Welcome to #APTeach chat. This chat is open to all of those inside and out of the @APforStudents community. Tonight we are discussing Assessment and Review.
I am Josh Bloss, I am a student at the University of Wyoming studying secondary education/math and I am here to try and learn from professionals already in the field of education
#apteach
A1: It may seem crazy, but we use 50% review questions and 50% questions from the current unit. Content from September matters as much as May. Students cannot forget it. It forces students to review the same questions over and over! #APTeach
Wow, I'm still trying to figure that one out after multiple redesigns. Fact based ones no longer apply in my content but the skill they need to answer text based take time #APTeach
A1: We would love to figure out how to incorporate doing more lab practical parts to our labs. Our chem Ts @WattersEdu@EtnyreSci do this already. #apteach
A1: For APUSH it's about timing. 55 SBMC in 55 minutes is intense, so ensuring they can analyze the passages and have time to select answer is key! #APTeach
I don’t quite do it like that...as I cover more material, I add questions from previous content and move closer and closer the the weight of the actual AP exam. #APTeach
Review is very important. For mathematics i think it all builds upon its self and with out that review students aren't able to comprehend the new material #APTeach
A1: having review tested all year is crucial. If those assessments are created first, imagine the review you would build in your lessons t/o the year! #APTeach
A2: I allow test retakes on any graded assessment. I know our current AP T doesn't in his AP class but does in his honors class. Would be interested if any AP Ts allow retakes. #APTeach
A2: I was AP courses in high school and one of my teachers allowed us to do test corrections for half points back only if you could find the answer in the book, explain why you got the wrong answer and what makes what you found in the book correct. #APTeach
A1: With APUSH, I begin with Time Period 1 and Period 2 as shorter tests, usually 20 questions in 20 minutes. Earlier in the year, I focus on teaching students test taking strategies and how to break down the stimuli and enhance those skills as the year goes on #APTeach
A2: Having 50% review questions should help mitigate failure on anything. However, reteaching happens globally if its widespread failure, and then individually if some students are still struggling. #APTeach
A2: for essay writing, we are in a constant cycle of write, assess, reflect, and write again. It is all about practice and feedback without grades attached.#APTeach
A2: Students earn the exam curve by coming in to correct the questions they missed, and they have to say why they missed it. A lot of times they had a gut response and went against it! Trying to correct that before May 11th :) #APTeach
A2: currently, using @Schoology for tests. i use the data from there and review q's with students. i often spend at least half a class period reviewing the assessment and use various tools such as quizziz, quizletlive, kahoot, and twitter to constantly review! #APTeach
Question 3: What types of activities or ideas are essential for preparing students for the national exam? Share some of your best review ideas. #APTeach
i do! i already have most of my honors course already built and have been in the process of building my apcogo class in it this semester. data analysis is AWESOME! #APTeach
Question 3: What types of activities or ideas are essential for preparing students for the national exam? Share some of your best review ideas. #APTeach
A3: Speed dating with vocab terms, review sessions on Saturdays and at the public library on the weekends, pizza parties for practice tests, countless practice essays, "catch phrase" reviewing terms, and online chats later at night for review #APTeach
A3: I think practice tests that are timed are huge. As a student I always think I will be fine on time and then when I get to the test I can have a little bit of a panic and waste important time. Being able to have a couple of practices under your belt is huge. #APTeach
A3: I have been working with this review site for students and I think it is awesome. Check out Fiveable- they host live review sessions for your kids! https://t.co/Obkgwy6TxW Amanda from @highlevhistory runs it. #APTeach
I'm the same way...quiz corrections for points back in every class but AP. I can argue reasons for why and why not.
I typically allow corrections on quizzes, but unit tests are final. I hope the quiz corrections help analyze errors before the test. #APTeach
A3: I plan on using Kahoot for my AP review. It’s great for going over vocabulary Students love the competition. I also want to review the broad themes throughout American History - the development of women’s rights, foreign policy, growth of the Federal Government. #APTeach
obviously, released tests; however we have also played quizlet live with classes across the country and have developed a card game in which my students built and compete to assemble in the form of a government flow chart. #APTeach

A3: Quizlet Live, Kahoot, review sessions after school and on super testing days, fly swatters for vocab terms (very loud). Trying to think of more for the last two days! #APTeach
Question 3: What types of activities or ideas are essential for preparing students for the national exam? Share some of your best review ideas. #APTeach
i've connected with a teacher in another state and we share the code and have out kids compete. it makes it A LOT more difficult BUT the students gain more out of it. going to use google hangout this time too, in order to see the other classes chaos! :) #APTeach
Getting as close to test timing is great.
In math sometimes I find the opposite. Students are so worried about time they rush through some easy points and then realize they had more time at the end. Even more so on the ACT the AP #APTeach
A3 I currently run YouTube Live reviews before each unit assessment using a shared Google Slide deck that allows Ss to ask Qs live. Seems to work well and is recored for other to watch which is a nice bonus. #APTeach
A3 a little late tonight #baseballseason. I like to have kids think about the content in a bunch of different ways to help them read the MC questions better. #APTeach
Question 3: What types of activities or ideas are essential for preparing students for the national exam? Share some of your best review ideas. #APTeach
A4: Straight from the shoulder, here it comes:
If a student can earn a 4 or 5 on the national exam, chances are they've acquired all the writing, thinking, analyzing, researching, arguing, sourcing, contextualizing, and reading skills they need for college. #StriveFor5#APTeach
Great question...I spend a lot of time focusing on proper study skills that produce results and can be used in the college setting. Luckily, in AP Psych we cover memory, cognition, and learning. #APTeach
A4: Studying for an AP exam teaches you in itself how to become ready for college. I think students who do really well on AP tests take time themselves to practice and learn, instead of a normal high school test where you just review in class. #APTeach
Make the learning process fun! Thesis showdown! Drafting your own Contextualization crawl (SW Style!). Kids don’t really know they are learning! #APTeach#late to the party
I do a lot of reflection and goal setting. So they analyze their results on exams and then brainstorm how to improve using brain-based research. #APTeach
A4: I use test bank questions and my mock exam was all AP style questions. We review test skills for MC/essays and we've looked at sample essays released by the College Board #APTeach
We also do a daily practice exam question and a brainstorm to practice test-taking skills and mix in higher order thinking. Sometimes brainstorms are analyzing cartoons, other times mini FRQs, others forming and supporting arguments.
My school didn't do all that much other than give us the day off on test day. I think as a teacher I will fight for my students to have at least part of the day before the test off to meet with other AP students and do final reviews in preparation for the test #APTeach
A5 perseverance! Students willing to struggle through AP style problems and focus on answer justifications have some great experience for college. #APTeach
Teachers can be compensated for up to 10 hrs of review time outside of the school day. Students get excused early for afternoon tests or an extra period off after morning tests.#APTeach
Whenever your ready, let me know! I can share my reflection and goal setting form with you! I’ve built it up and modified it over the years based on student feedback, data, and my own observations! #APTeach
Make sure they are fed, decorate the walk way with positive words, each student gets a candy with a note "you are mint to do well" I know 🧀 but they love it, therapy dogs first and last day of exam, goodie bags for breaks and ice cream when they're done#apteach
A5: I am hosting pizza review parties after school leading up to May 11th. Our school does a big pep rally for national tests like the SAT and ACT. I believe that should extend to the AP Exams as well #apteach
We show them the SW crawls as examples of contextualization. Then we give them fun prompts to respond to. We usually start off with them telling us what “caused” them to take APUSH. Then they create it “https://t.co/M3qkhI8BPV” #APTeach
i've connected with a teacher in another state and we share the code and have out kids compete. it makes it A LOT more difficult BUT the students gain more out of it. going to use google hangout this time too, in order to see the other classes chaos! :) #APTeach
A6: Encourage your students that no matter the outcome it will all be okay. They will get into college and still be successful in whatever they want to be. Go with your gut and don't second guess yourselves, you know the material. #APTeach
As we approach the exam, encourage the students to work smarter, not harder. Help them analyze where their strengths & weaknesses are so they can optimize their prep time. Whittle down the skills into the biggest bang for their buck! #APTeach
But MOST importantly, remind students that they are more than a number! Remind them that their success is measured in their ability to persevere and learn, on the road they’ve taken to get here. Remind yourself of the same thing! #APTeach
