Thank you for visiting #ksedchat. We welcome all educators to our chat that runs Mondays at 8 p.m. Central. Though many of our educators have their homes in Kansas, all teachers are welcome to pop in and join in on the learning.
Amy DeLaRosa - Principal at Eudora Elementary. Excited to finally make it to the chat tonight. You can finding me belting out anything by Michael Jackson! #ksedchat
Katherine Ternes here! A third grade student teacher at Minneha Elementary in Wichita, KS. Gosh, just one song....I would have to go with anything Disney, but it depends on my mood. #ksedchat
Taylor Stucky. Business teacher at McPherson High School. I like to sing anything that is 2000ās pop like Backstreet Boys and Brittany Spears š¤ #ksedchat
Suzanne, teacher educator, K-State. I tap and sing every time I heard "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" The Charlie Daniels Band #ksedchathttps://t.co/PCLSARfxYz
A1) Encouragement is key in that it shows students that you are going to support them regardless of results. Its important we give them that initially but even more important that we give them that support when they are struggling. #ksedchat
A1: Encouragement goes a long way in building students' resilience and ability to believe in themselves. But students know when you aren't being authentic! Giving them positive feedback when they are working hard and making progress is key. Growth mindset is a continuum #ksedchat
A1: Building a relationship and making sure to build a classroom environment with the importance of growth mindset. Making sure the student is in a mindset that they can be successful and helping them get the tools that will allow them to be successful. #ksedchat
A1: Confidence is contagious! The more you believe in your kiddos, the more they believe they can achieve! Letās shoot for the moon! š #KstotheMoon#ksedchat
A1: encouragement is EVERYTHING! Our Ss deserve to know they can do anything, but they have to believe they can & then attempt to fail to get to success! #ksedchat
A1 It takes some of the pressure off students. They're more likely to believe someone in authority because you might have a better idea of what they're capable of than they do #ksedchat
A1: Encouragement is key to building self-confidence. That being said, encouragement needs to be genuine, so building a trusting relationship with your Ss is so very important! #ksedchat
A1: I think that the first part is helping students identify what they can do and see how they can move from that to something new. Strengths, rather than deficits. It is hard for students of all ages to compliment, rather than criticize themselves. #ksedchat
A1 encouragement is huge, kids look up to us, for many we may be the only cheerleader that they have. Probably more so with the younger and middles bit high school kids need it too #ksedchat

A1: Iām Kristin, a school counselor in Clay Center. Encouragement is so important. I hope the kids can have a list of āgo toā people when they need it. #ksedchat

A1: I mentor teens through my church and I tend to agree with this. Teens want the truth bybtbat age so they can feel more adult and deal. They donāt like lies. #ksedchat
A1: favorite quote from Anne Frank-āEveryone has inside them a piece of good news. The good news is you don't know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is." As educators we empower #ksedchat
A1 It takes some of the pressure off students. They're more likely to believe someone in authority because you might have a better idea of what they're capable of than they do #ksedchat
A1) Just ask Steve Covey. The power of positive thinking is well researched. Setting goals and being confident youāll achieve them makes them more likely to be reached. Encouragement keeps us on the right path of positive thinking so we donāt stray too far. #ksedchat
A2) kagan structures and.cooperative learning are so important for this. My struggling learners get the most from our STEM and genius hour projects. #ksedchat
A2: I feel that I'm blessed to be in PreK! Everything I do with them is about exposure, so I'm working with a blank canvas. It brings me such joy to see those a-ha moments in my students! #ksedchat
a2 use good differentiation to build student confidence. Provide good feedback and opportunities for struggling students to succeed and grow. #ksedchat
A2: I am a big believer in cooperative learning and partners that can help model and scaffold. Ss sometimes need to hear in their own words to help them gain knowledge. I feel this helps struggling Ss. #ksedchat
A2: How many lurkers are reading our chat, but not posting? Learning looks different for everyone - sometimes students need to see and hear examples, consider models, before they can envision themselves taking the leap (risk) in new experiences. #ksedchat
A2: I have an analogy I use to show growth mindset with my Ss. I share videos of baby Lesotho walk to show kids CAN learn and it IS hard and they WILL fall, but they will eventually... after many, many falls, will get it; they just have to keep trying, with babysteps #ksedchat
A2: I give many group problem-solving tasks. Whether they solve the problem or not, I like to point out the skills that moved them closer to success. #ksedchat
Giving students various and multiple examples of the task that the students need to complete. I plan a great deal for my students to work in partners, this allows for students to soar to the success that they can reach. #ksedchat
A2: I do a lot of group work. I try and give Ss time to think independently, but then share in small groups before having a larger class discussion. Then they have time to think independently again and see how much farther they get. #ksedchat
Yes! I love Center time for this reason. Ss can show other Ss their skills and strategies. They learn more from each other than from me this way. #ksedchat
A2) A lot of people can learn by sitting back and soaking up what everyone else is saying. Engaged takes many different forms. When in grad school I was the only masters student in a course with 7 doc students. I learned so much just by listening and asking questions! #ksedchat
A2: Be dangerously Curious when relating to everyone! Using genuine energy, curiosity & joy = relationships that live to grow in all areas & strugglers LOVE the culture of curiosity! #ksedchat
A2: How many lurkers are reading our chat, but not posting? Learning looks different for everyone - sometimes students need to see and hear examples, consider models, before they can envision themselves taking the leap (risk) in new experiences. #ksedchat
A2) Small groups and low floor/high ceiling tasks are probably key here. Having any avenue into the concepts gives them the foothold they need, and the coupled with opportunities for reflection and feedback strengthen the understanding. #ksedchat
A2: Collaboration and teamwork help students find success in my classroom. Peer models and partnerships are so important for all students to find success! #ksedchat
A2: I struggled in math and to this day the teacher that made a difference gave me the answers and I had to show how to get there! flipping your thinking š¤ changes your mindset #ksedchat
A2 Provide students a safe learning environment where struggle is safe and not having all the answers is okay. Learn together!! Just like this question.:-)
A3: I think we have math nights, reading nights, we need to teach growth mindset. Another thing parents might not be aware of. I have the convo at conferences #ksedchat
A3: Parent education on #growthmindset Ts could include tidbits in weekly newsletters. I also think if you empower kids with a strong growth mindset they may carry some of that over at home. #ksedchat
A3) math is the challenging one. We have a parent info. Night where we teach parents the new strategies and a game night for them to come play. Showing our learning in seesaw connects home to classroom too. #ksedchat
A3:This is a hard one, because some parents pass it over and donāt try to help. I may suggest simple exercises at home or even invite parents in to help explain our content to them; post videos or share links: anything to get them hooked and involved. #ksedchat
A3: "Here are some tools to help." "I am here to help." "What can I do that would help?" Funny you chose math. I had a horrible h.s. math teacher, but @reneesmith1 helped me overcome that! #ksedchat
A3: I went to KSDE math conference @ksdemath said āBeing good st math isnāt hereditary.ā True that! Itās all about how we communicate. So letās get them PUMPED and engage them! Not just say well, itās something you must learn. #ksedchat
A3: āCool, we can help with that!ā Truly itās about always building people up in ways that can be both real & push them to the next level, families too. Ss that believe make that much easier! #ksedchat
A3
Ts need to find ways for kids to be successful. I'm going to bring up differentiating again. Grouping ss by ability level is good too. We don't practice the freshman with the varsity. Doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the freshman. #ksedchat
A3) Explicitly teaching growth vs. fixed mindset can help the student directly, but working with families to make sure they aren't accidentally hamstringing the student's efforts with negative talk is really important. #ksedchat
A3: I often wonder why very few would say, āGee, I just am no good at reading, Iām illiterate.ā Seems one is am embarrassment and one is a badge of honor. We have to change our mindset! #ksedchat
A3) All our domains overlap. Opportunities in the classroom should be built around experiences that capture reality, and reality IS the interconnection of all disciplines. Whatever their passion, every class feeds it. Let them explore their passion! The rest follows. #ksedchat
A3: Educating parents on growth mindset is crucial! I try to tell parents that in life you will always struggle, itās better to learn to problem solve in school where you have a safe environment, than out of it when you are on your own. #ksedchat
A3: Goes full circle to encouragement! Sharing with parents tips on how to express positively, modeling for them by discussing Ss strengths and how to help with areas they are not comfortable with #ksedchat
A3 We have the opposite issue... most Ps are 100% behind us and support us, but the Ss couldn't care less. It's a constant trial and error of what can we do to help each other help their Ss succeed. #ksedchat
A3) Itās the old āgive a man a fish/teach a man to fishā deal. This is the 21st century, and teachers need to be honest about what our role is. We are no longer gatekeepers of info. Good and bad info abounds. Our role is teach kids how to think, not what to think. #ksedchat
A4: Building on prior knowledge is essential to higher levels of understanding! If students don't have the concepts needed to proceed they will be unsuccessful. Slow and steady wins the race! #ksedchat
A3 Encourage Ss that what they learn at school can be brought home and taught to family. Share w Ss that they can still develop different skills & still be a part of their family #ksedchat
A4) We have to crawl before we can walk. Scaffolding is important because students need to experience some success along the way to becoming self-actualized. Making sure that students experience some success gives them a desire to continue down the path. #ksedchat
Our Ps are supportive, but we hear, āWriting was my worst subject, so of course it is Ss. We just arenāt goood at that.ā It is like ability is inherited, fixed. Sad! #ksedchat
A3 We have the opposite issue... most Ps are 100% behind us and support us, but the Ss couldn't care less. It's a constant trial and error of what can we do to help each other help their Ss succeed. #ksedchat
A3: Might this also apply to teachers? How many of us have said, "I'm no good at......." We need to model the growth mindset and uncover our own fixed mindsets (Mine's about spelling and handwriting) #ksedchat
A4: Success breeds success, winning creates more winning in every school I know. Scaffolding builds this from ground up & creates some of that curiosity I sookenof earlier- a fearless enviro to ask, answer, learn & love! #ksedchat
A4: kids are no different than grown ups-they want to feel successful, if we can show them how to do little pieces then the big parts arenāt so difficult! #ksedchat
A4) as with anything scaffolding is important. They have to do it with him before they can fly alone. And asking questions along the way to push them to the next level is huge! #ksedchat
A3) contād. So weāre going to need to scaffold because we need to be giving every kid an opportunity to ask, āWhat do I need to do next to reach my goal?ā Our scaffold is our answer, and we want Ss to see that every kid has a NEXT step, even if they differ by kid. #ksedchat
A4: Success breeds success, winning creates more winning in every school I know. Scaffolding builds this from ground up & creates some of that curiosity I sookenof earlier- a fearless enviro to ask, answer, learn & love! #ksedchat
A4: Success breeds success, winning creates more winning in every school I know. Scaffolding builds this from ground up & creates some of that curiosity I spoke of earlier- a FEARLESS enviro to ask, answer, learn & love! #ksedchat
A5: An emphasis on self-efficacy can help students worry less about how they perform compared to their peers and more focused on achieving personal milestones. #ksedchat
A5: Stress that it's a game! When we play musical chairs, the 1st one out is the bus driver and gets to choose where the bus is going-two games at once! One group talking about what they're seeing on their trip, the other playing musical chairs. Win-win! #ksedchat
A5. Thatās tough bc some Ss thrive so well through competition. However, itās impt to celebrate individual accomplishments based on each Sās ability, hisyory, or personal goals. #ksedchat
A5: I use peer editing in small groups to help with historical argumentation. My students are all working towards the same goal, so they all use one another to improve. Sorry I was late! #ksedchat
A5: Project Based Learning lets students individualize their assignments so that success is not a right or wrong answer. I love showing students how two complete different ideas can be a success! #ksedchat
A5: Cooperative learning comes to mind after hearing all of you tonight. So many of my Ss seem defeated when they donāt āget itā as quicklyas others. #ksedchat
A5) Iāve started by de-valuing the grade, and placing extreme emphasis on achievement of mastery. Then itās all about what each kid can do for themselves. No comparing grades. (Who here honestly thinks they can measure a student to 4 sig figs.? Absurd.) #ksedchat
A5: I try to make this about THE students. How much better can you do, than the previous day? Try to one up yourself for just one day. And remember, working on a project is like a demolition derby, the last one usually wins. š#ksedchat
A5: Never de- emphasize it, just switch the competition focus. Every day is about being better today than you were yesterday at being YOU! Never miss the chance to be better but always be focused on your life not theirs- thatās the competitive edge I wish for Ss! #ksedchat
A5: Using cooperative learning doesnāt automatically take away individual work. When you assign roles students can evaluate how well they did; create ways for competition to be internalized #ksedchat
This is true I think Minute To Win It Math Games or Timed tears work well for those competiting students. So they all need to learn to work in certain parameters of learning in different projects. #ksedchat
Right. I canāt stop Ss from sharing their grades but when we talk about graded assignments I focus on my comments, and I share examples of great student answers w/o mentioning names. #ksedchat
Can you join me for 10 minutes tomorrow? I'm going to share some of my favorite ideas & some of my students' best creations! ā¤µļø #seesawchat#ksedchat
