#2ndchat Archive
#2ndchat is a Twitter hashtag that can be used to chat, collaborate, and grow with other second grade educators from around the world. Every other week we will discuss a different topic. It's a great way to help grow your PLN (Professional/Personal Learning Network) and share ideas with others.

Vickie from Ontario Canada I teach grade 3 I will be in and out of the chat tonight.
A1: I choose A but it was B until 11 years ago when I had some cool hands on math training.
A1: I love teaching math! I had some incredible mentors when I started teaching that showed me the way - lucky!
Hi, Vickie! It's always good to have you join us!
A1: I love teaching Math - it has always been my favorite subject, even as a kid!
A1: I am getting more comfortable teaching math.
Hands on training is the key, I wish everyone was so lucky.
A1: number 1 for me love teaching math. Always looking for new ideas to make learning better!
It was not for me but I think I only learned the traditional algorithms w/ no conceptual understanding.I love it now!
A1 I love teaching math! Big fan of small instructional groups/workshop format.
I love the words more comfortable - everything takes time.
& WE were the ones that did the math. They put us back as the learner but it was so evident how it applied to our stdnts
Me too but always glad to learn more.
That's the key in learning how to do things - even as adults, we must return to being the learner.
Welcome, so glad you are joining us.
Me too! Where are you both?
Hi! So glad you are here!
I think we forget how it looks from that side. It was good to struggle but then also get it! :)
I had such a fragile understanding in math. I made A's but knew it would all fall apart if pushed.
Hi Mandy, love hearing all the ideas
A2: Not good at math as a S. Now want to show a variety of ways to problem solve.
A2: I am now a mathematician that loves to understand WHY it works- even more than how. I can get the how once I know why.
It is so powerful! We weren't taught there different ways.
It is so powerful! We weren't taught there were different ways.
We will hear a lot tonight!

Q2. I always did well, but didn't realize, until I was a teacher, that I had no real understanding
Love this, understanding is the key and I think often missed or was missed when I was learning math myself. https://t.co/qb3qqc7tUr
A2: I am now a mathematician that loves to understand WHY it works- even more than how. I can get the how once I know why.
I asked questions as a student and was told to just do it the way they said and it would work.
This is so interesting, I find myself wanting to go back to school and try math again.
For me growing up, math was just about memorization
YES! That was me! I love it now that I really understand it!
YEP! And doing it the one way you were shown!
A2: Teaching many different, good math programs have deepened my math understanding.
If you don't have understanding, you can't apply it to new situations. It lives in the one place you learned it.
Grew up overlooking Cayuga Lake!
I find myself feeling the same way, teaching was just different back then.
It catches up w/ you though as you get into the upper level math classes. You can't memorize your way in.
A3: I loved math in elementary school and shortly lost the love when in 5th gr I was moved from the high to next high group.
A3: Also, think when I hit the upper classes the visuals weren't easy accessible and I don't love to memorize and just do things.
I missed Question 3. Looking for it
A3: It wasn't until I had to teach mathematics and learned to understand what I was doing that I started to love it again.
A3: There was until I learned to love math myself from great math pd.
Katie from Rose Hill, KS jumping in.
A3: If I had been on twitter back then, I probably would have leaned on the PLN to learn more. I love math now.
Welcome , so glad you are jumping in Q4: coming up soon.
A3: The good news is now we can reach out to others and really learn how to make math rich and not just memorization.
Good point about reaching out to others to help.
Teachers on Twitter are so gracious to share things they know because they are passionate about it! I LOVE my PLN!
Diane Snieski from Bentonville Arkansas.. Little late but hi everyone!
Q3 I don't think I have ever received any good math PD. I just like the "necessity" of math, always have.
Our principal is arranging math training during Nov staff meeting - guided math
Welcome, so glad you are joining us, later is better than never!
I still like doing a problem in my head then checking my answer. As a kid used an adding machine with a roll of paper!
A4: I think making math interesting for students & sharing what you are doing with your parents via classroom twitter acct or blog
I live and live to teach math. CGI was the best PD training I've ever received
So glad you are here Diane! You are welcome anytime!
Q4: Praise students for thinking hard and working through times when they are stuck. Focus on the process, rather than the answer
A4: I love to provide positive math experiences for families through Family Math each week.
You encourage, value and share strategies from simplistic to complicated... All kids can do math! Just differently!
My math training came from MEC training math sessions. Changed my whole way to teach math.
A4: Family Math is a game they've learned in class to practice a concept and then they are the expert and teacher at home.
Saw something from another T - cut up 120 chart and have Ss tape it together as a number line to see relationship
cognitive Guided Instruction
Differently is the key word here, which just takes listening and observing on our part.
Never heard of it (or at least not in those terms) Thanks for sharing.
Yes, have seen that before. Number lines are supposed to be much better for primary.
same for me with CGI! Really put the whole process in perspective
Lots of misinformation about CCSS and math with parents, not sure how to to explain that all "new" math isn't bad
Q4: Be positive. Show the value of math. Don't show or voice frustrations over crazy math questions in math series
love to hear more about it!
A4: I also like to share photos/highlight different approaches for problems with parents so they can see different ways is ok.
it's a 3 year program but well worth the investment
Yes, that is why I love twitter so much. They can see and hear students thinking- powerful.
That's interesting, I've been teaching for a while - not so sure CCSS is so "new". but people's experiences make it new
would love to learn more! Link?
I'm trying small math groups again this year and excited to learn more. Small groups are better than whole group.
I keep telling my parents that this is not "new" math. In fact the strategies have been around a long time.
A4: Lots of fantastic Math mentor texts now.
This year, I am having a warm up and then 2 rotations of math centers. love my small groups
A5: I have a 15 minute number talk of some sort -sometimes I use the since they work so well. Then an hour for groups.
A5: I have an hour & it's framed or a work in progress w/ a mini- lesson, independent work w/ choices/guided math, & then sharing
I have the hardest time with noise levels
Love number talk discussions!
small groups are so insightful and can really get focus on student's needs right then.
A5: different. Some days 3 part math lesson, problem solving, etc. Depends on topic. Trying to integrate lots of math talk.
I saw that and am excited to see that thread after our .
Q5: I have a 30 minute whole group lesson and 45 minutes for small groups, 15 minutes for each group
WOW, that cool. I will have to check out the archive if they have one.
Q5: Number of the day share in the morning, whole group intro, now trying to work in small groups
I try to keep my whole group time short - number talks are perfect. :)
My whole building read this bk this summer and I found it very helpful, connections to literacy. Guided Math A Framework...
A5: I have 4 stations: teacher, math games, math journal, and a digital center on iPads (targeted skill).
I agree start with a number talk then unpack a word problem of different kinds daily independent work then share strategies
A5: I like to mix it up- number talk or number routine. This is a GREAT book for number routines. https://t.co/fFq89VEjiX
A6: I love Math Exchanges by for understanding and group work around problem solving.
Love ipads for all the virtual manipulatives and the ability to show strategies and record thinking. Then Seesaw to share parents
A6: I totally jumped the gun! Love this number routine book- The Count Around the Class activity is eye opening.
Q6: Math Running Records by informs math fact strategy instruction. It's been changing everything! So powerful!
A6: Great ideas for understanding mathematical practices in Putting the Practices into Action
Just starting to use - loving it
This is in my TBR pile, thanks for the reminder.
Love the Number Talks book
A6: My other favorite is Intentional Talk by and
Q5: https://t.co/21nQM5gs1Q word problem generator with its modeling has been so powerful! His games are awesome too!
YES, a must have along with About Teaching Mathematics by
YES! I have some of her individual books too. Understanding Place Value is great.
Tomorrow I will be reading Even Steven and Odd Todd to teach even and odd numbers
A7: I won't give up the Global Math Twitter Task Challenge while it is going on! It is so engaging for the class.
If you can go to a Greg Tang workshop so worth it!
A7: Number Talks by . Hands down provides the most magical math moments!
A7: Sharing the thinking students use to solve problems, it puts me on the edge of my seat to follow their journey.
I am doing a slow math twitter chat for 2nd grade Hoping to have classes join us. Class twitter is

He went to my elementary school!
I've heard about this but haven't explored it yet, thanks for the endorsement
I did a doubling lesson, Ss recorded the sums when they doubled each #.They're wondering why we never get odd numbers.
Q7: sharing strategies after problem solving word problems..We name the strategies and refer to them as "Connors" strategy.
So powerful using your student's names!
He went to my elementary school!
It is FABULOUS! Just search the hashtags , ,
Love the book Two of Everything for teaching doubles
A7: Also, anchoring a lesson with children's literature!
A8: Noise level for the kids that are not in my small group!
A8: Reducing the mini - in mini lesson.
Ah, yes. That's a big one especially at the beginning of the year. Lots of positive reinforcement
Any favorite math apps or websites for grade 2? We use IXL
A8: I find that I forget to go back and go over math journal questions they do on their own. That is the most powerful part!
has some classic books and resources for math literature with worthy lessons.
Reflex for math facts and i-ready for everything = both cost $ but our district pays
I love . It has also has as subscription but it is conceptual & rich in number sense.
A9: YES! I would love more math chats. How about number talks & then routines beyond number talks?
Yes, please. What to with the other kids during guided math - those not in small group w/T.
ironing that one out this year as I return to guided math.
Our team made a Google form to sort Ss by strategies they use to solve different word problem types. Great visual
A9: I would love to share or talk about Counting Collections. I LOVE these. Have any of you tried them?
No, I would love to know more
