Howdy everyone! Welcome to #TXed chat. Tonight we talk about GRIT. What is it and how can we develop it?
Please take the next few minutes to introduce yourself and tell us where you are from.
Grit is your willingness and/or desire to not give up/ give in, and knowing you can overcome and surpass anything that gets in your way. #txed#WestAveEs
Ok, I had to pull the Ag Commissioner 30 Day reports multiple times. I was sure I was missing something. But nope, the data is accurate. @MillerForTexas had 13 total contributions this reporting period. @KimOlson4TxAg had 964.
#txlege#txed
#txed A1 Grit is 1. Thinking like a 100 yard dash to the body 2. Complex problem solving 3. Thinking about thinking 4. the process of figuring out the WHY of things AND... 5. Thinking with #MorePower
A1 Until sitting in a session with @SuzanneMaxwell7 at Brenham U...I really did not know! Grit is having PASSION and a true why w do the things we do! #TXed
A1. Doing anything and everything to get down to business and help our kids succeed. No complaining, no excuses, just doing what we do best. #txed#neisdpln
A2:
If students learn at a young age it is ok to give up and never try...they are in serious trouble later as adults. It’s only hard until you get it! #txed
A2: As with any important lesson, it is possible that if we don’t teach it, no one will. We can’t assume every student comes with the same inner messages ingrained. #txed
Because if they don’t, they’ll be joining the ranks of the students who the system didn’t work for. Education has changed so much and having the willingness to demand more from yourself is necessary in order to reach your fullest potential. #TXed#WestAveEs
A2. Grit can be tied to work ethic. We don’t always get it perfect the first try. We have to work at it and find new ways until we succeed. It’s what we do every day, and it’s a life skill our students will carry with them forever. #txed#neisdpln
A2 Some Ss already know about grit. Some Ss use up most of their grit just to keep coming to school, one of the most stable/safe places in their lives. #txed

A2: grit is essential in making in through rough times and getting through it. There's no glory without struggle. Gotta do the work! #TXed#WhistleWhileWeWork
Wow! Very insightful article. I strongly suggest taking time to read this and view education from the perspective of actual educators. Enlightening to say the least.
I LOVE this job, and am here to help all of you.

We sent 15 teams of journalists to spend a day with teachers. What we found: they feel misunderstood, unheard and disrespected. And their concerns go far beyond salary. https://t.co/2XC1lyfDS2
A2-They need to know that some of the world’s greatest leaders were not the smartest in the room, but the one who had the grit to make things happen. #txed
A2-To know that it exists is knowledge of what to strive for. Also, they need to know that sometimes it’s not easy. Keep trying. Sometimes we all fail. Keep trying. That’s when the real growth and learning occurs. #txed
A2 Some Ss already know about grit. Some Ss use up most of their grit just to keep coming to school, one of the most stable/safe places in their lives. #txed
A2 Just read a magazine article on Raising a Problem Solver. Going to send it out to my classroom parents as a parent, not their child’s teacher. Big idea- lose the perfectionist parenting and don’t let them quit. GRIT. #txed
A3:celebrate effort.Celebrate when students learn from a mistake. If we create an environment where students feel like they need to be perfect, they’ll never build up the confidence to go for it.We’re stripping them of the opportunity to develop grit, an essential life skill.#txed
A3 I do this by encouraging them constantly. “I see your wheels turning. I know you’ll get there. It’s just not where it needs to be YET. Keep at it! I’ll check on you in a few minutes.” They usually beat me to it. #txed
If you don't know about RootEd, you should! They're a grassroots, public education advocacy group founded right here in north San Antonio. I was happy to sit down and answer their thoughtful questions on public education and school finance.

We’ve received another candidate video! This time from @claire4texas, a candidate running for State Rep in House District 122. Check out our website to see a list of all candidates we’ve requested videos from! #RootEd#txlegehttps://t.co/cgKsM7Mu3a
A3: acknowledge it, talk about it, and model it. Today's rough moments are not cat in cement. Tomorrow is a new day with sunshine on the horizon. #TXed
#txed A3 BY BELIEVING IN THEM! #AlwaysBelieve in Yoursef = Rule #1 #ItWorks This has been my 1st rule since 1990. It has changed lives. One day schools will use #AlwaysBelieve in Yourself as their school theme!
A3: acknowledge it, talk about it, and model it. Today's rough moments are not cat in cement. Tomorrow is a new day with sunshine on the horizon. #TXed
A3: #1 - MODEL it. In every situation, with every person, even the ones that drive you nuts. If they see us lose our cool, get down, complain, etc. then that becomes an acceptable way to live and operate. #txed
A3 Relationship...relationship...relationship!!! I have a student that is at a low...got him coming in...going to get breakfast from McDonald’s...making a reach to get him to see brighter results! #TXed
A4: reward trying and effort above “getting it right”. While our ultimate goal is for kids to show their understanding by getting things correct, it’s more important to develop an environment where kids are excited to take risks, and celebrated for doing so. #txed#neisdpln
A4 Relationships and the climate in the classroom. This is ALL on the teacher. For them to take risks, they have to feel safe. They like to see you take a risk and mess up, too. Then it’s cool to be the mess up. #txed
#txed A3 I will soon be a published author. My 1st book "The Story of Always Believe" will be coiming out in November! This Saturday I will present at a Fort Bend P-16 Math Summit on this book.
A4: Again I would say model it - if we say “take risks” but we never do, what message do we send? I would also say be prepared to support failure which inevitably happens when you take risks. #txed
A5 We’ve been doingnit since the beginning of the year. Setting goals. Data tracking. Reading Growth Mindset books. Reflecting on how they apply to us. Using the word YET all the time. It’s catching on guys! They reminded me today that their 🧠s are stretchable! #txed
A5: As an admin team, we are goal setting alongside the teacher with every 4th grader in our school. Building relationships while talking about setting goals to be better than we were before. I’m LOVING this time. #txed
I would add, showing them something different than what they may be stuck in. There’s a whole world outside of what they currently know. Expose them to more. Sometimes, that’s all it take to want more. If you want more, often times you are willing to do more. #txed
A5-We got to show them how far they have come since the start of the year. Talk about those challenging days but let them see what happens when they don’t give up. #TXed
#txed A5 A5 Since 1990 my 1st rule "Always Believe in Yourself" has enabled Ss to achieve a growth mindset. You can't make the kids believe, but you CAN inspire them! Read my book! #ItWorks
Practice it. Practice losing and dealing with it in a safe environment. If they can learn that losing isn’t the end of the world, but rather another form of teaching, they won’t get stuck when they hit a road block. #txed
Great op-ed by @Beckerkcb.

Q6: Your turn! Take this time to share with everyone your challenge with helping students develop grit? Let's use all the experts here to come up with some solutions. #TXed
A6-Challenge is trying to keep them going forward after they doing something great. Feel at times that it is one step forward and two steps back. #TXed
#txed A6 This is the flow chart used in my book to show how I inspire my Ss to #AlwaysBelieve You achieve this through the relationships you build and by role modeling in your words and actions the Fruits of the Spirit. #BlessedCareer
A6 Challenge is trying to get them to use their grit instead of their ability to entertain other Ss. Some Ss feel it is easier to make others laugh than make an attempt to persevere! #txed
A6: I keep reinforcing that the past is gone, and the child can have a brighter future. The past may be like a ghost lurking in the closet, & we don't have to live in or stand by that closet all day. #TXed
I know relationships are key, but I only see some of my Ss twice a week for an hour. My time with them is limited. I need to make every minute count! #txed
A6 The challenges for me are the kids who rarely fail. Then when they do, it is the end of the world. And 😬sometimes their parents take it harder than they do😬. Knowing that they will face so many more ‘fails’ in life and being gentle with the newness of failure is hard.#txed
My challenge is overcoming the challenges Ss faced at home, in the time that I have them, often times with limited support from home. It truly does take a village, and sometimes the village is only at school. But this is when we practice grit and don’t give up. #txed

A6 I teach jr high...Challenge in itself! Trying to kids just to want to do their work on a daily basis is a challenge...if I could only create video games for everything!#TXed
Stay positive. Reinforce the YET. And don’t squash the confidence. Make them believe they’ll do better the next time and that their progress is more important than anything else. #TXed
