vertical Team? Documents available in the 2 or 3 most commonly used languages by families? Meetings in languages other than English or translation available? Front office staff welcoming and multilingual? #d100chat#duallanguagerocks
A4. Leading by example, always trying to embrace other cultures, growing my own dual language brain and being vulnerable. Always open to new ideas and ways to grow our dual language school! #hiawathapride#d100chat
A4: Pershing is going to begin a book study on CRT and we have started having discussions centered around our different understandings of what CULTURE means. We need to be aware of our own understandings in order to be DELIBERATE about the work. #d100chat#teampershing
A4: I see efforts in hiring of bilingual POC. @PiperSchool there are DDLM ofrendas at school. I would like to see staff training revolved around normalizing Spanish pronunciation of names. This matters & our teachers are up to the task. #D100chat@JoseMedinaJr89@BeaMaldo310
Respect is a critical first step. Competence won't lead to steps that create true equity and access if we don't face disrespect of the beliefs and cultures of each of our students and families.
Letting students know from day one that they are bilingual and working toward biliteracy is essential to creating an understanding that they are their to learn from each other. It is our jobs as educators to make this happen for ALL our DL students. #d100chat
Q4 A district-wide effort: A vertically aligned curriculum that is based on the Common Core AND the Common Core en Español. A curriculum that is created by teachers who put their students and their culture/identity first. #d100chat#d100pride
A4: At Pershing we are going to do a school-wide book study on Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain as well as supporting our teachers to become proficient in bridging the languages. #d100chat
@BerwynSouth100 is fortunate to have leaders who continually seek to grow and learn from one another. We are not all dual language experts, but we've made it a priority to provide the very best for our students. #d100pride#d100chat
A4. Leading by example, always trying to embrace other cultures, growing my own dual language brain and being vulnerable. Always open to new ideas and ways to grow our dual language school! #hiawathapride#d100chat
A.4 We are trying to make sure the monolingual and the dual classrooms are not separate. We try to have shared experiences for the whole grade level and we plan together. #wearebettertogether. #d100chat
Thank you @BeaMaldo310 for always pushing us to continue to learn and embrace our fears, you are appreciated more than you know. Thank you @JoseMedinaJr89 for always being a great resource and inspiration for everyone in #D100#d100chat
Discussions like these, are so important. I hope that we can have a more formal discussion about sociocultural competency as a district, in person! #D100Chat❤️

Our school does a great job with translations, office staff is bilingual and the usual fiesta during Hispanic Heritage month. Looking for ideas to move beyond this to ensure our Latino parents become a greater part of the school community. #d100chat

Looking at our students, our norms, and our instructional practices through that lens is so important. We also must use that lens to evaluate materials that may be using another language but not another lens. #d100chat

A4: Today the 2nd grade team at Pershing had the Multicultural Librarian from the Oak Park Library come and chat with the kids and bring in different artifacts to observe and discuss! I mean did you even know such a job existed? #d100chat#teampershing
For students, ensuring the whole child is considered during data meetings can mean the difference between fostering engagement and academic achievement, & being given a label because a student's bilingualism & ways of interacting w/ the world is simply misunderstood. #d100chat
