A1: Being aware of the need to have balance really helps me a lot. I have to set aside time for the deeper thinking & creativity that creation requires as opposed to passive consumption. #OrEdChat
A1: I am guilty of consumption on many levels. I have to set goals to make something creative in what I am doing. I let Ss observe the process and discuss. #OrEdChat
A1 One has to consume in order to create but balance is key. I often look at robotics and other tech that's out there with my Ss. We then look a bit at how these things were created in the first place. #oredchat
A1 Cont'd: We talk all of the time in class about consumption vs creation. Consuming is only part of the larger goal of creating something with the information we consume. #OrEdChat
A1: creating isn’t the difficult part; it’s the fear of putting that creation out into the world. So much easier to just consume. Trust is a big part of it. #OrEdChat
#OrEdChat A1: Just getting the hang of this, really. I want my kids to understand that tech is a tool for problem solving and creation, not just consumption. For me, I'm constantly creating, so it's easy to demo use-cases
A1: Not sure I have achieved balance, but we create weekly if not more frequently, and usually with tech. Personally, I have a NEED to create, so I find time Feed the Need. #OrEdChat
A1: I challenge my Ss to try new creation tools and am trying new ones all the time myself. Recently began digitally sketchnoting with @paper53 app. Love it! Here are some of my #sketchnotes from #shiftinEDU#oredchat
A2: My students are used to sharing their learning with Flipgrid, Screencastify and now WeVideo. We have just started digital portfolios with Sites. Ss are asking if they can re-record their previous video work. #oredchat
#OrEdChat A2: I will sometimes give my kids tools that are WAY above their pay grade. With an intriguing problem to solve, they'll dig into it and become tech experts in the process
A2: Ss create #BookSnaps using Google Slides or Drawings. Started Websites this year with Google Sites. Includes Blog page and Passion page where they teach ME about what they love through pics, vids, and text. #OrEdChat
A3: Thank you @Flipgrid, I had one of the mos shy individual in a workshop and now, she is such a wealth of information to herself, her teaching team and me. #OrEdChat
A3: After watching Ss @Flipgrid and other videos, Ss are seeking help from some of my more quiet learners. This is giving them confidence and voice. #oredchat
A3: we tried @NaNoWriMo this year since we now have 1:1 Chromebooks...seems like something most students would probably not do on their own. Not going to hit the word count, but about the journey of writing every day. Pride in that! #OrEdChat
A3: I had a student who was unwilling to work in class. Found out he loved music so I got him on Garage Band & gave him the opp to add his own music to all of his projects. He skyrocketed after that!! #OrEdChat
A3 During Mystery Skypes, etc. I've had shyer Ss, who wouldn't get up and ask a Q, relay me their questions thru text messages or Flipgrid and then I'll relay the Q on to the other class #oredchat
A3: One of my 4th graders persevered and finished reading a challenging book. He was so proud when he finished and wanted to buzz about the book. I made a video while he did the book buzz. He wanted me to share it with his class and email it to his dad. #oredchat
Hello #OrEdChat - Kristy here from CA :) Your chat is very inspiring and I like the topic/book you are using tonight: #InnovatorsMindset Thank you @hmarrs24 for hosting!
A3: Actually, using @PearDeck was liberating for my Ss. All answers projected on Smartboard were anonymous so they could answer freely. I knew who gave which answer, but I didn't tell class who had which answer. Freedom to answer was amazing. #OrEdChat
A3: Last week, I had a shy S say (in regards to Flipgrid) "At first I was shy, but then I wanted to comment on everyone's videos." How awesome is that? #OrEdChat
I left that up to the Ss. The default is set at just my school district. I teach HS, so I showed them the settings and gave permission to change it to public. #OrEdChat
A3b: Have a radio class that has some introverts in it. They record all kinds of "spots" and then came up with idea to make audiobooks for elementary teachers. That's S voice right there. #OrEdChat
#OrEdChat A4: thankful that our school District is actually quite open about tech tools. They were quite reactionary for a while, but they've since come around after listening to the teachers
I've been trying out weekly @Flipgrid topics and sharing with teachers and staff. It's slow going but they're catching on. I've been asking random students to participate and they love it. One asked that I share the link with her mom. 👍 #OrEdChat
A4: Changing mindsets is not an easy task! I think much of it has to do with respectfully communicating, then communicating some more! They don't know what they don't know. Show them don't just tell them. #OrEdChat
I have presented GoGuardian for both my district and others. I have had all levels of educators in my sessions. I stress that we aren't here to punish but to educate. So many learning opportunities when Ss make tech mistakes. Some Ss need more guidance than others.#oredchat
Technically, it is either in district or public. But, I am the only one with all the links, plus Google Classroom. So, nobody knows to look for the sites but my classes. #OrEdChat
A5: I really want to put the ball in their court and let them teach me and each other. They are more than willing to tell me there is an easier way to do something. #OrEdChat
A3: When we started using MineCraftEdu to build our CA Missions, some of the quiet, brainy, kids became rockstars because they already knew how to use MineCraft! Other kids had a new respect for them! #OrEdChat
#OrEdChat A5: I want to stop teaching tools and start giving opportunities that require tools. Let students choose them, learn them (with help). Allow the way I teach to frame tools as things that help, instead of ends, in and of themselves
A4: We also do "pilot" runs for new tech or "scary" tech in classrooms. If we have success, we move on from there. Baby step it. Our board pres is way pro EDU tech, so that helps. #oredchat
A5: Being as knowledgeable as I can be about internet safety & educational use. Also, started using Be Internet Awesome by Google this year https://t.co/jpJGnfoPaP#OrEdChat
